The AI revolution doesn't have to feel overwhelming for small business owners. In this enlightening conversation with branding expert Phil Palin, we explore how entrepreneurs can harness artificial intelligence as a productivity tool rather than viewing it as a threat to their business.Phil brings a refreshing perspective as someone who wears two professional hats – running a branding agency for 14 years and working as a content creator with nearly 400 YouTube videos under his belt. His journey into content creation happened almost accidentally when a client commented on how entertaining his tutorial videos were, eventually leading to partnerships with over 100 brands, including Adobe. The heart of our discussion centers on practical AI implementation strategies that won't leave you feeling like you're racing against time. "I get irked when people say if you don't jump on the AI bandwagon now, you're going to be too late," Phil explains. "I just don't think there is a too late." This permission to approach AI at your own pace sets the tone for a conversation focused on sustainable integration rather than panic-driven adoption. We dive deep into Phil's actual workflow for using AI tools, revealing the critical missing step many entrepreneurs overlook – providing sufficient input before expecting quality output. Speaking from experience, Phil shares how this approach has allowed him to preserve his unique voice while doubling his hourly rate in some instances. His advice on navigating AI tools while protecting intellectual property and creating an "avoid words" list to prevent cringey AI-generated content offers immediate value you can implement today.Perhaps most reassuringly, Phil addresses the fear of AI replacing human jobs, citing research that shows 63% of jobs are actually complemented by AI rather than threatened by it. "I'm the conductor and I still have to conduct the symphony, but I don't have to play every instrument," he explains, perfectly capturing how AI can enhance human capabilities without diminishing our essential role in business.Ready to explore how AI can serve your business? I think you're in for a treat today! I've got Phil Pallen and Phil is- well, first of all, good day, Phil. Welcome! Good day from down under. Whereabouts are you hanging out because I believe you are a man of many cities? Phil Pallen 00:27 That is always a question. No one asked me how I am and asked where I am! Today I'm going to Lisbon, Portugal. Tom Poland 00:33 And where else do you inhabit? Florida somewhere? Phil Pallen 00:38 Yeah, I'm Canadian but based in the US, but I've been digitally nomading for over five years well before the pandemic, so this is what I'm used to. Tom Poland 00:48 Oh, that sounds like fun! Pandemic aside. For those of you who don't know Phil, his stuff is frickin awesome! I had a look at his website. I was blown away! He's a personal branding expert. He's a keynote speaker. His non-conventional approach and- you just got to go to his website, folks, and have a look at it. We'll give the URL in a moment. His non-conventional approach to digital marketing and talent for social media just sets him apart! He's built a global audience. We're fortunate to have him on the show. Phil, thank you again for being here. The title is, “How Branding Can Be Your Secret Weapon”. Phil's going to show us how that can become a reality in your business in less than seven minutes. Phil, our time starts now. Sir, question number one, who is your ideal client? Phil Pallen 01:31 Sure. I appreciate that amazing intro! My ideal client is a busy working professional. I'd say usually women, probably three women to one man, but my site gives a good kind of window into that. They're busy working professionals that have achieved the majority of their success on their own. They've reached a point where it's really helpful to have some outside input to navigate that next step. Tom Poland 01:58 How would you- question two, six and a half minutes left. How would you define the problem that you solve for these professionals? Phil Pallen 02:05 Yeah, so the problem is, I'd say, uncertainty on what to do next. Because my client's very unique personal branding means that they are the brand. They are the product. Because it's them, they're too close to it. The purpose that I serve is I hold a mirror in front of them, and I say, “Look, this is who you are. This is how it looks. Here's what I'm seeing. And also, what I've learned from helping over 300 people like you. Here's what I think we need to do to get to the next step. And here's-“. You know, it's a collaboration. It's not just me telling them what to do. But I really hold that mirror for them. That's how I solve the problem. Tom Poland 02:45 And there are a few things. I mean, I guess, collaboration, kind of like a dance. You're both bringing something to the party, so to speak. But they're working with your experience, but with their personality, with their vision, with their ethics, with their values. But as a recipe, mixing your experience with theirs together– some of the stuff is just magical. And you're really- Phil Pallen 03:04 Thank you! Tom Poland 03:04 Taking their uniqueness- this is what I noticed from your website, their uniqueness, and their professionalism, and making the book cover, so to speak, look as good as what's actually in the book. That's my take on it, you know. So, they've probably had- Phil Pallen 03:19 Yes! I love how you described that. Tom Poland 03:20 Brilliant with what they do, but haven't always had the book cover to match it. And how do we judge a book? By its cover, right? Should we? Probably not, but we do! And you solve that problem. So, let's have a look at question number three, five minutes left. What are some of the typical symptoms of this problem? How does someone know they need more of what you've got? Phil Pallen 03:40 Oh, sure. I'm going to piggyback off of what you just said. And I think the symptom, the most typical symptom is unawareness that they've evolved as a business owner, as a professional in real life. But that evolution has not happened online. Someone will go to their website, and it doesn't quite communicate all of the exciting things that are happening now. I'm a big believer that personal branding really is the art of achieving consistency between who you are and how you show up online or, you know, in person and making sure that evolution happens online. Absolutely! That's a symptom. Tom Poland 04:20 Are you quite fussy about who you take on as a client? Phil Pallen 04:23 Yes. I am definitely fussy. Tom Poland 04:23 I know that's not on the list of questions I gave you, but I just imagined, just looking at your work, it looks to me like you're taking on people that you feel are genuinely going to be a fit. Phil Pallen 04:32 Yeah, I really need people to let me do my job. So, I don't take on a client that's going to just start to bark orders. They're better to work with a graphic designer. That's a lot less expensive. My best work, the ones that end up, Tom, on my website are people that trust me from the beginning. They're people that I'm so aware of and trusting that they're going to let me do my job. Tom Poland 04:56 Right. And on the other hand, they're not so passive that you don't get anything from them. As you said before, it's like you're bringing something to the party. Nice! Phil Pallen 05:03 Yeah, they have to care! Tom Poland 05:04 Yeah, care and contribute, and so on. But okay, cool. So that explains why there's such consistent, and I don't want to, you know, over-stroke your ego, if that's possible. But that looks like it's such a consistent theme of brilliance coming through in- Phil Pallen 05:20 Thanks. Tom Poland 05:21 In the profiles of the individuals on your website. We will get to the URL in a moment, folks. I know you're keen to get there. What would you say- Phil, question number four, and we've got three minutes left. What would you say is one or two of the common mistakes that people make when they're wanting to solve the personal branding challenge? Phil Pallen 05:37 Yes, very simple. When I approach this process, position your brand, build something to show for it, and then stick the “for sale” sign up in front of the house and promote it, the mistake that people make is they jump too quickly to that final stage. They try and stick a “for sale” sign up in front of a house that doesn't have a roof, which means they're only going to get a fraction of the value that they deserve. Tom Poland 06:01 So, what does it look like in commercial terms in their business? Like a new website without doing the branding first? Is that the sort of thing you're in? Phil Pallen 06:09 Absolutely! Yeah, it could be not really going through the thorough process of positioning their brand, really being aware of what is something I love to do, and how my positioning appeals to what people need. I throw all the visual components photography, color, typography, all of that! You know, stick old photos. It's like putting old wrapping paper on a new gift. So really my process is very thorough and set so that we get that end product. Tom Poland 06:39 Streamlined. Thank you for that! Question five, 90 seconds left, so I better shut up. One valuable free tip. A top tip someone could take, not going to solve the problem, but it might start them in the right direction. Phil Pallen 06:50 Sure! I'm going to reiterate the process that people should follow regardless of industry. Position your brand. So that's a combination of what is something you love paired with something others need. Build something to show for it. Step two, photography, brand identity, website. Finally, promote! Stick a “for sale” sign up for that house, that social media content strategy. SEO, anything you do to get in front of the right people! Tom Poland 07:16 Excellent outline! Thank you. So, let's help folks with this. I'm going to answer question number six for the sake of time. A valuable free resource to folks to help you with all of that. Go to Philpallen, P-A, double L, E-N, .co/freebies. There are pages of amazing stuff to help you on your way there! Phil, last question, sir. 34 seconds left. What's the one question I should have asked you but didn't? Phil Pallen 07:41 Oh gosh, I actually did not prepare for this one. The one question you should have asked me? I don't know, Tom. You've done a really good job of asking questions. The one thing you haven't done is a good job of not talking a lot. You keep asking more questions that are not on the list. I'm trying to give you short answers, Tom! And then you're like, “But what about this?” Tom Poland 08:00 Guilty as charged! Phil Pallen, thank you so much for your inspiration and your insights. Cheers, everyone! Phil Pallen 08:05 Thank you. I really enjoyed this! Tom Poland 08:07 Thank you. Bye. Check out these episode highlights: 01:31 - Phil's ideal client: “My ideal client is a busy working professional. I'd say usually women, probably three women to one man, but my site gives a good kind of window into that. They're busy working professionals that have achieved the majority of their success on their own.” 02:05 - Problem Phil helps solve: “So the problem is, I'd say uncertainty on what to do next. Because my client's very unique personal branding means that they are the brand. They are the product. Because it's them, they're too close to it.” 03:40 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Phil: “I'm gonna piggyback off of what you just said. And I think the symptom, the most typical symptom is unawareness that they've evolved as a business owner, as a professional in real life. But that evolution has not happened online.” 05:37 - Common mistakes that people make before they find Phil's solution: “When I approach this process, position your brand, build something to show for it, and then stick the "for sale" sign up in front of the house and promote it, the mistake that people make is they jump too quickly to that final stage.” 06:50 - Phil's Valuable Free Action (VFA): “I'm going to reiterate the process that people should follow regardless of industry. So that's a combination of what is something you love paired with something others need.” 07:16 - Phil's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Phil's Website: Philpallen.co/freebies Tweetable Takeaways from this Episode: “Personal branding really is the art of achieving consistency between who you are and how you show up online, or in-person, and making sure that evolution happens online.” -Phil PallenClick To Tweet Transcript (Note, this was transcribed using a transcription software and may not reflect the exact words used in the podcast) Tom Poland 00:10 Greetings, everyone, and a very warm welcome to another edition of Marketing the Invisible. In this episode: [07:06] Phil describes the 7 types of rest: physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social, and lastly, spiritual rest. [19:06] How using these types of rest can help your brain regroup and reset for new thoughts and ideas [20:32] Diversifying your income and being able to give yourself a small safety net from passive income [26:00] Creative outlets that can create income opportunity [28:12] Setting boundaries with your clients and why that's important [30:00] Scripts and pricing strategies for working with clients based projects and/or on time spent KEY TAKEAWAYS: Rest for our body and brain is necessary to create fresh new thoughts and ideas Plant seeds with your ideas and stay consistent. Things don't always happen overnight- but can become a success over time. Diversifying your income and creating new revenue streams isn't something that will happen overnight but can be something that will come to fruition in the future for you- it's important to keep working on it. Branding is important for all of our businesses. It's one of the main way we communicate the story of what we do. In this episode of The Blogger Genius Podcast, I'm interviewing brand strategist, Phil Pallen, to talk about new ways of thinking about branding. We talk about the value of showing up authentically, being an expert in your niche (and the value of picking a clear niche), providing value to your audience, and giving your audience a behind the scenes look at what you do. We also talk about the importance of showing up, even when it's tough, iterating on what you offer, and most importantly... being something to someone, rather than everything to everyone. Phil is a fun guest. If you need new ideas. If you like this episode please subscribe to get all my future episodes. The customer journey has changed a lot in recent years. It now often starts on social media, usually on mobile, with bitesize, snackable content…and eventually we want people to consume our longer form content and start buying from us. Should YouTubers care about being a "brand"? Will Branding help in getting us better brand deals?Phil Pallen, international branding specialist to the stars and celebs, join us and shares his process for standing out from the crowd. Full show notes and links are right here: https://vidiq.com/blog/post/branding-for-youtube-creators-tubetalk-161How Important is Branding for a YouTube Creator?Everyone defines branding differently, which makes it a valid question to ask, and a potentially confusing one to understand or to answer. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says your brand is what people say about you when you're not in the room, whereas my definition is a combination of things: branding is your control over the first impression you give others online, and the best branding re-creates the in-person experience. There should be nothing artificial about it. All we're trying to do is take what makes you in real life so great, and re-create that on the web, so it feels like technology is not so much sitting in the way between you and me. Very simple. If you're a YouTuber or if you have some sort of an online personality, whether that’s on Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, whatever the platform is, it's you, and you have to remove any of those barriers between you and the audience. It's much easier to connect with someone in real life than it is online. People who understand YouTube or understand social media as a means of growth, who are building a base or becoming an influencer are amazing, because it's much harder to do that online than it is to do it in person.Phil confirms that the resource that YouTuber’s are chasing is people's time and attention span. Building out your brand based on your personality then becomes your competitive advantage. It's your secret sauce.Humans love familiarity and routine. How can we inject personality into everything we do so that it feels more familiar and exciting? That's what anyone who's had success on YouTube, they are masters at that. They are masters in keeping us coming back for more, and wanting more, and making us feel like we know you even though, honestly, we'll probably never meet you in real life. If we do, great, but it's that ability to re-create the in-person experience. How to Brand Yourself on YouTubeThe prospect of branding yourself on YouTube can be overwhelming but Phil’s advice is to either re-visit the positioning, or start from scratch. Sometimes people are building a brand new idea, concept, a product, a service from scratch. That's great. Or we're taking something that already exists and re-visiting the positioning. The most important thing is looking at your goals. What is it you're trying to achieve? You’ve got to be crystal clear on what your goals are. Phil’s formula is to pair up something you love to do with something others need and are willing to spend money on. Because if it's something they need and they're willing to pay for, then you're going to have a lot easier time growing and marketing yourself without having to actually pay to get eyeballs to you.Branding is all about your overall image. It's what you want to achieve, where do you want to be, what's the road map to get there, will they spend money and buy your stuff, whatever that stuff is? This is all part of the branding process. Even if you’re building a YouTube channel or a brand around a hobby, Phill thinks it's incredibly important to think of yourself as a business - and every good business satisfies a need.Leave us a review and subscribe in your favorite podcast app so you don't miss our TubeTalk episodes every week!Any questions or comments? feel free to email me Liron@vidIQ.com

If you think that you need a million followers on Instagram in order to get the attention of brands, you are wrong. In today’s episode, we are going to talk about how to get the attention of your dream brands, even if your following is on the smaller side by getting more Instagram Story Views. If you have been procrastinating on Instagram, I want you to get started. It is the hottest new player on the social media block and brands want you there engaging with your audience. If you think that IG is all about showing your perfect pictures and how together you are, think again. The beautiful thing about Instagram is all the different features available. Yes, your regular feed needs to be more curated but Stories is where you have the opportunity to be yourself. Stories give you the opportunity to share more of who you are and it gives your audience the opportunity to get to know you better and to decide whether they like you or not.Wait, Jenny...don’t I want everyone to like me?No! Listen to the episode I did with Phil Pallen on what is branding to hear why you definitely want to repel some people while attracting others. Yes, you actually want to repel some people. INTRO We are in the midst of coaching sessions and a lot of our discussions are centered around the importance of branding. Branding is a way of identifying your business. It is how your customers recognize and experience your business. A strong brand is more than just a logo; it's reflected in everything from your customer service, business cards, website, social media, marketing materials and advertising. As our coach Phil Pallen says “A personal brand isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity”. A. Behind the scenes of your brand a) Who are you trying to attract? Who are your ideal clients? The kind of people you want to work with? Who is the type of person who needs your services? Who do you want to work with? What are they like? What do they like? How can you position yourself to attract those people? b) Your Qualities: Why should people work with you? How are you different than others in your business? What are your strengths? Weaknesses? What type of projects do you want to work on? What makes you stand out? B. Phil’s philosophies about lifestyle branding: a) Use Social Media to promote your brand: The ones who get social media understand that their customers want something beyond a product or a service. These people are aspirational. They want an extension of the brand that feels relatable and not salesy. The best brands on social media are the ones that make you forget you’re even on a company social account – until you find yourself purchasing that product or checking into their services. C. Our favorite brands: a. Apple a. Innovative b. Sleek c. Awesome Customer experience d. Packaging b. Anthropologie a. Curated mix of clothing and accessories b. Fun gifts and home décor c. Fashionable and artsy c. The Four Seasons Hotels a. You’re not a number –you are known by name b. Again, the customer experience. A great story on the “Think Blog” “A busboy who worked for the Four Season told countless stories about how important the customer experience played out. A bartender once sent him to a corner bar to pick up a six pack of Rolling Rock even though it wasn’t on their beer menu. He knew a doorman who jumped in a cab to return a lost teddy bear to a kid at the airport. People spoke of the Room Service waiter who borrowed blueberries from another hotel at 3AM because they ran out. He was once sent out to get an emergency case of cranberry Perrier* and keep it in the back of the walk-in because someone heard it was Cher’s favorite. She stayed for over a week, but she never ordered it.” D. Interior design brands: a. IKEA i. Recognizable – Yellow/Blue Color j. Low Price k. No other store like it b. Jonathan Adler – Happy Chic i. Colorful Patterns ii. Classic Design with current trends iii. Happy chic words – sophisticated, lively, vibrant E. Important aspects – stay consistent a. Logo b. Typography c. Color F. Where to use it: a. Website b. Blog c. All Social Media d. Email Signature e. Business card f. Advertising
“The only exciting thing celebrity has is the privilege of platform.” To build something from this privilege, you need to understand your personal brand. Show business and personal branding are two topics Phil Pallen is uniquely qualified to talk about. And that’s exactly what we did on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. Enjoy! About Phil Pallen Phil Pallen is a brand and social media strategist and regular contributor for international media outlets, including CNN, Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, the Toronto Star, and the Daily Mail, Phil breaks down the business of branding and social media into tangible steps that anyone can do. Phil has since spoken at major conferences like Finland’s Arctic15, Japan’s iMedia Brand Summit, and HubSpot’s InBound Conference in Boston. Episode Highlights “You totally have a brand, babe.” That’s Phil’s reply when confronted with what he hears all too often from would-be personal brands — “I don’t even have a brand.” Wrong! You have a brand. But you may not be able to see it. The first part is content and the second part is personality. You can’t have one without the other. Especially, the second part. “Your personality is your secret sauce.” The three steps of personal branding. First, you have to position. Then you have to build something. Then, and only then, can you promote. Trying to promote before positioning and building is like trying to sell a house without understanding the features. How do you know if you’ve built a strong personal brand? “You have control over that first impression.” If the first thing people find when they search for you online is strong and a touch point you control, you’re on your way! Your personal brand is the best business tool for managing who you are and what you stand for. “If you can’t answer what your (personal) brand is, there’s one question that everyone can answer. If you won the lottery, what would you do tomorrow?” What brand has made Phil smile recently? Casper Mattresses provided Phil with a perfect hangover cure. Wait — what? You’ll have to listen to the podcast to get the story on this one. To learn more, go to Phil’s business site, his speaking site, and check out his podcast — The Brand Therapy Podcast.
