The thread which weaves our conversation together this week, is our desire for connecting more deeply with nature. From planes powered by humans to barefoot hiking boots, Ben and I continue to consider how we may better change our lives to be more natural. Further, I contemplate whether recent events are some sort of sign that the path I'm currently taking, is the correct one. Our artist of the week is Brett Dennen. You might not realize that singer Jenny Owen Youngs has written a ton of songs for other people, including Panic! At The Disco, Pitbull, and Brett Dennen, to name a few. Her new album Avalanche dropped last week and includes several collaborators including S. Carey, Madi Diaz, and The Antlers' Peter Silberman, who helped co-write “It's Later Than You Think,” which warns about lost time scrolling.
Podcaster, #1 hit songwriter, human and dog mother, gay icon Jenny Owen Youngs returns with her first full length album since 2012! In the last decade plus, Jenny has experienced a wild ride of changes like divorce, extreme grief, moving across the country, remarrying, etc. Her main project while not writing, recording and tour, she hosts podcasts like the very successful Buffering The Vampire Slayer alongside her ex-wife, Kristin Russo ("A Buffy The Vampire Slayer" rewatch pod, which is now an X-Files rewatch show called The Ex-Files). She also has songwriting credits for Panic! At the Disco, Pitbull, Ingrid Michaelson, and Brett Dennen thanks to her deal with Dan Wilson (Semisonic and epic co-writer) and his publishing company.JOY's new album Avalanche covers a lot of hard topics (see earlier: divorce, grief, moving, remarrying) and was produced by angel human Josh Kaufman (Taylor Swift, The National, The Hold Steady, Josh Ritter, and so on...). Jenny has always been an artist who is not afraid to show her whole self: good and the bad. Case in point: She described the inspiration for her very first break-through song "Fuck Was I" as "horrible, horrible, horrible decision making," adding it was "just your classic love gone wrong hell." Never one to back down from a fight, Jenny's approaching these songs with honesty, bravery and her biting sense of humor. It's cliche to say that talking to Jenny is a JOY, but it's a cliche for a reason. This week on No Simple Road we are super excited to have Trevor Hall as our guest! Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion - it was his life's art. At sixteen, he recorded his first album. Shortly after, Hall left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music. Hall's music, a blend of roots and folk music with touches of electronic elements, is imbued with a deep love of Eastern Mysticism. This powerful symbiosis fostered a deep connectivity with his growing fan base and Trevor quickly matured into a leader of the burgeoning conscious musical community. Along with numerous pilgrimages to India, he has sold out the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado as a headliner and he also completed a series of sold-out international tours with artists such as Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Franti, John Butler Trio, Matisyahu and Brett Dennen. We talk with Trevor about: How being an introvert at heart translates to being a musician. His experiences of getting signed to a major label at the age of 16 and how it affected him. How being treated like a 'product' took its toll on his mental state and self confidence. What the genesis of his spiritual journey looked like. Some of his experiences in traveling to India and practicing Yoga. How "the Great In Between' and the new album came to be. The ways in which becoming a Father have fundamentally changed him for the better. ... and much, much more! Brett Dennen is a songwriter, painter and summer camp enthusiast. His camp experience was instrumental in developing his musicality. He attended Camp Jack Hazard in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where young Brett was enamored with the music his camp counselors would play on guitar around the campfire. He was introduced to Paul Simon, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and John Denver thanks to his counselors and his parents. He really developed as a songwriter in college at UC Santa Cruz. After school, he wove himself into the LA songwriter scene, which in the early 2000's was a haven for musicians like himself, Alexi Murdoch, Damien Rice and Josh Ritter. He developed a large fanbase that remains loyal to this day.Brett talks about running his own summer camp, Camp Dennen, which allows him to create community through nature and art. He shares his experience of writing and thinking about being a dad and how that relates to the reality of fatherhood. And he talks about decidedly not being in the cool crowd and also not caring about it… well not caring about it as much as he used to. Brett's written some of my favorite songs of the 21st century. It was an honor to have him on the pod!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Brett Dennen seems to always land on the bright side, and his newest song, “This Is Gonna Be The Year” reflects his musings: "It's about being brand new again,” he says. “When something, an idea, or an actual thing, is so new that you don't know what it's going to be like yet. You don't know how far it can go or how great it can be. You can only imagine.”

More goofy Halloween fun this week, as we flip through the book An Old School Halloween and learn about the costumes of Ben Cooper Inc. We discuss the odd history of Ben Cooper's Spider-Man costume, why Yoda was blue, how Fonzie's catchphrase was bungled, why Scooby Doo looked like Scrappy Doo, and the awesomeness of the Sleestak costume. Singer songwriter Brett Dennen just embarked on his first post-pandemic tour, which brought him through Indianapolis on July 9th. He and WTTS morning host Matt Pelsor talked about his new album, “See The World,” which he finished just before the world shut down, and how the confluence of a finished album and a global pandemic affected him mentally. They also talk about fatherhood, wine, art, and their shared love of the great outdoors.
For the past ten years, Brett Dennen – with his poet's perspective, off-kilter vocals, insane sense of humor, and limitless musical freedom – has turned dancing like no one's watching into a lifestyle. As a songwriter, performer, watercolor artist, and environmental conservationist and outdoorsman, the shows he performs and the events he hosts generate more than good vibes. His impact has been to gather like-minded music fans to consistently try to make the world a better place. Brett has toured with the likes of Jason Mraz, John Mayer, and Trevor Hall. His songs have been heard on shows like Grey's Anatomy, and Parenthood, and movies like Horrible Bosses and August Osage County. brettdennen.live
Grizzly Goat's music is as the band's name suggests, undomesticated. Grizzly's blend of folk-rock spans the entire breadth of the Americana genre; from soft and sincere campfire ballads to rocking electric harmonica solos on top of pounding drums and flailing banjo. The band is hardworking and tireless. They've brought their rootsy compositions from coast to coast in their white passenger van. Whether at a festival or a small scale BBQ joint, Grizzly Goat's aim is to connect with their audience on an individual level, building a relationship with each listener. Specifically, the band has supported acts such as Greensky Bluegrass, Jim Avett, River Whyless, Town Mountain, Jamestown Revival, and Brett Dennen, along with playing at such festivals as the John Hartford Memorial Fest, Treefort Music Festival, Mayesfest, Forest Fest, Decatur BBQ Blues and Bluegrass Fest, Zion Canyon Music Fest, and the kick-off for the Cold Mountain Music Festival. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week's guest is Mark Stepro. Mark is the epitome of an LA-based working drummer with a resume that includes recording and/or performing with The Wallflowers, Ben Kweller, Courtney Love, Jackson Browne, Brett Dennen, Keith Urban, Dwight Yoakam, John Prine, Butch Walker, Leon Bridges…the list certainly goes on. Mark has an infectious energy and we actually shared lockouts across from each other in LA for about a year without ever realizing it. I always just heard this great drummer across the hall that reminded me how much I needed to work on my feel. So thanks Mark. We start the show with walk down memory lane before hopping into Mark's top 5 influences that made him into the drummer he is today. Cheers! Musician Brett Dennen has a message for the summer: “See the World.” That's the new of his new album and single, and at least to these ears, it comes at a fortuitous time. Outside of music, Dennen is known for his climate activism, artwork, and love of the outdoors. This summer, he'll perform in our listening area on July 24 at City Winery Hudson Valley in Montgomery, in Orange County, and July 25 at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Connecticut.
Before writing songs, Brett Dennen was a painter. His practice seems to have informed his perspective on songwriting as his canvas turned to the page. A keen observer, Dennen directs us to go out and experience what life has to offer on “See The World.”

I am incredibly grateful to connect with Trevor Hall at this really unique time, and receive his musical medicine. We discuss his spiritual belief structures, where they have come from and how he alchemizes them into the lyrics of his amazing songs. He also goes deep on the duality that COVID-19 has created for his industry. On one hand there is an immense desire to be creative, and on the other… Live performance art has slammed to a deafening halt. We also discuss the need for forgiveness, and as a special treat, Trevor performs a few of his songs. 032: Rich HinmanGood Morning, we're back. This is Play It Like It's Music, I'm Trevor. Thanks for listening. On Wednesday, March 25th of 2020 music is not content! It’s connection.Do we need it now more than ever? You tell me. After you get your masks and your bleach wipes and your cans of beans, let me know.[photo by Robbie Jeffers]Seriously, I am ready for everything… to be normal again. Not happening, of course, but I’ve never felt readier! Those old things I used to worry about, I’d love to keep worrying about those things! So delicious, such quaint little worries. Ah, they seem so distant but in fact they’re just buried under a new load of worries.**Maybe you heard?I feel like we’re all standing in the middle of this rope bridge, all 8 billion of us. Everybody knows the thing’s about to break, nobody has anywhere to run. Scary stuff, some people might get a soft landing, others might have everything they ever wanted and still not make it. Really makes you wonder what’s really important.I said this last week and I’ll say it again in a different way: If I’m going down, I’m gonna go down playing. Those musicians on the deck of the Titanic didn’t really have anything else to do, though we all do have to keep on the lookout for ways we can help. For now, make the music. Put it out there. Forget the fear, wondering where it all goes. For all you know this is the best time.I make music to be less afraid. I produce it, teach it, perform it. And it works.Today’s guest is the amazing Rich Hinman. Composer, producer, guitar and pedal steel player living in Los Angeles. He has worked most memorably with Sara Bareilles, kd lang, Rosanne Cash, St. Vincent, Vulfpeck, Brett Dennen and many others. You can pick him out from a mile away.In this episode we get a tour of the pedal steel guitar along with Rich’s backstory, his origins and the usual assortment of reflections on life and craft that make this show what it is. After a brief pause for the cause, *The Upful LIFE Podcast* is back with Episode 026 featuring Ryan Jalbert of The Motet. In late December, on the heels of The Motet's co-headline funkstravaganza at the Fillmore with KDTU, Ryan and I finally caught up for an hour in downtown San Francisco. Jalbert was on his way to a jazz show at the Black Cat, but took timeout to make sure we got the proper time for a powwow. I've been a fan of his for several years now, and Ryan has been a listener to this podcast since almost the beginning too, as such it was a pretty cool dynamic for the interview. We basically just kicked it for a while, chopped it up about his path taken, with some attention to detail and the typical musical/cultural rabbit holes. RYAN JALBERT INTRO > CONVO begins at 14:30 First, a contest giveaway! VI Jam Fest in St. John, US.VI!! Enter to win two free tickets with camping, value $630 USD! Just share this post on the Upful LIFE Facebook page, OR LEAVE A REVIEW ON UPFUL LIFE iTUNES & send an email to B.Getz@upfullife.com After the contest information, we jump into the interview with Ryan Jalbert. This conversation covers his entire musical journey, from his childhood in Western Mass, learning the guitar, loving the blues as a kid, up through college, Phish tours, the music scene in the Northeast in the early 2000s, working with Brett Dennen, Leslie Helpert, joining The Motet, and then his 15-year odyssey that continues up through their most recent LP Death or Devotion. We finish with a little bit on his side project Jalbatross with brother Colin, as well as some of his recent favorite artists. Welcome to My Life Mission, a program where I interview people about their life, work, and passion. Today I sit down with professional musician and songwriter Zach Heckendorf, a Colorado native and well-known dude here in Denver. We discuss the songwriting process (Zach takes us through a few songs on guitar), the state of modern acoustic music in America, the drive it takes to be an independent musician, what Zach has learned from the last 10 years of his career, how he got started as a teen, and what he plans to do with his life. Who is Zach? By age 18, Denver native Zach Heckendorf had signed his first record deal, released his first album, played Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre and shared stages with Rodrigo y Gabriela, John Butler Trio, Brett Dennen, The Lumineers, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Guster, and One Republic. John Alagia was born in Louisville, KY and played in rock bands from an early age. He slowly transitioned into the studio with his buddy, and band mate, Doug Derryberry after graduating from Georgetown University. Doug and John began producing acts out of their basement studio in Northern Virginia and ultimately extended their scope throughout the mid Atlantic. Notables in the early days were Dave Matthews Band, Ben Folds Five, Vertical Horizon and Edwin McCain just to name a few. After several years playing with Doug Derryberry, John decided to focus on studio production instead of performing live. He converted a house on the eastern shore of Maryland to a recording studio. That era in the early 2000s bred the debut albums for John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Rachael Yamagata, Josh Kelly, and hosted the likes of Lifehouse, Dave Matthews, Mandy Moore, and many others. In 2005, John left to work on a project with Liz Phair out at the Village studios in LA while maintaining his place in Maryland. Bouncing between LA, MD and NYC, he had the opportunity to work with Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock, Brett Dennen, and Lukas Nelson among others. He considers the Village his home these days. instagram.com/johnalagia/

Graham Nash, Dan Baird, Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, Brett Dennen, and Crystal Bowersox join Eric in conversation to share memories and pay tribute to the life and work of Tom Petty. Hear Graham relay a story of Tom working on The Hollies road crew in 1966, Dan Baird's appreciation of Tom's uncanny ability to write a killer first line, Rich seeing Tom Petty for the first time with Rick Rubin, Brett's reaction as a kid when his parents got the first Traveling Wilburys record, and Crystal's exceptional parenting in turning her nine year old son onto Tom Petty's music. Lots of funny stories, behind the scenes memories, praise, kind words, laughter and tears in homage to one of the world's greatest, gone too soon. Part 1 of 2, maybe 3.

In the very first episode of The Ezra Lipp Hour (More or Less), I speak with guitarist, singer and multi-instrumentalist Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz. Lebo is best known as the guitarist and co-founder of the Bay Area based rock/jam band Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) but he is also an accomplished and ubiquitous side man having performed with a slew of incredible artists and bands including Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh & Friends, Melvin Seals, Brokedown in Bakersfield, Brett Dennen, Bill Kreutzmann, Steve Kimock and many more. He also has his own band Lebo & Friends. In the first part of this conversation (Part 2 will be a little down the road) we speak of the roots of his musical journey including the formation of ALO with childhood friends Zach Gill and Steve Adams in junior high. We trace Lebo's life trajectory of friendship and music and the different paths took and lessons learned to get to where Lebo is now in his career. We also discuss the unifying links between Donald Trump, Jesus, Hitler and James Brown. Please enjoy! www.ALOMusic.com www.lebomusic.com
Working Class Audio Session #097 with Matt Ross-Spang!!! Matt Ross-Spang , born in Memphis, began working at the Legendary Sun Studio when he was just 16, working his way up from intern to the Chief Engineer. He championed to bring the recording studio back to its origin, working hard to find, install and use the same period equipment that Sam Phillips engineered with in the 1950s. His 11 years of dedication to Sun and its signature sound garnered national attention when he was featured by Lester Holt for NBC’s Nightly News and the Today Show. NPR also featured Matt and his work on All Things Considered. "It's fantastic that [Ross-Spang] has pursued this with such scholarly devotion," says Peter Guralnick, author of the definitive, two-part Presley biography, Last Train to Memphis and the recently released biography, Sam Phillips The Man Who Invented Rock and Roll.. "Sam was systematic in thinking about sound and gave great thought to it — no square angles; the tiles. In addition, he felt there was something unique about the room at 706 Union. He didn't know it when he rented it. To have reconstituted it is an exercise in creative archeology." In 2015 Matt left Sun to venture out on his own as an engineer and producer. His first project post Sun was to engineer and mix Jason Isbell’s “Something More Than Free” for acclaimed Producer Dave Cobb which would award him his first Grammy. The record broke several records debuting at #1 on the Country, Rock, Folk and Indie Charts. It also broke Americana Radio chart records , staying #1 for over 25 weeks. The record won Grammys for Best Americana Album and Best Americana Song for (24 Frames). Since then Matt hasn’t slowed down ...engineering recent releases by The Drive By Truckers, Elle King, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Chris Isaak, The Rival Sons, Corb Lund, Lori Mckenna, Brett Dennen, Brent Cobb, Amanda Shires, Anderson East, The Sheepdogs and the concept album “Southern Family”. Matt also engineered, mixed and Co-Produced Margo Price’s debut album; entitled “Midwestern Farmer’s Daughter” the record was made in 3 days in 2014 at Sun Studio and released on Third Man Records. The record debuted in the top 10 Billboard country charts to critical acclaim and is already considered one of the best albums of 2016. Matt most recently was hired by Sony Records to mix 18 previously unreleased songs by Elvis Presley from historic 1976 sessions in the Jungle Room at Graceland which was released in August of 2016. Matt also recently produced albums on Sean Rowe, Patrick Sweany and UK artist Emily Barker. The City of Memphis named him one of its “30 under 30” Memphians in 2015 as well as honoring him with a key to the city in 2016. The City of Germantown also named a day after Ross-Spang in 2016. Matt and Matt join each other over Skype for a conversation about's Matt's journey.
Trevor stopped by the kitchen table for this truly inspiring episode of IAH. Trevor's gift to the world is his song but what transpires through his music, being and soul is so much more. Like so many of the great artists who came before him, Trevor is thoughtful, smart, intuitive, aware and you get the feeling when talking to him that he's seeing the world in the way that others are not. Our conversation ranged from his early days and upbringing, spirituality in life and music, why love really does heal all wounds and the quest to constantly explore and be a seeker. I'm somewhat of a late convert to Trevor's music and am so grateful that I get to discover this well of brilliance at this point in life. INTRO RANT - When did anti-intellcualism and the celebration of ignorance become the norm? From trevorhallmusic.com: As an eleven year old, playing harmonica beside his father in South Carolina, music quickly became Trevor’s most intimate companion, guide and creative outlet. In his elementary years, he began to write his own songs and perform them locally. At sixteen he recorded his first record, and the following year he left South Carolina to study classical guitar at Idyllwild Arts Academy, an international boarding school east of Los Angeles. There, Trevor was introduced to yoga and certain spiritual practices found in India, which greatly influenced his music and his life journey. During his senior year, Trevor signed a record deal with Geffen Records and his career as a musician formally began. Trevor quickly broke through the music scene, with such early accomplishments in his career as having a song recorded on the Shrek the Third soundtrack, as well as joining a series of sold-out tours with artists such as Steel Pulse, The Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti, SOJA, Brett Dennen and Colbie Callait. Trevor’s quick rise on the scene, however, was ripe with challenges that conflicted with his spiritual life and devotional practice. In order to parallel his life’s path with the messages in his music, Trevor moved into a traditional Hindu ashram in Southern California in 2008. When not on tour, he lived as a monk and devoted his days to spiritual practice and service. His involvement with the temple affected his music and his music quickly became his practice. www.trevorhallmusic.com

Por Favor is the sixth album from this baby faced, high tenored singer whose profound songs compel us to take him more seriously.
Recorded on April 1, 2015. Listening to Jeff LeBlanc’s new album My Own Way There is like driving with the top down. With Jeff at the wheel, he takes you on a winding road through a varied landscape of songs and stories. The opening track, This Moment rings like a mission statement for LeBlanc’s journey; the lyric “you’ve come too far to have to turn back now” depicts his unwavering perseverance on the path to achieving something to call his own. Jeff and his Jeep logged over 70,000 miles this past year, encompassing hundreds of theaters, clubs and college campuses, taking him from coast to coast. Along the way, he’s been called upon to support a diverse array of artists including Gavin DeGraw, Colbie Caillat, Goo Goo Dolls, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Dennen, Matt Nathanson, Luke Bryan, Lifehouse, Chris Isaak, Parachute and many more. As a self-managed artist, his continuous grass-roots efforts has built him a dedicated following – a following longing for his third studio album. My Own Way There was released on July 30th, 2013 and debuted in the Top 10 of the ITunes Singer/Songwriter Chart. For more on Jeff’s music, go to www.jeffleblancmusic.com/music. Today's music world is filled with exceedingly talented artists who are not easily placed in a stylistic box. Maybe they're too twangy to be categorized as ‘rock,' or not commercial or vapid enough to be called ‘pop.' Or maybe they're just too damn good to fit into the new corporate structure of modern music. Tom Freund is just this kind of artist. He spent the 90s as a member of the indie-cult institution, The Silos, and began releasing albums under his own name in 1998. Since then, he has racked up an impressive list of accolades from rags like The New York Times and The Washington Post and made music with his musical confidante Ben Harper, as well as artists like Jackson Brown, Greg Leisz, jazz organ virtuoso Jimmy Smith, Graham Parker, Brett Dennen and Mandy Moore. Freund can shift easily between instruments like guitar, piano, ukulele, upright and electric bass and sing his insightful and catchy songs in a slightly raspy tenor that wins over even jaded Los Angeles audiences. He has a brand new live album called “The Stronghold Tapes” and will be touring internationally to support it.

In our last episode we talked about how artists can feel besieged from all sides. Fans, promoters, labels — when you’re talented and famous everyone wants a piece of you. Today’s guest is one of the most important people in a musician’s life. He’s the guy that keeps the vultures at bay, and makes sure the artists can focus on their music. He is The Manager. Michael McDonald is the founder of the boutique artist management company Mick Management, home to artists like Brett Dennen and Ray LaMontagne. One of Michael’s most popular artists, John Mayer, has gone from a small-time musician with a street team to a multi-platinum artist with an amazing fan interaction on twitter. John Mayer later abandoned Twitter (and nearly 4 million followers) when he decided it was too limiting. Michael talked with us about how artists experiment with promotion and social media (sometimes with mixed results), and how managers help deal with the demands placed on artists.
