Dr. Temi Ajao is a wife, mother of two, board-certified emergency physician, money mindset coach, entrepreneur, and real estate investor. A first-generation Nigerian American, she was raised in the Bronx. She earned her BA in Psychology and Africana Studies from SUNY Binghamton and later her medical degree from the George Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Ajao completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine with a strong interest in pursuing a fellowship in global health. However, burdened with nearly half a million dollars in student loan debt, she decided to pause her fellowship dreams to tackle her financial obligations. She began practicing emergency medicine in a community setting, aiming to pay off her debt, build a nest egg, and eventually return to academia. Unexpectedly, after five years working in a high-acuity environment, Dr. Ajao experienced career burnout. Her financial stress worsened when her employer transitioned from physician-owned to corporate-owned, increasing pressure to meet RVU targets, patient satisfaction scores, and quality metrics—none of which directly improved patient outcomes. Feeling disillusioned and losing passion for the field she once loved, Dr. Ajao decided it was time for a change. She negotiated higher pay with local hospitals, reduced her clinical hours, and pursued a career in locum tenens. Additionally, she began focusing on her money mindset, shifting from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance and success. Drawing on her personal experiences with burnout and financial stress, Dr. Ajao founded the Money Mindset Academy. Through this coaching program, she empowers women physicians to master their relationship with money, helping them double their net worth and regain control of their financial futures. The transition from individual contributor to manager is never easy. New managers need to take responsibility not just for their own performance, but also for that of team. They need to place less emphasis on doing, and much more on the essential skills of leading, influencing and communicating. Core to this is the development of a “leadership mindset”. But what is a leadership mindset? And what steps can managers and their organisations take to better develop the right mindset and perspectives for leadership? To discuss this I am delighted to be joined on the Brain for Business podcast by Professor Bret Crane. Bret Crane is an Associate Professor of Leadership at the Jon. M. Huntsman School of Business and the Executive Director of the Stephen R. Covey Leadership Center at Utah State University. Bret's research focuses on leadership mindsets. As a respected authority and researcher on topics related to leadership, management, and organizational behavior, Bret has published articles across a variety of journals including Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of World Business, Business & Society, and Human Resource Development Review. Before joining the faculty at the Huntsman School of Business, he was a Visiting Professor at the George Washington School of Business in Washington DC. As a consultant, Bret works with organizations to improve their leadership, teams, organizations, and culture. His clients have included American Express, Honda, Lowe's, General Mills, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Biogen, USAA, and others. “A child [patient] makes a mistake, upsets things - one doesn't console or complain, but just reflects whatever the patient's affect was at that moment, such as, ‘that seems to bother you' or ‘it's hard to put those two pieces together'- to just observe it, to not have an affective response of disgust or irritation. The same thing is true if a patient comes in bragging or talking about something that made them very proud - to acknowledge their being proud but to not get all excited. The kind of things that often these children who have a lot of difficulty due to parents' narcissistic investment in them, and we're all narcissistically invested in our kids - they have a lot of trouble knowing what they really feel and what they really want. I think my non-judgmental, either positively judgmental or negatively judgmental attitude, allows them to begin to experience that what they're doing is what they are doing for themselves for some reason, not what they're doing for me or for the witness, that's an enormously important part.” Episode Description: We begin with Judy sharing her professional journey that led her to child analysis. She is active as a psychoanalytic clinician, supervisor, teacher, consultant, writer, and editor. We discuss four key papers of hers that study neutrality, enactments, informative experiences, and the role of attachment. Central to her writing and thinking is her curiosity about the inner lives of her patients, especially as action and interaction provide clues to that latent life. We discuss the analyst's experience of ‘wearing the attributes' that patients need to project onto us and tolerating the often deep discomfort in doing so. We consider how her model of therapeutic action, entailing surprise and changes in perceptual frame, does and doesn't have some similarities to psychedelic-assisted therapy. We close with her sharing her analytic experiences with gender-conflicted boys and her hope for the future of our field. Our Guest: Judith Fingert Chused, MD, is an Emeritus Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the Denver, Cleveland, and Seattle Institutes. She is also a Clinical Professor of Behavioral Sciences and of Pediatrics at the George Washington School of Medicine. She is married for 57 years to a former nursery school and medical school classmate and has seven delightful, mischievous grandchildren. Recommended Readings: Chused, J. F. Dr Knight Timestamps (00:13) Dr. Michael G Knight (01:27) Why are minority women dying? (05:35) lifestyle interventions alone for obesity? (11:10) Obesity medications (15:25) Safety of obesity medications (17:45) Education in weight management (19:45) Lack of insurance coverage A champion for health equity, Dr. Michael G Knight joins Dr. Bola Sogade for part 2 of this series. Dr. Knight is board certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine. He has served on many boards and committees and currently is the founder and president of the Renewing Health Foundation. In the last episode Dr. Sogade describes other titles he possesses such as associate chief quality and population health officer, head of healthcare delivery transformation, medical director of community primary care at GW Medical Faculty Associates, and assistant professor of medicine at George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In this episode these two doctors discuss health inequity in obesity and minority pregnant women. Why are minority women dying during pregnancy? Maternal mortality is health inequity. Dr. Knight explains the root causes of health inequity. The way people receive care, and the way people have access to healthy foods, communities, and environments affect maternal mortality. Obesity and the challenges to receive care for this illness are also discussed in this episode. For a long time, obesity has not been viewed as a chronic illness. Now it is known that lifestyle interventions alone are not enough for all people. There are medical interventions for obesity, but the FDA has been historically slow to adopt the use of obesity medications. Is there a stigma associated with obesity medications? In many cases, these medications are not covered by insurances. At other times, healthcare providers are not prescribing medical treatment due to lack of education surrounding obesity and weight management. Although 45% of adults in the US are candidates for medical treatment of obesity, only 1-2% receive obesity medications. Is it an issue with insurance companies due to the cost of treatment? Dr. Knight explains that the health care industry spends billions of dollars for obesity related health issues. Unfortunately, health care is focused on sick care instead of preventative care. Obesity intervention won't approve until education is increased. Stay tuned for next week's episode to learn more! #maternalmortality #maternalmortalityprevention #obesity #obesitytreatment #weightmanagment #healthequity #healthcare

In 2017 and 2018, anywhere you looked the picture of Michael Avenatti seemed to be there. Michael Avenatti graduated the top of his class from George Washington School of Law and went on to have a meteoric rise as a legal eagle. He earned millions from his legal abilities and was known as a powerhouse in the courtroom. In 2016 Donald Trump was elected President and Avenatti began representing Stormy Daniels, a porn star, claiming that the non-disclosure agreement Daniels signed with Trump for alleged sexual activity should be nullified. He was even considered as a Presidential candidate for the Democrat party to take on Trump. Then, in 2019, it all came crashing down. Avenatti was charged with and convicted of attempted extortion against Nike and was given 30 months in prison. Other criminal actions and lawsuits are pending. When does "effectively representing your client" become "extortion?" Introduction and exit music: Dark Hallway (clean) Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com). Leading a professional association over the past year has been tough. It's like getting all of the work, and not getting any of the fun experiences of traveling to meet people around the world. For the American Association of Law Libraries' President Emily Florio and President-Elect Diane Rodriguez, they've made the most of the situation they found themselves in. (Hat tip to the past-President Michelle Cosby, too!) As Florio and Rodriguez prepare for AALL's second remote annual conference in a row, they are leveraging the experience from last year's remote conference to make this year's experience even better. A longer conference. More individual interactions. A virtual tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And, expanded vendor opportunities. In July, the favel will be passed to the new president, but Florio still looks forward to sticking around for another year as the association and the executive board begins the process of getting back to face-to-face interactions, and an in-person conference in Denver in July of 2022. Elder Care: Past and Future with Joanne Lynn, MD, MA, MS and Carrie Graham, PhD, MGS “There needs to be a community anchor in managing eldercare.”— Joanne Lynn, MD, MS, MA (03:21-03:25) Is it right, ethical, or moral that we have put 1.3 million Americans in solitary confinement for the past six months because of COVID-19? Would we tolerate this for college students? Young adults? Children? Not likely. But we have done this to 1.3 million nursing residents in this country. Why isn’t anyone asking these residents and their families what matters to them? In this week's episode, Dr. Melissa Batchelor welcomes Drs. Joanne Lynn and Carrie Graham as her guests for this week. We will discuss nursing homes and COVID as well as long-term care financing considerations from her fellowship. Part One of ‘Elder Care: Past and Future with Joanne Lynn, MD, MA, MS’ Joanne Lynn, MD, MS, MA, is a 2019-2020 Health and Aging Policy Fellow and is the Director of the Program to Improve Eldercare at Altarum Institute. One of the first hospice physicians in the US and an early developer of palliative care, Dr. Lynn is author of 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and 80 books and chapters on geriatrics, palliative care, and end of life care. She has been a tenured professor at the George Washington School of Medicine and Dartmouth Medical School and has worked in quality improvement for CMS, IHI, and the Washington, DC, Department of Health. She has led the team that has developed the MediCaring Communities reform model for eldercare and is working to generate communities capable of improving the performance of their eldercare arrangements. Other current projects include expansion of PACE to serve elders who are not enrolled in Medicaid and enabling better conditions for paid and unpaid caregivers. You can visit her website at Medicaring.org to read her Issue Briefs and comment on What to Do About Nursing Homes. Carrie Graham, PhD, MGS, a 2018-2019 Health and Aging Policy Fellow, has been working in the field of health policy, gerontology, and evaluation research for 20 years. She holds a doctorate in Medical Sociology from UCSF and a master's degree in Gerontological Studies from the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University. She is currently an Associate Adjunct Professor at the UCSF Institute for Health and Aging and holds a joint faculty appointment at UC Berkeley in the School of Public Health. She is the principal investigator of several studies examining the experiences and choices of seniors and people with disabilities who are transitioning to managed care delivery systems. Most recently, she led a multi-campus evaluation of California's dual financial alignment demonstration. She also evaluates consumer-directed organizations that work to promote aging in the community, called Villages. Dr. Graham specializes in using a participatory evaluation approach that incorporates the perspectives of consumers and stakeholders in all phases of evaluation, from the evaluation design through the interpretation of results. She conducts research with hard to reach populations, including frail seniors, people with disabilities, people with chronic illnesses, and people with no or limited English proficiency. To answer complex policy questions, she often uses mixed methods, incorporating qualitative data from interviews or focus groups, and quantitative survey data. “COVID-19 showed how little policymakers and leaders know about their aging population.” — Carrie Graham, PhD, MGS (08:04-08:11) Since COVID-19 has overwhelmed most of our plans, Dr. Lynn ended up spending a great deal of effort trying to keep reporters and others attuned to what was happening to seriously disabled elders. She was initially trying to improve eldercare financing due to large numbers of older adults who, when they need help, have no resources. Communities need to know how they stand and how they're performing. She's involved in developing data for county-level descriptions of how elder care works across the country. If you think about what happens to a person when they become very disabled in old age, so much depends upon their geographic community. Is there a workforce that can help out when the person needs intimate care? Is there a transportation system? Is there housing that's all on one floor and wheelchair accessible? There is not yet a federal guideline that calls on nursing homes to know what their residents want. If you have ideas of how nursing homes can be improved, you can add your comments to Dr. Lynn’s blog here. (Medicaring.org blog What to Do about Nursing Homes?). You can also check out Dr. Terry Fulmer’s blog here: Nursing Homes in the Time of COVID-19: We Need Urgent Action Now and a Long-Term Strategy You can also check out here Issue Briefs here on Elder Abuse; LTSS Financing; Home Care Workforce Shortage; Housing for the Elderly; and Transportation Challenges in Old Age. Part Two of ‘Elder Care: Past and Future with Joanne Lynn, MD, MA, MS’ It's getting to the point where it is so much more expensive to do nothing than break out and do some of the right things. Before COVID-19, we were already in big trouble with financing eldercare. The large numbers of boomers hit disability; they don't have enough savings. They don't have any insurance. They have relatively small families and are often separated by distance. The best idea is an insurance scheme where the government picks up the costliest long-term patients, and the individual stays responsible for the upfront costs. Forty percent of us who make it to age 80 will have some form of cognitive impairment. Some people will escape it by having something that kills them abruptly. But most people will live with chronic illness, and even substantial disability for at least a while before dying. “The most fundamental thing is to know what the patient wants.” — Joanne Lynn, MD, MS, MA (10:14-10:19) You can't know whether you're going to be the person who has a stroke tomorrow and needs 20 years of around-the-clock supportive services, or whether you're going to be somebody who lives until 86 and dies in her sleep. The hardest part is that no one can predict what you're going to need in the future. Thus, building a system that's reliable enough to trust for 50 years is crucial. We have to get the public to invest in their being, and better ways of dealing with the finances, or we are going to have one heck of a lot of older adults without housing, food, and the very basics. Thank you for joining us for this special series of This is Getting Old. Sponsored by the Health and Aging Policy Fellows program, Capstone Conversations is brought to you by MelissaBPhD, in collaboration with The George Washington University's Center for Aging, Health, and Humanities. About Melissa I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (‘96) and Master of Science in Nursing (‘00) as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) School of Nursing (SON). I truly enjoy working with the complex medical needs of older adults. I worked full-time for five years as FNP in geriatric primary care across many long-term care settings (skilled nursing homes, assisted living, home and office visits) then transitioned into academic nursing in 2005, joining the faculty at UNCW SON as a lecturer. I obtained my PhD in Nursing and a post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing (’11) and then joined the faculty at Duke University School of Nursing as an Assistant Professor. My family moved to northern Virginia in 2015 and led to me joining the faculty at George Washington University (GW) School of Nursing in 2018 as a (tenured) Associate Professor where I am also the Director of the GW Center for Aging, Health and Humanities. All parents want their children to grow up, be independent, and find happiness. Their conventional wisdom says, let me push my child to do well in school, work hard on stuff, and take part in various activities to “find” themselves. Because to a parent, the path to success has a formula “Education + Passion + Excellent Performance = Career” which equals to a life of bliss! And well-meaning parents want their children to find a career and then through that connect to their passion. But what if the formula runs into a glitch? On this episode, guest Clinical Neuropsychologist and co-author of The Self-Driven Child, William Stixrud, Ph.D., discusses effective psychological approaches that are likely help parents reset their “reality”, help teachers adjust their task specific support, and help learners understand and accept that reinventing one's self is a lifelong process.About Dr. William StixrudWilliam R. This episode is from the vault and was first released April 23, 2018. Let’s talk about longevity. Judy Gaman is our guest for today’s episode. Judy is a graduate of the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the School of Professional Studies. She is an age to perfection expert, longevity educator, author, and nationally syndicated radio show host of the Staying Young Show. Judy strives to educate and inspire people. She has four books and is currently working on two more. What is the Staying Young Show? Judy’s show is called “Staying Young” and it started when a radio station called her and said that they're closing. They asked her if she would like to take over the show. She happily accepted the offer. They grew in Dallas and got another offer in North Carolina and now broadcasting in 57 stations. The Staying Young show talks about anything that relates to health or longevity. There are so many things that we do that impact our longevity. On Today’s Show, we discuss: * All things longevity * 6 pillars of retirement * Advice for socialization * Nothing keeps you healthier than service * Getting past the age thing * Even in dark times, you can find a way to turn that around for the good * The healing effect of turning a negative into a positive * Importance of sleep The Thing Judy Learned That Surprised Her About Getting Older: The new science we have behind longevity that we didn’t have even when we started this show. Judy underwent DNA testing at Executive Medicine of Texas. They do executive physical tests. Many people visit them to do tests and stay there for half a day. The patients will be given a map of the findings and information about the tests done. Judy had a best friend who's 104 years old! Judy also talks about a best friend she had who passed away when she was 104 years old. She learned a lot from her. Her friend was filled with incredible information and advice. They met when Judy was working on her book called, “Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise “. She needed resources and then realized why not just ask people who are over 100? Judy looked for people who were over 100 years old and she found her best friend. They spent a lot of time together and would have lunch every Friday. They had a blast! Did you know? Did you know that there are jobs that decrease your longevity? Doctors don't get enough sleep and you need at least 8 hours of sleep per day. Construction workers have a very physical job and are out in the sun all day. This can increase the chances of skin cancer. And, sports players have really low longevity because of sports-related injuries. I really enjoyed my conversation with Peter. First, I want to acknowledge that this is a sponsored interview, and we’re grateful to Verizon for their support of Beyond the Uniform, as well as how they have hired over 11,000 Veterans and thousands of military spouses. However, there’s only about six minutes of this interview that are directly about Verizon in a way that may be seen as sales-e. Peter is such a fantastic speaker and storyteller. Immediately after our interview, I set up a call with Peter to chat more, because he is a great guy and has a really valuable perspective on career transitions. One of the aspects I love about our conversation is how Peter took one small aspect of his military service - how much he loved land navigation in the Marine Corps - and how he used this in his search for his next job… which happens to be in commercial real estate as a lawyer. Not a direct connection many would make, and yet it shows how Veterans can find tangential career paths based on smaller aspects they enjoyed while in the military. I also appreciated Peter’s outlook on life - the mere fact that he has his title as “Happy Lawyer” sends a message to everyone he meets and, more importantly, send a strong message to himself about who he wants to be on a daily basis… even on those days where he may not FEEL like a Happy Lawyer. This interview is also a great example of the wide variety of career positions to be found at large companies. For example, with Verizon, many listeners most likely immediately think of phones, or connectivity. But I didn’t think immediately about all the stores, warehouses, and office buildings they have… all that real estate… real estate that needs a strong legal team to obtain and oversee. It’s illustrative of the many potential career aspects below the surface that listeners may not immediately be aware of. About Peter: Peter Vanderloo is a Happy Lawyer at Verizon, where he has worked for over 18 years. In his current role, he works as a Commercial Real Estate lawyer creating value for internal and external customers from Verizon's amazing, extensive real estate portfolio. He started out in the Marine Corps, where he served for 10 years, most recently as a Company Commanding Officer, where he led an 150 member Light Armored Vehicle company. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Delaware, a JD from the George Washington School of Law, and an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business.

Listen NowThis past week public comments were due in response to a CMS Request for Proposal (RFI) that would potentially lead to the agency fielding a Medicare a direct primary care (DPC) demonstration. The demo would pay Medicare physicians directly a predetermined fixed per-beneficiary-per-month fee to provide primary care services to participating beneficiaries. The demo would try to replicate private, commercial DPC contracts physicians have with individuals or through self-insured employers. During this 27 minute conversation Ms. McDermott discusses, in part, both the potential positives and pitfalls should CMS field a DPC demonstration, whether the model would qualify as an Alternative Payment Model (APM) and whether fielding a DPC model would move the Medicare program closer to premium support.Ms. Mara McDermott is currently Vice President at McDermott + Consulting, a subsidiary of the DC-based law firm McDermott Will and Emory. Let’s talk about longevity Judy Gaman is our guest for today’s episode. Judy is a graduate of the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the School of Professional Studies. She is an age to perfection expert, longevity educator, author and nationally syndicated radio show host of the Staying Young Show. Judy strives to educate and inspire people. She has four books and is currently working on two more. What is the Staying Young Show? Judy show is called “Staying Young” and it started when a radio station called her and said that they're closing. They asked her if she would like to take over the show. She happily accepted the offer. They grew in Dallas and got another offer in North Carolina and now broadcasting in 57 stations. The Staying Young show talks about anything that relates to health or longevity. There are so many things that we do that impact our longevity. On Today’s Show we discuss: * All things longevity * 6 pillars of retirement * Advice for socialization * Nothing keeps you healthier than service * Getting past the age thing * Even in dark times, you can find a way to turn that around for the good * The healing effect of turning a negative into a positive * Importance of sleep The Thing Judy Learned That Surprised Her About Getting Older: The new science we have behind longevity that we didn’t have even when we started this show. Judy underwent DNA testing at Executive Medicine of Texas. They do executive physical tests. Many people visit them to do tests and stay there for half day. Did you know that there are jobs that decreases your longevity? Doctors don't get enough sleep and you need at least 8 hours of sleep per day. Construction workers have a very physical job and are out in the sun all day. This can increase the chances of skin cancer. And, sports players have really low longevity because of sports-related injuries. We are beyond excited to bring Dr. Neal Barnard to the YT community. The author of more than 70 scientific publications and 18 books, Dr. Barnard is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, clinical researcher, adjunct professor of medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and New York Time Best selling author. He is one of the most esteemed advocates for health and nutrition, education for medical students, preventative care and higher standards in research. He hosts continuing education conferences for health care providers each year in addition to the extensive e-learning opportunities for physicians through PCRM’s website. In January 2016, the Barnard Medical Center, a non-profit center with a staff of doctor’s, nurses and dietitians dedicated to providing complete primary care by integrating nutrition and medicine, opened its doors. Putting research to work, the Barnard Medical Center is focused on showing the medical industry that a new approach to health through preventative medicine and nutrition can help treat and reverse leading chronic conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, migraine headaches, arthritis and obesity. Dr. Barnard is a much sought after nutrition and research expert having hosted a series of PBS television programs, been featured in several nutrition based documentaries as well as national news programs and publications. He and his team at PCRM are leading the charge on increasing awareness and scientific evidence on the far reaching benefits of a plant-based diet on our health. Dr. Barnard grew up in Fargo, North Dakota eating roast beef, baked potatoes and corn. A diet he now refers to as a diet of deprivation whereas a plant-based diet provides endless options with many cultural influences. He is convinced that it is time to stop questioning the benefits of adopting a whole foods plant-based diet as its been shown time and again that it leads to healthier weight loss and maintenance, reversal of heart disease and other heart related issues as well as positively affecting other devastating diseases such as diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. He whole heartedly recommends avoiding animal fat 100% to ensure our greatest chance for long term health. In this episode, Dr. Barnard clears up the confusion about diabetes; its root cause and how to treat it, he breaks down the foundation of research, the problem with eggs and dairy, the motivation behind big food industry to keep the public confused and the positive “side effects” that people experience when switching to a plant-based diet. There is so much more to this conversation but you’re going to have to plug in yourself and collect the information first hand. This is an episode you do not want to miss and certainly one to share with as many people as possible, especially those suffering from the issues we discuss with Dr. Barnard.
