Kate McDonnell has captivated audiences all over the world with her award-winning songwriting, her unusual upside down and backwards guitar style, and her crystalline voice.  Kate was in the Heartland for a couple of shows in 2024 including Howard Dolginoff's Labyrinth House Concert Series.  She was kind enough to come onto my radio show during a Pledge Drive to help me raise money for community radio.  Kate comes from generations of musicians on both sides: her maternal grandfather (trumpet) and great grandfather (trombone and viola) performed with the National and Baltimore Symphonies. Kate's father sang in operettas in his younger years, and her mother continues to play anything she can hear on the piano in F#, just as her own mother did. All three of Kate's siblings have the musical gift.  Armed with her unusual guitar style and soprano voice, Kate teamed with her twin sister to perform around their Baltimore hometown during their high school and college years. After a four-year sabbatical from performance in the mid-80s, Kate returned to music by partnering with guitarist Freddie Tane, at one time a member of Bill Haley's Comets.  That duo cut two self-released albums during their collaboration and opened shows for touring stars such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Judy Collins.  In 1989, Kate started writing her own songs and began racking up serious critical recognition like being named a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and a finalist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Showcase in New York State.  Kate's latest work, “Trapeze” introduced here on the Tasty Brew was released in September 2024.  Enjoy this conversation and in studio performance with New York's Kate McDonnell.

Both a powerhouse vocalist and an intrepid songwriter, Flamy blends the art of drag with her iconic folk/rock sound to create a memorable musical experience. Flamy is the first drag performer to appear on Christian music charts, with both her song “Good Day” and her Album Bible Belt Baby reaching #1 on iTunes — the latter staying at the top for nine consecutive days. Additionally, “Good Day” debuted at #20 on Billboard's Christian digital sales chart. Flamy has collaborated with Adeem the Artist, Jennifer Knapp, Semler, and Derek Webb. In addition to playing the New Folk winner's showcase at the 2023 Kerrville Folk Festival, she has played Wild Goose Festival in North Carolina, San Diego Pride's SheFest, and is headlining Blount County Pride in East Tennessee this September. It's no accident that Flamy's drag name is an homage to Amy Grant, the undisputed queen of Christian music and 90s chart-topping pop artist. Much of Flamy's music centers on the queer spiritual journey, telling stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma in a world where LGBTQ+ people are frequently ignored by, harmed in, or ejected from religious spaces. With a bold lip, a big lash, and a blistering voice, Flamy drags audiences to a soulful, uplifting church of her own making. "Deep in the woods, things aren't always what they seem..." Songs might usually have some sort of emotional impetus, some big feeling that catapults them into being--but not all songs start with a feeling. Not all songs are initially borne from that place deep down inside of us that says, "See me. Hear me. Know me."Some songs start, quite simply, with a prompt. In this episode, folk and Americana artist Baylist Laramore shares how his eerie, contemplative track, "Flashing Lights," came from the combined influences of a prompt from a writers' group and a book he couldn't put down. Baylis talks about coming to songwriting later in life, about the importance of finding a songwriting community, and how writing prompts and musical friendships have inspired him to keep writing, keep singing, and keep creating. Jeremy Facknitz has been entertaining audiences with his lovingly crafted music and high-energy performances for over a quarter century. Since the 2002 break-up of his Detroit-based band "The Ottomans" (they earned a 2001 Detroit Music Award for Best New Alternative Band, beating out "The White Stripes"), Jeremy has performed primarily as a solo act, marrying folk-rock and jazz stylings to showcase his intimate stories of life, love, and self-discovery. But from 2003 to 2017, those stories seemed to fall on deaf ears. Facknitz carved out a living performing at bars, coffeeshops, and corporate events while teaching lessons on the side. "I was happy to be making a living performing music, but my original music wasn't being heard - and as the years passed I found myself more and more frustrated playing to little more than the din of drunken conversation." Things came to a head on July 17th, 2017 when Jeremy was diagnosed with viral meningitis. "I came face to face with my mortality, and I realized it was time for a change. I quit performing at bars and spent the next year making the leap to house concerts, touring, and performing solely for listening audiences." The leap has paid off. Jeremy was named a top 24 finalist from over 800 entries in the 2020 and 2022 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competitions at Kerrville Folk Festival. His songs "Ballet of an Unhatched Chick" and "Michigan (Something In The Water)" were awarded semi-finalist distinction at songoftheyear.com, also in 2020 and 2022. While occasionally performing with his 6 piece band in Colorado, Jeremy continues to tour solo - performing at house concerts and listening rooms in the United States, Canada and Europe. His 6th solo album "Smilin' At The Future" is set for release March 31st, 2023. Serendipity brought Jeremy Facknitz into my musical life. Late this past summer, he posted on a local Kansas City Musicians Facebook Page looking for a fill in gig on just a few days' notice to help support a solo run of gigs in the Midwest. I checked him out, was happy to help him land a last-minute slot in a songwriters' circle at a local venue and welcomed Jeremy into the radio station for a conversation during my weekly Tasty Brew Music Radio Show. Jeremy has entertained audiences with his lovingly crafted music and high-energy performances for decades. Since the 2002 break-up of his Detroit-based band "The Ottomans", Jeremy has performed primarily as a solo act, marrying folk-rock and jazz stylings to showcase his intimate stories of life, love, and self-discovery. Facknitz carved out a living performing at bars, coffeeshops, and corporate events while teaching lessons on the side. Life turned on a dime when on July 17th, 2017 Jeremy was diagnosed with viral meningitis. "I came face to face with my mortality, and I realized it was time for a change. I quit performing at bars and spent the next year making the leap to house concerts, touring, and performing solely for listening audiences." Jeremy was named a top 24 finalist from over 800 entries in the 2020 and 2022 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competitions at Kerrville Folk Festival. His songs "Ballet of an Unhatched Chick" and "Michigan (Something In The Water)" were awarded semi-finalist distinction at songoftheyear.com, also in 2020 and 2022. As you'll hear in this conversation, while occasionally performing with his 6 piece band in Colorado, Jeremy continues to tour solo - performing at house concerts and listening rooms in the United States, Canada and Europe. He's currently promoting his 5th album of original material "From Those Sweet Ashes" and has begun recording a follow-up album set for release in 2023. Enjoy this brief interlude with Songwriter Jeremy Facknitz.

Developments in the Uvalde school massacre: Conflicting and still-unclear reporting seems to show that school security and responding law enforcement barricaded the shooter inside a fourth grade classroom for as long as 40 minutes, during which most of the killings took place. The shooter is believed to have bought his two AR platform guns just after his 18th birthday and just days prior to the shooting. Governor Greg Abbott offers no specific solutions, saying new gun restrictions are "not a real solution" and that the assault that killed 19 children and two adults "could have been worse". "Red Flag" laws are being mulled as a potential way to curb access to guns by criminals or people experiencing mental issues. In addition to crowdfunding and blood donations, legal services are needed by the families of the victims - attorneys are implored to volunteer. Meanwhile, protests are expected at Friday's NRA event in Houston. The Uvalde event is the deadliest school shooting in state history, and Texas is now an national outlier for mass shootings, with five of the ten deadliest - four in schools - having occurred within our borders. Austin ISD is responding with a buildup of security at its campuses. New details in the Anna Moriah Wilson murder case indicate that Austin Police had arrested the suspect, Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, days prior to a warrant for murder being issued. Armstrong was released, however, because her date of birth on record did not match the date of birth on the warrant. Armstrong remains at large and is now believed to have traveled to New York City. Yelp has revealed its Top 100 Places To Eat In Texas list, and 18 establishments in Austin and the surrounding area made the cut, including #1 Paper Route Bakery. From New Jersey, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania.  Jack Hardy's legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) was a powerful source of education and encouragement early in his career, and he won the New Folk Award in 1984 at Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival. In addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums, John released a collector's edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John's greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio. Many well known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Mary Black and Maura O'Connell. John has played all over the USA and Europe at hallowed venues like Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage.

My guest today is North Carolina based singer and songwriter, Chuck Brodsky. I first heard about Chuck through our mutual friend, Jeff Lionz. Jeff, who knows about my undying love for baseball, sent me a couple of Chuck's CD's (The Baseball Ballads and The Baseball Ballads 2) in the mail. I put them both in my car and listened on drives for the next two months. I was taken by the stories and the amount of thought and research that was put into each lyric. In addition, all his songs seemed to give life to unsung heroes of the game. Rather than singing about any ol' no-hitter, Chuck sings about the one Dock Ellis threw on LSD. He also has a song called, "Death Row All-Stars," which is a tragic tale about how a warden in Rawlins, WY used baseball to set execution dates. Though he's a member of the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and has 22 songs in the Baseball Hall of Fame Sound Recording Library, Chuck is far from being labeled a "baseball songwriter." He's written about the hollocaust, politics, and many other topics during his monumental career that spans over three decades. (now quoting form chuckbrodsky.com) Chuck and his songs have appeared in several films and on tv. His beloved Philadelphia Phillies featured an interview with him along with his song “Whitey & Harry” in the documentary “Richie Ashburn: A Baseball Life.” The 2003 Sony Pictures release “Radio” included a cameo by Chuck as well as his closing title track. “Moe Berg: The Song” appears in the PBS film “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story” (2010). His music has been featured on ABC's Good Morning America, NPR's All Things Considered, Dr. Demento, ESPN, PBS, and by NFL Films. Kathy Mattea's recording of Chuck's song “We Are Each Other's Angels” appears in the film “Dear Mr. Goodlife” (1998). The African Children's Choir Of Uganda also recorded the song on their "Love Is A Journey" CD. “Blow ‘em Away” has been recorded by David Wilcox and many others, and also appears on the Christine Lavin produced “Laugh Tracks.” Sports Illustrated placed "The Ballad Of Eddie Klepp" among the 25 Greatest Songs About Sports of All–Time. In April of 2019 Chuck was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall Of Fame for his Baseball songwriting. (end quote from chuckbrodsky.com) Special shoutout to Kerrville Folk Festival! It was 2013 when I first became fully immersed in the Texas Music scene while recording an early Mister Radio episode at the Picker Circle in Luckenbach, Texas, then I finally understood why many critics say that all the best singer songwriters come from Texas, in fact one reviewer for Americana magazine, when writing about my guest, stated that “some may argue against this fact but it's true; the dissenters are wrong. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson, the names go on, and now there's one more to add to the list...Kevin Higgins.” It is my honor to introduce today's guest, Kevin Higgins.

Nanci Griffith got an early start on her path to performing and songwriting. At the age of 6 she began to write songs, thinking of it as “part of the process of learning how to play guitar.” While she doesn’t remember many of her earliest songs, she does recall that “the first original song my mother commented on…was a song about Timothy Leary.” Then at the age of 14, when a campfire turn at the Kerrville Folk Festival caught the ear of singer-songwriter Tom Russell, she was on her way. Having recorded 18 albums and performed concerts all over the world, it’s safe to say that she’s never looked back. Griffith's career has spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, Folk, and what she terms "folkabilly." Griffith won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, Other Voices, Other Rooms. This album features Griffith covering the songs of artists who are her major influences. One of her better-known songs is "From a Distance" by Julie Gold, although Bette Midler's version achieved greater commercial success. Similarly, other artists have occasionally achieved greater success with Griffith's songs than Griffith herself. For example, Kathy Mattea had a country music top five hit with a 1986 cover of Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime," and Suzy Bogguss had one of her largest hits with Griffith's and Tom Russell's "Outbound Plane." First broadcast in 1994, Tent Show Radio is a one-hour public radio program created from the best live recordings from acclaimed musical acts who grace the Big Top Chautauqua stage each summer in beautiful Bayfield, WI.  During intermission, host Michael Perry spins a story “from the backstage dressing room, with the one lonely little light bulb burning."  Topics range from Mike’s battles with trees, to the behavior of rogue chickens, to the search for hope while stoking a wood stove in the darkness.  Running 52 weeks a year, Tent Show Radio is broadcast on 31 listener supported radio stations across 6 states and on most podcast streaming platforms. "Tent Show Radio" is also available for streaming at www.tentshowradio.org. Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua was founded in 1986. The first show under canvas was the Nelson-Ferris Concert Company Production Riding the Wind, the story of Bayfield and Madeline Island. Since then Big Top has welcomed over 700,000 patrons to the grounds for 2,000+ concerts and shows and countless lectures, workshops and other unique events. In addition to the action on the tent grounds, Big Top has also broadcast its performances over the public radio airwaves since 1994 through Tent Show Radio, bringing Big Top concerts into living rooms across the country and around the world via internet streaming and podcasts. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Izzy Heltai over Zoom video! With brutal honesty towards himself and forgiveness for those around him, Izzy Heltai’s music walks the elusive line between confessional and relatable.  On his debut album, “Father,” the 23-year-old singer/songwriter dives deep into his fascination with human relationships, and specifically the way that those relationships change and reorganize themselves over time.Originally from Brookline, Massachusetts, Heltai is the child of two mathematicians and first-generation European immigrants.  Heltai moved from Boston to the small town of North Adams, Massachusetts at the age of eighteen, and took up residence in his friend’s closet for one hundred dollars a month rent. Now, at twenty- three years old, Heltai sees his own coming of age reflected in the album, which includes songs written over the past four years.Throughout the record, Heltai braves the exploration of not only interpersonal and societal relationships but also his own relationship to himself.Father was recorded by Heltai’s longtime friend Andy Cass and produced by Sophie Buskin, whom Heltai met at the legendary Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas.  The production is raw and full, with subtle harmonies and guitar lines weaving their way unexpectedly through the mix almost as if they were grown in the song. There is no sign of musical overthought, allowing Heltai’s emotional vocals to shine organically. At a time when any conversation with a stranger can quickly become a sociopolitical battle, Heltai’s introspective and thought out songs are a breath of fresh air.  With an overwhelming empathy for humanity, and willingness to search for personal responsibility, Heltai’s “Father”, will not leave your heart or your ears unchanged. We want to hear from you! The founder of Nobody's Girl (with Rebecca Loebe and Betty Soo) and daughter of beloved songwriter Pierce Pettis, Grace Pettis was raised in a "homogeneous community steeped in a traditional Christian faith." This led to some questionable decisions as a a young person, including not reacting in a loving way when her best friend, Landon, came out to her as a gay man. Fortunately, that frame of mind and that action do not define her. Through contemplation, information gathering and soul-searching, Grace landed in a different place. She realized how she had done Landon wrong and also knew she could only express it through song, which is how her new song "Landon" came about. Grace relates to and prefers brave songwriters and the new song certainly is brave. An interesting note to make about Grace is that even though her dad is a successful musician, Garth Brooks, Joan Baez and many others have recorded his songs, her parents did not want their children to pursue music. That all changed after Grace attempted to teach herself on a self-purchased cheap guitar. Her mom, seeing her daughter struggle, finally let Grace play her fancy Martin guitar. Eventually, her dad let her use one of his guitars and things began falling into place. She moved to Austin and started playing open mics and attending Kerrville Folk Festival. She even won the New Folk Award at Kerrville in 2011 (something her dad ALSO won in 1987). Grace is very open and honest in our conversation. She addresses questions ranging from how she is actively being anti-racist to her Star Trek podcast ("Troubadours on Trek"). We love Grace! The San Francisco folkie who became a Nashville hitmaker with "Life's a Dance," "Don't Laugh at Me," "I Think About You," Grown Men Don't Cry" and more!  IN THIS EPISODE: PART ONE The guys discuss Paul's 2019 Grammy experience and Scott's recent revelation about the importance of Steve Seskin. PART TWO -   9:08 mark Steve Seskin sits down with Scott to talk about the lessons he learned busking on the streets of San Francisco and how they’ve informed his songwriting instincts; the way he learned to write songs he was proud of but didn’t want to sing; the way he managed to avoid burnout as a songwriter; how Morgan Freeman inspired one of his biggest hits; the reason his future was altered when his publishing company ran out of coffee cups; what every writer should do to prepare for a co-writing session; which of his songs made him feel creepy when he first started singing it, and song he wrote that changed the course of his life more than any other. ABOUT STEVE SESKIN One of the most successful Nashville songwriters who never actually moved to Nashville, Steve Seskin has written songs for a long list of artists that includes Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Peter Frampton, Waylon Jennings, Alabama, Ricky Skaggs, Peter Paul and Mary, and others. He has written seven #1 hits, including the Grammy-nominated “Grown Men Don’t Cry” by Tim McGraw; the John Michael Montgomery hits “Life’s a Dance,” “If You’ve Got Love,” and “No Man’s Land;” The Neal McCoy singles “No Doubt About It” and “For a Change;” as well as “I Think About You,” which earned Collin Raye an Academy of Country award for Video of the Year. Seskin’s song “Don’t Laugh at Me” was named the NSAI Song of the Year after it was recorded by Mark Wills. The anti-bullying anthem became a children’s book and was the impetus for the Operation Respect/Don’t Laugh at Me project, a curriculum designed to teach tolerance in schools. Through the program, Steve regularly performs in school assemblies and has launched related programs that help teach kids how to write songs of their own. Working from his home base in the San Francisco Bay area, Steve is additionally an active keynote speaker and songwriting instructor for the West Coast Songwriters Association, the Nashville Songwriters Association International, the Kerrville Folk Festival, and other organizations. Though best known for writing hit songs for others, he is also a successful performer and recording artist who has released more than 20 albums of his own material. Perhaps the best way to experience a Steve Seskin song is by hearing it performed by the man himself.

For many, July 4 is a day for brass bands and bombs symbolically bursting in air. For others, grown up in the shadows from Vietnam to Iraq, it’s hard to embrace a rah-rah patriotism. What’s a patriotism for religious liberals, which holds America to her dreams without looking away from her nightmares? When religious and political fundamentalisms try to hijack America’s symbols, from Old Glory to the Constitution, how do we recapture the flag? Steve Brooks, professional singer/songwriter and charter member of Austin’s Wildflower Unitarian Universalist Church, who has been described as a “poet, protester, songwriter, activist, political satirist, and humorist”, brings his special blend of music and storytelling to SMUUF. Korby Lenker, Megan Slankard, and Alex WongThese three amazing singer/songwriters stopped by CAU on their way to perform at "Space" in Evanston. That was over a year ago and the files were lost, but now found. Check out the Bio on these artists and you can see just how amazing they areKORBY LENKER: Korby Lenker is a sneaky-good songwriter. And singer. And multi-instrumentalist. An abbreviated list of Lenker's achievements so far includes: a significant amount of airplay on the legendary Seattle indie rock station KEXP; a BBC 2 interview with Bob Harris, which is only about the highest honor a rootsy singer-songwriter touring the U.K. can get; opening slots for acts ranging from Willie Nelson to Ray LaMontagne, Nickel Creek, Keith Urban, Susan Tedeschi and Tristan Prettyman; a successful run with one of the hottest young West Coast bluegrass bands of the aughts; and wins in the Merlefest folk songwriting contest as well as the Kerrville Folk Festival's elite New Folk songwriting competition. Lenker's composition "My Little Life" brought him the Kerrville honors this year. It doesn't seem possible that one song could work so well in such disparate worlds, but it also proved its powers as a galvanizing piece of indie-pop, drawing a small army of likeminded, rising Nashville artists and personalities--Jeremy Lister and Katie Herzig to name two--to make lip-syncing, ukulele-strumming cameos in Lenker's music video. MEGAN SLANKARD: "Nearly everyone who encounters this attractive and sophisticated singer-songwriter agrees that she has 'star' written all over her," says Acoustic Guitar Magazine about Megan Slankard. "She forges a distinctive sound with her smooth and courageous vocal dynamics, intelligent and diverse song styles, and sheer infectious enthusiasm." Slankard, who has sold just over 20,000 copies of her three CDs, self-produced her first CD at age eighteen and her third with help from Counting Crow's guitarist Dan Vickrey, and is currently working on a new project. Last year Slankard formed a new alt-rock band, and is already getting industry attention having been selected as a semi-finalist in Discmaker's 2007 Independent Music World Series and a finalist in the 2008 Musician's Atlas/Borders Books Independent Music Awards - even before the official release of her new band's first album, scheduled for mid-2008. Slankard and her music have appeared on TLC's "What Not To Wear", generating purchases by TV viewers after her first appearance that placed her second CD "Freaky Little Story" on the 5 spot on Amazon.com CD sales charts and on the Top-10 Rock Bestseller list on CDBaby.com. Because of the episode's popularity, the show's producers featured her in a follow-up episode, bringing her back onto the Top-10 with "Freaky Little Story". Upon its release months later, "A Little Extra Sun" also reached the Top-10 sales chart. Her songs have also earned over 175,000 plays on MySpace.com, and "Freaky Little Story" remains a Top-20 all time Rock Bestseller on CDBaby.com to this day. Slankard's music has also been featured on San Francisco AAA station KFOG's compilation CD and has been spun over 500 times on Modesto, CA. She has been featured in Rockgrl Magazine, Owl Magazine, The Synthesis, and online sources Fresh Tracks and Women In Rock, in addition to Acoustic Guitar magazine, whose editors named "Freaky Little Story" one of their top albums of 2005. She was a final selection artist for RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned Artists Volume 3 compilation CD; an A&R Online featured artist; a Song and Film Spotlight artist; and, an Acoustic Cafe featured artist on the "One to Watch" syndicated radio program (sponsored by the USA Songwriting Competition). Slankard also co-wrote and performed on the title track of Dire Straits founding member David Knopfler's new record, "Ship of Dreams". Megan has performed in over 200 cities in five different countries, including at showcases in Boston (NEMO) and Toronto (NXNE), on three tours as support for David Knopfler (Germany and England), and at the international festival InGuitar in Zurich (Switzerland). She will resume touring after the completion of the new CD. ALEX WONG: Alex Wong is a Brooklyn-based producer, writer and performer whose signature sonic style resonates in all he creates-from cinematic pop soundscapes to electronic tinged theater scores to his honest, direct songwriting. He has produced recordings with leading artists such as Delta Rae, Ari Hest, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Melissa Ferrick, Vienna Teng and Grammy nominee Ximena Sarinana. Alex has garnered critical acclaim for his songwriting collaborations with recording artists Amber Rubarth (The Paper Raincoat), Vienna Teng, Paul Freeman, Elizabeth and the Catapult and Alex Berger (Independent Music Award winner). His songwriting has been heard in film and television projects such as "The Last Song" (Disney/Touchstone), "One Tree Hill," and "The Lincoln Lawyer" (Lion's Gate). Songwriting is Whit's favorite thing—she'd rather do that than anything else.  She says its like fishing…some days you drop a line in and see if anything is biting…and if it's not, don't take it too seriously…just come back tomorrow.  She also talks about her process of putting things aside (sometimes for months or even years) and picking it back up later, and all of the sudden the missing piece is there. Baby boomers and their parents grew up under a shadow, not just of nuclear war, but also of that ideally functional family, the Cleavers. Genesis and other ancient stories paint a different picture of family: as a dysfunctional nest of vipers. Somewhere in-between are the ones in which we’re raised. We project their contradictions into our own identities, as well as our morality, politics and churches. How do we reconcile them in our spiritual lives, and against all odds, keep trying to create perfect families? Thoughts about family during this holiday season when family gatherings are common. Steve Brooks, professional singer/songwriter and charter member of Austin’s Wildflower Unitarian Universalist Church, who has been described as a “poet, protester, songwriter, activist, political satirist, and humorist”, will bring his special blend of music and storytelling to SMUUF on November 27. A favorite in Austin folk clubs, at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and in UU pulpits, Steve preaches that we can change the world when we look at it from a different perspective, or as he poetically puts it - “A single new star rearranges a whole constellation.”

Lowry Olafson is a multi-faceted human being. He is a songwriter, a performer, a husband, a lover, a father, a friend, an inspiration and a professional speaker who incorporates his music into his keynotes. During today’s podcast, he shares his music, his message, and his secrets.   His Songs and Their Stories Lowry uses songs to connect with others. All of his 9 albums have a different theme which represents the feelings he was having during those periods of his life. He says a songwriter uses a powerful melody to reach a deeper place in people. If Not You Then Who? - This very personal song was written with his friend John Cowell. John and Lowry started writing this song shortly before John died of cancer. Lowry performed this song at John’s Celebration of Life. It stands as a legacy to John’s life. The title came from Lowry’s wife’s high school teacher. Bread & Honey - From the album titled Days that Disappear Too Soon, Lowry wrote this song for his mother who died when he was 13. It was such a shock that he disconnected his heart and put her death out of his mind until he was 25, at a therapy session. He says his mother channeled this piano song to him and when he plays them for an audience it reconnects him to his emotions.  Borderland - This song came to Lowry in a dream while he was sleeping in a cheap motel room. Most of the song wrote itself and then as he was leaving town, he passed a sign that read “You are now leaving the borderlands” and it completed the song perfectly. One of his favorite lines is in this song, which is “My head's so full of dreams I could not hear my heart”. Three Quarter Time - This song was inspired by Lowry’s daughter. He was in a particularly morose mood when she innocently asked him to skip with her. He reluctantly joined in and the act of skipping transformed his mood instantly. Blanket in the Cold - This is Lowry’s favorite song that he has ever written. It is from his Back Again album. During a campfire song circle at Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, every time it came around and was Lowry’s turn to play another song he decided to play this one over and over.  His album Solid Ground was influenced by him becoming a father.   Is There Really Safety in Silence? Lowry shares one of his truths in this episode. He shares his truth because he knows other people may be going through the same thing. And, hearing someone else’s truth may help them to deal with unnecessary feelings of shame. Lowry first knew he was attracted to guys in high school but because of where he grew up, in Canada, he kept this information to himself and never told anybody. He wasn’t comfortable hiding the fact that he was clearly attracted to men and women and it made him feel like he was rejecting part of who he is. But a bisexual is not who Lowry is, Lowry is a warm-hearted, creative human being who just happens to be bisexual. To find out more about Lowry’s full body of work and an opportunity to join one of his workshops you can find him here at LowryOlafson.com
