What does accounting have to do with sustainability? Essentially, everything. In general, accounting isn't the first thing that comes to mind when most people think about sustainability, whether that means climate targets or diversity on boards. But just as research and regulations around sustainability have expanded in recent years, so has sustainability accounting, focusing on activities of an organization that have a direct impact on its environmental, social, and governance aspects. On the Delve podcast, Desautels accounting professor Brian Wenzel discusses the role of accounting and accounting research in facilitating how organizations reach their sustainability goals. For one, sustainability approaches and new global standards could be integrated into accounting practices to encompass all aspects of an organization's performance, from the big picture to the bottom line.“Accounting perhaps has been part of the problem with sustainability because accounting has led to short-termism inside organizations,” says Wenzel. “Next quarter's profits are much more tangible than something that will happen five or 10 years down the road. Even if making a sacrifice now will lead to a greater good in a decade, that's harder to quantify because it's so far in the future. Accounting maybe has been part of the problem but could also solve it.”This episode of the podcast is a collaboration between Delve, the McGill Sustainable Growth Initiative and its Director and Desautels Professor Javad Nasiry. The Sustainable Growth Initiative is also co-sponsoring the conference.Delve is the official thought leadership platform of McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management. In this podcast episode I sit down with Dr. Lori Desautels and I love what she said, “Behavior management is about adult behavior. It's not about kids. Our brains and bodies hold the state of our nervous systems, and it takes a steady adult to settle a child or adolescent.” I was hanging on her every word that she spoke at Delaware's Trauma Awareness Conference last month. She was the keynote speaker and I attended her breakout session. I'm planning to read her books and have been following her on YouTube and tiktok. I just love what she said in one of her sessions listen to this, “When we share a safe emotionally available sanctuary of space and a trusting presence, students can borrow from our calm in moments of dysregulation.” - Dr. Lori Desautels "Coregulation is often non-verbal. Coregulation is our biological priority. Coregulation is at the heart of discipline protocols." - Dr. Lori Desautels "The adult nervous system drives trauma work." - Dr. Lori Desautels" "Trauma gets stored in the body but can show up in our relationships," says Dr. Wong. SEASON 4 / EPISODE 7: Eric Desautels wasn't really into T-ball as a kid, so when his dad convinced him to take his first group MTB ride at the age of 6, it was on a bike that he discovered what would become his life's passion and joy. He quickly started entering some local races, and by the time he was in his early teens, he was already winning championships up against kids several years older. In addition to the races, there were healthy doses of your standard backyard BMX shenanigans, riding miles and miles to buy a Coke, and just the pure joy of summer adventures. And even as he competes at the Elite level now, the simple pleasure of riding a bike maintains the base for living a happy, healthy life. Dès la seconde moitié du 19e siècle aux États-Unis, rien ne va plus entre le nord abolitionniste et le sud esclavagiste. Le président Abraham Lincoln, nouvellement élu, tente coûte que coûte de reverser l'unité, mais les États du Sud quittent l'Union. L'historienne Mylène Desautels nous rappelle comment la guerre civile a éclaté le 12 avril 1861 chez nos voisins du Sud.

I found about Lori's work recently and after reading her book Connections over Compliance: Rewiring our Perceptions of Discipline, I really wanted to bring her on as a guest because I believe the work she is doing is revolutionary. Lori's work centers around helping educators, parents, and any adults who work with children shift the way they think about discipline by reaching for sustainable behavioral changes through brain state awareness rather than compliance and obedience. She's actively pushing back against reactive and punitive practices that can potentially reactivate the developing stress response systems of children, and is advocating for stronger co-regulation practices and regulated brain and body states for adults. During this conversation, we consider why there is such a powerful foundational belief that discipline and punishment go together, what happens when the traditional methods of punishment are imposed on children who are coming to school with trauma or a heightened nervous system, and why it's so important for educators to take responsibility over their own nervous system regulation.
