VYS0024 | Between Being Real and Not Real - Vayse to Face with Nathan Paul Isaac - Show Notes Barely able to contain their excitement, Hine and Buckley welcome to Vayse the one and only Nathan Paul Isaac, creator of the essential chronicle of high strangeness in Somerset, Kentucky, the Penny Royal podcast. Penny Royal has been a huge influence on Vayse, and Hine and Buckley geek out as the conversation goes deep, wide and weird - from discussion of Penny-Royal-favourite topics such as cybernetics and synchronicity to pondering Hansen's trickster and theories on the nature of elementals and non-human intelligence by way of terrifying stories of faceless dream entities and a firm consensus on the importance of maintaining a healthy hatred of Nazis... and to sweeten the deal even more, Nathan drops a few breadcrumbs as to what kind of weird stuff to expect from Penny Royal season 3... Recorded 6 July 2023 Thanks again to Keith for the show notes - again, we couldn't have have got this episode out on time without his help. We appreciate it! Welcome to Feedback with EarBuds, the podcast recommendation podcast. Our newsletter brings you five podcast recommendations each week according to a theme, and curated by a different person. Our podcast is an audio version of the newsletter. Subscribe to the newsletter here: http://eepurl.com/cIcBuH This week's theme is Hopepunk Audio Dramas. The curator is Tal Minear, a podcast producer at Realm Media. Why did Tal choose this theme? "Hopepunk is a word that means a lot of things, but to me, hopepunk shows are about making the best of the worst. The dark sides of a collapsing society, the denial in modern American idealism, what's the definition of hard work? Also Caroline Dennett a senior safety consultant at Shell quit via email to 1400 employees over the “extreme harms” Shell is doing to the planet, & a stupid Vox article titled "Stop telling kids climate change will destroy their world". The dark sides of a collapsing society, the denial in modern American idealism, & what's the definition of hard work? - Gas prices, wages, inflation, guns... My favorite bit of the zeitgeist we're living in right now is the people who claim that covid-19, monkeypox, etc are "fake diseases" invented to "control us." People, you willingly go to work for 40+ hours a week to produce for the super rich, and you spend the rest of your time willingly consuming for them, all to make them have a better monetary high score and to get richer. You imply that people who don't engage in the same lifestyle of production and consumption that you do have something wrong with them. Why would the ruling class need a fake disease to keep you under control when you're doing a perfectly fine job on your own? Caroline Dennett A senior safety consultant at Shell quit via email to 1400 employees over the “extreme harms” Shell is doing to the planet - source "I can no longer work for a company that ignores all the alarms and dismisses the risks of climate change and ecological collapse. Because, contrary to Shell's public expressions around Net Zero, they are not winding down on oil and gas, but planning to explore and extract much more. I want Shell Execs and Management to look in the mirror and ask themselves if they really believe their vision for more oil & gas extraction secures a safe future for humanity." - Caroline Dennett Vox article "Stop telling kids climate change will destroy their world" - source "Our economic growth will save us!" is the most B.S. take I've seen so far. What's gonna happen when that very economy comprehensively collapses. Adults are just projecting their own terror and inability to cope onto the kids. As far as I can tell, kids want the whole truth. The ugly, nasty truth. They want to know what they are facing. This episode is sponsored by Joe Ugly Apparel - www.JoeUglyApparel.com Stylish, bold, & modern apparel. For the rare misfit. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Stop scolding people for worrying about monkeypox (Vox article), published by Lizka on May 31, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I quite liked this recent article from Kelsey Piper. (Note: I'm link-posting this because I think link-posting can be useful.) A few excerpts from the article: There are some solid epidemiological reasons to conclude that monkeypox doesn't pose the same threat to the world that Covid-19 did in 2020. But instead of condemning alarmism, experts should acknowledge the many reasons for that alarm. The world is horribly vulnerable to the next pandemic, we know it will hit at some point, and the undetected spread of monkeypox around the world until there were dozens of cases in non-endemic countries — despite the fact it typically has low transmissibility — shows how profoundly we've failed to learn the lessons from Covid-19 we need to avoid a catastrophic repeat. Many of the biggest missteps of the last few years have happened when our public health and communications institutions have tried to manage public reactions to what they have to say: from Fauci saying that he dismissed mask-wearing early on in the pandemic out of fears of causing mass panic, to worries that endorsing booster shots (even as the evidence grew they were needed) would make the vaccines look bad, to the FDA's earlier seeming reluctance to authorize vaccines for children under age 5, despite data justifying it, out of concerns that authorizing Pfizer and Moderna at different times would confuse the public. In general, I'd like to see public health officials step back entirely from trying to manage our feelings about outbreaks. Don't tell us to worry or not to worry, or not to worry yet. Don't tell us to worry about something else instead. Tell us what measures are being taken to contain the monkeypox outbreak, and prevent the next monkeypox outbreak, and prevent the next outbreak of something much, much worse than monkeypox. By all means, explain the reasons to think monkeypox is likely not very transmissible; that's important information you have relevant expertise on, unlike trying to manage the public's feelings. Once you have the accurate facts about monkeypox — and about the risk of pandemics generally — whether you're worried by those facts isn't really a question for the CDC. Thanks for listening. This is the first podcast of our fashion industry sustainability topic. In this episode, we're feeling a little frustrated. We've been talking about, learning, and working within the sustainability sector for a while. And the issues within the fashion industry are inescapable! Especially right now, it seems like everywhere we turn there's a new finding or data point or study talking about the impact of the fashion industry on our planet. But actually - it turns out that a lot of those sound bites are from out-of-context sources. And it is very hard to find real, clear data around the fashion industry and the impact it has. This is partially due to the intentionally opaque nature of the industry, the massive scale on which fashion is produced, and how intertwined this industry is with a lot of the other polluters on the planet. Throughout the conversation, we decided that for this topic, we want to break down the supply chain and dive into each part of the fashion industry to understand it better! Here are some resources we turned up as we were searching: The Vox Article we mention in the episode: https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2020/1/27/21080107/fashion-environment-facts-statistics-impact Here's some info about the mushy and intermixxed the fashion industry is: https://ecocult.com/now-know-fashion-5th-polluting-industry-equal-livestock/ The Geneva network offers stats from well known sources like INEP, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, UNCTAD, and the WTO. Are those stats real? Hard to tell, but here's the article for you to read what we know so far: https://www.genevaenvironmentnetwork.org/resources/updates/sustainable-fashion/
Lisa and her guest Scheffie Lindquist have a compelling discussion about The Goldfinch. The Goldfinch is a Pulitzer winner and delves into the life of Theo Decker, whose mom was killed in a tragic accident. He's shuffled around and first lands at a family friend's house in New York and then later is taken to Las Vegas. But no matter where he is – he is desperately missing his mom. Lisa and Scheffie talk about the beautiful writing and meandering plot. Spoilers are discussed. Here are books mentioned in the podcast: Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy ChevalierThe Catcher in the Rye by J.D. SalingerAt the end of each show, the narrative is flipped, and Lisa or her guest discuss books they've enjoyed in, “Everyone Hated It But Me.” Everyone Hated It But Me Books: Circe by Madeline MillerWorld of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks and Other Astonishments by Aimee NezhukumatathilHere are some links to articles that Lisa and her guest discussed: The New Yorker in its review described the book as similar to children's literature. A Vox Article says the book was flawed and that is one reason the movie was panned. A New York Times Book Review describes the book as a “glorious Dickensian novel.” For more information, find Lisa on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and her website. *The book titles mentioned include affiliate links. On this episode of Categorical Imperatives we discuss the importance of Federalism as a mainstay of our government's checks and balances. Why calls for electoral reform from particular political party every election cycle because they are just sore losers, is more than selfish. Why it is a short-sighted grasp for power that they demand without considering any of the consequences of the changes they propose or the merits of the structure they want to destroy. We will be going over and article from Vox.com about why they say they think the Senate should have proportional representation. Why they are no good liars who are really just pushing for a scheme of national government that would do far more than what they claim they want, which is "a better balance of power between the states and the people". They want to do away with States entirely. replace our legislature with a single national legislature that would be nothing more than a rubber stamp for the President's wishes. Why this Wilsonian impulse is an eminently dangerous impulse and why we should cherish the Madisonian Republic we have. Solo episodes return with this followup episode to Identity Crisis & Sense of Self (released on Feb 25, 2021). I dive into why community & belonging are not only things we strive for, but actual human NEEDS (according to research by Dr. Brene Brown and others) and why it's so damn painful when we lose our communities through the process of leaving a religion, getting divorced, or going through a global pandemic. Can/should the communities we had in our former faiths be replaced? How do we find belonging within ourselves? Can we have a community without belonging? I dive into all these questions and more in this episode! 4/9/2021 - In this episode, we look at the narrative around the Derek Chauvin trial now that we're a couple weeks in. We talk about the corporate press' framing of the prosecution and the likely situation where Chauvin could be acquitted. We also talk about the potential fallout of any outcome that doesn't convict Chauvin and what agendas will likely benefit from more protests/riots. We also go through a piece on Vox that talks about Floyd's drug use and weirdly omits that Floyd was saying he couldn't breathe well before he had a knee on his neck. This episode isn't a defense of Derek Chauvin; it's more an admission that he will not be guilty in our court system and thinking out loud about the narrative the corporate press is shaping. Episode 13 - In this New Years Eve episode, we reflect on 2020 and look ahead to 2021. We also discuss a Vox article called The End of Productivity discussing how the pandemic has impacted people's jobs, and caused them to rethink the way they approach work and the value they place on it in their lives. The revelation of how unsatisfying the work-obsessed life really is caused them to be open to changing how they live. We share some audio from one of Dr. Gabor Mate's latest YouTube interviews from Dec 11, 2020, in which he gives a great picture of how culture causes individual sickness, disease and toxicity. Lastly we discuss some of Erich Fromm's most impactful quotes about what life is all about, and what we think about them. The political process is complex and difficult to follow, no matter how deeply we care about climate policy. And yet, without federal clean electricity standards, energy companies are unlikely to change their behavior. So, what does good environmental policy look like? And what can we do as individuals to advocate for laws that reverse climate change? Dr. Leah C. Stokes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at UC Santa Barbara and the author of Short Circuiting Policy: Interest Groups and the Battle Over Clean Energy and Climate Policy in the American States. Today, Leah joins Ross to discuss what makes for good environmental policy and why we need federal clean electricity standards. She weighs in on how public utilities abuse the political system, introducing us to the idea of intervener compensation programs as the most promising way to advocate for the public interest. Leah goes on to share her criticism of Planet of the Humans, describing the film’s failure to address the nuances of life cycle analysis or the fossil fuel industry’s role in the climate crisis and explaining how the film’s thesis is out of alignment with the Michael Moore’s supposed progressive politics. Listen in as Leah shares a case study of climate policy in the state of Ohio and learn what you can do to let lawmakers know that you care about climate change. Welcome to Episode 41 of Nooks and Crannies! Zombie Movies: Racialized Others and Why they justifiably want to Eat our Brains! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (Originally Recorded at the end of Feb; we somehow did not mention the “Corona Virus” in relation to Zombies, speaks to how quickly things changed eh? Glad we did not make these comparisons actually…) Be well friends, hope we can provide a nice break from reality with this bad boi! This film defiantly reinforced the racialized tropes associated with Zombies (i.e. The Primative Dangerous Other, whom need to be contained and controlled) as does gendered tropes (women need saving), while at the same time being a masterpiece from Lugosi, the grandpappy of Horror…1/5 Stars Next up is the 50’s Atomic Aged Zombies, especially the strip: Corpses, Coast to Coast! (http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/2008/01/corpses-coast-to-coast.html) – Ya, I screwed up the title in the recording! A atomic aged comic that was pre “code” era, which means its pretty gory and great. It also is a pure embodiment of the political and international relational fears and anxieties of the dawn of the Cold War. We finish up this portion with the justifiably famous and groundbreaking: Night of the Living Dead (date). This is a surprisingly political movie, as are most Zombie films, but it was fascinating to see the emphasis put on Civil Rights Era racial politics, including the famous final scene..Linked right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpPyXhRoBgo And end this round on a discussion of the sequel: Dawn of the Dead (date): https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077402/ Next Up: I think Musical Marinades! Today Dennis and Joel discuss the Kodi Media Center. They cover what Kodi is, what it does, and how you can use Kodi to cut the cord. This episode covers all the nuances of Kodi and how it is vastly different from a streaming service, and isn't itself a streaming device. Kodi is at it's core is media center software that can aggregate all your content through one interface. Dennis and Joel also go fairly deep into the subject of piracy and how it is hurting Kodi's image. Concerns are also discussed on how you could be pirating movies and TV and not even know it. An official install of Kodi is 100% legal. It’s essentially an extremely robust media player. Kodi, by itself, comes with no video content. That is up to the user to supply. That is also where the legal grey area begins. Here is the link on Grounded Reason Dennis mentions in the episode: What is Kodi and is it Legal? To explore Kodi yourself, check out this fantastic quick start guide on Kodi's website. If interested, you can check out this other guide on Kodi's website on how to use Kodi in a DIY DVR setup. As promised: The Vox Article on the Neural Network that Watched Blade Runner I also want to say that the bit at the end is completely an homage to our favorite podcast.
