Christopher reminisces about his childhood in North Carolina when the night sky was filled with stars, but laments the increasing light pollution and the light domes over cities at night. The hosts share their own memories of seeing the Milky Way with less light pollution.   Christopher introduces the Bortle scale, which measures light pollution from 1 to 9, rating Charlotte as an 8 or 9 and Matthews as a 7. They discuss an Audubon initiative aimed at reducing city lights during bird migration.   Christopher also shares his experiences photographing the northern lights in Virginia and the Milky Way on the coast, noting the challenges of capturing faint nebulae and star clusters. The conversation touches on how light pollution affects animals like sea turtles, migratory birds, and dung beetles, which use stars for navigation.   To help reduce light pollution, Christopher offers practical tips such as using motion sensors, shielding lights, and opting for warmer colored lights. The hosts and Christopher emphasize the importance of preserving dark skies and share fond memories of clearer night skies from their childhoods.   Christopher also provides information on how to access his astrophotography online and offers astronomy resources. Before concluding, he extends his photography services to listeners.   Tune in to learn more about the significance of dark skies and how we can all contribute to reducing light pollution.   If you have ideas for topics that you'd like us to pursue, send us a message either on our Facebook page or our website. Honored with the Best of the Weeklies podcast award by the readers of the Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly, we bring you engaging and educational content each week.   In this episode, your hosts, Debbie and Laurie delve into the crucial topic of ticks and tick-borne illnesses. Beginning with personal observations from their own backyards, such as baby bluebirds in a birdbath, they transition to explaining that the idea for this episode came from a listener in Florida.   Ticks, parasitic arachnids related to spiders and mites, thrive in humid, warm climates and wooded areas. They use body heat, breath, motion, and scent to locate hosts to bite and drink blood from. With tick-borne illnesses on the rise, including potentially life-threatening diseases like Lyme disease, awareness is more important than ever.   Debbie and Laurie discuss common ticks found in the US, such as the deer tick and lone star tick, and the illnesses they can transmit. They provide essential tips for protecting yourself: wearing light clothing, using repellent carefully, tucking pants into socks, showering after being outdoors, putting clothes in the dryer to kill ticks, and performing thorough tick checks. Proper tick removal with tweezers and saving the tick in case of later illness is also highlighted. Seeking medical care promptly if symptoms develop is crucial.   Overall, this episode provides an overview of ticks as a public health issue, prevention strategies, and steps to take if you find a tick, aiming to educate and protect listeners.     If you have ideas for topics that you'd like us to pursue, send us a message either on our Facebook page or our website. Welcome to The Backyard Naturalists, the captivating podcast that delves into the wonders of nature! Broadcasting across 115 countries, all 50 states, and throughout the picturesque Carolinas, our show has garnered acclaim, including the prestigious Best of the Weeklies award from the readers of the Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly.   In this episode, we're joined by the remarkable Lenny Starr, a seasoned natural resources supervisor at Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec. Lenny wears another hat too: he's a Central Carolina's Master Naturalist. His and Debbie's paths intertwined years ago when they were part of the inaugural graduating class.   Cicadas, those enigmatic insects, take center stage today. Their appearance is anything but ordinary—large, chunky, and with a distinct short body. But it's their song that truly captivates. Imagine describing a cicada to someone who's never encountered one—their buzzing, their rhythmic chorus. These creatures span the globe, their presence felt in every corner.   What ignites the collective fascination with cicadas? Lenny's take is simple: “It's fascinating.” Even the periodical cicadas, part of the magical genus known as “Magic Cicada”, evoke wonder. Whether you're a seasoned nature enthusiast or a casual observer, cicadas demand attention.   And here's the twist: 2024 is a special year. We're witnessing the simultaneous emergence of two distinct broods of periodical cicadas. These remarkable insects are exclusive to the eastern and central United States, nowhere else on Earth. Researchers are on the edge of their seats, eager to witness the unfolding drama.   So, dear listeners, whether you're sipping coffee in Charlotte, hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains, or strolling along the Carolina coast, join us as we explore the secret lives of cicadas. It's a symphony of wings, a tale of survival, and a reminder that nature's wonders are always in concert.   Connect with the Backyard Naturalists on the Web, Facebook and Instagram.   Please visit and support our presenting sponsor, Backyard Birds at http://www.thebirdfoodstore.com/. It's the end of an era here, the end of our weeklies, we've consistently produced over the past two years for podcast platforms and for KWNK. We've interviewed people struggling on the streets and volunteers who do good to help them out, as well as movers and shakers, artists and illuminaries of our community, radical thinkers, doers and promoters. As we've gone independent, we no longer have the reporter bandwidth to be able to produce one episode every week. Going forward we will have occasional episodes. We are thinking of new types of interviews such as reporter's notebooks with prominent journalists in the community, looking into cold cases or having audio mini documentaries as we once did at our beginnings. Thank you for being faithful listeners and keep us in your subscription as pretty soon a new episode here and there will pop up, not as a regular feature anymore but as an occasional bonus, to inform, to enlighten, to give sounds of our Reno, Our Town Reno, the biggest little streets, still rad, still getting better, growing, but in need of tlc, of vintage, of keeping public spaces public and of helping each other out. We will continue our regular postings on the BiggestLittleStreets Instagram which we are proud to say for a hyperlocal initiative has over 17k followers, on the Our Town Reno Facebook which has over 11k followers, on our Twitter/X, TikTok where one video got over 600 thousand views, on the Our Town Reno threads and Reddit where we need more followers to continue. Hello friends, So the Monthly Music Challenge is well on it's way now, into the second hashtag (#Escape if you weren't aware), and the challenge is coming to a close for the music makers of the Music Weeklies, there has been some excellent submissions to the MMC from that bunch (looking at you Trench Gun), and all you other music makers that need a bit more time, you still have until the 3rd March to submit your songs to the podcast. As for this song, the one that is this little bitesize podcast, Nick and I (Andy) worked out some guitar at the weekend, I then recorded a musical outline (using just 3 guitars), put some drum loops in, wrote the lyric, sung the lyric, released the video to the music weeklies world.  The song is about being ready to escape when things go bad, and getting out together, not leaving anyone behind. For all the crazy in the world, it's not a problem if we can make good our escape. Please like, share and subscribe And send your Escape songs to us before the 3rd of March 2023.
