Leave us a Review Artist Chris Dyer is a man who's persona, mission, and brand are intertwined in the pursuits of truth, self-awareness, freedom of expression and elevated consciousness. One could easily look at Chris's life now as a world famous artist and think that he's just one of the lucky ones. He has more success in a traditional sense of the word than most other creatives could dream of. And indeed he is. But that luck, like the rest of his life was largely by design. Chris Dyer grew up in Lima, Peru where his life was influenced by skateboard, and surfing culture as well as his obsessive love of art and music. As he moved through his life experienced, he overcame substance abuse, violence, and self-doubt and became totally self-reliant. Chris, as you'll learn in this episode is a self-made man. He's got a rare alchemy of right and left brain balance. He's an anomaly in a lot of ways which makes his story that much more unique. Dyer is both a free spirited, hippie dippy, free spirited, psychedelic taking, music festival going, wanderer as well as being an extremely analytical and hard working entrepreneur with both the intuition and experience to crush most everything he puts his mind to. Chris has earned a growing following of hundreds of thousands of people around the world. He's become recognized for his trippy, colorful, spiritually based and tribally influenced paintings and drawings. Dyer is also celebrated for his massive murals, street art, workshops and has a popular Podcast of his own. Chris's latest project, Galaktic Gang is a series of 5,555 NFT's which has totally been totally killing it on OpenSea. At the time of this podcast, his NFT collection has had a sales volume of over 751 Ethereum. For you non-crypto people, that's about $2 Million US Dollars by today's ETH price. If you're an artist, entrepreneur, seeking your own path of spiritual truth or just a curious fan, you'll love this episode. Jason Chambers has always been an artist, but until NFT's entered his life he was working long hours at factory jobs and only doing art as his side passion. Jason has explored various forms of art from illustration to portraiture, but his true passion has always been abstraction. In early 2019 Jason transitioned fully into abstract art. His unique blend of shapes and lines create a realistic world of chaos as well as a sophisticated visual language. His art is a way for him to sort through the craziness in this world. Jason's individual style is influenced by cubism, surrealism, and abstract expressionism. Over the past five months or so, his career has skyrocketed. Now, Jason's digital NFT artworks have soared in popularity on the NFT platform OpenSea beyond even his expectations. At the time of writing this, his sales volume has reached 202 Ethereum. Which, again at the time of writing this is equivalent to more than $858,817.

Daniel's Instagram following at the time of writing this is over 124,000 people and it's well deserved. Leave us a Review For most professional musicians, winning an Emmy Award and being Grammy-nominated would be the dream finish line of one's career. But for David Nichtern it's just another part of his journey.  David — rightfully so, seems to take pride in his ability to not be too attached to labels and ego based accolades, but by no means has that stopped him from achieving at levels most would envy. Without giving away too much of his story, let's assign some labels to him anyway. In no specific order, our guest today is an author, a senior Buddhist teacher, a CEO, a business consultant to clients such as Goldman Sachs. He's a published composer, a producer, a professional guitarist. To add a little context, let me mention that David's recorded and jammed with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jerry Garcia, and Paul Simon and written songs for the soap opera “One Life To Live” and his song “Midnight At The Oasis” became a mainstream classic. We got deep on this one. Really deep. We talked about some of my favorite topics including the importance of intention and awareness as spiritual beings, as well as creative process and life changing mile markers such as becoming a parent, making it as a  and pivoting careers. More About David He was one of the original students of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche – a renowned Tibetan Buddhist meditation master who combined a contemporary, secular approach to meditation with the ancient practices and philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism. At the apex of a diverse and prolific career, David has become the Founder and CEO of Dharma Moon – an online mindfulness-based education platform and global community. His team offers meditation training and meditation teacher training, life and career coaching, and creative and business incubation based on the principles from his most recent book and podcast, “Creativity, Spirituality & Making A Buck,” (published in 2019 by Wisdom Publications). Dharma Moon has been established to help people integrate and balance their creative expression with their spiritual practice and livelihood. David has been the Director of Karme Choling Meditation Center in Vermont, Director of Buddhist Studies and Practice at OM Yoga Center (NYC), and Director of the Dharmadhatu Meditation Center in Los Angeles. He has created and taught meditation teacher trainer programs for OM yoga, Empowered Yoga, Kaia Yoga, Metrowest Yoga, Samar asa Center (LA), True Nature Yoga (Tokyo), and Journey Meditation. He has also been a business consultant with companies creating a variety of offerings integrating meditation in a larger health and well-being context – including Goldman Sachs, Balanced Athlete, and Journey Meditation, among many others. David is also the writer of “Awakening From the Daydream: Re-imagining The Buddha's Wheel of Life”, (released by Wisdom Publications in October, 2016). He has several online meditation workshops available through CreativeLive.com. David records for and periodically tours with Grammy nominated kirtan performer Krishna Das. Leave Us A Review Burton LeBlanc is the head of the Makeup Department for the Emmy Award-winning show, The Handmaid's Tale. This show is single-handedly responsible for me having no fingernails left and Burton is the main guy that is responsible for the blood, gore, bruises, wounds, and perfectly groomed beards. Burton talks candidly not only about his current role (which is a dream position that took him decades to earn), but we dive much deeper into his outlook on creativity and inspiration. Particularly fascinating is how he is able to compartmentalize his very intense work with some truly gory scenes to keep his real life both mellow and spiritually balanced. While Handmaid's Tales fans won't be let down by this behind the scenes perspective, Burton also talks more broadly about what it feels like to finally feel like he's made it and how he stays grounded after being launched onto the red carpet with two Emmy Award nominations, a nomination for The Met Fashion Award and winning the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Award. This conversation is a deep dive into creativity, artistic inspiration, and what it looks (and feels like) to dedicate yourself to your art.  We flipped the switch today for this episode. Artist, father, aspiring author, and serial entrepreneur Jay Alders is interviewed by fellow artist Tom Shepherd. Jay Alders is a New Jersey shore based visual artist inspired by the beach, nature, ocean culture, romance, spirituality and surrealistic scenes from his mind's eye.  Alders' work has been seen around the world. From covers of magazines and on album art of music legends like Slightly Stoopid, Mishka and Echo Movement to TV appearances and on licensed products on shelves of your favorite stores. Tom is based in Warwickshire, England. The birthplace of Shakespeare. He himself is a full-time artist that focuses on wildlife paintings and landscapes in watercolor and oil. And he spends a lot of time teaching and now on lockdown with his wife and new baby. This interview was originally broadcast on Tom's own podcast, Creative Perspectives Podcast. But it was one of those magical conversations between artists worth sharing. So today, we bring it to you on Shifting Perceptions. The dialogue floated between many topics that a creative person of any medium can relate to. We spoke about the grind and hustle of making it as an artist. And how the landscape of business has changed and evolved since the early days of social media. We talked about the challenges of finding time (and opportunity) as an artist and how to tap into flow states when creating art.  I talk about my personal philosophies and strategies around being a full-time artist and how purpose, intention, and having a mission are at the center of my mindset. I really enjoyed having the roles reversed on this one. I hope you find this inspiring and entertaining as we both did.

His latest pursuit is abstraction and fatherhood.  I've known Erik for about a decade now. We've never actually met in person, but we've shared a camaraderie over the phone and internet. Erik's someone I consider a virtual colleague in a genre and industry that we both have common links to.  His original pieces have been featured in galleries across the country and abroad while his commercial work has attracted clients including Patagonia, Reef, REI and Billabong. Abel gives back to environmental and humanitarian projects through nonprofit partnerships, exhibitions, and commercial projects. This conversation is one I've wanted to have for a long time now. Ruby Roth - Artist, Author & Activist

Leave Us A Review Ruby Roth is an acclaimed activist, artist, former teacher, and author whose children's books have been featured in The Huffington Post, Change.org, and Glamour. A passionate advocate for creating a more sustainable world, Ruby has taken her vegan food philosophy to major media outlets such as The Today Show, FOX, ABC, and CNN — and as a plant-based family ourselves, we couldn't be more grateful for her work. Ruby has been vegan since 2003, and she first discovered children's interest in veganism while teaching art at an elementary school. This inspired her to write her book, “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” in 2009. “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” was the first non-fiction book of its kind and addresses issues such as factory farming and the effect that meat-eating has on the environment. Most importantly, “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” explains the emotional lives of animals and gives families an opportunity to sit down and open up a dialogue about sustainable living. Since the runaway success of “That's Why We Don't Eat Animals” Ruby has created five more beautifully illustrated children's books, including; Vegan Is Love, V Is for Vegan, The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids and the soon to be released, Bad Day. We love this collection of books, not only because it has helped countless parents educate and encourage their children to find a holistic approach to healthy living, but also because it stresses the power of good habits and their ability to change the world for the better.  We got to chat to Ruby about how growing up in a family of holocaust survivors influenced her childhood, what made her want to create such an illuminating series of children's books, and how she manages the inevitable artistic blocks that all creatives face.  The Lasting Effects of Familial Trauma Ruby grew up in a family of Jewish holocaust survivors, and she was candid with us about how this shaped her childhood. As someone who's grandparents were also holocaust survivors, I can relate to Ruby's experience. We shared with each other how our families history permeated our psyche as children, from being proud of our collective resilience to having a deep-seated fear of loss and suffering.  “There's a little bit of an undercurrent, and I wouldn't know otherwise, where it came from, that things could get taken away, or that something bad could happen. You know, there are studies now in, in the field of neuroscience that shows how fear is passed down through generations — even if the children didn't experience the cause of the fear.”  The Importance of Overcoming Resistance  Almost every artist at some point experiences a creative block, it's just part of the process, and can be difficult to navigate out of without conscious effort. Ruby explained to us that she views this resistance and lack of inspiration as something to overcome. One tool she uses to help her stay on track of her “resistance” is to create lists of tasks she needs to complete and to simply remind herself that she is only one person, and there is only so much she can achieve each day.  “There is constant resistance always, in me. And I think in every artist's and creative mind, that is always something that I am overcoming all the time, sometimes it's every day, sometimes multiple times a day. “ All You Can Do Is Try Does anyone truly have everything in life figured out? Whether you're a creative pinpointing your ideal medium and niche, or a parent helping your kids to navigate childhood, most of us are just trying our best. Ruby explained to us the importance of experimenting with your business model and putting yourself out there — even if you aren't sure what the end result might be.  “We are all trying, nobody knows. Even the even top-level people are still experimenting, and aren't sure what's going to work and what isn't. And I often tell myself, you haven't even begun to try. You know, when I'm feeling down or whatever, there are so many things to try and so many avenues to explore that we really cannot let ourselves go down any hole of like, ‘Oh, it's not working. It's not working.' — You haven't even tried, you know?” To hear the rest of our conversation with Ruby, click the player below and prepare to be inspired! Kara Goldin: Founder & CEO of Hint Water On Building & Scaling A Brand

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2019 78:18

Leave Us A Review Kara Goldin is a force to be reckoned with. An insanely successful entrepreneur, she is on a mission to improve the health of millions. We spoke to her about her early influences, what fuels her passion for healthy living, and how she stays motivated to inspire herself, and others.   Kara is the CEO and founder of the healthy lifestyle brand, Hint, Inc., based in San Francisco. Their products include fruit infused carbonated beverages that are free of artificial sweeteners and preservatives, naturally infused caffeine-based drinks, and a scented sunscreen spray that is oxybenzone and paraben-free. Throughout her career, Kara has won numerous awards for her contributions to society and her business acumen. Named as one of Fortune's Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs, as well as one of Forbes' 40 Women to Watch Over 40, Kara is a trailblazing innovator who proves that women can, and will, do it all. This awesomely insightful hour-long episode takes a deep dive into how Kara stumbled upon the benefits of healthy living,  the challenges of juggling family life in the world of business, and the importance of both personal and professional growth. Here are our favorite takeaways from wildly successful entrepreneur and all-around business guru Kara Goldin. Healthy Perception VS Healthy Reality When Kara decided to develop Hint water, she was inspired by her own journey of trying to be a committed H2O drinker. After gaining a wonderful new baby, and a not so wonderful new diet soda habit, Kara realized that her weight was creeping up and her energy levels were severely lacking. On a mission to kick the coke and up her water intake, she committed herself to drink more water. But, like most people, Kara found drinking water became a chore. So she did what any brilliant business innovator would — she solved the problem.  After realizing that adding fruit to her water made it much more palatable, she set about trying to find a product that was similar. Unfortunately, all that she could locate in her local grocery store were pseudo health drinks, with more sugar than most soft drinks contained. Armed with this information, and a desire to provide consumers with a healthy alternative, Kara set about developing a shelf-stable beverage that contained no sweeteners and no artificial preservatives. Cue the birth of Hint. Start From The Beginning A common theme throughout our discussion with Kara was that she's not afraid of diving into something new — because the fun is in the learning process. A self-confessed "scrappy" businesswoman, Kara explained to us the importance of jumping into a venture and educating yourself along the way.  When we asked Kara what significant lessons she had learned from being an entrepreneur, she told us that "Passion trumps experience," which really resonates with us as creatives. Almost every guest we chat to on this podcast has a passion for, and commitment, to what they do; it's not a coincidence; it's a correlation.  "I learned along the way that passion trumps experience any day. And curiosity is another one that's the key. If you can get somebody who just really loves what you're doing and emotionally excited about it, and curious, that's definitely something that is much more important." Don't Put All Of Your Eggs In One Basket. Kara shared with us the importance of diversification as an entrepreneur, and how she almost learned that lesson the hard way. After earning a lucrative deal to have her beverage stocked in Starbucks, Kara received a phone call 18 months into the contract letting her know that Starbucks had decided to go into a different, more profitable, direction. Rather than dwell on the temporary loss, Kara used the disappointment as fuel to help diversify Hint's business model. This quick thinking helped Hint to develop a new business relationship with Amazon's grocery delivery arm, and they quickly became one of Amazon's top-selling products.  "I always tell entrepreneurs to have a quick celebration about that victory, but then figure out how do you actually diversify, you know, so that you've got a lot more like victories and not just be trying to figure out how to make that one account, keep going." Kara is a genuinely passionate and dedicated advocate for safe and clean products. We love how much she stressed the importance of consumer education, and the responsibility of companies to be totally transparent about their products and what they contain. Even with the best will in the world, it can be challenging to decipher past snazzy marketing gimmicks and pseudo-health marketing, so we appreciate companies like Hint, Inc., who care about their consumer and are socially conscious — not just profit-driven. Speech: Arrested Development

Leave Us A Review Todd "Speech" Thomas made his name in the lates 1980s as one of the pioneers of a socially conscious hip-hop movement with his group Arrested Development that he founded in 1988 — an alternative sound to the gangster rap that was permeating the African American music scene at the time.  Their debut album "3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of..." went four-times Platinum in the U.S., and the title refers to the length of time it took Arrested Development to get a record contract. Hailed by critics as being a trailblazer of afro-centric positivity, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... won two Grammy awards and was included in a list of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. One of our favorite stories that Speech shared with us involves Spike Lee...yes, Spike Lee! Just a few months after the release of their debut album, he was tapped on the shoulder by the legendary film director and asked to compose a song for his upcoming biopic based on the life of Malcolm X. This chance encounter spawned the song Revolution", which was a focal point of the film's soundtrack when it was released in 1992. Never wavering in his social activism and message of unity over the past 30 years, in the 2018 documentary, "16 Bars," Speech helped to mentor and guide four musical artists in the prison system — winning best documentary at the Downtown L.A. Film Festival in the process. We talked to Speech about coming of age in Milwaukee and how his childhood molded his view of the world. From racism to gang crime and the suicide of a close friend, Speech has experienced many personal challenges, yet his positivity still endures. We are insanely stoked to present you with an episode that is as inspirational as the man himself. A fun (and serendipitous!), fact about Drew, is that his very first blogger clients were previous podcast guest, Alex Nerney, and Lauren McManus. Alex and Lauren run several insanely successful blogs  (including Create & Go and Avocadu) and earn six-figures — per month! If that's not a testament to Drew's work, we're not sure what is! We recently interviewed Alex and asked him about his meteoric rise to blogger royalty status. Leave Us A Review We had the honor of sitting down with 50-year surfing veteran & close friend Vince Troniec a couple of weeks ago...on his 69th birthday no less! We talked about surfing in the early days of Asbury Park, mindsets of surfing and what it was like being friends with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. This interview is special to us, as Vince is one of our closest family friends and a total local legend on the Jersey Shore.  We have found every late night or oceanside chat with Vince to be one of the best talks we have ever had and felt it was about time we share him.  Vince started competing in surf competitions at an early age, and by age 17, he was invited to participate in the World Trials in Puerto Rico. In 1968 the Vietnam war was being fought, and Vince had just lost his father. Going out on a limb, he relocated his mother and sister to Newport Beach, California, hoping that it would improve his mother's health issues. Thus ensued a wildly fun time spent in pre-Woodstock and hippy centric, 1960's California.  Vince paints a vivid picture for us of a time when surfing culture was in its infancy, and the likes of Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin were making musical history — and he even has the concert ticket stubs to prove it.  From watching Asbury park grow into the hipster enclave it is today, to being one of the first people to stock Quiksilver in his surf store, Vince has a colorful and storied past, but is also an extraordinarily down-to-earth and impressively humble human.  He shared with us his early venture of owning a lucrative surf shop and how he has been fortunate enough to make a career out of his favorite thing to do — ride the waves.  So sit back, get comfortable, and prepare to visualize the history of surfing in all of its glory, told through the eyes of the incredibly passionate and insanely talented surf legend, Vince Troniec. Sierra Blair-Coyle: Professional Climber, Bouldering Champion and Fitness Model

Leave Us A Review This week we sat down with professional climbing and bouldering champion Sierra Blair-Coyle, whose passion for the sport would inspire almost anyone to want to hit their local climbing wall. As a family who loves to climb together, when Sierra told us that she loved rock climbing from the moment she tried it, it completely resonated with us. The daughter of a gymnastics coach, Sierra tried gymnastics and karate herself, before she discovered climbing at the age of eight. Competing professionally ever since, Sierra achieved status as a professional climber at age 14.   Perhaps one of the most remarkable things about Sierra is her dedication to the sport, and her hunger to be the best that she can be. A World Cup Competitor since 2010, Sierra has also claimed the title of National Champion twice as a junior competitor. Feeling truly blessed to be able to do what she loves, travel the world and earn a living from it, we chatted about her aspirations as an athlete, her plans for the future and what she hopes to accomplish. Keep reading for some of our favorite insights from one of the most kick-ass women we've had the pleasure of talking to. When You Know... You Know Sometimes you experience something for the first time, and it feels like it's feeding your soul. Sierra explained to us that she found her passion when she first tried out climbing because she thrived off the challenge it presented. Completely undeterred by the physicality and self-discipline it requires, climbing gave Sierra with an opportunity to prove to herself that she is capable of achieving whatever she sets her mind to. "I tried other sports when I was younger, like gymnastics and karate, and what happened is that when it would get hard, or I had to work harder or put more effort in, I would quit — because I was a kid and wanted it to be easy. But there was something about climbing, when it got hard I wanted to keep doing it. I was pretty much all in from the beginning." Follow Your Passion — and Always Have a Plan B Determined from a young age to be a professional climber, Sierra did all that she could to make her dream a reality. However, her pragmatic attitude toward hard work and discipline isn't only applicable to climbing. In 2016 she graduated with a degree in marketing from Arizona State University and explained to us that although climbing is her love and career, it doesn't hurt to have a backup plan. "I always wanted to be a professional climber once I started, but honestly, even if I were in any other sport, I would want to be professional at that. I knew I wanted to do something great. As far as going to university, it was definitely a backup plan, because in climbing you're not making crazy money, I make a living, but nothing to retire on at this point, so it's just good to have that." If It Feels Good, Do It Sierra's can-do attitude is infectious, and as the parents of a totally fearless daughter, we love how much of an energetic and motivating role model she is — for women of all ages. "When I was a kid I was pretty much down for anything, I was definitely a tomboy, but then I also had more Barbies than I could even count, so I don't think my parents were super surprised when I started climbing. I was just having fun at it. I really enjoy doing something where I can push myself and achieve things, and I don't know what it was about it, but something about it just felt right to me." Marc Bell: Financier, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist & Broadway & Film Producer

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2019 72:45

Leave Us A Review This week we sat down with Marc Bell, whose innovative and fearless approach to life has led him to massive entrepreneurial successes. Founding his first company, Globix, at the age of 21, today, his firm has investments across more than 160 companies. We chatted to Marc about his early fascination with computers, how ADD impacted his schooling and why he started his working career as a janitor. So, how does a man who doesn't really have an interest in Broadway become one of Broadway's most successful producers and the winner of multipleTony Awards? Marc's warmth and self-deprecating humor emanate when he explains to us that through all of his successes, he has also encountered some stumbling blocks along the way. Ever humble and full of gratitude, Marc and his wife are actively involved in many philanthropic causes, and even welcomed over 70 foster children into their home, after they were displaced by Hurricane Irma. Over the course of 72 hours, Marc and his neighbors served 800 meals,  did 36 loads of laundry, arranged for over 80 much-needed baths and showers, as well as finding the time to celebrate four birthdays and a visit from the tooth fairy. This story of selfless giving is genuinely inspiring and describes just one aspect of the multifaceted and wonderfully kind man behind some of the most innovative companies in the world. Our Key Takeaways From Entrepreneur & Business Mogul Marc Bell If There Is a Better Way to do Something... Do it Marc's revealed to us that during his earliest ventures, it wasn't all smooth sailing. After losing over $100,000 worth of equipment due to an AC malfunction, Marc realized that rather than relying on another business to host his servers, he could build his own data center — with a better network. This early innovation and out-of-the-box thinking led Marc's newly formed company, PFM Communications, to land a contract with Microsoft — eventually driving over half of the Fortune 50 companies, operating at the time, to host with PFM Communications. "As a kid, I didn't really grasp the magnitude of what I was building, I was very focussed on what I was doing every day, and didn't focus on the significance of some of the stuff we created." Treat Everyone With Respect At one point, Marc's company employed more than 1000 people in New York City. He shared with us a funny and heartwarming story about the time he applied his own janitorial experience, to show a newly employed janitor in his office how to clean the toilets. Noticing the staff member struggling in the bathroom, Marc proceeded to get onto his hands and knees and demonstrate to correct way to clean a toilet to the employee — cue three senior executives of the company entering the bathroom and looking down at their boss entirely perplexed —  to which point he responded; "Guys, we're all the same. We're all made the same, we all put our pants on the same way, we all eat the same way, we're all the same. It doesn't matter where we come from, or what opportunities we had or didn't have in life — we're all the same." Work Ethic Is the Key Marc Bell's personality is as tenacious as his business acumen. We loved hearing him passionately discuss the importance of work ethic and being resilient when building your dreams. Although a lot of entrepreneurs preach the importance of taking time away from work when needed, Marc told us about his 120-hour week work habit, and why taking time off from work doesn't serve him. "Some people have hobbies. I don't have any hobbies. I work — that's my hobby, that's my passion, and I like what I do. So I can't complain." We are completely enamored with Marc's selfless outlook on life and passion for helping children and youths to reach their full potential. As Marc puts it, "These kids are our future. They will be doctors, lawyers, scientists, you name it. But they will only get there with our help." Suzanne Tucker: Generation Mindful's Founder on Conscious Parenting & Raising Emotionally Healthy Children

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2019 90:41

Leave Us A Review Suzanne Tucker is a powerhouse of positivity and nurturing energy. We had the joy of sitting down with her this week to discuss the wonders — and curveballs — that being a parent can bring. The founder of Generation Mindful and the "Time-In ToolKit," an engaging collection of illustrations and games, Suzanne Tucker is dedicating her life to teaching children (and their parents!) how to acknowledge and express their emotions and behaviors. A mom of four, physical therapist, and parent educator since 1992, Suzanne has been teaching gentle parenting and children's mindfulness classes for over two decades. In 2016, after being inspired to find a solution for one of the parents in her positive parenting classes, Suzanne founded Generation Mindful, a social-mission driven company creating children's educational tools, toys, and programs that connect the generations and build emotional intelligence playfully. Suzanne shares with us her optimism and belief that everyone can be a wonderful parent - and that it's totally okay (and actually pretty awesome) not to be perfect. Passionate about giving parents the tools and understanding to enable them to practice connecting with their children — rather than feeling helpless and overwhelmed — Suzanne is a wealth of knowledge regarding human emotions and motivations. Read on to hear some of our favorite takeaways from this super insightful chat. Perfection is Stifling One of the most refreshing revelations Suzanne shared with us is that it's okay not to be perfect. As parents, we want to do the best for our kids and can sometimes feel disheartened if we don't meet the impossible standards we set for ourselves. Suzanne explained that although a natural human emotion, chastising ourselves for not attaining 'perfection' is unrealistic — and that even chasing the bar of perfection can be detrimental. "As conscious parents, we're not looking for perfect, we're looking for present, and I like to think of the word mindfulness as present in the moment, with joy and ease." Emotions Are Okay (And Encouraged) Emotional intelligence is one of the greatest skills that you can help your child to master. Suzanne explained to us that encouraging your children to express their feelings, and their frustrations can have a calming and positive effect on your household. According to Suzanne, when families become aware of their feelings, and in the process take ownership of them, they empower themselves to become more connected with each other. "I think I was the keeper of my own prison because it was never overtly said that I can't express — that was modeled from my parents. We as human beings model, we model what we see. We have this beautiful thing called 'mirror neurons' where we literally mirror what is around us. So even though it was not overtly said, had I challenged this concept I was picking up on of 'happy happy happy'  — I'm sure that my parents would have met it with curiosity, and maybe displeasure — but we would have gotten to the other side of it." Launch The Bigger Picture We asked Suzanne what advice she had for fellow entrepreneurs who have a vision but aren't sure how to execute it. "I think where the faith and trust that I was creating something of value came from was listening to pain points in my community here locally and thinking, 'I have an answer for that.' So for entrepreneurs out there, I would say instead of just being inspired to make something, I would say to really look at the problem and look at what you're creating as a solution." This really resonated with us, because it truly encompasses what Suzanne and Generation Mindful are about - creating solutions that enrich families lives and enable them to live more mindfully. Chet Zar: Finding Happiness & Success from an Art Career in The Dark Arts

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2019 95:21

Leave Us A Review Chet Zar has garnered a legion of international fans and art collectors from his fine art paintings of dark and surreal creatures. We sat down with him this week to find out what his inspiration is behind his 'monster' art, and how he keeps such a positive attitude while immersed in a world that many people would be fearful of. Starting his career in the film industry, Chet's talent for creating Hollywood special effects lead him to work on major Hollywood productions such as The Ring, Hellboy 1 and 2, Planet Of The Apes and critically acclaimed music videos for the band Tool. Disillusioned with the politics and artistic compromises he felt he was having to make in his career, at age 33 Chet left the movie industry behind — to follow his bliss. Chet is quite possibly one of the most philosophical and empathetic people that we have had the pleasure to chat with. An incredibly emotive artist, there is something extraordinary in the way that he uses his artistic outlet to work through emotional trauma. Rather than shying away from societal fears, Chet's art shines a light on them — showing people that they're not alone in their fears and anxieties. We talk about how an acid trip in a meat market caused him to have a vegan epiphany, as well as him trying (and failing) as a child, to terrify his mom with elaborate fake injuries. Chet gives us an illuminating look at the life experiences that have molded his dark — but beautiful — outlook on life. Inspirational Takeaways from Our Conversation with Dark Art Creator Chet Zar Shining a Light on Fear Chet is a master at creating art that highlights humanities inner psyche and neuroticism. As multifaceted beings, we all have both dark and light aspects of our character. From an early age, we are told by society that darkness is something we should suppress — but at what cost? Chet's art challenges the assumption that darkness is a negative outlet. "The worst thing that you can do, I think, is not acknowledging your shadow side or fear and keeping that hidden — keep that fear pushed down. That's when it creates problems — when you try to deny that this side exists inside of you." Patreon - The Artist's Peace of Mind Chet shared with us how using Patreon to help fund his art has allowed him the freedom to create and share with his fans in an organic way. He also stressed the need to build up a strong online following and the importance of offering value to your followers. Choosing to put his money where his mouth is, Chet supports around 70 other artists on the Patreon platform. "Patreon is whatever you make it. Some people have a Patreon with a tip jar, that's it — no tiers, no levels, they just say 'pay what you want.' And some people make that work. Some people say a dollar only, some people five dollars and up. And that's what kind of cool about it because you can do things that have never been done before — it's all up to your creativity and how you market." Preventing Burnout From creating art to hosting his podcast 'The Dark Arts Society,' Chet is relentless in his artistic pursuits. He explained to us that when he feels physically exhausted and emotionally drained, he allows himself a day or so to recuperate. "What I usually do is I work too hard, I go too long, and then I get to a point where my body says, "Okay, you have to stop." And then I just take a day or two off and watch movies on Netflix or something." Losing Your Ego Chet's passion for his art is so inspiring. He shared with us how important it is for him to lose his own ego during the creative process. "I feel like whatever is painting, which is this weird subconscious part of my mind, it will do a better job than my conscious, intelligent part will do. It's better than I am at art and creating meaning." Taking inspiration from the process of his childhood drawing, Chet strives to stay true to this purity and spirit when creating his art as an adult. Learn the Fundamentals of Art Understanding the technical aspects of painting is an important skill to master to express your ideas effectively. Chet chatted to us about how he encourages other artists to build upon their fundamental knowledge of art, such as composition and understanding color and lighting — especially when distorting reality. "Color temperature is so powerful. When you start throwing in different temperatures of the same colors, it makes the piece come alive." Chet expresses himself and his art in such a way that it's impossible not to acknowledge the beauty of our own vulnerability.   If you want to hear more from our conversation with Chet, click the link to our podcast and get ready to make friends with the monster under your bed (and inside of your head!) Alex Nerney: How He Built A Six-Figure A Month Blogging Empire - 034

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2019 70:45

Leave Us A Review Alex Nerney, along with his partner Lauren McManus, attract over 250,000 visitors & six-figure incomes from their blogs every month. We sat down with him this week to find out what the catalyst was for him to give up a thriving personal training career to transition to full-time blogging.  Alex embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship. Sharp, witty, and most importantly, creative, he has harnessed his passions and skills to turn blogging into a six-figure monthly income. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Alex is his passion for teaching other people how to succeed. Rather than carefully guarding his success, he is an open book full of tips, tricks, and advice on ways that you can work smarter - not harder.  We talked about how managing your expectations is everything and the reality that most people aren't overnight successes.  From trading hours for dollars, to accidentally shooting what looked like soft porn during his first blog attempt, Alex takes us on his hilarious and very human journey of putting himself out there and learning something new. Although Alex is careful to acknowledge that there is no surefire way to success, his optimism is infectious, and his work ethic is admirable. Key Takeaways Seize Opportunities Alex took a leap of faith into the world of blogging. After being invited to The Millionaire Fastlane Conference, he met other entrepreneurs and heard their success stories. This inspired him to create a scalable income and build his own dream - instead of someone else's.  From that moment, Alex began figuring out ways that he could monetize his interests, while also offering value to other people. Not Everything You Touch Will Turn To Gold (without a plan!) Alex's first foray into the world of blogging was not an instant success. The aptly named 'Health and Happy Hour' consisted of him and his buddy, sitting around at his dad's house, drinking and writing. Health and Happy Hour served as a learning curve for Alex. As he puts it, "We learned very quickly that the thing that we think is awesome, doesn't mean that everyone else thinks it's awesome." Understanding the need for a strategic marketing plan, Alex focussed on creating a definitive target demographic - which leads us to our next important takeaway. Develop An Avatar  Alex stresses the importance of creating an avatar of your potential customer, and really getting to know who they are. He believes that this shift in his mindset allowed him to really up his blogging game. When you create content, Alex recommends that you always ask questions through the eyes of your avatar during the process. Would the content you're creating resonate with them? Does it add value to their life? If you can answer these questions in the affirmative, it's likely that you will connect with your target person. The 'Poop' Phase is Okay One of our favorite takeaways from our chat with Alex (besides the penis jokes) were his views on starting out at something new. We all know that initial stage - where your expectations are not mirrored by your results and everything you put out there seems to be 'poop.' Alex explained to us that this is a necessary part of the growth process, whether you're blogging, learning an instrument, or playing a new sport. As you navigate through the poop stage and develop your skills, you will continue to get better and be more successful. These growing pains won't last forever, but they are an essential step in honing your craft. Variety is The Spice of Life If your passion is waning, it can be difficult to continue creating consistent content. Alex mitigates this by developing different outlets that he can focus on. From the insanely successful educational business Create & Go, to his more creative outlet WANDR, a travel vlog, he emphasizes the need to keep following ideas that fuel your fire. “I like working on the projects that I'm working on - And the ones that I don't, I'm getting much better at delegating to other people. Then every day is my own.” Monetize Your Skill Set Alex shared with us his recommended ways of making money from blogging - even if you don't have a product to sell. From utilizing ads and sponsored posts on your site, to aligning yourself with an amazon associates account, there are multiple ways that you can create streams of income from your blog. Once you feel confident enough to educate others and create your own product or service, you can scale your business even further. As explained by Alex, "80% of (our earned) $100k a month happens through the process of someone  reading a post, opting in for an email, and then getting sold a product." They are some wild figures to wrap your head around! Alex is truly an impressive business person. We learned so much from our chat with him and will absolutely be using some of the tips he shared with us! Contrary to popular belief, musicians and artists aren't always hungry for fame. We are fortunate for souls like Matt who really couldn't care less about where he was or how much he was making - all he needs is the music. This interview is a really special one for us.  Not only are we huge fans of Matt but over the past 10-12 years, he has become a dear friend and is someone that we have literally been around the Earth and back with.   Grundy is one of those gentle giants that you cannot help but fall in love with. We always meet in the middle on topics like jazz, poetry, Sam Harris and self-awareness...but realizing that he's also a ridiculous musician on top of the rest is motivating and humbling.   We think that if you asked Grundy he would say he is just along for the ride...but when you hear all he has on his mind and all he is up to, you quickly realize that he is far more than a backup musician. Leave Us A Review This week we got to chat with professional competitive surfer and big wave charger Torrey Meister. In this interview, we took the opportunity to ask all the questions you would want to ask a big wave surfer, such as: What is on your mind right before you drop in? Do you ever hesitate? Do you worry about dying? Do you worry about sharks? How did you find the courage to go back after some of your major injuries?  We met Torrey this past summer when he came by our house with our favorite Sanuk rep Adam Walker.  We didn't know who he was at the time but we adored his quiet demeanor, and most of all, the way he treated our kids.  They played magnet blocks for an hour and our three year old twin boys taught him how to smash things. Later that same night we went to an event to watch a surf film that he was in, and it was a strange moment realizing this guy charging Pipeline and JAWS was the same guy that had been playing toys and talking about his family in my living room. In this interview, our goal was to put together the pieces of a big wave surfers mentality.  How can you be a religious and humble family man but also charge 60-foot waves?  We needed to bridge the gap. Torrey is humble, loving, one of a kind and I hope we got to all the questions you would want to ask a big wave surfer!  But Also: JAWS Kona the dog Shane Dorian Taylor Steel Kelly Slater Big Island Gemini Big Wave Surfing vs Competitive Surfing The Banzai Pipeline Backdoor Pipeline Mavericks Links & Resources: Wipeout of the year - JAWS Injury Backdoor Aaron Gold Sustainable Surf Connect with Torrey Meister Instagram Twitter Facebook Website  Connect with The Shifting Perceptions Podcast: Shifting Perceptions Website Join Our Mailing List Facebook Instagram Twitter Connect with Jay Alders Jay Alders Website Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube Pinterest  Connect with Chelsea Alders & Companies Om Mamas Doulas Website Sun Dreams Productions Website Instagram Chelsea Om Mamas Doulas Sun Dreams Productions

According to the Holotropic website, “it is a powerful approach to self-exploration and personal empowerment that relies on our innate inner wisdom and its capacity to move us toward positive transformation and wholeness.” Tell me more about Holotropic Breathwork This modality originated from a deep curiosity about the psychedelic experience which led founder Stanislav Grof to scientific studies on the subject.  Holotropic Breathwork mimics some of the emotional, mental and physical responses to psychedelics without the need for external substances introduced into the body. What are the Benefits? Personal transformation happens during these sessions. The benefits extend beyond just the biographical dimension. We can re-connect with and heal past trauma from our birth up to the present moment. Leave Us a Review We have been by enamored by Paula Fuga's passion and love for music since the moment we met her 11 years ago.  In this interview Paula walks us through those first moments as a three year old singing in the car to living homeless on the beach in Hawaii.   Paula's story is filled with twists and turns and the one thing you learn as you listen is that she truly was always meant to be a singer and performer.  Her voice is just the beginning of her magic.  Stop what you are doing and pay attention to this one…Paula's poetry is breathtaking. She holds a belief that she is 'of the stars' and a 'star child'. She lives knowing that she was meant to change this world for the better...and holy moly, that voice of hers.    Paula is a natural story teller and we probably could have chatted for  hours. We loved learning about the steps it took to get her to where she is now, performing in front of thousands alongside music greats like Jack Johnson, John Cruz, Damian Marley and Mike Love. And oh, by the way was was invited three times to perform at the White House while Barack Obama was in office.  Paula says she doesn't believe in luck. Instead, she follows her intuition and signs from the Universe knowing that she'll be led to the where she belongs. Paula finds positivity and the silver lining on everything. An early rejection from American Idol ended up being a good thing for her. A car accident she passed by inspired her to write her most well known song, Country Road, which made a long standing collaboration with Jack Johnson possible. Even being homeless as a child with a mother on drugs is something she is grateful for since it let her become a more relatable mentor to children. Paula Fuga lives on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii with her husband and has a new album coming out this year.   Our Favorite Quotes From This Interview:  "You can't rush magic, magic happens in its own time" - Paula Fuga  “I come from the stars, I am full of magic and so is my music” - Paula Fuga “When I get into that meditative space, when I close my eyes, when I sing I am transported to the stars…in my vision when I close my eyes, all I see is space and the stars are huge but they are far away from me…I always felt like I was a star, like an actual star in the heavens” - Paula Fuga But Also: Byron Bay Blues Fest Roosters North Shore Hawaii Asian American Women Michelle Obama Links & Resources: Barack Obama.
