The second day of the Democratic National Convention ended with big speeches from former First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama—both of whom praised Vice President Harris and urged Democrats to get on board with Harris as the nominee. The night was full of forward-looking speeches focused on aspirations to win a majority in Congress and achieve progressive policies under a Harris-Walz administration. The night was marked with division too, as outside in the Chicago streets, pro-Palestinian demonstrators became violent toward police. FOX News Radio's Josh Kraushaar and Jared Halpern joined the Rundown to analyze what role the Obamas may play in 2024, potential division within the party, and the lines of attack against former President Trump. There's always a lot of focus on swing states during election seasons, as both parties are eager to win over undecided voters and hopefully flip it in their direction. While most Democrats are spending this week in Chicago, former President Donald Trump is holding rallies in several battleground states. Today, he visits Asheboro, North Carolina, marking his third visit to the Tar Heel State this month. Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis will join to discuss why he thinks his state will vote red in November and what he thinks Trump needs to do to make sure that happens. It's patient experience week here in the United States, and we have asked CHESS President Dr. Yates Lennon to share his story about how, as a practicing provider, he took the time to listen to feedback from his patients and implement changes which not only led to better patient experience scores but shed new light on the importance of value-based care. Doctor Lennon, welcome to the Move to Value Podcast. Would you share your story about being a provider and how you came to realize the importance of the patient experience in health care? So, my name is Yates Lennon and I am an ObGyn by training, practice, private practice, obstetrics and gynecology from 1993 to 1998 in Hot Springs, Arkansas and then in 1998 moved back to North Carolina, which was home, to practice in a small private practice in Asheboro, North Carolina. From 98 until 2008, we were a small independent group for physicians at at most. And in 2008, our group really saw the early, phases of value-based care coming. We saw, the landscape of regulatory requirements, changing quickly and, and understood that keeping up with that was going to be a significant challenge. We were one of the first ObGyn practices as a small group to go on to, electronic health records. So, we did that, and actually we did that in 2002, I believe. But then in 2008, as we really sort of started seeing the handwriting on the wall, we felt like we needed to join forces with a larger organization that could really help us keep up, stay abreast of what was happening while we continued to focus on delivering care to our patients. So in 2008, we merged our practice into what was then Cornerstone Health Care, based in High Point, as we merged in and became a part of that organization around 2011, I had expressed an interest to the leadership at that time of becoming more involved in an administrative capacity of some sort, did not have a particular path in mind, but but knew that I had always enjoyed the administrative side of medicine and, and running a small practice. So, I was asked at that time if I would consider taking on an overhaul of the patient experience for the Cornerstone Group. So, we formed a multidisciplinary team, included, physicians, advanced practice providers, CMAs, nurse assistants, nurses, office managers, front desk staff. The throughout the whole organization, through all levels of the organization came together and formed a group, that later was named peak, patient expectations are key. And in the course of that, I really began to see, how important patient experience really was. And, and even though I had practiced for a long time, I never really thought that much about the patient experience of care. Fast forward another year or two. Cornerstone had begun the their first efforts at a patient experience survey, which was done online.Prior to that, it was a paper survey, and it was handed out at the desk to patients. So not incredibly random. We employ a employed, a large provider that, did these online surveys. And I was actually very excited to see my first survey. I had a large patient panel, had a good reputation in the community, and was excited to see these first results. Unbeknownst to me, when they came in, our office manager took it upon herself to post them at the back door, and I came in and saw my scores and they were by far the worst of anyone in our practice, and I was devastated. I went through all of Kubler-Ross stages of grief in the span of about 15 minutes. But following that, I decided, you know what? There's a message here. So, what is that message? What What are my patients trying to tell me? are kind enough to fill out the surveys, tell me how I'm doing. I need to be wise enough to listen. So, I started assessing what a visit in my office actually looked like. I thought the the highest standard was efficiency, that if I was efficient and always on time, that that would be what made everyone happy....

To hear more about Star's plans for what its leaders hope will be a bright future, powered in part by an arts complex, WUNC spoke with Star Mayor Bill Hudson and Town Commissioner Ray Mims.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for October 12, 2023. More rain is likely for Thursday. And, according to the National Weather Service, showers will become progressively more likely as the day goes on in the Cedar Rapids area, topping out at about 80 percent probability. It will be a little bit warmer, with a high of around 61 degrees. It will also be breezy, with a wind of 20 to 25 mph gusting as high as 40 mph.In response to the surprise news that the University of Iowa won't be taking over its longtime community health care competitor Mercy Hospital after being outbid in a bankruptcy auction, UI President Barbara Wilson and UI Health Care Vice President Denise Jamieson expressed disappointment Wednesday.“We are disappointed in this outcome because we believe there is value in having patient care delivered by an Iowa-based health system,” Wilson and Jamieson said in their statement. “Nevertheless, we are heartened that the selected bidder, the bondholder, has committed to keeping Mercy Iowa City as a hospital.”According to the statement, the UI participated in the auction “because it is important to protect and enhance access to quality health care and jobs in our community.”Preston Hollow is a multibillion-dollar investor providing backing for “projects of significant social and economic value to local communities across the United States.”American Healthcare Systems is a 2-year-old Los Angeles-based health care operator that has made several health system-related purchases since its inception. It started with Asheboro, N.C.-based Randolph Health in 2021 — when American Healthcare received bankruptcy court approval to acquire that community health care system. The young corporation has a leadership team of four, including Chief Strategy Officer Faisal Gill, who told The Gazette he leads acquisitions and mergers for the company.“We want to save community hospitals,” Gill said, noting his company looks specifically for community hospitals facing challenges. “We want to turn them around and have them for the community. We did that in North Carolina and in Illinois. And we plan to do that in Iowa as well.”An inspection of Taft Middle School led to the evacuation of a portion of the building Wednesday because of structural instability. In a message to families, district officials announced that as a precautionary measure, students and staff will not use the east dome of Taft Middle— which houses the cafeteria, kitchen and performing arts classrooms — until further notice.District officials did not respond to questions from The Gazette about how much repairs are estimated to cost, the timeline of the repairs and where there will be room for students with a portion of the building closed. The east dome will not be occupied again until repairs are completed and the district receives an official notification that the use of that dome can be resumed, Taft Principal Gary Hatfield said in a message to families Wednesday. One of the two men killed in a shooting last week at a Cedar Rapids apartment complex was delivering a DoorDash order at the time of the shooting, according to his mother.Myron Snyder and Maurice Brown, both 21 and both of Cedar Rapids, were found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of 3960 Sherman St. NE when Cedar Rapids police responded to reports of gunshots at 8:21 p.m. on Oct. 5.Brown and Snyder died from their injuries.
