Album of the Week: Stephie James -- These Days I forgot to talk about this in the podcast itself but These Days is my favorite album this week. I enjoy the way James builds an entire alternate universe out of these five songs. It’s like traveling down a road you know by heart -- except it turns out that’s not actually true. In 2011 International drumming competition Hit Like A Girl was conceived by David Levine of TRX Cymbals. David felt that the musical products industry was not serving the female drumming community so he wanted to create a platform that would promote and support their development. After enlisting the help of Mindy Abovitz of Tom Tom Magazine, and Phil Hood and Andy Doerschuk at DRUM! Magazine, and the Hit Like A Girl Contest was born. Since the HLAG launched it has attracted 2000+ contestants from 50 countries and has generated tens of millions of page views and fan votes around the world. HLAG has significantly helped raise the visibility of female drummers and spotlighted the efforts of girls and women. This special episode features Hit Like A Girl founder David Levine as well as eight female drummers and percussionists from around the world who have all been involved with the competition at various stages.
