Last year, in our podcast show “Z Green Party” (Z色派對), we invited Jaguar Jonze, a Taiwanese-Australian rock star, to our show. The interview with Jaguar were in English, which we then adapted for the Mandarin listeners of Ghost Island Media. We have received high praise after we published the episode.   Therefore, for this time, we bring the full and original interview. If you are interested in the Mandarin episode, please check out episode 48, “點燃澳洲音樂產業 #MeToo 的火焰”, from the show “Z Green Party”.   Jaguar is a Taiwanese-Australian rock star, and at the same time, she is also an advocate for mental health and against sexual harassment. Jaguar talked about how her story on letting the public follow on the #MeToo movement in the music industry in Australia, and how she navigated issues including mental health and intergenerational trauma.   Jaguar's life journey is full of twists. Her parents divorced when she was 7 years old. Her father is from Australia and her mother is from Taiwan. However, she could not gain Taiwanese citizenship because the law at that time only provided Taiwanese citizenship to those whose father is a Taiwanese citizen.    She faced sexual harassment when she started her career in the music industry. She was sexually harassed by two producers. When she turned to the justice system for help, she discovered that the “Gag Law” not only silenced the voice of the victims but it also protected the perpetrators.   The twists in her life did not undermine her confidence. She has used music as an outlet to articulate the traumas in her life, and she has ignited the #MeToo movement in the music industry in Australia by gathering the stories from the survivors and publishing anonymous quotes from the victims on social platforms.    Jaguar has talked about her struggles in her life, and she hopes that her stories could make positive changes to the world. 本節目由鬼島之音 Ghost Island Media 製作、出品  主持 - ZUKKIM 張竹芩 & ZOE 李菁琪 企劃、執行 - 葉阿亭剪接、混音 - 小蔡監製 - Emily Y. The debut album by Jaguar Jonze – AKA Brisbane artist Deena Lynch – is called Bunny Mode. The record's title may sound upbeat and playful, but the story behind it is heartbreaking, as it describes the behaviour Deena used as a coping mechanism when she was abused as a child. She is a survivor in the very real sense of the word, having not only made it through her childhood, but as an adult she was sexually assaulted by two music producers. She responded by bravely speaking out, and in doing so became one of the leading voices of Australia's #MeToo movement. Deena's advocacy work has played a big part in Jaguar Jonze's public profile, but so too has her boundless creativity. Jaguar Jonze is just one of Deena's creative outlets, with Spectator Jonze focusing on visual art, and Dusky Jonze on photography. We talk about Bunny Mode as well as Deena's life, her art and her advocacy work in this interview.

In an industry built to protect those in power, and keep voices silent, how do you ensure your advocacy for what is right, doesn't come at the cost of your own identity? Deena Lynch (Jaguar Jonze) is one of Australian music's most powerful voices. In 2019, Jonze was one of the first survivors to speak out about their experience of sexual abuse within the Australian music industry. Her bravery, strength and power encouraged others to do the same, and was the catalyst for a movement that swept through Australian music. Jaguar joins host Luke Darcy from a rainy Brisbane to chat the impact her advocacy had on the industry, how she's handling the pressure of being a leader, and what's next on her creative bucket list. At the end of July, Jack River dropped an open letter calling for more Aussie music airplay at the Olympics. A slew of Aussie artists have backed calls by Jack River for Channel 7 to play Australian music during the network's coverage of the Olympics, as the country's artists continue to endure yet another wave of gig cancellations and postponements due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, restrictions and border closures. “How great would it be if you played all Australian music in your coverage of the Olympics? These are Australian moments, they deserve Australian music,” said Jack River. “And while we're here, how good would it be to hear Aussie music in Coles, Woolies, Aldi, in banks, on hold, in stores and on ads being shown to Australian for the next few months?” she added. “We need you more than ever. We wanna be your soundtrack.” River's call was met with support from artists like Lime Cordiale, Annie Hamilton, B Wise, Vera Blue, Cub Sport and Jaguar Jonze, who wrote, “HELL YES. Our domestic music quota is so low compared to other countries supporting their own artists.” Unveiled Thursday (Aug. 5), Our Soundtrack Our Stories is a cross-industry project which calls on corporations, media and “anyone willing to listen” to soundtrack Australian lives with homegrown music. The indie artist and entrepreneur's words didn't fall on deaf ears. Channel 7, Channel 9, Coles, 7-Eleven and Bank Australia listened and have taken action. Last week, River launched the Our Soundtrack Our Stories campaign, which invites the wider business community and beyond to discover, champion, share, and consume more local music, which, in short time, will generate essential streaming and sales royalties for struggling artists. The gameplan is a simple one. Play more Australian music, more of the time. A factsheet shared by the pool of partners recommends business owners play local music in their stores and business (and, of course, obtain the right license by visiting OneMusic), spin a radio station that champions local artists, and share the campaign social assets. To join the movement, artists are encouraged to work their social accounts, push the assets, tag businesses that should do more (and give a shout-out to the supporters), create and share themed playlists, and get creative. The industry's hardship is brought into sharp focus in a new report from I Lost My Gig, which found artists and professionals had lost $64 million in revenue lost since July 1, with almost the entire sum uninsurable. The real figure is likely significantly higher. To play a part in Our Soundtrack Our Stories, use the hashtag #OurSoundtrackOurStories on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. Social Media | Interview with Jaguar Jonze - Finding Artistry & Independence via Social Media When I came back to Perth for the Summer, I did not in my wildest dreams expect to meet Taiwanese-Australian artist extraordinaire Jaguar Jonze here. But yet here she was, seated in front of me in all her signature leopard print glory. I had met Jaguar aka Deena Lynch the day before at a music mentorship program for West Australian musicians, and given that the previous episode of our Level Up podcast was very much inspired by her amazing social media strategy, the serendipity was too strong to ignore with this one. A self-managed artist who has gone from strength to strength with her uniquely sensual and vulnerable alt-rock sound and striking east-meets-west visuals, Deena is one of few artists who has truly pivoted the pandemic to her advantage in 2020. As she so succinctly puts it, she made COVID her bitch. Becoming Triple J's most-listened artist in 2020, scoring brand deals with the likes of Christian Louboutin and Adobe, and fighting for accountability and change against sexual predators in the Australian music industry, it's mind-boggling to know that Lynch achieved all this after spending 40 days in the hospital battling COVID-19. Yet she is very transparent about social media and digital media's role in her success on the whole, sharing that the brand partnerships she garnered last year were definitely down to the social media presence she's created during this time. We sat down with Deena to pick her brain on her mindset surrounding social media, her relationship with it throughout her career, and the logic behind some of her stellar online content. Also...we are so excited to announce our first ever sponsor for the Level Up podcast - Yunizon Eyewear! Social Media | Artist Case Studies - Jaguar Jonze, Karencici, Joy Crookes We can talk all we want about social media, but what better way to put it in context than with some case studies deep diving into some artists we love? With Instagram as our medium of choice, we've chosen three artists who we  believe embody all the foundations for a healthy and creative social media persona as per talked about in our last episode: Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter Jaguar Jonze, Asian-American singer-songwriter Karencici, and British artist Joy Crookes (of Irish/Indian heritage). We believe that the most important thing is to use social media to empower yourself, and what you hope to express to your listeners. These artists have taken the basic social media format Instagram has provided them with, and merged it with their own creative direction and workstyles to create content that is uniquely and consistently them, creating interesting ways of creating content through the platform in the process. If you're a visual person, don't forget to check out the YouTube verson of this podcast ep we put up with screengrab walkthroughs of the various Instagram posts for full effect! Here are the main takeaways we got from each of the artists' profiles: Jaguar Jonze Great use of colour profiling and textures: Jaguar Jonze loves her bold reds, yellows and orange hues. These are displayed prominently across her feed. She also loves leopard prints (hence the stage name) and even when she's posting day-to-day content, she's often seen sporting leopard prints too!  Awesome reusing of content: Content is precious, and Instagram (as well as most social media) is a primarily visual platform which requires quick and consistent releasing of content to stay relevant. Jaguar is adept at making sure she has lots of visual documentation of all her exploits, from photoshoots to live photos, and uses them frequently to share new information with fans or to engage with them. This is a great mindset to have. Using her own ways to create intimate spaces visually on IG: Jaguar is passionate about voicing her support for women. Last year, she campaigned against sexual harassment and assault by posting resources and events she had personally encountered or heard of on her social media on colourful, bold sticky notes written in her own hand.    Karencici Social Media Native: One look at Karencici's page will show you that she is a millennial social media native through and through. There is just something so organic and natural about the way that she shares content, while building on her brand as an artist and musician. Original use of filters to easily create new content: In instances where Karencici has done challenges or shared demos on her page, she often uses filters to spice up her off-the-cuff videos so that it tells a bigger story both musically and visually than just another video of someone singing into their microphone.  Authentic, consistent, unique engagement methods with fans: As mentioned above, Karencici is the queen of coming up with new and fun ways to engage with her fans using her own voice. From the abovementioned Christmas song challenge to a recent challenge where she recorded a video of her writing a song in under an hour and then releasing the demo on her Instagram, Karen is generous with her talents and songwriting ability, and this allows audiences to be able to take a peep into her world and her prowess as a singer-songwriter without even having to release a single.   Joy Crookes Authentic social media persona: Given her name, it's no surprise that Joy's sweet, passionate and authentic persona shines Hosted on Acast.
