Today we're here to talk with famed Vocalist, Zak Stevens. Zak has been behind the microphone since the early 90s & is best known as Singer of Savatage, Circle II Circle & a member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Stevens and producer / guitar player extraordinaire Aldo Lonobile make up the force behind Archon Angel and this album, aptly named ‘II' is their second album together. Like their first effort, but even more in tune and perfected, ‘II' is an impressive and powerful work of prog metal. On this episode we're here to talk to Zak about his new Project, as well as his back history. Zak Stevens first came to prominence in the metal scene when he was hand-picked by Savatage's Jon Olivia to take over as lead vocalist for the band. Starting with 1993's Edge Of Thorns, he would record four studio albums with the band. He has also performed on multiple Trans-Siberian Orchestra releases, including Christmas Eve and Other Stories, Beethoven's Last Night, and more, while also being a member of the band's touring production. Around 2001, Zak started a band, Circle II Circle, which has recorded seven studio albums, with the most recent being 2015's Reign Of Darkness. Additionally, he has appeared on albums by Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Machines Of Grace, Jon Olivia's Pain, and more. Fue fundado por los hermanos Jon y Criss Oliva en 1979. La banda es reconocida por grabar algunos álbumes conceptuales. Sus orígenes pueden ser atribuidos al heavy metal clásico, influenciados por bandas como Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dio, Black Sabbath y Rush, lo que se puede apreciar claramente en su álbum debut, Sirens. Criss Oliva y su hermano Jon formaron su primera agrupación musical juntos, Avatar, en 1978, luego de la ruptura de sus anteriores bandas Tower y Alien respectivamente. En 1980 el dúo conoció a Steve Wacholz, y comenzaron a ensayar en una cabaña tras la casa de los Oliva, bautizada por la banda como The Pit. Wacholz, que originalmente había audicionado para la anterior banda de Jon, Alien, lo relevó de su posición en la batería. La banda grabó su prólogo a Streets, Edge Of Thorns en 1993, y por primera vez, Savatage comenzó a disfrutar de aclamación popular, recibiendo un incremento en la emisión por radio de sus canciones y una gira mundial que les otorgó una mención internacional como "el mejor Savatage en vivo". Sin embargo la tragedia envolvió a la agrupación cuando Criss Oliva murió a causa de un conductor ebrio el 17 de octubre de 1993. Recorded January 2nd 2020.   Expect Archon Angel to tour Europe (including Greece, France, Germany, etc...) in April 2020.  During our conversation Zak discusses his new band Archon Angel, the importance of branding, the 'punishing' touring schedule with TSO, guitarist Joel Hoekstra (Cher, Whitesnake), the return of Savatage, the future of Archon Angel, 70 000 Tons Of Metal cruise, Aldo Nova, coming in for the recording of the Savatage album Edge Of Thorns & becoming the band's new voice and much more.  Selected quotes from the interview: On surviving TSO's grueling tour schedule: "You have to have a militarized routine. You just get into it and go. It's the wildest thing I've ever seen - the TSO tours. It's a different animal - that's for sure." Archon Angel's press release describes the new Fallen album as having the 'classic Savatage sound', Zak comments: "When we started with the Archon Angel stuff, we didn't think this was Savatage-esque. Even I didn't think it was overwhelmingly like Savatage. The press is hearing stuff... I wonder if that's more like something the person is hearing for themselves and going 'oh yeah, we've been wanting Savatage and this sounds like it.' When, we, the musicians looked at it... It may be here or there, but not like an overwhelming thing. I'd be the first one to say, 'wait a minute I can't... this is just like Savatage. I'm not going to dive right into that. When you come from that history (I come from singing in Savatage), there's bound to be something that is going to remind somebody of that. You really can't get away from it, so don't try to run. It's gonna catch you." The return of Savatage: "Yes, if you talk to the guys in Savatage, they would love to come together. We're just waiting on some decisions from above to see what the next step is." He further added, "All of a sudden, I'm seeing five Savatage songs in the second half of the TSO show and I'm going, 'Hint?' Who knows? I see some building on that side... Al Pitrelli, Johnny Lee Middleton, myself, Chris Cafferty, Jeff Plate, we're all kinda sitting there saying 'hmmm - this is very interesting...'
