667: The Future of Faith in America with John Kasich

The Holy Post

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 87:18

A slate of new articles analyzes Pope Francis through America's progressive-conservative polarization, but are they confusing political categories with theological ones? Surprising data show that Gen Z is returning to religion, and belief in an afterlife is on the rise, but what's the explanation? Are young people returning to the church to rebel against their secular parents? Former Ohio Governor John Kasich believes America is on the cusp of a spiritual revival, and his new book, “Heaven Help Us,” explores how religious institutions are leading the way. He talks to Skye about how God used tragedy to awaken his own faith, and why he thinks this present era of greed and cowardice will pass. Also this week—a bunny, a Boeing, and a Bible illustration.   Holy Post Plus: Ad-Free Version of this Episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/127757278/   0:00 - Show Starts   2:40 - Theme Song   3:00 - Sponsor - BetterHelp - This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Send us a textToday is a bonus episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast I shall name, Author Spotlight. Think of it as an offshoot of the Cops and Writers Podcast, with more of an emphasis on giving writers actionable help with the authorly side of things. Not a bunch of fluff or theories. Concrete things that will help you build your author career. Think of this as an experiment, for now.I am not abandoning the Cop side of Cops and Writers! I will continue to bring you the best police or criminal guests to entertain, compel, and inspire you. For today's episode, I brought in a friend of the show and a publishing heavy hitter, Bryan Cohen. Bryan Cohen runs Best Page Forward, a company that helps authors to learn, profit, sustain, and scale their author careers. He's helped over 30,000 authors through his Ad Challenges and his Sell More Books Show Podcast has run every week for over a decade. Bryan's Author Ad Agency manages ads for authors selling millions of dollars in book sales per year.Bryan knows his stuff and has helped me throughout my writing career! Please enjoy my chat with the most awesome, Bryan Cohen! In today's episode we discuss:.·      How much of the experience of doing standup comedy at a young age helped you later on in life? · Real-world experience! Many authors don't have it. How do you overcome that?·      Bryan's book, “How to Write a Sizzling Synopsis.”·      What are the most common errors you see in book descriptions and how do we get better at writing them? What are the “must have's” in a book description?·      Will AI take over your best page forward blurb writing business? Or will you use it to help your business?·      The Sell More Books Show Podcast. I have been a long time listener and it was super helpful when I was new to the biz. Long time with Jim, some time with Claire, and now the rotating hosts and cut down on the length of the show. What is the future of the show? Why get rid of Patreon?·      How do we grow sustainable author practices? It can be a grind, but there is no silver bullet. Every profitable author I know has worked their butts off, especially the first few years and built up a big catalogue. There is no getting around that. I think it comes down to your own definition of success and what you want out of writing. ·      Speaking of success, how are you helping authors build a six-figure business in publishing? Things authors are doing right, and not so right.·      Author ad challenge. What is it and how does it help?·      What are some best marketing practices for fiction/nonfiction/memoirs?  ·      A.I., the cows are out of the barn! Where do you see it going and as authors, how do we use it to help our author careers? The Atlantic Article regarding Meta taking author's work and training their AI with it.Visit Bryan over at Best Page Forward! Check out the new Cops and Writers YouTube channel!Check out my newest book, The Good Collar (Michael Quinn Vigilante Justice Series Book 1)!What would you do if you lost the one you loved the most? Eric and Eliot debate the latter's Atlantic article arguing that a second Trump term might not be that catastrophic on foreign policy. They discuss why people shouldn't catastrophize the possible outcomes, the traditional continuity between Administrations on foreign policy despite overheated partisan campaign rhetoric and the inextricable links between domestic and foreign policy. They discuss potential dire outcomes for Ukraine (and Taiwan), the impact on NATO, possible "adults in the room" in a second term, JD Vance and Don Trump Jr.'s possible roles as gatekeepers and personnel gurus, and Trump's moment of grace after the assasination attempt. They look back on earlier episodes of violence and conspiracy mongering in American history in the 1960s and 1840s and 1850s. Finally, they discuss Kamala Harris's chances against Trump and the likely contours of foreign policy in a Harris Administration. It's become common to appeal to our evolutionary past to justify present ideologies. In this episode we are honing in on a vegan account of human diet and contrasting it with a less ideologically motivated piece published by The Atlantic. There's a few interesting discoveries to be had. For one it's always interesting to see how subtle warpings of facts can lead to very different perspectives. It's also interesting to contemplate what such work tells us about the worldview of the writer. It's also interesting to see how evolutionary arguments are misused in the name of an agenda. All of this comes into play with this PETA article on veganism but there's a mirror of this sort of ideological work going on among the Carnivore and Paleo subcultures online. ____________________

Join us for this special festive episode in which we initiate the fledgling Gurologist (and occasional journalist and author) Helen Lewis into the deeper and more esoteric levels of Gurology. Helen may have produced an excellent new multi-part series on the New Gurus for the BBC but just how many nut or shark-based anecdotes can you fit into a 30-minute episode? And is the BBC really ready for truly hardcore sensemaking? In any case, we indulge our new padawan with an extended discussion about the new series (it's actually very, very good!) and what she has learned on her travels. Along the way we compare notes, discuss the ethics of covering narcissists and harmful gurus, and uncover Helen's personal role in creating one prominent modern guru. But that's not all! Befitting the season, Helen comes bearing a gift... or is it a test? Unveiling her inner Quizmaster persona she attempts to humble the masters with an End of Year Guru quiz. Can Matt & Chris survive? Who between them is the true Gurologist (& who conversely is winning at life)? Join us and find out!P.S. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Atlantic article on effective Ukraine aid, published by iporophiry on April 5, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is an article from the Atlantic from a few days ago. The writer takes on an EA lens, and seems to understand it well. Includes an interview with Pablo Melchor, co-founder and president of Ayuda Efectiva (in Spain). I'd recommend it, and it seems like a good thing to send to non-EA friends. Some excerpts: When I asked Pablo Melchor, the president of an effective-altruism nonprofit in Spain called Ayuda Efectiva, if he'd altered his usual giving in response to the war, he said he hadn't. “This has nothing to do with how much I care (a lot!) but rather with how much I think my donation could achieve,” he wrote to me in an email. “I know the Ukrainian crisis is going to receive a huge amount of resources and any additional amounts will make a much greater difference in now forgotten tragedies,” such as the hundreds of thousands of children who die from malaria each year. This is not to pit one tragedy against another, but just to note that the donations a cause receives are strongly dictated by media coverage. An effective altruist might also try to identify less publicized effects of the war itself. For instance, Chris Szulc, a member of Effective Altruism Poland, told me that he was interested in finding ways to provide Ukrainian refugees with mental-health services. Still other donors might take a bigger-picture perspective and fund initiatives that aim to reduce the risk of nuclear war and of large-scale conflicts. But say you want to do something to try to help Ukrainians in this moment. What's the best thing to do? For starters, donate your money and time, not physical stuff. “It's better to send money to trusted organizations, because they can buy blankets or coats or whatever is needed at much cheaper prices,” Melinda Haring, the deputy director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center, told me. “They can get a brand-new coat for less than it costs for you to ship the coat to Ukraine.” And (For additional ideas, you could check out suggestions from Effective Altruism Poland and from Vox's Kelsey Piper, who highlights, among other organizations, independent Russian media outlets.) Karin is joined by Emma Burnell to discuss the recent Atlantic Article exploring Trump's contempt for those who serve in uniform (why does he keep calling them "losers"?), Biden's steadily strong poll number nationally as well as the state by state perspective (whisper it, but increasingly Biden looks like a winner), and the Democrats' exceptionally strong fundraising in August ($384Million dollars!?). The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

Shared Traumatic Experiences Curt and Katie chat about the potential that clients will take care of us because we’re all going through the global pandemic. We look at the humanization and boundary shifts that can happen. We also talk about how to handle the nuance of the changes in the therapeutic relationship to help sustain stronger clinical efficacy. It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. In this episode we talk about: How clients may become more aware of their therapist’s own challenges due to the pandemic Clients testing to see if we have capacity to manage what is happening AND their issues as well The reality of the additional disclosure that is happening with telehealth How we’re managing the conversations about the human experience, the unique situations we’re facing, and our clients’ concerns The disinhibition effect for both clients and therapists via telehealth Discussions about availability and flexibility with clients Research on Shared Traumatic Experiences Boundary shifts that need to be discussed How to handle the shifts in the relationship with nuance The need for therapists to take care of themselves – more deliberately and differently than we might have done prior to the pandemic The added stressors that are being put on therapists that our clients are likely aware of The importance of not pathologizing our clients wanting to take care of us during this time The positives for telehealth and some of the boundary shifts The importance of community for therapists right now Acknowledging that therapists who have stayed in the office require support as well Risk factors for therapists who wear different hats and have different projects Resources mentioned: We’ve pulled together resources mentioned in this episode and put together some handy-dandy links.
