Now, all of a sudden, we have four new high-quality polls showing Kamala Harris ahead, though some others show it tied. Why the heck is Pennsylvania so close? What is really going on there? Should we believe the polls? Or not? We chatted with Democratic strategist Rebecca Katz, who is from Pennsylvania herself, worked on Senator John Fetterman's victorious 2022 campaign, and knows something about winning there. In “Tasting the South in the San Fernando Valley,” producer Rebecca Katz tells the story of how three black women created a soul food institution in one of the whitest parts of the San Fernando Valley that still thrives today. During the Second Great Migration in the 1940s, large numbers of Black Americans traveled west to Los Angeles, California. The Black population in Los Angeles increased nearly twelvefold from 1940 to 1970. In this episode, we learn about the racial history of the San Fernando Valley specifically a suburb just north of the city of Los Angeles. While Los Angeles as a city was diversifying after the second great migration, certain parts of the Valley remained largely white due to its iron-clad race restrictions—some of the harshest in the nation. In the episode, we hone in on one small town at the Western tip of the valley called Chatsworth, which was 98% white in the 1980s. Three Black women, Clara Huling, Roda Hadi, and Willie Stanford, were each already working in the restaurant industry in the Valley in the 1980s, not far from Chatsworth. They each had different ties to the South and they all missed Southern cooking and classic soul food. One night, they decided to open a restaurant—bringing classic soul food to the largely white valley. And they did just that. They came together and opened a tiny soul food spot in the unlikeliest of all places—Chatsworth. Nearly 40 years after that grand opening, Clara's granddaughter, Jessica Huling, still owns and operates the restaurant, which has been deemed some of the best soul food in Los Angeles by many reputable food outlets. In this episode, we hear from Jessica about how the restaurant thrived in such a white area through the years. We explore how the restaurant has overcome the odds, evolved its customer base, and greatly influenced the Black community in the Valley today. Learn more about your ad choices. Had a wonderful time reconnecting with Dean Farell Bruggeman, discussing playwriting and launching a career without any formal training. We discuss overcoming the obstacles without an academic start, the necessities of a successful scene, achieving truth and following your heart, muses and self projection as well as inspiration and unearthing plays buried in the "underwear drawer." Dean's quite inspirational with lovely energy. A mistake I make within our talk is about a piece correctly titled "American Pie" written by Rebecca Katz. I mistakenly label it as a play without "story" while I intended to say "plot." It is a beautiful piece from the Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festival Volume 1 that you can find a link to in our show notes. It's a wonderful example of a play based on characters and relationships, that you will also find woven within Dean's plays as well. We hope you enjoy the episode. Dean Farell Bruggeman is a Los Angeles based playwright whose plays have been seen thought the city at - Theatre Unleashed, Group Repertory, The Knighsbridge, Company of Angels, The Hudson, Road Theatre Company, Actors Company, The Three of Clubs, and Eclectic Company Theatre. Georgia was commissioned in 1993 to create anoriginal piece for the New Dance Ensemble and in 1986 for the Zenon Dance Company. She was one of five choreographers invited to create an original dance/video piece withvideographer James Byrne, in his project SOLO!.Although Georgia delighted in the process of interweaving original text and soundscores into her work, she also frequently collaborated with musician David Means. In 1986, Georgia was awarded a Bush Foundation Fellowship for Choreography. Withthese funds, she prepared an evening of new and old work titled Crosstalk, presented atDance Theater Workshop (NYC) in 1987. Performers included Laurie Van Wieren, TomCarlson, Alan Lindblad, Mary Beth Elchert and Mary Abrams. After a brief hiatus toassimilate her journey, she immerged with several evening-length Dance Theatercreations: World Without End Amen, produced by the MN Dance Alliance with JeromeFoundation funds in Extended Play; Omoomofamaliamenia, a collaborationcommissioned by The Southern Theater with the music group Zeitgeist; and severalself-produced theater events for a variety of venues. In 1990, Georgia incorporated as Georgia Stephens Contemporary Dance Theater. Thisgathering of dance performers included John Munger, Wendy Ansley, Diane Aldis,Ethan Emanual Balcos, Jill Haeberlin, and many other guest appearances (Mary Easter,Linda Shapiro, Lisa Carlson, Marilyn Habermas-Scher, Wendy Morris, Marty Winkler,Rebecca Katz). Around this same time, she joined with fellow dance artists Paula Mannand Shawn McConneloug to create SpaceSpace, an informal rehearsal andperformance studio. Georgia created work for this venue almost exclusively until its endin 1999. Georgia then began creating original work for David Means' Nobels eXperimental interMedia Group. Georgia's final premiere, Alibi Simile, featuring Jon Spayde, was created for Red Eye Collaboration's 2008 New Work series.During her career she taught classes and workshops at Webster College andWashington University of St. Louis, Ozone Dance, Carlton and St. Olaf Colleges.Georgia still pops up now and again to participate in various ways, as a participant inDavid Means' performances, as a stage arts consultant, and as an advocate for up-and-coming performing artists who push boundaries and challenge perceptual norms. Herwork was always based on the adage, “I move when I speak. I speak when I move.”This realization came to life out of the physical frustration of growing up as a stutterer. Itproduced a fascinating lifetime of liberating words “stuck inside” via breath andkinesthetic release. This, and her background of figure skating, provided Georgia with afoundation for her technique and unique movement style. And finally… THANK YOUA quick read of this biography caused me to realize that a mere mention of who didwhat and when, seems profoundly inadequate. Canine Grooming Academy (CGA) was founded by seasoned animal welfare leaders as a beauty school for dog grooming. It's a job training program for people with barriers to employment (e.g., domestic violence survivors) in the pet grooming industry, which faces a chronic shortage of skilled labor. This supply/demand problem leads to high prices and undermines accessibility for low-income pet owners, whose animals are at risk for ending up in shelters due to lack of care.

Episode 3 of The Politics of Everything investigates where the concept of electability comes from, the nature of the historical moments in which it crops up, and the risks we invite by using the term. How central to Joe Biden’s appeal is his ostensible electability? What do supposedly unelectable candidates have in common? How much are voters prizing familiarity or “safety” over policy, and will this calculation get us into trouble? Rebecca Katz, MS The Longevity Kitchen: the Top 16 Age-Busting Power Foods Despite America’s anti-aging obsession and numerous medical advances, for the first time in recorded history, life spans are actually shortening because of what people eat. But it doesn’t have to be so. The scientific community has come to recognize the extraordinary power good culinary choices have over our bodies. Taking the very best of this science into the kitchen, wellness authority Rebecca Katz, MS, and her latest cookbook, The Longevity Kitchen, prove that great taste and flavor along with culturally specific, nutrient-dense foods are the best ways to promote a healthy long life. Tapping into the cooking wisdom of elders from noted longevity hotspots, including Okinawa, Greece, and Costa Rica, the book shows how cuisines particular to each region lengthen lives.
