Guest: RJ Scaringe, CEO and Founder of Rivian“I'm very comfortable with things not being in their end state,” says Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe. The company's challenging mission — to help make 100% of the world's cars electric — will take a long time, and a lot of willingness to build the metaphorical plane in midair. As Rivian has grown from one person to seven to 17,000, though, RJ admits that there's a lot more pressure to not screw up. “There's all these conflicting emotions I had ... is this the right product?” he recalls. “Is it the right strategy? Am I capable of doing this? Things are happening in the auto industry, like how lower used car prices are driving down inflation, VinFast is forming a US dealer advisory board and Rivian is pressing ahead on future plans.Show Notes with linksUsed car prices have plummeted over the past year, reaching their lowest level since 2021, and are now the leading category reducing inflation, according to CoPilot's analysis of CPI data.Cox Automotive reports that the average list price for a used vehicle is now $25,251, down 7% from last year and the lowest since summer 2021.The June CPI report shows a 10.1% drop in used vehicle prices over the past year, with a 1.5% decline in the last month alone. The previous surge in used car prices was driven by a supply crunch in new vehicles.CoPilot CEO Pat Ryan explains that the supply of new vehicles has increased by about 50% since July 2023, easing pressure on the used market.“Consumers have finally found themselves with more options to buy new, rather than used,” Ryan noted.EV manufacturer VinFast is strengthening its presence in the U.S. by forming a Dealer Advisory Board to navigate the American market.VinFast aims to expand its U.S. dealership network with strategic advisory board members including David Coyle of Leith VinFast in NC, Damian Mills of VinFast Triad in NC, David Sansing, Elie Hanna, Bill AuffenbergVinFast has received 70 applications from dealers and plans to establish 125 third-party sales points by the end of 2024.David Coyle, Dealer Principal of Leith VinFast commented “This board represents a great opportunity for open communication and collaboration, ensuring VinFast remains at the forefront of the EV market.”Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently sat down with the Verge to cover the EV maker's future plans, why every EV looks like a Tesla, and the joint venture with VW.Rivian announced five new models this year: R2, R3, R3X, and updated versions of R1T and R1S. The R2 is set to launch in 2026 and already has 100K pre-orders.Scaringe believes that the slowdown in EV growth is not due to a lack of demand but rather a lack of variety in available models. He believes there is significant latent demand for EVs that meet diverse consumer needs. “Because of the Model Y's success, you have a lot of incumbents that have built products that look and feel and are shaped a lot like a Model Y.”The $5 billion joint venture with VW focuses on co-developing Rivian's streamlined electronic architecture, which reduces the number of ECUs (electrical control units) in vehicles, simplifying software updates and cost efficiency. Today, I'm talking with Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. RJ was on the show last September when we chatted at the Code Conference, but the past 10 months have seen a whirlwind of change throughout the car industry and at Rivian in particular. This year alone, the company unveiled five new models in its lineup and also just announced a $5 billion joint venture with Volkswagen. We got into all that and more. If you're a Decoder listener, you've heard me talk to a lot of car CEOs on the show, but it's rare to talk to a car company founder, and RJ was game to talk about basically anything — even extremely minor feature requests I pulled from the forums. It's a fun one. It's the first Friday in May as we talk about Rivian stepping up their presence in Normal, IL. We also cover the latest JD Power report regarding the service department as well as Cali taking aim at junk fees…for food.As Tesla cuts jobs, EV startup competitor Rivian is set to expand its Normal, IL plant, adding over 500 jobs to produce the new R2 crossover, leveraging a significant $827 million incentive package from the state. The Illinois deal is not a cash infusion, but includes $75 million from a deal-closing fund and $634 million in tax incentives over 30 years, with a commitment to maintain at least 6,000 jobs. This move diverts from an initial plan to build in Georgia, aiming for quicker market entry and saving $2.25 billion by consolidating production in Illinois. The company adds that it has invested $2 billion in Normal which has generated $3.9 billion of “value add” for the local economy. Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe said, "Gov. Pritzker has always been a strong advocate for providing economic opportunities for Illinois residents and business owners alike," J.D. Power's 2024 studies highlight aftermarket services gaining on franchised dealerships in customer satisfaction, driven by easier access and quicker service."This is a key opportunity for aftermarket providers to not only compete with franchised dealers on price but also to add customer value with a quicker and easier service experience," noted Leonard Martin from J.D. Power.Younger customers, particularly Gen Z, report lower satisfaction levels with aftermarket services; J.D. Power suggests enhancing advisor interactions to build trust and loyalty, emphasizing the potential for aftermarket providers to secure long-term customer relationships through satisfying service experiences.Providing photo or video documentation of recommended repairs significantly increases customer approval for the work: 51% of customers who receive such documentation proceed with the suggested repairs, compared to only 24% who do not receive this visual confirmation. However, franchised dealerships were rated as more trustworthy in areas such as utilizing technology to enhance service efficiency and their capability to handle complex vehicle repairs, showing higher customer trust and satisfaction scores in these specific aspects compared to aftermarket service providers.Starting July 1, California mandates the elimination of unexpected surcharges on restaurant bills, excluding taxes, requiring full disclosure of any fees in advertisements or menus.Diner opinions are mixed, with some appreciating the potential for a simplified billing process, while others worry about potential price increases as restaurants adjust to the new law.The law aims to prevent customers from double-tipping and paying for undisclosed fees, a practice especially common in San Francisco where service charges can be as high as 20%.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

It's Thursday and we have guest host Steve Greenfield again to talk about the UAW's stated intention to invest big in organizing new plants. Rivian Automotive held an earnings call on Wednesday February 21st 2024, during which an overview of the company's recent financial performance and strategic direction was presented to the investors. Notably, CEO RJ Scaringe informed investors: "Our order bank has notably reduced overtime as deliveries have more than doubled in 2023 versus 2022 along with the impact of cancellations due to both the macroenvironment and the customer factors I just referenced." The financial metrics revealed during the call showed the company generated impressive revenue of $1.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023. However, according to the information provided during the call, the troubling aspect was the reported negative gross profit per vehicle delivered which stood at -$43,000. As a response, Rivian acknowledged their commitment towards pursuing cost efficiencies and material cost reduction initiatives to enhance profitability. From a product and services standpoint, Rivian's R1T and R1S vehicles were portrayed as central to the company's success. As stated during the earnings call, the recent launch of the Standard Range variant had resulted in increased interest and demand. Rivian has also outlined its plans to ensure brand visibility and improve customer engagement with initiatives such as expanding sales and service locations and enhancing customer experiences. Scaringe, during the earnings call, acknowledged: "Our order bank has notably reduced overtime as deliveries have more than doubled in 2023 versus 2022 along with the impact of cancellations due to both the macroenvironment and the customer factors I just referenced." This statement provides an insight into how Rivian has managed to navigate the challenges in the market and boost its delivery numbers. As advised on the earnings call, Rivian is keenly observing consumer trends especially in the rising demand for electric vehicles. The company demonstrated intent to seize these opportunities by launching the R2 and focusing on meeting consumer demand, with particular goal directed towards their delivery targets for 2024. In terms of strategic direction, the call highlighted Rivian's emphasis on several key aspects. The company plans to focus on cost efficiency, production optimization, and investments in technology. Enhancing customer experiences, expanding market capabilities, and development of their R2 platform are also part of their plans. Based on the call, Rivian also plans to facilitate a number of shutdowns in 2024 to streamline material costs, implement engineering changes and manage supplier cost reductions in an effort to better profitability. In conclusion, while the earnings call showed Rivian Automotive's determination to improve its overall fiscal health and expand its market presence, future success isn't fully guaranteed and would largely depend on the company's effective execution of its strategies. It is evident though, that Rivian is laying the groundwork for potential growth in the competitive electric vehicle market by targeting consumer trends, focusing on product development and striving for improved customer engagement. We've got another interview from the Code Conference today. My friend and co-host, CNBC's Julia Boorstin, and I had a chance to talk with Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe. Rivian is a newer company — RJ started it in 2009, and it took more than 10 years to start shipping cars to consumers. But its first vehicle, the R1T pickup, made a big splash when it arrived in 2021, and the company has more back orders for both the R1T and its second vehicle, the R1S SUV, than it can handle. For now. We asked RJ about that production ramp and whether Rivian can meet demand, and whether it's just early adopters buying EVs or if they've finally gone mainstream. The conversation also touched on Rivian's deal with Amazon and the auto industry's push toward subscription features. And, of course, I had to ask Scaringe about the Cybertruck. How could I resist?! When you consider the risk of doing business, it doesn't get much bigger than starting a car company: competition is formidable, startup costs are in the billions, and very few people believe you can pull it off. That's the massive challenge RJ Scaringe walked into in 2009, when he launched his truck and SUV company, Rivian. To add to the risk, RJ wanted to build fully electric vehicles while attracting drivers who'd never bought them, so he knew his trucks had to be fun and sporty: appealing in their own right. Rivian's journey has taken RJ from an old warehouse in Florida to a massive Midwestern car manufacturing plant; and from years of stealth planning to months of anticipatory buzz from buyers and the industry. Rivian rolled its first trucks off the line in 2021, and is hustling to fulfill tens of thousands of vehicle reservations from excited customers. There have been pivots, sleepless nights, and, of course, multiple supply chain issues, but today, Rivian is valued at $30 billion and is a major player in the electric vehicle industry.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey criticized the company's board in a series of tweets on Sunday as the group is now tasked with evaluating a takeover bid from billionaire Elon Musk. Responding to another Twitter user describing the “plots and coups” that played out early on in the history of Twitter's board, Dorsey replied, “it's consistently been the dysfunction of the company.” Elon Musk said Monday that Twitter's board of directors won't be compensated for serving if he acquires the company. “Board salary will be $0 if my bid succeeds, so that's ~$3M/year saved right there,” Musk said in a tweet. It's not clear who would be appointed to serve the board of a Musk-owned Twitter. Currently, Twitter spends about $2.9 million in cash and stock awards to board members, according to a filing with the SEC. Executives do not receive additional compensation for their seats, so that does not include payments for CEO Parag Agrawal and former chief Jack Dorsey. Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe remains “really confident” it can produce 25,000 vehicles in 2022. That estimate is down from initial expectations of about 50,000 vehicles, slashed by supplier disruptions. Scarcity in semiconductor chips and wire harnesses poses the biggest hurdles for the company. Both are critical components in vehicles.
Show #1438 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 17th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VOLKSWAGEN CEO HERBERT DIESS ON 60 MINUTES - CBS NEWS - Lesley Stahl: Volkswagen pulled out of Russia very early. I wonder how hard a decision that was for you. Herbert Diess: It is quite a hard decision for us because we have about 7,000 people -- loyal people working for us in Russia. We have three plants there. We have customers since many years, so it's very difficult decision. But strong sanctions are probably the only measures we have currently, because what we see in Europe is really an appalling war. - Lesley Stahl: You know, in the United States, the best-selling vehicles are trucks. As far as I know, you do not have plans to make an electric truck for the American market. Herbert Diess: Not yet Lesley Stahl: Not yet? - Herbert Diess: Yeah. It is a big challenge. And historically there haven't been too many cases where the successful companies in the old world could demonstrate that they are still successful in the new world. Lesley Stahl: And you have so many competitors in the electrification area. Herbert Diess: Yeah. It's really the new competitors which are especially challenging for us, no, coming from software background, battery background, Apple being said to entering at some stage, no? Those are probably the competitors we have to take most seriously. The Rivian CEO made the comment while giving reporters a tour of the company's plant in Normal, Illinois. - "Put very simply, all the world's cell production combined represents well under 10% of what we will need in 10 years," Scaringe said, according to The Journal. "Meaning, 90% to 95% of the supply chain does not exist," he added. - Last year, the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) released a report that found that battery cell production will not be able to meet demand until 2030, causing an estimated shortage of over 18.7 million electric cars between 2022 and 2029. - "I'm on the phone with semiconductor supplier CEOs every day," Scaringe said, according to report from Axios. "It's a day-in, day-out battle for allocation and the number we get is precisely equal to the number of vehicles we build," he added. Audi previewed the EV's sleek design with a concept, and it appears as if the production version will retain the majority of the styling. Our second batch of A6 E-Tron spy shots captures the electric sedan testing at the famous Nurburgring race track. - The new photos continue to show the Audi covered in a full-body camouflage wrap. - The new electric sedan will ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture jointly developed between Porsche and Audi. While we know the car's platform, we don't have any powertrain details. Audi previewed the A6 E-Tron with a concept that packed a dual-motor setup making 470 horsepower (350 kilowatts) that could send it to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than four seconds. The PPE architecture will also underpin the upcoming electric Porsche Macan and the Audi Q6 E-Tron crossover. The mobile connector bundle comes with an adapter that allows drivers to charge their cars from a standard 110v household outlet, with other adapters available for purchase separately. - In a reply to a user's reaction to the situation, Musk confirmed that the company will no longer include the Gen 2 mobile connector with new car purchases. “Usage statistics were super low, so seemed wasteful,” Musk explained, adding that Tesla “will be including more plug adapters with the mobile connector kit” in the future. It's unclear which adapters Tesla will start including with the kit. - The Gen 2 mobile connector is still listed as costing $275 on Tesla's site, and you couldn't purchase one even if you wanted to; the mobile connector is currently out of stock, and the same goes for the Gen 1 connector. That said, it's unclear how long either accessory has been out of stock or whether a supply chain shortage is contributing to Tesla's decision. The Forbes report indicates Tesla had only applied for a “small portion” of the money to build its first four stations, which would also accept non-Tesla EVs, much like a “pilot” program the company has started to test in Europe. TESLA'S V11 UI CHANGES ARE RECEIVING STRONG CRITICAL FEEDBACK FROM DRIVERS - Reveral Tesla owners have shared strong criticisms of Software V11's user interface, particularly with how it made accessing some important functions more difficult compared to V10. - A good number of these complaints could be seen in the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, a community of over 1.48 million users. Over the past few days alone, numerous Tesla owners have gone on the subreddit to share their displeasure at the UI changes that came with V11 — to much agreement among the online group's users - Tesla owners are not happy about the fact that some functionalities such as driver profiles, seat warmers, trip information, save dashcam, and tire pressure (to name a few) now require more taps to access than before. Some Tesla owners have gone as far as to state that since some features now require an extra step to access, their vehicle could end up being less safe. - Tesla owners noting that the icons in the new update do not have the same uniform, polished look as those that were used in V10. Others noted that the position of information such as the vehicle's speed had regressed as well, as the driver's hand could end up covering the speedometer - The fact that there are icons for Tesla Arcade, Toybox, and Theater — which are inaccessible when the car is on Drive anyway — and none for tire pressure, trip information, seat heaters, and lights, was deemed strange as well. Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-v11-ui-critical-user-feedback-reviews/ BMW INTERVIEW “MAKING CHARGING EVEN EASIER AND MORE CONVENIENT” - Pieter Nota (responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales) - Right now, charging infrastructure is failing to keep pace with sales of electrified vehicles. That is why we urgently need rapid infrastructure expansion – especially in urban, densely populated areas and over longer distances. This is also up to policymakers: Economical operation must be ensured – and, if possible, promoted – especially while infrastructure is still in the expansion phase. - Who's going to build a second charging post if the first one can't cover its costs? But, in the long run, the market has to be able to regulate itself in the interests of the customer. What we need for this are clear objectives and incentive systems. The same applies to fleet operators, to support their transition to electromobility. - We have set ourselves ambitious goals for electromobility next year: We aim to more than double sales of our pure electric vehicles compared to this year. In 2022, we will be focusing on two more approaches that will make charging even more attractive. First, we will be integrating charging even more deeply into our myBMW and myMINI app. - This means our customers will be able to find everything related to their vehicle in a single app – including access to public charging points. Second, we will continue to promote charging networks – which will make the charging process simpler. Outside of the initial teaser photos released by Rolls-Royce earlier this year, we haven't seen any other details of the electric Rolls. That's changed today, as one of our spy shooters captured a test Spectre both on the pavement and on a flatbed. - The most intriguing angle of view is directly from the front. We can just make out that this Rolls appears to be wearing a version of the upcoming stacked headlight look previously spied on soon-to-come BMW models like the next-gen 7 Series and refreshed X7. - One of the last intriguing items of note is the angle of the rear tire when the driver has the steering wheel at full lock. It's not an extreme angle of rear-wheel steer, but the rear wheel does appear to be turned in the opposite direction as the fronts. This car being a coupe, it's reasonable that it wouldn't need a massive amount of rear-wheel steering to be agile in a city, but it's still a Rolls-Royce, so coupe or not, it's massive. - Rolls-Royce says the production car is coming in 2023 · Original Source : https://www.autoblog.com/2021/12/27/rolls-royce-spectre-spy-shots/ CHINA SETS PLAN FOR L3 AND HIGHER-LEVEL ADVANCED AUTONOMOUS DRIVING APPLICATION - China's Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission released the informatization plan for the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) (the Plan), including plans for V2X and autonomous driving development within the country. - an energy network is also included in the Plan. Specifically, the government aims to build an optimized and balanced energy management system, allowing real-time monitoring, online analysis, and dispatch for regional energy information. The government will push forward the mutual interaction between electric vehicles and intelligent grid, forming an intelligent and efficient charging infrastructure system with ample charging piles. Original Source : https://autonews.gasgoo.com/icv/70019430.html HERE'S A FIRST LOOK AT THE TESLA MODEL X PLAID - The Tesla Model S and the Model X share the same platform. It makes sense then that both would end up getting premium-level Plaid tri-motor speedy goodness. - the first Model X Plaid SUVs have made their way into the hands of the public. - Of course, the new car has a landscape infotainment system which is a big upgrade over the old portrait-style version. It's also got the rear-seat screen that controls media and climate controls. - It's important to note that while not discussed in the video, there are clearly some hilariously mismatched panels. Most notably, the Falcon-wing doors look like they settle too low on each side. This causes them to not line up with the front doors or the rear quarter panels. - We know that the Model S Plaid has had some major braking problems. It seems to go without saying that the much heavier Model X is likely to have similar if not worse issues reigning in its 1,020-horsepower. Deliveries of the two EVs are now underway, albeit in small numbers, but Rivian has more than 70,000 preorders to work through. - As of December 15, the CEO wrote, “we had approximately 71,000 preorders for the R1T and R1S in the US and Canada.” Of that, “the large majority” opted for the Adventure Package trim, with Rivian's Large pack battery. - Rivian also has a Max pack battery, which costs $10,000 more but promises 400+ miles of range. However that configuration – though available for reservation-holders to select – wasn't expected to go into production until later in 2022. Now, Scaringe says, that timeline has been pushed back further. - Of the roughly 71,000 preorders, only around 20% are for the Max pack battery. - Rivian will be reaching out to those customers – who, the CEO acknowledges, could have put down reservations as far back as 2018 – in January, with the offer of changing their preorder Original Source : https://www.slashgear.com/rivian-warns-of-delays-for-evs-with-biggest-battery-and-smallest-price-28704348/ SEMICONDUCTOR SUPPLY AND DEMAND CRISIS INTENSIFIES - The release date of customers highly favored electric vehicles has been delayed by more than a year due to the imbalance in supply and demand from the shortage of vehicle semiconductors. Even if consumers sign a new contract on the remaining days of this year, they won't be able to acquire the car in 2022, but in 2023. There are cases where the price of a used car overtakes the price of a new car or even gives up subsidies to purchase as shortage of the supply becomes more prevale - Front-line branches are waiting 13 months for Kia EV6, 12 months for Genesis GV60, and 8 months for Ioniq5 from contract to shipment are required. The actual delivery date may change again depending on the status of subsidies by local governments. An official from the Kia branches said, "The EV6, which uses a lot of semiconductors, has been delayed for more than a year, so it is difficult to confirm when it will be shipped if you sign a contract now. We only received an official letter from the head office telling us to announce change in delivery schedule from time to time to avoid customer complaints.” - As the delay in shipments becomes a serious issue, the price of a used car are even exceeding that of a new car. The longer the delivery period lasts, the higher the used car price becomes. NEW LOTUS TYPE 132 SUV PREVIEWED IN OFFICIAL IMAGE - Lotus has given a first look at its maiden SUV, which is codenamed the Type 132 and due to be revealed in full next year. - As first reported by Autocar, the Type 132 has been in development since 2016 and is set to launch with two four-wheel-drive variants, offering between 600bhp and 750bhp. It will be able to accommodate batteries ranging from 92-120kWh in capacity and will offer 800V charging. - The Norfolk firm has released the first in a series of official videos that will build up to the launch of the new Aston Martin DBX rival, which will be a key element of its bold growth strategy under the ownership of Chinese car giant Geely. - The Type 132 will be built at a new £900 million manufacturing facility in Wuhan, China, and will be one of two Chinese-built EVs the firm will launch in the next five years. They are looking to secure an edge with next-generation batteries in a price war with Chinese battery companies. - The key is competition with Chinese battery companies. China's CATL, the world's largest battery company, is building a battery plant in Germany for commercial operation from 2022. CATL produces prismatic batteries and is expected to focus on expanding orders from Volkswagen. In March, Volkswagen announced that it would increase the proportion of prismatic batteries to 80 percent by 2030. - Samsung SDI and CATL will compete fiercely in the prismatic battery sector. Samsung SDI is betting on Gen. 5, a next-generation prismatic battery to be used for BMW electric vehicles. - Major European automakers such as Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen are placing battery orders worth tens of trillion won to secure batteries for their vehicles to be launched after 2024. According to Auto Motor und Sport, two of them will be mounted at the back and the third one will be positioned on the front axle. The report mentions the e-motor driving the front wheels will have less power. - the same three-motor setup could be installed in a full-fat M version of the next 5 Series in EV form (i5) with a yet-to-be-confirmed total output of 750 horsepower. - It won't ride on a dedicated electric car platform as it will share its underpinnings and most of the design as well as shape with the combustion-engined models. For a bespoke EV from Bavaria, 2025 will be the year when the Neue Klasse architecture will debut. Thanks to an outstanding, two-part presentation and teardown conducted by Ingineerix, we can take an in-depth look at this new solution, hinted at in early 2021 by Elon Musk and shown only briefly at the delivery event. - previously Tesla was using in the Model S/Model X a 12 V, 33 Ah lead-acid AGM battery. It stores about 0.4 kWh of energy, but weight is quite substantial: 27 lbs (12 kg). According to Ingineerix, such batteries last in Teslas about 2-4 years, which is pretty low and sometimes causes unexpected problems if the car stops working. - The new,lithium-ion battery is much smaller and much lighter (only about 4 lbs / 1.8 kg). That's because it's much higher energy density, but also has a lower energy content. We assume that with a more reliable and "smart" solution, there is no need for 0.4 kWh. The battery has only a 0.1 kWh of energy (99 Wh to be precise) and a capacity of 6.9 Ah, according to the description. - the new battery consists of a BMS circuit board made by CATL and four prismatic NMC lithium-ion battery cells (6.9 Ah each), connected in series. During an interview on “Squawk on the Street,” CNBC's Jim Cramer asked about PepsiCo's plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. - “Transportation is about 10% of our overall gas emissions so it's important and we're working on different solutions. We replace our fleet regularly, every ten years more or less...and we're already starting to buy electric trucks actually from Tesla. I mean I don't want to promote anybody but that's the brand we're using so far and we're getting our first deliveries this Q4.” - The comments come almost four years after PepsiCo first announced it would purchase 100 Tesla Semi trucks. It was the largest known pre-order of the vehicle at the time. - On the company's Q2 earnings call in July, Tesla said it was pushing the Semi program to 2022 due to supply chain challenges and the limited availability of battery cells. GM were ready to pull the trigger, and Rivian was ready to take the money. WSJ reports that Rivian's leaders were skeptical of GM - in April of 2019, Ford announced it would be investing $500 million in Rivian. Since then, Ford's investments have reached $1.2 billion. When you set up your profile, you can select which driving mode you prefer the vehicle to default to upon starting. That's a great feature to have, and unfortunately, not all automakers allow the owner to do that. All too often, the vehicle defaults to a set mode every time it turns on and the driver has to then select the mode he or she prefers to drive in." On off-roading: "Rock crawling mode enables a slow, steady ascent or descent. There's no need to play with the throttle to maintain the proper RPMs or even use the friction brakes to slow down. That's because the regenerative braking system holds you back slowly and steadily, even better than the hill descent modes I've used on a variety of gas-powered AWD vehicles." On the ride height: "The R1T's ground clearance can be adjusted by as much as 6.5 inches, from 7.9 to 14.4 inches. For comparison, that's 3.3 inches more ground clearance than the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, which tops out at 11.1 inches. The R1T isn't hampered with driveshafts and exhaust systems to protect underneath either. Instead, there's a protective shield of high-strength steel, alloyed aluminum, and carbon fiber." On the bed: "The bed is only 54 inches long with the tailgate up and will be a problem for some folks. My Toyota Tacoma has a 60-inch bed and that is, on occasion, too small for some jobs. Yes, it does have an 11.6-cubic-foot gear tunnel that can accommodate cargo, but large items that need to go in the bed may not fit without leaving the tailgate down and that presents its own set of issues while driving." Air compressor for reinflating tyres Will work as FWD to increase range They got rid of Low regen mode to get more EPA range 150kW max regen One pedal driving Auto hold Autosteer works where there is HD maps No Apple Carplay/Android Auto Alexa will be added - unsurprising! John Voelcker for Forbes: "Dimensionally, Rivian's R1T sits comfortably in the midsize pickup class with the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier. It's the widest of that group by an inch at 79 inches, but its 218-inch length and 72-inch height map neatly with the others. The only sore point, perhaps, is its limited 54-inch long bed. It opens up to 83.6 inches with the tailgate down, but with the gate up it's closer to the compact Ford Maverick's bed compared with most short-bed midsize trucks. I drove the R1T for a lengthy day over a variety of roads and non-roads, at altitudes from 9,000 to 12,000 feet. By the end of the day, it was clear Rivian has a decent shot at being the second EV startup to make it into the big leagues. Buyers looking for a full-size all-electric pickup truck will have to wait until the Ford F-150 Lightning hits the dealers, but this is a legitimate midsize pickup that should do virtually everything owners want trucks to do. " Hannah Elliott at Blolomberg: "My first impression was that Scaringe and his tight-knit team did try to think of everything when they made it. It felt as if they had taken their own notes over many back-country climbing and biking trips, then made a vehicle to suit their own Patagonia-loving lifestyle. With nearly 15 inches of clearance, it had me crawling over gullies and up hard-packed inclines with little effort. I loved the shape and feel of the steering wheel and the craftsmanship of the natural-grain ash-wood trim along the doors and dashboard. The cabin seal proved quiet as I plunged through the wilderness. Rivian's fit-and-finish elements and build quality are better than what Tesla has given us to this point. . Its 800-plus horsepower and 900 pound-feet of torque from four electric motors easily pushed it to 100 mph as I glided past RVs lumbering down Loveland Pass. And that's plenty of power for hauling—more than the F150 and its peers. Rivian says it will hit 60 mph in 3 seconds; it certainly felt so. Top speed will be electronically limited to 110 mph." Read more: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-28/rivian-r1t-review-electric-ingenuity-but-don-t-depend-on-it-for-work Tim Levin at MarketsInsider: "Powered by four torquey motors - one driving each wheel - the R1T made light work of any obstacle and steep grade I threw at it during a day of off-roading (on trails Rivian hand-picked to showcase the model's strengths). The R1T promises to put out more than 800 horsepower and over 900 pound-feet of torque between the front and rear wheels. But the truck offers a lot more than just four-wheel drive and a ton of power. Since its motors operate independently, the R1T can instantly deliver more or less power to any wheel at any moment, a huge asset for tackling uneven terrain. Plus, you can toggle between drive modes that change the R1T's ride height, suspension settings, and throttle response for different types of off-roading." Read more: https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/rivian-r1t-ev-electric-pickup-first-drive-impressions-photos-2021-9 Mitchell Charle at The Verge: "I don't want to pretend like we were doing hardcore rock crawling, but we certainly got to see how the truck handled steep, loose climbs, water crossings, and situations where we were driving at an extreme angle over very uneven ground (though I don't think we ever lifted more than one wheel off the ground). And the R1T handled all those things beautifully. The weight of the R1T's 135kWh battery pack is spread out along the entire length of the truck, helping it avoid some traditional truck problems. I didn't experience any of the fishtails that I used to deal with when I owned a Chevy S10 or when I drove a mid-2000s Ford Ranger. That weight also keeps the Rivian planted when going into curves, without the body roll that sometimes comes with bigger cars. Since Rivian charged the trucks for us overnight, I never had any range anxiety with the R1T, even while we were off-roading. Our test model was capable of going 314 miles on a full charge, but I don't think I ever saw it dip below 90 miles, even after a full day of driving." Read more: https://www.theverge.com/transportation/2021/9/28/22697309/rivian-r1t-electric-truck-test-drive-off-roading-camp-tested Kristen at TechCrunch :"During the off-road section, the independent air suspension proved its worth. Drivers can pick from one of several modes: all-purpose, sport, off-road, conserve and towing. Within the off-road mode, there are even more options, including off-road auto, rock crawl and rally. There's also a drift mode, which I didn't test. The ride height, damping, pedal map that controls regenerative braking and suspension on the vehicle adjust depending on the drive mode. For instance, in conserve mode, the vehicle lowers to about 8 inches; in off-road, it can be as high as 14.9 inches. During our off-road excursion, we put the vehicle up and over steep slopes and even made a shallow ford. The ground clearance, combined with an approach angle of 34 degrees, a breakover of 25.7 and departure angle of 29.3 degrees, meant the vehicle never scraped or stuttered. There were moments when, as I prepared to drive around a particularly large boulder — the standard technique in other vehicles — a Rivian employee would encourage me to just drive over it. And I would, without the negative results." https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/28/first-drive-rivian-delivers-the-electric-truck-weve-been-waiting-for/?guccounter=1 Josh Rubin at Cool Hunting: "Yes, Rivian is a mobility company but the moment we get in to the R1/T it's clear they're also a technology company. Two large screens comprise the entire vehicle interface beyond the steering wheel and stalks on either side of it. While controlling everything—from entertainment to drive mode to air vent direction—through a touchscreen is a paradigm shift from the typical truck, it's commonplace for tech-forward EVs. Plus, keeping as much control on-screen as possible means that new features, updated functionality and evolved interfaces can all be delivered over the air through a simple software update. Driving on the gritty, rocky, steep, muddy, narrow and complicated tracks around Breckenridge and through the White River National Forest with the windows open we hear babbling brooks and the breeze in the trees with the only sound created by the R1/T being the crunch of rocks below the tires." RIVIAN DELAYS FIRST ELECTRIC PICKUP DELIVERIES TO SEPTEMBER - Rivian has delayed the first deliveries of its long-awaited electric pickup truck again, this time until September. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe broke the news to buyers in an email sent Friday morning. - The Amazon and Ford-backed EV startup originally planned to start delivering its electric pickup, the R1T, and its SUV, the R1S, in 2020. But it scuttled those plans at the beginning of the pandemic and said at the time that it would start deliveries in 2021 instead. Rivian eventually settled on starting deliveries of the R1T in June of this year, only to push that back to July, and now to September. - Scaringe also copped to poor communication with reservation holders. - Rivian was founded in 2009 but kept an extremely low profile until 2018 when it debuted the R1T and R1S at the LA Auto Show. Since then, it has raised an incredible amount of cash — more than $8 billion — from Amazon, Ford, and other institutional investors. Earlier this summer, we announced that deliveries would begin in July; however, the timing for the first deliveries of the R1T has shifted to September, with the R1S shortly thereafter in the fall. I wanted to be sure you heard this from me directly," - "The cascading impacts of the pandemic have had a compounding effect greater than anyone anticipated. Everything from facility construction, to equipment installation, to vehicle component supply (especially semiconductors) has been impacted by the pandemic. "Beyond these unforeseen challenges, launching three new vehicles while setting up a multi-vehicle manufacturing plant is a complex orchestra of coordinated and interlinked activities where small issues can translate into ramp delays." - "We have now built hundreds of vehicles as part of our validation process, with many of those spotted out in the wild covered in unique vinyl wraps. I have been asked why we aren't delivering those vehicles or why we continue to test rather than deliver. It's about half the size and time of a traditional show, but automakers such as Ford Motor, Volkswagen and others are trying to make the most of it. That includes showcasing new electric vehicles. Aside from displaying vehicles inside the McCormick Place Convention Center, automakers are offering test drives and rides in new electric vehicles. Auto executives believe such experiential marketing efforts are one of the key first steps to increasing EV adoption. - getting consumers into the Mach-E and allowing them to see new EVs such as the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup, which is expected to go on sale next year, is critical for people to understand that EVs are real and not science projects. That already suggested it would be a relatively affordable vehicle, but we did not expect it to cost less than RMB100,00 – the equivalent of $15,500 at the current exchange rate. - Dolphin will have two derivatives. The SR (Standard Range) will be able to run 301 km under the NEDC cycle testing. It presents a 30.72 kWh battery pack - BYD also developed the LR (Long Range) version with a 44.93 kWh battery pack. With the extra LFP cells in its Blade Battery pack, it could run up to 405 km – also according to the NEDC cycle. - If the BYD Dolphin can really recover 150 km (93.2 miles) of range in only 5 minutes and there are enough fast chargers able to deliver that, a bigger battery pack might not be needed. KIA UNVEILS THE EV6, ITS FIRST DEDICATED EV "Kia has revealed the first official images of the EV6 – its first dedicated Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) built on the company’s new EV platform: the Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP. The EV6 is also the first of Kia’s next-generation BEVs to be developed under a new design philosophy that embodies Kia’s shifting focus towards electrification." says Next Green Car: "Kia has not yet provided any technical data on the EV6 with the revealing of the name and the sketch of the design. However, the Ioniq 5 should provide some good clues here, since it is based on the same platform. This basis will give Kia the scope for batteries with 58 or 73 kWh, powertrains between 125 and 225 kW. The technical details of the electric Kia might differ slightly, but the Kia EV6 should also have the fast-charging capability of up to 220 kW and the impressive charging curve of the Ioniq 5." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9106/kia-unveils-the-ev6-its-first-dedicated-ev/ DACIA SPRING EV NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER, PRICED FROM €12,403 Dacia is opening a new chapter in its history with the launch of all-new Spring, the brand’s first 100% electric car. In addition to requests from North America, Europeans also expressed a strong desire to become beta testers. Musk wrote that Tesla will ask regulators in order to make possible the proliferation of FSD Beta in Europe." reports Tesmanian: "Also, in response to a request from a Tesla owner from Europe, Musk replied that the company would ask the regional regulators to authorize the use of FSD Beta there. If this approval is granted, it will become an additional stage in the development of FSD. The fact is that the layouts of cities in the United States and Europe are significantly different. Europe is characterized by compact cities with many narrow streets saturated with dense traffic." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-will-request-regulators-to-release-fsd-beta-in-europe-says-elon-musk TESLA’S COST PER KWH FOR CELLS FROM SUPPLIERS REVEALED "Tesla sources many of its battery cells from third-party suppliers, like Panasonic, LG Chem, and CATL. Because of the massive rate at which Tesla buys these cells, it is paying significantly less per kilowatt-hour compared to its competitors, according to a new report from Cairn Energy Research Advisors" says Teslarati: "According to Cairn’s research, Tesla pays an average of $142 per kWh for cells purchased from its three previously mentioned suppliers. Meanwhile, companies like GM are paying $169 per kWh, while the industry average runs around $186, according to the firm’s report. Furthermore, Tesla’s packs cost $187 per kWh on average, with GM’s costing $207 per kWh and the industry average being $246 per kWh." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-cells-cost-per-kwh-revealed-gm-competitors-cairn-report/ BP PULSE INVESTS £2 MILLION TO UPGRADE LEGACY CHARGE POINTS "In the UK, bp pulse is pledging to improve the reliability of the UK’s older public charging infrastructure by working with local authorities to upgrade and replace charge points across the country." reports Electrive: "The BP subsidiary – that was given the new name bp pulse incorporating bp Chargemaster and Polar in 2020 – has already agreed to invest over £400,000 in infrastructure for replacing more than 50 charge points. These are mostly owned by local authorities and originally installed over a decade ago with government grant funding under the Plugged in Places scheme. Beyond the upgrading of initial 50 charge points, discussions are already underway to make an additional £750,000 available for legacy charge point owners, which could see over 300 units upgraded. In total, bp pulse has made £2 million available for the endeavour." https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/09/bp-pulse-invests-2-million-to-upgrade-legacy-charge-points/ RIVIAN CEO SHARES HOW ROOMY THE BACK OF THE R1S WILL BE "Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe Tweeted a video of himself surrounded by R1S electric SUVs. In the video, he explains how the second and third-row seats fold down and shares perspective of how much room future drivers will actually have." says Electrek: "In a recent Tweet, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe offers fans of the automaker a glimpse at a posse of R1S SUVs. The video features eight different R1S’ lined up in various colors. Scaringe speaks about how he has been driving the R1S the past couple weeks and has been loving it. He talks about loading up his kids and gear, and even posted along with the video, “Ready for camping!” This certainly fits the theme of outdoor, all-terrain situations the high-performance EV is geared specifically toward. Scaringe admits many people have been curious about how the second and third rows fold flat in the R1S, so he decided to share a demonstration. With the tailgate down, the seats lay seamlessly flat from the second-row headrests, out the EV’s rear." https://electrek.co/2021/03/10/rivian-ceo-shares-how-roomy-the-back-of-the-r1s-will-be/ HYUNDAI ANNOUNCES NEW KONA ELECTRIC PRICES ""The refreshed Hyundai Kona Electric is now on sale, with prices inclusive of the £3,000 government plug-in car grant starting from £30,125. The all-electric SUV has been given a visual refresh, with more technology introduced across the range too" says CarWow: "Opt for a range-topping Ultimate spec, and that rises to £40,375. All cars get a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and equally-sized infotainment system as standard, along with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Adaptive cruise control and keyless entr.y. Upgrade to the 64kWh and that’s paired to a 150kw, 204hp motor. That boosts range up to 300 miles as well. LG CHEM BATTERIES FOR CHINESE MODEL Y "South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd. will supply batteries to US electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc. for its latest mid-size SUV Model Y, to be manufactured in China next year. LG Chem, the world’s largest EV battery maker, has been chosen as the sole supplier for the luxury SUV model, beating strong contenders such as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) and Japan’s Panasonic Corp., according to industry sources on Nov. 20." says The Korea Economic Daily: "Under the latest deal, LG Chem will supply advanced lithium-ion batteries, known as NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) batteries, for the Model Y to be produced at Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai facility in the first quarter of 2021, sources said. CATL, China’s leading battery maker, had been tipped as one of the strongest candidates, but was excluded as a supplier as it focuses on a different, low-cost type of battery, known as LFP (cobalt-free lithium-iron-phosphate). Currently, Tesla uses CATL-made LFP cells for its low-end made-in-China Model 3 sedans, while outsourcing batteries from LG Chem for high-end Model 3 vehicles, also made in China." 2021 could see 360,000 Model Y's produced. 30,000 a month? Well this year LG Chem will have around 100GWh of capacity, which they're planning on being 260GWh by 2023. https://www.kedglobal.com/newsView/ked202011200008 RIVIAN CEO EYES SMALLER EVS FOR CHINA & EUROPE "Rivian, which is backed by Amazon and Ford, on Wednesday said it plans to follow up its first two products, a full-size pickup and SUV, with smaller models targeted at China and Europe where it may eventually build some vehicles. While Rivian plans to begin selling the SUV in Europe in 2022 and China soon after, "what will really drive volume in those markets is the follow-on products" that are smaller and tailored for overseas customers, Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe told Reuters." reports Automotive News Europe: "The company's first plant in Normal, Ilinois, has begun pilot production ahead of next year's launch of three models -- the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, which Scaringe described as "halo products" for Rivian, and a large electric delivery van for Amazon. Scaringe said Rivian has begun setting up service centers and will deploy mobile units to handle maintenance and repair work on Amazon's vans, as well as Rivian vehicles for retail customers." Scaringe said: "To really scale in those markets as we bring on follow-on products, having a production footprint outside the U.S. is going to be important. That's a ways off. We wouldn't be serious about building a car company if we weren't thinking about China and Europe as important markets long term." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/rivian-ceo-eyes-smaller-evs-china-europe GM WILL LAUNCH 30 EVS AROUND THE WORLD BY 2025 "General Motors is leaving no room for doubt as to whether or not it’s dedicated to electrification: the Detroit-based automaker announced today at a conference hosted by British bank Barclays that it is increasing its investment in electric and autonomous technology by $7 billion and will have 30 EVs on the market by 2025. That brings GM’s total EV and autonomous tech investment through 2025 to $27 billion as the automaker moves toward a full-electric lineup." writes Car & Driver: "This increase in planned electric vehicles—up from the 20 slated to hit the market by 2023—GM said, is made possible by the flexible Ultium platform which can be adapted to a variety of different vehicles. That platform can also now give vehicles a range of up to 450 miles, up from the 400 miles which GM claimed at an “EV Day” back in March. Alongside the scaling of EV production, GM expects that the cost of its Ultium batteries will drop by 60 percent by the middle of this decade, bringing the batteries “closer to cost parity with gas-powered engines.”" Cadillac will have the Lyriq which has been moved up by 9 months, Celestiq, GMC's Hummer truck and SUV, new Chevrolet the new Bolt EUV. Interesting fact about the Hummer EV, that will have a development of 26 months down from the usual 50. That means the Chevy Pickup will be moved up 11 months from originally planned and the Chevy Crossover by 21 months. Bearing in mind the Hummer ships late next year - at the moment there is no drivable development vehicle. At this presentation we also got to see the Hummer SUV in the background. At present, Tesla has set up a total of 45 super charging stations and 34 destination charging stations in Beijing, covering the urban core and surrounding popular self-driving routes." repotrs SMM News: "Tesla will build nearly 650 super charging stations, more than 5000 super charging piles and more than 2000 destination charging piles in China, covering more than 270major cities and inter-city connections. In addition, in view of the problem that some Tesla super-charging pile parking spaces are occupied by fuel vehicles, Tesla set up intelligent ground locks or property management personnel in the parking spaces, in which Tesla car owners need to scan the QR code above the parking spaces before charging the car to obtain verification information, which can be "unlocked" after entering the verification information into the APP." https://news.metal.com/newscontent/101322517/Tesla-the-largest-V3-supercharging-station-in-North-China-landed-in-Wangjing-Beijing/ https://twitter.com/teslacn/status/1329059302716235779 https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-china-installed-parking-barrier-to-prevent-ice-occupy-the-superchanger.45088/ TESLA OPENS WORLD’S NORTHERNMOST SUPERCHARGER STATION "Varangerbotn, some 400 kilometers inside the Arctic Circle, is the most faraway location Tesla has turned on the power anywhere on the European continent. The two nearest Supercharger stations are Puoltikasvaara (Sweden), 623 km to the south, and Sørkjosen (Norway) 562 km to the west." says The Barents Observer: "Ten new Supercharger stations inside the Arctic Circle in northern Scandinavia are in the pipe. The network is geographically well distributed throughout the region and the chosen locations are at the main crossroads. As previously reported by The Barents Observer, local power companies in Troms and Finnmark county, with financial support from the Norwegian state, are deploying a network of 17 high-power 175 kW chargers and eight 50 kW fast chargers. Resident Tesla hacker @greentheonly found evidence in Tesla’s 2020.44.5 firmware that possibly indicate an increase in the Model Y’s range next year. " says Teslarati: "According to the trusted hacker, Tesla released an efficiency package for the Model 3 already. It could release a similar efficiency package for the Model Y. The Model Y efficiency package would probably compliment the release of the all-electric crossover’s seven-seater variant. In October, Elon Musk revealed that the Fremont Factory would start production on Model Y’s seven-seat version this month. He predicted that initial seven-seater Model Y deliveries could start as early as December, right in time for Christmas and New Year’s." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-range-update-efficiency-package-2021/ PROTERRA CELEBRATES ITS 1,000TH BATTERY-ELECTRIC BUS "Broward County Transit (BCT) has agreed to purchase 12, 40-foot Proterra® ZX5™ battery-electric transit buses with 660 kWh of onboard energy and the DuoPower™ drivetrain. With this purchase, Proterra has now sold more than 1,000 battery-electric transit buses in North America." write Mass Transit website: "introduced in September, the Proterra ZX5 features more energy storage and a longer drive range. Proterra says the DuoPower drivetrain delivers nearly twice the horsepower and five times better fuel efficiency than a standard diesel engine. The DuoPower drivetrain features two electric motors that deliver a 550 horsepower, accelerating a ZX5 bus from zero to 20 mph in under six seconds." Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says the EV startup is in the process of ramping up production at its Normal, Ill., plant as it prepares to launch three vehicles next year. Plus, he chats about the company's U.S. retail model, partnerships with Amazon and Ford, attracting big investments and creating mobile and physical service centers.
For 40 years, Derek Kaufman has worked in the Transportation Industry with positions ranging from VP Marketing and Product Planning for Freightliner Trucks, SR VP of Sales, Marketing and Customer Support for Hino Trucks, President of Diesel Technology Co, a subsidiary of Penske Corporation, VP of Fixed Operations for Smart USA and CEO of Mission Motors Company. Derek is also an entrepreneur. He founded C3 Network, LLC in 1997 to help clients launch new products in the transportation industry. Today, Derek is a Managing Partner at Schwartz Advisors, LLC doing Mergers & Acquisition support and company growth work in the auto and heavy-duty aftermarket. He continues his role as President of C3 Network. Derek serves on the boards of several companies and is a regular conference speaker at auto aftermarket and trucking conferences. Listen to Derek's previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22derek+kaufman%22) . Talking Points: BEVs or Battery Electric Vehicles have only battery power – no engine at all PHEVs are Plug-in Hybrids – they have battery packs that can be charged from the grid and have enough battery power to propel the vehicle for a certain number of miles before their internal combustion engine kicks in to keep the vehicle moving Mild and Micro Hybrids – these are hybrid vehicles where the ICE engine drives an alternator to build up a battery pack. In mild hybrids, the motors can add power to the ICE power train. In micro hybrids like stop-start systems you have a battery that will drive a starter to bring the ICE engine back on after it stops to save fuel at an intersection. In the USA, about 2.1% of our sales were full BEVs in 2019. To put that in perspective, the number one country in the world for BEV sales was Norway at 49% -- a strong market for Tesla Number 2 was Iceland at 19%, then you fall down 8.2% for number 3 Sweden. China is driving hard for BEVs but they were only at 4.2% last year. It is interesting to note that if California was its own country – and lots of people would say it is – it would be right up with Sweden at over 8% BEV sales in 2019. If you go to San Diego, or sections of LA or the Bay Area – you would think that Tesla has a 30% market share – California is the epicenter of their sales. Our estimate is that only .22% of cars in shops are BEVs today and that only grows to under 4% in the next ten years. The European Union is all in on electric drive – and they are driving the market by imposing a 95 gram per kilometer CO2 emission limit on vehicle manufacturers. You have everyone trying to sell cars in Europe rushing to add BEVs to their product lines even though the consumers in that market are continuing to buy high powered ICEs and even turning now to SUVs. So BEVs are going to be money-losing propositions for a lot of years for OEMs in Europe. The UK just announced a ban on ICE gas and diesel engines as of 2035 – that was pulled up from 2040 France has a ban slated for 2040 – but Paris is blocking ICE cars by 2030 China isn’t doing a nationwide ban but is talking about regional bans – and they are making it really difficult or impossible to build any new ICE production capacity in the country. The US has been lagging other countries for a number of reasons – our geography makes the whole issue of battery range a tougher issue than in a lot of the European countries where you have less chance of even reaching a car’s range limitWe’re a light truck and SUV country – over 70% of new car sales are light trucks in this country so I think the adoption of BEVs will change once those vehicle designs include electric drive. So we’re projecting a slower climb for the USA – the Schwartz Advisors model is showing 16% BEV sales by 2035. Rivian as a true inflection point for BEVs in this country and maybe in the world.R.J. Scaringe in Detroit has done a tremendous job of attracting both people and investment...

AUDI STRUGGLES WITH E-TRON PRODUCTION BECAUSE OF SUPPLIERS "Audi is making some major personnel changes at their Brussels plant, where the e-tron quattro electric SUV is manufactured. The jobs of at least 145 temporary workers are to be put on hold. In the worst case, this lot could threaten up to 250 employees." says Chris at electrive, with info coming from two German articles and one in French: "The Belgian news agency Belga broke the news. The agency cites difficulties of a supplier to deliver parts needed for the installation of the batteries in the electric SUVs as the reason for Audi letting the temps go. The Belgian newspaper L’Echo however, becomes more specific and presumes the supply issue concerns the battery cells and implicates LG Chem in particular. The production of the Audi e-tron in Brussels will, therefore, be reduced by 4,100 to 5,700 vehicles in the first quarter, the report continues." Audi plant spokesman Peter D’hoore: "We are facing an unexpected situation and have taken measures to stabilise supplies" https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/26/audi-makes-personnel-changes-in-brussels-factory/ RIVIAN: EXPECT PRICES LOWER THAN PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED Electric vehicle startup Rivian on Saturday displayed its pickup truck and SUV at an event in San Francisco’s Bay Area and said that when their prices are unveiled soon they will be lower than has been previously announced." says a Reuters report: "Rivian founder and chief executive R.J. LEXUS TO INTRODUCE ITS FIRST BEV MODEL AT THE GUANGZHOU AUTO SHOW "Lexus announced that at the upcoming Guangzhou Auto Show (on November 22) it will unveil its first battery-electric vehicle." reports InsideEVs: "The Japanese brand (part of Toyota) starts with a BEV envisioned for the Chinese and European markets. "Specifically crafted to suit the needs of audiences in China and in Europe, this further advances the brand’s desire to offer a portfolio of electrified powertrain choices for diverse audiences worldwide." The introduction of a BEV was inevitable as the Chinese government requires automakers to collect (or buy) a certain amount of New Energy Vehicles credits." https://insideevs.com/news/381518/lexus-first-bev-model-the-guangzhou/ NASA PLANS ELECTRIC TEST FLIGHTS BY END OF 2020 "NASA presented an early version of its X-57 Maxwell all-electric passenger aircraft. The electric aircraft is based on the Tecnam P2006T twin-engine propeller aircraft, in which the combustion engines have been replaced by 14 electric motors. The first test flight is scheduled for the end of 2020." according to Electrive: "Six smaller motors will be mounted along the leading edge of each wing to improve lift during take-off and landing. The lift propellers will only be activated when required and will be retracted during the flight itself. At the ends of each wing, there is then a larger electric motor for propulsion during the flight at travel height." https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/11/nasa-plans-electric-test-flights-by-end-of-2020/ SKODA OCTAVIA IV IS THE SECOND SKODA MODEL TO BE AVAILABLE AS A PLUG-IN HYBRID For the first time, there is a plug-in-hybrid variant, the SKODA OCTAVIA iV. Following in the footsteps of the SUPERB iV, the OCTAVIA iV is the second SKODA model to be available as a plug-in hybrid. This powertrain features a 1.4 TSI petrol engine delivering 115 kW (156 PS) and a 75-kW electric motor. Together, they produce a total power output of 150 kW. With a capacity of 37 Ah providing 13 kWh, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery allows for an electric range of up to 55 km in the WLTP cycle. TESLA UNVEILS MODEL 3 MADE-IN-CHINA WITH MEDIA TEST DRIVES "Tesla has unveiled its first Model 3 made-in-China at Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai and started to give media test drives of the vehicle. Tesla has been expected to focus on Model 3 production at its Shanghai automotive factory, where it mulls producing as many as 3,000 vehicles per week next year, Teslarati reported recently." and picked up by News18.com Electrek's Take: "As we previously reported, the start of production is going to be a major milestone since it’s going to be the first electric vehicle factory wholly-owned by a foreign automaker in China and Tesla’s second electric vehicle production factory. But beyond that for Tesla, it will open up a larger market for them in China with lower prices and better access to EV incentives." https://electrek.co/2019/11/11/tesla-model-3-made-in-china-media-test-drives/ ALFA ROMEO SCALES BACK ELECTRIFICATION "The Fiat-owned automaker needs to release electrified models to keep up with its German and Japanese rivals, to satisfy demand from buyers, and to remain on the right side of government regulations. While it originally announced plans to electrify six of seven nameplates, its updated product road map outlines two plug-ins out of four models" writes Autoblog: " the Tonale, which was previewed by an eponymous concept car at the 2019 Geneva auto show, and leaked online several weeks later. It will take Alfa Romeo into the plug-in hybrid segment for the first time. The other is a yet-unnamed entry-level soft-roader which will offer an electric powertrain. Both will also come with non-electrified drivetrains. The Giulia and the Stelvio are no longer in line to receive hybrid technology" https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/11/alfa-romeo-electrification-plans-reorganization/ GERMAN TAX ADVANTAGES FOR COMPANY CARS "The German Bundestag today passed the law on further tax incentives for electromobility and changes to other tax regulations." says a translated article on cducsu.de: "If employees drive so-called zero-emission vehicles as company cars and the gross list price of the vehicle does not exceed 40,000 euros, employees will only have to pay 0.25% of the list price in the year " Electrive adds: "The preferential tax treatment for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids introduced in 2018 and initially limited to three years is now to be extended in two stages until 2030: From 2022 to 2024, only electric and hybrid vehicles with a minimum range of 60 km or a maximum CO2 emission of 50 g/km with a purely electric drive will benefit; in the period from 2025 to 2030, the required purely electric minimum range will increase to 80 km." https://www.cducsu.de/themen/wirtschaft-und-energie-haushalt-und-finanzen/steuervorteile-bei-tampons-und-e-autos https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/11/germany-extends-company-car-grant-til-2030/ RIVIAN’S QUAD-MOTOR TORQUE VECTORING SETS HIGH BAR FOR TESLA CYBERTRUCK "Whether or not Tesla can steal electric-truck thunder back from Rivian will be based on a simple metric: how many motors are on board the Cybertruck. By dedicating an individual motor to each wheel, Rivian’s technical design creates an unprecedented potential for torque vectoring." says Brad at Electrek, reporting on the Fully Charged video about Rivian: " gearbox." Here’s what Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe told Fully Charged about the R1T truck: “It can do zero to 60 in three seconds. But what makes the vehicle so unique is the way we’re able to control torque not just front to back but left to right, instantaneously coupled with the ability to adjust to the roll stiffness and damping frequency. You could have a vehicle that instantaneously goes from something that’s incredible off-road to something incredible on the road.” https://electrek.co/2019/11/11/rivians-quad-motor-torque-vectoring-sets-high-bar-for-tesla-cybertruck/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… If you had to pick ONE upside to driving an EV, what would be it be? ASTON MARTIN TO DISPLAY RAPIDE E AT FULLY CHARGED LIVE "Aston Martin confirmed its presence at the upcoming Fully Charged Live event (7-9 June) at the Silverstone Wing complex, with the presentation of the Aston Martin Rapide E for the very first time in the UK." reports InsideEVs: "That not the only good news, as the Rapide E will be joined by the 1970 DB6 Volante mk2 EV, shown by Fully Charged a few months ago, converted to electric drive by Aston Martin Works" Aston Martin Vehicle Line Director John Caress said: “We showcased Rapide E for the first time in Shanghai and we proved what Rapide E can do on the track in Monaco. However, I am now incredibly pleased to be able to display Aston Martin’s first all-electric model here in the UK for the first time this weekend at Fully Charged Live. This event not only highlights the level of interest in alternative technologies within the automotive industry, but also across a broader spectrum, and Rapide E embodies our interpretation of how a luxury sportscar can fit within that world. "The grand merger plan between Renault and Fiat Chrysler, just barely a week old, completely fell apart yesterday evening. It really did come out of nowhere – everything was great and awesome until suddenly everyone put out statements saying the deal was completely dead." says Jalopnik: "But who the hell killed it depends on who you ask. Here’s the Wall Street Journal, with an account blaming increasingly spiteful Renault partner Nissan: With Nissan representatives prepared to abstain if Renault’s board took a vote, the French government asked for more time so that Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire could use an upcoming visit to Japan to press the case for a merger with the Japanese, according to a French official. Complicating the consummation of the deal was the two-decade partnership between Renault and Nissan in which they, along with Mitsubishi Motors Corp., share technology and vehicle parts. Renault owns 43.4% of Nissan, while Nissan owns 15% of Renault. People close to Fiat Chrysler and Renault said for the merger to succeed it needed Nissan’s buy-in, in part because the Japanese company co-owns some of the intellectual property that underpins the alliance." Or was it neither Nissan nor Renault, but actually the state of France itself? Here’s Reuters: The French government, which has a 15% stake in Renault, had welcomed the merger plan, but overplayed its hand by pushing for a series of guarantees and concessions that eventually exhausted the patience of FCA, sources familiar with the talks said. Wrong-footed by FCA’s decision to withdraw its merger proposal late on Wednesday, a French official called FCA Chairman John Elkann early on Thursday to see if he might reconsider, but was rebuffed, one of the sources said. https://jalopnik.com/what-the-hell-happened-between-renault-and-fiat-chrysle-1835295448 RIVIAN R1T AND R1S WILL FEATURE VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE CHARGING "Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently shared some new insights about the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV in an interview with auto publication The Drive. During his interview, Scaringe discussed Rivian’s battery technology" writes Simon from Teslarati: "Scaringe noted that the company is preparing solutions that will enable drivers to recharge their vehicles off the grid, such as auxiliary battery packs. The CEO also added that the company would allow vehicle-to-vehicle charging, allowing two Rivians to charge each other. “We’ve designed the vehicle so you can have auxiliary battery packs. You can also charge Rivian-to-Rivian, which is a neat thing. You connect the two vehicles, and then I could hand you some electrons,” Scaringe said." https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-r1t-r1s-vehicle-to-vehicle-charging/ TOYOTA AND SUBARU AGREE TO JOINTLY DEVELOP BEV-DEDICATED PLATFORM AND BEV SUV Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Subaru Corporation (Subaru) disclosed today that they have agreed to jointly develop a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for midsize and large passenger vehicles and to jointly develop a C-segment-class BEV SUV model for sale under each company's own brand. By combining their respective strengths, such as the all-wheel-drive technologies that Subaru has cultivated over many years and the vehicle electrification technologies that Toyota is employing to bring together other companies that share its aspirations, the two companies intend to take up the challenge of creating attractive products with appeal that only BEVs can offer. https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/28377766.html MOTOR TREND SAYS TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE AWD IS FASTER THAN YOU THINK Stephen Loveday for InsideEVs says: "We welcome Motor Trend's (MT) first official test review of the Tesla Model 3 Long Range dual motor all-wheel-drive sedan. According to the publication: "It's the fourth-quickest sedan we've ever tested behind the Model S P100D Ludicrous (2.3 seconds to 60 mph), Porsche Panamera (2.8), BMW M5, and Mercedes-AMG E 63 S (tied at 3.0), each one of which is all-wheel drive." MT admits that all-wheel drive has not always been the go-to when it comes to sports cars. It adds extra weight and simply may not be needed in most sports-car-driving situations. However, with instant all-electric torque, superb traction control, and excellent road grip, it can be a desirable option, "especially for heavier cars." https://insideevs.com/reviews/353342/tesla-model-3-long-range-awd-quick/ VOLKSWAGEN PLANS 36,000 CHARGING POINTS Volkswagen is aiming for a rapid breakthrough for e-mobility and is redoubling its efforts in the field of charging infrastructure. Throughout Europe, the Group will be installing a total of 36,000 charging points by 2025; 11,000 of these are to be developed by the Volkswagen brand. They will be installed at Volkswagen plants and at about 3,000 Volkswagen dealerships in all large towns and cities. With its Group company for charging infrastructure Elli (Electric Life) and its charging service “We Charge”, Volkswagen is also moving into further lucrative business areas connected with charging. All in all, the Group is investing about €250 million at its European locations. At the same time, the Group calls for other measures to take effect rapidly for more charging stations in Germany. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2019/06/36,000_charging_points_for_electric_cars.html Question of the Week. John Scaringe has been serving as President for the Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) for nine years. He began his career at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) as faculty in 1991. In addition to private practice and over 25 years of teaching experience, Dr Scaringe has developed a reputation in change management and is a frequent lecturer on academic leadership and trends in healthcare education. In this episode we discuss the state of professional integrative health education. The Southern California University of Health Sciences began as the Los Angeles Chiropractic College. It later absorbed a college of traditional Chinese Medicine and recently added a Physician Assistants program. With this move, SCU is working to fully integrate western allopathic medicine and the complementary modalities of chiropractic and Chinese medicine. In addition SCU has certificate programs in massage therapy, Ayurvedic medicine and health and wellness coaching. Dr. Scaringe is a true leader in integrative medicine, setting up a medicine of the future where MDs, PA’s, chiropractors and other practitioners can work together seamlessly. Following the interview with Dr. Scaringe, Ricky does a solo reflection on one of the greatest challenges for students entering the health care field…debt. The obscene load that these students face is a major obstacle to going into the field as well as a burden on society at large. Link: https://youtu.be/t5j4BjRlAOw
You may have seen that Daily Detroit recently made its Detroit Public Television debut with a profile of Rivian, the electric vehicle maker that caught the automotive world by surprise last fall when it unveiled its high-powered, battery-electric pickup truck and SUV. For today’s episode, we’re following up on our promise to give you more from our visit to Rivian’s Plymouth Township headquarters. We have more from my interview with the company’s founder and CEO, R.J. Scaringe, including how the company is founded and why he’s confident they can clear the hurdles and start manufacturing their vehicles. Rivian is now taking orders on both the R1T pickup, which is slated for delivery to customers in late 2020, and the R1S SUV, which delivers in 2021. The former starts at $69,000, or $61,500 after federal electric-vehicle tax credits, while the latter starts at $72,500 ($65,000). In the meantime, enjoy the photos from our visit. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 28th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. And welcome to the Patreon gang RAJEEV NARAYAN. “My daughter and I love your podcast, I have been listening almost daily for almost a year. My own personal EV story started in September of 2017, after Hurricane Harvey caused a shortage of gasoline here in San Antonio, Texas. I had been looking at EVs for a while, but the long gas lines prompted me to go to my local Chevrolet Dealer and buy a Chevy Bolt. I drive about 80 miles a day as a physician to multiple hospitals and clinics and so having an EV really helped me get around and take care of patients. I now have over 41,000 miles on the vehicle and love it. My daughter is learning to drive, and I have just bought her a Chevy Volt this month.” BMW I4 SPIED: IT'S THE TESLA MODEL 3-RIVALLING ELECTRIC FAMILY COUPE CAR magazine here in the UK have some pictures of a car carrier with some BMW's in camouflage and one of them is what they say is the new BMW i4. "The sleek, low-slung i Vision Dynamics concept from 2017 was a four-door Gran Coupe-style family car previewing the third i model. BMW said it was capable of 0-62mph in four seconds, a top speed of 120mph and an electric, zero-emissions range of up to 373 miles - figures we'd wager sound remarkably feasible for a production EV two years away from showrooms." says Tim Pollard for CAR Magazine: "Note also the faked exhaust pipes built into the camo at the rear, to put our spy photographers off the scent. Although this is rather undone by the 'Electric vehicle' stickers required by law in Germany in case of a high-voltage accident." Tim continues: "The production-spec i4 saloon will use two electric motors, all-wheel drive and torque vectoring. There’s also potential for rear-wheel steering and semi-active air suspension. It’s likely that BMW will follow Tesla’s lead in offering different versions with a choice of power outputs. In fact, the hotter version could even carry an M performance division badge." As with all auto makers selling cars in Europe, 2020 is the date when new emissions rules kick in. Even if they could sell it this year, I'd think they would build up demand and hold off any deliveries until 2020. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/bmw/i4/ VW BOSS: TESLA CONTROLS 50% OF EV MARKET, WE’RE AIMING FOR THE REST In a Motortrend article talking to Scott Keogh, VW of America CEO.: "Making Volkswagen matter is a North America strategy. We have 20 points of share in China and 15 points in Europe. We have 2 points here. We're going to operate as a company that matters and is ethical, and we're moving into EVs, and hopefully we'll get that redemption." As for how electric cars might be shared or used for car-sharing: "When you look at the total car market, there are projections that ride-share and alternatives will peel off 3 to 4 million cars. We're not seeing that. Car-sharing has had a huge impact on taxis and medallions but no impact on purchases. As a brand, there are huge opportunities. We have an honest product at an honest price, and transparency. That's why we're looking at third-party mobility and retail solutions. All-inclusive leases are something we're looking at." On the subject of EV's in China: "There is no debate China will be the explosive EV market. And they need a lot of EVs due to congestion, smog, and autonomy. They missed 20th century auto. They want to win 'new auto'—EV, autonomous, connected. The situation for the U.S., from chips to sensors, for the most part, they are developed here. We need policies that build off that tech, that push innovation and change. As an American in America, it would be a shame to lose that opportunity." And finally, the 'T' Word: "We are arriving with a proper VW at a VW price, at a time when market sentiment and reaction and consumer sentiment is building. We're at equal footing. We have scale advantage. It won't just be the one product. It will be a host of products. We have a good cadence. Right now market share is 50 percent Tesla and 50 percent everyone else. Who is going to win the other 50 percent? That breakthrough product has not arrived yet." https://www.motortrend.com/news/volkswagen-ceo-scott-keogh-interview/ THE STORY OF RIVIAN "Now a decade old, Rivian was known as Avera when it started. Search hard in Google and you’ll find a cryptic teaser image of the Avera coupé under blue covers, never to be revealed. And it never has gone public – until now. " says Mark Tishaw for Autocar today: "Rivian is 10 years old and has never made a car, but does have its cars designed, engineered and ready to go, plus an ex-Mitsubishi factory being readied to build them in. Crucially, Rivian is also well funded through investors, who have backed the U-turns Scaringe has performed with the company’s direction." Rivian’s founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe: "You look at the costs for a car company – you need huge capital, a large team, and everything costs,” he says. “You need many hundreds of suppliers and then a product to attract customers – and then you need time. Even if you had everything in place at the start, it’d take four or five years. It’s challenging. We started a company with none of those things.” "In a world of disruptive start-ups, Rivian’s lips-sealed approach has also been unique. Nothing leaked, or was ‘teased’. It still has significant hurdles to overcome between now and the end of next year when production starts, including converting the Mitsubishi factory to a Rivian one." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/how-i-started-my-own-car-firm-story-rivian FORMULA 1 CHAMPION NICO ROSBERG TURNS HIS ATTENTION TO ELECTRIC MOBILITY CleanTechnica has the lowdown on Nico Rosberg being a cheerleader for EVs: "Speaking at Davos, in Switzerland, at the World Economic Forum — where global leaders decide on the future for the rest of the world — Nico is making sure anyone with ears heeds the message. He added that everything’s going electric, even Formula 1 at some point will have to. Nico’s plan is simple: Bring electric mobility to the mass. He’s doing this by taking over his father’s 20-year-old company. Nico has also invested in the Formula E series, Uber, and SpaceX. He will announce his own EV startup in the next two weeks and will reportedly focus on green technologies and the events industry. The company is backed with his own money, as well as with partners from the traditional mobility industry." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/27/formula-1-champion-nico-rosberg-turns-his-attention-to-electric-mobility-as-angel-investor/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Episode 16. Stephen Baker and RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian, an electric car startup, sat down at LA CoMotion to discuss how the consumption model for cars will evolve over the next decades. RJ calls Rivian the “Patagonia” of electric cars - a comfortable vehicle encouraging customers to go out and explore the world. The car’s smart battery can learn from its user and adjust to his preferred charging mode in real-time. RJ Scaringe believes that as we move away from an exclusive consumption ownership model for cars, we will adopt more use-case specific modes of consumption.
