This Day in Esoteric Political History

It's February 4th. This day in 1980, the story is breaking about the FBI's "ABSCAM" operation -- a bribery sting that ended up implicating many congressman and other elected officials.Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss how the sting morphed from art theft to political corruption, the murky line between political maneuvering and corruption, and the waning appetite for political shenanigans post-Watergate.Sign up for our newsletter! You call everything “fake news” you don't agree with and……You believe Elon Musk is canceling The View and you applaud that but also don't realize it's a fake news story. Source - The real stock market. - Isn't the stock market a scam because instead of working class people making more money for pay the get an incentive based on how good a company performs, and also their funds are tied up into stocks for large corporations who can use the investments of working class people to create more wealth for the bigger corporations which prices the retail investors out of more things in the economy? - The Dems are far from innocent. BUT there's a difference between corruption and a fascist dictator. - Texas/climate change/insurance - yeah the 3 aren't going together. - "As climate change fuels a stark increase in extreme weather, it is also driving up the cost of homeowner's insurance. In recent decades, Texas has seen more billion-dollar disasters than any other state, causing the price of homeowner's insurance premiums there to skyrocket. Scott Friedman, senior investigative reporter at NBC's owned station in Dallas-Fort Worth, has more." - Source - The BROilgarchs - "Among the broligarchs' defining traits is an undemocratic conviction, made explicit by some, that their ideas should prevail regardless of the preferences of their fellow citizens. “Competition is for losers,” the headline of a 2014 Thiel op-ed in The Wall Street Journal declared—a sentiment that extends to the competition of ideas and policies on which democracy depends. - Source - Operation ABSCAM - On February 2, 1980, the world learned of our high-level investigation into public corruption and organized crime, infamously code-named ABSCAM. Today, David Waldman and Greg Dworkin deliver all of the up-to-the-minute RNC coverage we want and demand, which is none. Into the annals of history (Wikipedia) with Abscam, the Keating Five, and uhm “Rubbergate”, now goes Senator Bob Menedez, judged qualified to headline his very own corruption scandal and maybe even a couple hundred years of jail time. Getting Bob into history books and prison is easy though, compared to getting him out of Senate. That might take some effort. J.D. Vance got into politics for more than the bread. Vance has proven to be a zealous believer in whatever gets him to the next rung, just like his idol-idolizer Tucker Carlson. Tuck and J.D. understand that the quickest way to Donald Trump's heart is up his ample behind, that soft spot that Donald reserves for his most ardent parasites. MAGA will tell you, Donald Trump can't lose this election. He. Can. Not. Lose. There is no alternative, to them. But, if that inconceivable event to them happens, they will just add more enemies to their enemy list.  Democrats can win still, and will hopefully resist running their own Trump in 2028. Hey, remember when Donald Trump was shot, or almost shot, maybe? Well, it turns out that the shooter just might not be the only one that ever thought of shooting Donald Trump! Donald was caught on tape reminiscing about his courage in the face of danger with Robert F. Kennedy's son, along with discussing the real terror facing the world, baby vaccination.

On this edition of Parallax Views, Osgoode Hall Law School of York international law scholar Prof. Heidi Matthews joins us in the first segment to discuss the ICC (International Criminal Court) and its announcement that it will seek arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant, and Hamas leaders like Yahya Sinwar in relation to the Gaza War. We get into the nitty gritty of what this means for Israel/Palestine and discuss issues such as genocide, war crimes, the breaking news that Israeli intelligence has been engaged in a nearly decade long covert war against the ICC, the massacre in Rafah, international humanitarian law and international criminal law, and much, much more. In the second segment of the show, Quincy Institue for Responsible Statecraft intern Brett Heinz joins the show to discuss his Responsible Statecraft piece "Foreign bribery in Congress: 'The way business is done'?"as well as the Quincy brief he co-wrote with Ben Freeman entitled "Subsidizing the Military-Industrial Complex: A Review of the Secretary of Defense Executive Fellows (SDEF) Program". Recently, two Congressmen, Rep. Henry Cuellar and Sen. Bob Menendez, were indicted on charges of foreign bribery. But that's only the tip of the iceberg, argues Brett Heinz. We look at foreign bribery scandals from Koreagate to Abscam up to the present day and Heinz offers insight into what is needed to combat this problem in the halls of Congress and the political system in America more broadly.

Election Night 1980. The Iran Hostage Crisis is going on, the economy is struggling, and the ABSCAM scandal has several candidates seeking re-election while either under indictment or after conviction. It is with this back drop that both of our subjects, Representative John Jenrette and President Jimmy Carter, are facing re-election. It did not go well for either of them. In this episode we will let you watch the evening progress as the networks zero in on the ABSCAM Defendants elections for at least some drama because the Carter efforts are fairing so badly.  Ronald Reagan will be elected in a landslide and John Jenrette will lose in a surprising squeaker to John Napier. This election is also a treat because it will feature just about everyone , save Lyndon Johnson, we have focused on throughout our podcast run.  Jimmy Carter, John Jenrette, Henry Kissinger, Barbara Walters, Frank Reynolds, Ted Koppel, Walter Cronkite, and even Richard Nixon will all be featured at some point through out the night. Finally, the episode will end as former President Gerald Ford is interviewed  while Ronald Reagan comes out to address the nation for the first time as President - Elect and the two will talk on live TV.  It is a big night for the Republican Party as they win the Presidency and the Senate for the first time in a generation and break the New Deal Coalition that had dominated the nations politics since 1932.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

The ABSCAM though exposed deep corruption within the corridors of power and lot of the guilty paid with their political careers.

This episode for our Host Randal Wallace may be the most fun of any we have done. It tells the story of the life of the Congressional District and region of South Carolina that was the 6th District of South Carolina. It opens after ABSCAM has ended John Jenrette's career and everyone involved is moving on from the scandal. The District was represented by John Napier for a single term, then by a Florence , South Carolina Democrat named Robin Tallon for a number of years. But after the 1990 census the former 6th District is divided up geographically and its political strength evaporates. Tallon steps down as James Clyburn is elected to serve the new 6th District which engulfs Florence County. While Horry County is placed in the South Carolina First District where it is dominated by Charleston S.C. Over the next twenty years the region  has several different Congressman all but one of which is from Charleston County with various interest levels for what is happening in Horry and Georgetown Counties. We are represented by Tommy Hartnett, Arthur Ravenell, Mark Sanford, Henry Brown (Berkely County) , and Tim Scott. Then in 2010 everything changed. A new census led to a big fight in the South Carolina State House as the state was awarded a new 7th Congressional District. We will see the maneuverings by the man who could rightfully be called the Father of the 7th district, Alan Clemmons, lead to the South Carolina Pee Dee Region finally getting its seat back in which the region was represented together. That is where the fun part for our Host begins as we relive that very first race for Congress and the election of that first 7th district Congressman  ensues. which eventually led to the election of Tom Rice.  A race in which our host, Randal Wallace,  was a small part as a candidate for Congress. We will also see the rise of our new Congressman Russell Fry, who attained the office just at the beginning of this year , 2024, after his endorsement by former President Donald Trump, and his historic election victory. All of which will lead us back to a final look at the remarkable life and contributions to our region of our first, and until this year, only Horry County native Congressman John Jenrette. His career was a rollercoaster ride of wild excess, historic success, and an enormously dramatic and historic fall, all of which happened in a pivotal 6 year period that laid the foundation for a region of the country that can now lay claim to the title the fastest growing area in the nation. History Nerds UnitedLet's make history fun again! This is the episode where we listen in as Congressman John Jenrette's career comes crashing to its end. A sad ending to what had been an extraordinarily brave career that had seen John Jenrette help so many of his constituents with issue after issue, championing the causes of the nations small farmers, and standing up to protect the African American constituents so long forgotten  or ignored by almost every other leader in the region he had represented. We will contrast the unraveling of his career with that of another ABSCAM defendant who put up a fight rather than going quietly about giving up his seat in the Congress. We will look at the expulsion of Congressman Ozzie Meyers, and listen in on his attempt to defend himself on the floor of the House of Representatives. You will also get to hear and contrast for yourself the difference in the two cases involving Meyers and Jenrette. Finally, we will read to you several portions of Federal Judge John Garrett Penn's decision in the case of John Jenrette and John Stowe. It is an eye opening opinion in which you can sense his outrage over the government's behaviour in this particular ABSCAM case and especially in the case that was made against John Stowe who was John Jenrette's co-defendant in the case. By the time we get to the end of the episode it will certainly paint John Jenrette's case in a far more human light than many have come to perceive it in the 40 years since.   Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

An election year that would see him having to run in both a primary election and a general election against a formidable Republican candidate, who had once been an aid to Senator Strom Thurmond, in John Light Napier. In this episode , our host Randal Wallace  will read to you the oral history from the University of South Carolina of John Napier as he tells his rather remarkable story of how he put together a campaign that would eventually get him elected to the United States House of Representatives, in what would be a stunningly close race against John Jenrette, even though the incumbent Congressman, had been indicted, tried, and convicted, as the race unfolded.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

In this episode we let you listen to the only set of start to finish tapes that I am aware of that are available to the public, at least that I could find.  These tapes involve Congressman John Murtha , who was targeted but was never indicted.  John Murtha would go on and serve long enough after ABSCAM that he would become the longest serving Congressman in Pennsylvania history. I will say that this is a situation that I do not like to do given that Murtha had a long and distinguished career and never was charged, or tried, and certainly never convicted, of any wrongdoing in the case of ABSCAM. So let me just say in this description that we are only using this audio footage because it is the only footage that is available , that we were able to find, that contains an entire meeting between the FBI, the conman, and a sitting member of Congress.  All the the other footage is only segments of the sting the FBI ran on the Congressmen. I do feel though that when you listen in on this meeting, with stunningly clear audio, you will get a feel for how these meetings went and how these governmental officials were set up for the ABSCAM sting.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

What was Abscam? In this episode we try an answer that question for those of you who may not remember, or be as familiar with, what many will recall was the second biggest political scandal of the 1970's and early 1980's.  It involved six United States Congressman and one United States Senator.  They were :US Senator Harrison A. Williams (D-NJ)US Representative Frank Thompson (D-NJ)US Representative John Jenrette (D-SC)US Representative Raymond Lederer (D-PA)US Representative Michael "Ozzie" Myers (D-PA)US Representative John M. Murphy (D-NY)US Representative Richard Kelly (R-FL)It was basically a criminal sting operation conducted by the FBI using a known conman, Mel Weinberg, to set up various elected officials at several levels of the Government. It is the same scandal used for the basis of the movie " American Hustle". It was not just Congressman but also 23 other elected and governmental officials who were eventually netted into the criminal takedown. It also included one member of the New Jersey State Senate, members of the Philadelphia City Council, the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey, and an inspector for the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service who  were all also convicted. The operation was directed from the FBI's office in Hauppauge, New York, and was under the supervision of Assistant Director Neil J. Welch, who headed the bureau's New York Division, and Thomas P. Puccio, head of the Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force for the Eastern Division of New York.In all of these cases it stemmed from an investigation into theft, forgery, and stolen art. The FBI enlisted the help of a convicted conman to help them run a sting on criminals but as they made their way up the food chain they found they could nab some high ranking elected officials. All of the elected officials were somehow connected to this investigation. All but one. That one case that was the exception was the case of Representative John Jenrette of the 6th District of South Carolina, OUR CONGRESSMAN. In this episode you will hear from the conman himself, you will listen in as the FBI moves in on the congressmen in question, and you will listen in just as the nation did as all of this unfolded. Ironically, the only story they rarely  talked about in this early stage of the game, will be the story of John Jenrette, and as we will show you there are reasons for that.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

To the nation he was the congressman who was nabbed in ABSCAM and whose wife claimed to have had a late night lovemaking session with him on the steps of the United States Capital, all written about in the pages of  Playboy Magazine. To those of us in Myrtle Beach , South Carolina, where he lived.  John Jenrette was our eccentric, fun loving, famous neighbor, who was always ready with a joke, a laugh, or some remarkably visionary advice. It was almost impossible to grasp that 40 years ago he had once been on the fast track to what many believed was a political career headed for greatness, as possibly a future Speaker of the House of Representatives, or even one day, President of the United States. But it had all gone wrong and John Jenrette would not only see all of that go off track but he would never get the credit he deserved for all he had done to lay the foundation for the region we think of as South Carolina's 7th District today. He was a visionary leader who did great things for the nation, and the industry that allowed his Congressional District to thrive.  John Jenrette had taken stands to protect the rights  of African Americans often forgotten by the powers that be in the State of South Carolina and in the region of the nation Jenrette represented. John Jenrette had also fought hard to protect the needs of the small farmers who were also often forgotten in an era when big corporate entities were cementing their grip on Agriculture along with many other industries in the nation. John Jenrette had been a champion of the little man, the common man, the man who went to work every day and asked for nothing but an honest chance to live the American Dream.  Season 10 will often be a very personal story for me, because John Jenrette was my friend, and often a helpful advisor throughout two decades of service in the city I grew up in.  It will be a story I am excited to tell about a man who deserves to be remembered for all of the great things he accomplished, and had the vision to see, way ahead of everyone else.  A man who sadly let his flaws, and one very giant mistake, overshadow all the rest of what he had achieved......that is,  until now. Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

One World in a New World with George J. Chanos - Author, Speaker, Futurist As a former Attorney General for Nevada, George's introduction and highlights seem cursory for the depth of discussion that ensues. You'll have a grand journey with this conversation. As a futurist, his insights are very real and cognizant of current conditions. George relates his first event that spoke to him deeply was President Kennedy's assassination. It was a crucial moment for many. He admits that perhaps he isn't as introspective as the host, yet because of the experience he came to want to be president someday. George presents that deep down we all want to have a meaningful life. Would you agree? Would you be corruptible for enough money? George relates that after another event at 20 years of age that sent him another direction; being on the elevator with the ABSCAM co-conspirators as they were on their way to resign in disgrace. He knew he had to be bulletproof, metaphorically. What would you do or have you done to be bulletproof? How do you prepare for the future? How do you prepare your children for the future? George has some pertinent insights as to how he found direction in doing so after his heart attack and writing a book that essentially 'downloaded' his knowledge, as something for his daughter to have and know. George mentions Sheryl Sandberg's quote, "We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change." He speaks to the coming changes as we move toward the technological singularity. Georges goes on to mention 'Ogilvy on Advertising.' He specifically notes the 'helicopter perspective' as being essential in his problem-solving work, which was his special sauce for hire for many years. What is on your horizon? What do you see in our collective future? How are you preparing for a future that you want to create or live? What kinds of decisions are you making? Are you looking beyond the horizon? How far inside are you looking? How far outside are you looking? How are we addressing the challenges we face collectively? Change is coming and adaptability is key. There's more... tune in. But it has a lot in common with an earlier Russell film that was a big hit with audiences, if not with most critics, 2013's American Hustle, a film Matthew and I both quite liked. Released in the same month as Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle was derided by some as “Scorsese-lite”, a retread of Goodfellas stuffed with showy performances and cartoonish behaviour. It was reviewed as if it was supposed to be a historical drama (as it was based on the true story of two con artists who worked with the FBI to ensnare corrupt congressmen in the ABSCAM sting operation). But American Hustle worked for us as a ridiculous screwball comedy about desperate people chasing after the American Dream in a cynical age, a film quite possibly made by a madman, though at a time before more sordid details about Russell's personal conduct became public and tarnished his reputation. We try to make a case for why American Hustle is Good, Actually, but we also discuss why Amsterdam, another loopy story based on another obscure footnote in American history, with even more big names in the cast, doesn't succeed. With sidebars on the oncoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and our views on Elon Musk's early days of “running” Twitter. In the late 1970s, the FBI’s Abscam case showed the American public exactly how low many elected officials were willing to go for money. Many Americans applauded the Bureau for exposing the conmen in Congress. But some say Abscam was the FBI’s retaliation against Congress for investigating federal agents’ abuse of power.

Myron Fuller served in the FBI for 30 years. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review with Jerri Williams, Fuller is interviewed about his case agent and undercover role in the case code named ABSCAM, originally initiated to investigate and penetrate White Collar Crime and Organized Crime targets in the New York area. Specifically, it was begun as an undercover operation to infiltrate the conspiracy of members of organize crime to purchase a mortgage company for fraudulent and criminal purposes. The sophisticated ABSCAM scenario included a fictitious wealthy Lebanese businessman and a $7 Million bank account. Fuller and his undercover partner, agent John Hauss, represented that they worked for a consortium of foreign banks and a Lebanese businessman who wanted to funnel millions of Middle-East money into ventures in the United States. The scenario, with the cooperation of con man Mel Weinberg, allowed for the successful conviction of organized crime figures, conmen, and ultimately, corrupt politicians. Fuller retired as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Honolulu Division.

A major undercover corruption investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation became public in February 1980. Codenamed 'Abscam', the operation used a fictitious Arab sheikh who was supposedly looking to invest millions of dollars in the US. The case shocked America when it was revealed that half a dozen Members of Congress had been recorded receiving bundles of cash from representatives of the bogus sheikh in return for political favours. The sharp spike in the price of oil in the early 1970s provided petroleum-producing countries with enormous revenues--petrodollars--to invest in the global economy. By the second half of the decade, there was widespread fear in the United States that Arab governments, companies, and individuals were using their vast wealth the "buy up America." The Abscam affair of 1978-1980, in which FBI agents posing as rich Arabs induced several members of Congress to take bribes, reflected this anxiety about the potentially harmful influence of petrodollars. In the dominant American narrative, Abscam suggested that U.S. democracy itself was vulnerable to foreign corruption. To many Americans of Arab descent, however, the affair demonstrated that anti-Arab prejudice had reached alarming proportions and that concerted political action was necessary to combat it.
