In episode 283 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Jason Reeves. Jason is the Founder of Embers Woodcraft, a charity which offers bushcraft experiences, workshops and a range of other activities that bring people together and focus on the natural environment's power to improve their mental health. Jason began his career in the military, joining the Parachute Regiment at the age of 19, serving in Northern Ireland during The Troubles in 2Para. He then left the Paras and worked offshore on an oil rig for a year, before joining the Fire Brigade as a firefighter. He served in Kent Fire Brigade for 28 years at various stations in the county, and he will be retiring from the Fire Service in May 2025. Jason set up Embers in March 2024 and made it a C.I.C in September 2024. They currently put on one workshop a month and exclusively cater to helping male and female current and ex-emergency service personnel, as well as serving and non-serving military personnel. For Jason's mental health journey, his passion for mental health also stemmed from his own mental health difficulties as well as his family's. At the end of 2023, Jason found something in the back of his brain, which he feared was a brain tumour but thankfully turned out to be a benign cyst. However, between discovering it and the eventual reality, the cyst caused him to experience late-stage epilepsy. Thankfully there were no seizures, but he did experience tingling sensations in parts of his body which he could not explain at the time. After doctors believed he was having a stroke, they did a brain scan and found a cyst the size of a 50p piece. In addition, in 2023 his eldest daughter experienced her own mental health difficulties, which included self-harm, and it caused Jason immense stress and difficulty managing her mental health towards recovery. In this episode we chart Jason's career across the armed forces and fire brigade, how it led to his work with Embers now, his passion for men's mental health and utilising the power of nature, the outdoors and walking and talking to help men. We then discuss how the cyst impacted his physical and mental health, his relationship with his daughter during her mental health difficulties and after she recovered, his plans for retirement and his plans for taking Embers to the next level in the years to come. Starr's Mill basketball is preparing for another season! The girls look to be set for another successful season under head coach Emily Sweeney. The boys on the other hand have had to work many things out, including a new coach in Jason Reeves and a fresh roster. The girls begin their season by hosting Ola at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 9. The boys start their season by traveling to Sandy Creek to face off against the Sandy Creek Patriots at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12.

Billy Hawn is a drummer-percussionist who has recorded or shared the stage with such artists as Jason Reeves, Colbie Caillat, Andy Grammer, Katy Perry, Sara Bareilles, Delta Goodrem, Brett Dennen, Charlotte Martin, Pat Green, Mandy Moore, Jason Michael Carroll, Glen Phillips, Tristan Prettyman, Steve Poltz, David Crosby, Dana Carvey, The Indigo Girls, Jackson Browne, Joey Ryan, Damien Rice, Amber Rubarth, Garrison Starr and many others. Alex G is a Colorado-raised, LA-based singer/songwriter, dreamer, sister, and friend. She is an old soul who loves Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, and a childlike believer in all things daring and magical and pure. Formerly afraid to sing in front of people, Alex began her career by posting videos to YouTube from the quiet safety of her home. Her channel quickly gained a following, moving Alex away from her fear and toward a career as a musician. Now, four years in the making, her channel has over 1.3 million subscribers and 160 million views. In September 2014, after years of writing music and the release of two EPs, Alex released her self-titled debut album. While preparing for this album, Alex had the opportunity to collaborate with several incredible songwriters and producers, including Lauren Christy, Mikal Blue, Jason Reeves, and Jason Mraz. You’ve never heard of Jason Reeves? … He made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. duh! Well that's actually a lie..but Jason did work for George Lucas. Which is pretty damn cool. We got to talk with Jason recently about what it was like working for Lucas Arts in its final years before being bought by Disney. One of the really interesting aspects about his job was that Jason had already been working in the Toronto Animation scene for over a decade. So this was a pretty big move to uproot his family from Toronto to LA for a job.
