As a child, did you ask lots of questions? For many veterinary professionals, a desire to know how things worked (such as biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) came naturally when we were young. In fact, a love of learning is needed to grow and constantly improve in this field. There is always a new technology or device to try, an emerging medication to explore, and cutting-edge surgical procedure to practice. For Dr. Fabian Rivers, curiosity played a large role in his success. When asked what three qualities most contributed to his achievements, he answered with “curiosity, community, and composure.” Quite fittingly, his mission is to, “Remain curious about life.” On this episode of 21 Questions with Vet Candy, we meet the amazing Dready Vet, Dr. Fabian Rivers, and he tells us about his love for vegan goat curry and how he had to explain to "Megatron's" pet parent that he was actually a she! Veterinarian. Musician. Author. Actor. Those are the titles Dr. Greg is known for. And though he serves on multiple boards as a consultant as well as a mentor for aspiring veterinarians, he also understands that there's more to life than just “work.” In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that most veterinarians work full time, often clocking more than 40 hours per week – including nights and weekends. That's a whole lot of time dedicated to caring for others. As such, vets need to be careful not to lose their sense of self and become consumed by work identities. Remember, you are more than your job! Dr. Shaw explains: “My mission in life is to inspire the world to dream in a way that transcends professional or societal norms and to create your own path and own who you were created to be. Your purpose. Your dreams. Your way.” On this episode of 21 Questions with Vet Candy, we learn about the time Dr. Greg bought a ticket to Thailand on a whim and how if he had a time machine, he would use it to go back in time to jam with Charlie Parker.
For millions of people (and pets) around the globe, life changed when Covid-19 hit. Before the pandemic, it was easy to book an appointment with a veterinarian. But during the scariest days of the virus outbreak, suddenly pet owners had to wait weeks before getting the veterinary care their beloved fur babies needed. Unable to see as many patients as he normally would, Dr. Zonram Liao knew something had to be done. Thus, Wellnergy Pets was born! Dr. Liao explains, “I believe that pet care, at its core, starts with a proactive approach at home with pet owners. My goal is to improve the lives of people and their pets by providing the best at-home pet care in the form of high-quality pet products and supplements.” From managing a pet's chronic disease to helping clients avoid unnecessary trips to the vet, Wellnergy offers safe and effective solutions. It takes a long time to become a veterinarian. In addition to elementary school and high school, there is undergrad and then another several years completing a DVM. But when all is said and done, endless opportunities await, and that's a very exciting feeling. For Brittney Kilgore, every second has been worth it. In addition to all that schooling, she has been a veterinary technician and assistant for seven years. Now, the doors are wide open for her. Dr. Kilgore's ultimate mission in life? “To be happy within and outside of my career,” she says. “I want to continue to open the doors to less common avenues of veterinary medicine such as feline only medicine and integrative practices while also emphasizing how important it is to maintain your life outside of work with relationships, your health, and your own leisure.” In five years, she hopes to be “my same self but a little wiser and experienced.” And (if the stars align) also open her own feline only hospital in the future! Meet this veterinary rising star on 21 Questions with Vet Candy. We love you for listening! ▷ LET'S BECOME FRIENDS!!
Pet animals and their human owners (or, as our expert guest likes to call them, "pet parents") truly share a special connection that transcends species and biology. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, over 80 households in the United States owned dogs, cats, birds, and horses back in 2017-2018. Why are we so inclined to consider animals as part of the family, so much so that it is a genuine heartbreak when they leave us? What are the most common diseases pet parents should look out for in their pet's breed and age? Are the anatomy and physiology of animals truly different from humans? We are joined today by Dr. Zonram Liao, a board-certified general practice veterinarian and the Founder and CEO of Wellnergy Pets, the only pet product company fully staffed by actively practicing veterinarians and veterinary nurses. He received his BS in Biology from UC San Diego in 2011 and DVM from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2017, fulfilling his clinical studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Zonram currently practices in multiple small animal clinics throughout Southern California regions, hoping to give back to the community that helped raise him. He appeared on national television in 2021, where the Wellnergy Dental Wipes and Water Additive won "America's Big Deal" on USA Network, making it now available for purchase at Lowe's retail company nationwide. Although Dr. Serena Nayee, deeply cares about animals, she almost chose a very different path. She has always walked a fine line between human and animal health for a long time. Although Dr. Serena has no regrets about her choices, one of the hardest career decisions she made was to choose between animal and human health. She believes both have a serious problem with equality and accessibility. At one point during her studies, she actually considered leaving veterinary medicine for a path towards human health. Dr. Serena found it difficult to justify the cost of veterinary studies when there was such a huge gap to fill in the world of human health. Fortunately for animals everywhere, Dr. Serena did decide to stick with her veterinary career. While there are problems with equity and fairness in human medicine, that problem is also in veterinary medicine. Her major goal is to help close that gap. Dr. Serena believes that one of the biggest problems facing the veterinary industry today is the inaccessibility of education and healthcare available. She believes that education and healthcare should be inclusive for everyone, and that it should not be difficult to access. That's why she created Chapter VII! Check her out on 21 Questions with Vet Candy and learn how she's on a mission to make veterinary care accessible to all ▷ LET'S BECOME FRIENDS!!

Loving what you do for work isn't a requirement to have a successful career. But it sure helps! Luckily for Dr. Craig Clifford, the hours fly by when he is at work. That's because for this veterinarian, medical oncology and improving the lives of pets is what he was made for. “I truly love what I do,” he says. Dr. Clifford is a graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine and received an MS degree in Animal Science/Virology from the University of Delaware. Following an internship and a medical oncology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, he went on to later become a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) in 2003. After that, it was off to Director of Clinical Studies and Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and Hope Veterinary Specialists, where he was their first medical oncologist and Director of Clinical Studies. His more recent accomplishments are equally impressive! Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. International Women's Day is March 8th and the goal is to raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. That's something that we need a lot of in our profession. In 2017, for the first time in history, women finally became the majority in the veterinary field. Today, the AVMA says that 2/3 of all veterinarians are exclusively small animal practioners; of these, 63% are female. Women also make up 85% of all veterinary students, while veterinary technicians are about 90% female. Sadly, although women outnumber men in the veterinary field, they are still underrepresented in higher management roles. This month, we are celebrating Dr. Christine Royal, the AVP of Companion Animal and Equine Business at Merck Animal Health. Dr. Christine is a woman who has taken the reins and proved her worth in a male dominated industry, shaping the world for the women that will come after her. In this issue, you can read more about her journey and how she wants to use her success to elevate others. We love you for listening! ▷ LET'S BECOME FRIENDS!!

Not only did she fall in love with veterinary medicine, she was confident in the path set before her—to become a veterinary surgeon after completing a residency at NYC's Animal Medical Center. She realized her dream in 2014, becoming a board-certified surgeon. In this issue, we also have some other great tips to increase your surgical confidence and to help you lead a healthier lifestyle, including a Ashtanga yoga!
Has anyone ever told you that you weren't good enough? I asked a former colleague this question many years ago and she told me that her guidance counselor in high school suggested that she should forget about college and go to vocational school instead. Thank goodness she didn't take his advice. Not only did she go to college and vet school, she completed a PhD in pathology and later became board certified in another specialty. My colleague had gumption! One of the traits that I admire most is gumption. Gumption is what makes you ignore those that say you can't do something when you know in your heart that you can. Gumption makes us strive harder and push forward when we are faced with challenges. In this issue we introduce you to another friend of mine who has a lot of gumption, Dr. Lillie Davis. Growing up in poverty, she was often told that she wasn't good enough. Despite having limited resources, Dr. Lillie's courage and resolve helped her overcome her circumstances and rise to become the success she is today. In this issue of Vet Candy Magazine, it is all about the eyes! As veterinarians, we often faced with some really horrible eye cases, like that inevitable Shih Tzu with an eye prolapse or that bulldog with the nasty melting corneal ulcer. Years ago, the only option for severe cases was enucleation. Now, with the increasing number of specialists, we have an option to refer these cases to specialists who can likely save the eyes. Thank goodness! According to AVMA 2018 data, there are 453 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists. Our favorite one is Ohio veterinarian, Dr. DJ Haeussler, who graces our cover this month. Helping veterinarians save eyes is why Vet Candy partnered up with Dr. DJ and Sentrx Animal Care to create a master course in ophthalmology. This free program is RACE and New York State approved for CE and focuses on reinforcing the essential fundamentals of eye care. Whether you are a recent graduate or want to upgrade your skills, this free course if for you! Check it out at myvetcandy.com/eye

In this issue of Vet Candy Magazine, we are focusing on the customer experience. A positive customer experience promotes loyalty, helps you retain customers, and encourages brand advocacy. It is important to provide a remarkable experience and make them want to continue doing business with you — customers are your best resource for growing your brand awareness. We are also introducing you to a man who's on a mission to make the customer experience amazing at veterinary clinics. Alexandre Contreras VT, C.C.M.T, Inventor, knows first hand that one of the worst veterinary experiences that can happen to a pet is having a nail cut too short and bleed during a nail trim. Not only is the pet upset, the pet owner is as well. That's why he created a cool new nail clipping tool that keeps that from happening. This program is brought to you by Merck Animal Health, makers of Nobivac vaccines.
Welcome to this issue of Vet Candy Magazine, where we are talking all about the eyes. Patients are brought to us for a variety of reasons, and according to Healthy Paws Pet Insurance, the eyes are one of the most common. Healthy Paws evaluated nearly 800,000 customer claims filed from January 1 to December 31, 2019 and identified the top ten accidents and illnesses for both cats and dogs. Eye conditions topped the list of both species. For this issue, we are highlighting Dr. DJ Haeussler, a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist and owner of the Animal Eye Institute. You may recognize Dr. DJ if you follow his social media profile, where he posts incredibly graphic images of ocular disease. If you aren't following him, you definitely should, because it is a learning experience! Dr. DJ is also teaming up with Vet Candy and Sentrx Animal Care to bring you a free master's course in ophthalmology. Whether you are new to the field or you want to brush up on your skills, this course is for you. Check out myvetcandy.com/eye to sign up for free!
