Defense wins championships. It's the most cliche phrase in football (alongside it's a game of inches). This episode we compare two of the greatest defenses of the latest 20 years, the Legion of Boom Seahawks with the 2000s Ravens. The LOB, or Legion of Boom, were different in the fact that they were spearheaded by their DBs, specifically Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor. With a pair of Linebackers in KJ Wright and Bobby Wagner, and a cast of solid rushers led by Michael Bennet, they had talent at all 11 positions and all 3 levels, which led to a great defense. Their best year was probably 2013 where they won the super bowl and picked off nearly twice as many passes as touchdowns allowed through the air in the regular season. In their 3-5 year run, they went to back to back Super Bowls and won one of them, demolishing one of the most statically proficient scoring offenses in the 2013 Broncos. The Ravens defense's best year statistically was 2000, where they won the Super Bowl and were led by a young Ray Lewis and a veteran Rod Woodson. We take a look at their entire 2000s run though, as Ed Reed was drafted in 2002 and Terell Suggs in 2003 to complete a 3 headed monster that collected 4 Defensive Player of the Year Awards in 12 years (2 by Ray, 1 for Reed and Suggs each) in that span of dominance. 2 Super Bowls in 2 appearances 11 years apart isn't bad either.But who was better? It's always hard to compare eras, but looking at the way they were built (Ravens with HOFs at each level that were all first round picks), vs. the LOB (many of them draft steals on their rookie contracts and a team defense that gelled well) it provides for a fun comparison. Derrick Rose, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Tracy McGrady. What do these 4 dynamic and exciting players have in common? Injuries robbed them of their potential, limiting what they could have accomplished. NBA FINALS are set!Suns vs. Clippers (Suns win 4-2)Won game 5 due to extremely impressive Paul George showing (40+ on 75% shooting), but no Kawhi for entire series proved to be death sentence. People will detract from Suns because they've faced injured superstars (AD missed 2.5 games out of 6 games, Jamal Murray and Kawhi missed the entire series), but they still played well and confident.Shot the ball well, kept offense running without CP3 when he missed 2 games due to Covid, and was the only team who won multiple games in each series with Devin Booker playing poorly or having a balanced attack. They are 4-2 when he has 21 or less. Giannis and Trae need to have 25+ for their teams to have a chance at winning and the Suns can beat you with 5 people in double digits, or Paul leading the way like he did in the closeout games of DEN and LAC.Bucks vs. Hawks (Bucks win 4-2)Game 4 was big. No Trae Young. Hawks punched the Bucks in the mouth in the 2nd quarter, then Giannis got hurt and the Hawks immediately went on 13-1 run to blow game open, putting Bucks down 20. Giannis had that bad knee injury and missed the rest of the series!!! Hawks cruise to 22 point victory at home tying series at 2-2.Game 5 was different story. Brook Lopez established his dominance in the paint, dropping 33 and 7 and some monster slams, playing the Giannis role in the pick and roll to a T.  True holiday was smooth as ever creating offense, dropping 25 and 13 dimes, and even though the Hawks made the final score look closer than it was (Bucks win by 11), the game was solidly in Bucks' control the entire time. Giannis misses game 5 and Trae Young it as well so the others had to step up.Game 6 in ATL. Trae Young comes back but did NOT play well. 4-17 shooting (0-6 from deep), and he finishes with 14 points, 9 dimes, and 5 TO's. Giannis missed game 6 as well but Khris Middleton had a stretch where he had 23 in 3rd quarter to help keep the lead near 20. ATL made a late run in 4th thanks to Cam Reddish (21 points, 6-7 from deep, mostly all in 2nd half), but they never got it down to less than 8 as they couldn't buy a stop. Offensive rebounds (12 for Bucks) and timely corner threes from Connaughton and PJ Tucker (who was only 1-7 from deep but hit one late in 4th to put a dagger in it) was the sealing fate. In this episode we'll recap how the conference finals are looking mid-way through it! Suns vs. Clippers (Suns up 3-1)Game 2 was a CLASSIC! PG13 and Booker both with 30+ at the end of 3. Booker breaks his nose , comes back and struggles in 4th. Late game though him and Paul George trade potential game winners. BUT, Booker turns it over with 8 seconds left down 1 and then PG13 misses both free throws off the intentional foul. Game ends with a buzzer beating dunk off an inbound lob from Crowder to Ayton. Clippers come back home in a MUST win down 0-2. Do so comfortably off great shooting and never really got threatened. Only storyline here was CP3 returns and looks rusty.Game 4 was a throwback slugfest, with a final score of 84-80 Suns. Everyone shot poorly, but Suns gritted one out. Ayton finishes with 19 points and 22 boards (9 offensive).Still no Kawhi this series and ruled out for game 5. Likely done for playoffs, but not confirmed yet, still officially day to day.Bucks vs. Hawks (Bucks up 2-1) Hawks stole game 1 due to atrocious Bucks pick and roll defense and Trae Young's 48 points, 11 dimes, and 7 boards! First home loss in this year's playoffs for the Bucks and the Hawks have won game 1 in every series (all on the road)Bucks rebound massively, building a 41 point first half lead at one point and cruising to a 30+ win at home.Series shifts to Atlanta, and the Hawks start strong (15-2) but Bucks answer, ending first half tied at 56. Trae Young had 32 at the end of 3 before hurting his ankle on the ref. That and Middleton catching fire (20 of his 38 on the 4th) turned the game around and Bucks regain home court advantage.Trae Young a game-time decision for Game 4.We also discuss some of the recent coaching hires around the league and how that could change the way impending free agency turns out. We preview the conference finals matchups (got a sneak peak at Game1 between Clippers and Suns). Elimination Game RecapClippers erase a  25 point second half deficit in game 6 to advance to WCF and win 4 straight games against Jazz (2 without Kawhi!).Terrance Mann showed up! Had 10 of the first 12 Clippers points, and then continued to show out. Finished with 39 on 15 of 21 shooting! Paul George finishes with 28, 9 boards, and 7 dimes and Reggie Jackson also came through with 27 and 10 dimes.39, 9, and 9 for Donovan Mitchell on 12-27 shooting. All of Jordan Clarkson's 21 points came in the 2nd quarter, where at one point he scored 17 straight points.  Bucks win a road game 7 in classic bout with Brooklyn in OT. KD plays all 53 minutes, dropping 48 points (including incredible fadeaway foot on the line game tying bucket to force OT with 1 second left) 9 boards, and 6 dimes.Nets had 0 bench FG attempted, and finished with 0 points. Only played Jeff Green (13 mins) and Landry Shamet (7 mins)Giannis counters with 40 and 13 boards of his own to overcome poor (but timely) shooting from Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday (36 points on 14-49, 29%, combined).Hawks stun Sixers on road (3rd time this series) in game 7 to send the city of Philly in downward spiralTrae Young struggles shooting again (5-23) but finishes with 21 and 10 dimes. Kevin Huerter played huge, dropping 27 and 7 boards on 10-18 shooting and a bunch of and-one jumpshots.31 and 11 boards for Embiid, but the 8 turnovers hurt. Ben Simmons only was 2-4, even passing on a wide open dunk attempt late in 4th quarter and Seth Curry's foul trouble as well as Huerter killing him forced Doc Rivers to limit Curry's minutes.Game 1 of WCF (Suns vs. Clippers)No CP3 (Covid protocol) or Kawhi (knee sprain), but this one was a classic. In this episode we'll recap how the second round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs is going so far! At time of recording, the Hawks were up 3-2 midway through game 6, Nets-Bucks were headed to game 7, Suns completed the surprising sweep of the Nuggets, and Clips were up 3-2 on the Jazz.Some highlights so far:Suns sweep was outstanding. Chris Paul's 4th quarter takeovers and mid-range pullups were the difference, forcing Jokic to extend defense and put them on edge.His availability is now in question due to entering COVID protocol, and we go over how he can get out while missing minimal time.Clippers came roaring back in LA, winning both and Paul George and Kawhi playing lights out. BUTTTT, Kawhi hurt his knee late in game 4, toughed it out for that game, but missed game 5 and 6. Maybe out for rest of playoffs.Paul George answered in game 5. On the road in Utah, he drops 37 and 16 boards. Big games from Reggie Jackson and Morris as well helped them and they have a chance to close out in LA.Nets lost Kyrie in Game 4. With backs against the wall losing the last 2, they needed a MASSIVE game from KD. Harden came out of nowhere to return to lineup, and played a bunch of minutes but really was limited and not himself. But boy, did KD deliver a masterful game 5. 49 points (1 away from playoff career high), 17 boards, and 10 assists while playing every second of the game. Hit big jumper after big jumper as Nets erased 17 point halftime lead at home.Bucks extend their seasons with big games from Middleton (38) and Giannis (37) and game 7 in Brooklyn is Saturday. No Kyrie for games 5-7.Hawks stole one from Philly in game 5. Down 26 late in third quarter, they went to hack a Ben and a backcourt of Lou Will and Trae Young to make a comeback. Philly can NOT be excused, at home with that much of a lead.  What happened Friday night:Poor free throw shooting and the Hawks go cold in the 4th quarter, Sixers eek out the road victory and force game 7 at home.22 and 13 boards for Embiid, but he did have 8 TurnoversTrae Young had 34 and 12 assists, but went 13-30.Clips Jazz - Clippers erase a  25 point second half deficit to advance to WCF and win 4 straight games against Jazz (2 without Kawhi!).Terrance Mann showed up! In this episode we'll recap how the second round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs is going so far! At time of recording, the Sixers and Hawks were tied at 1-1, Nets were up 2-1 on Bucks, Suns were up 2-0 on Nuggets, and Jazz were up 2-0 on Clippers.Some highlights so far:Donovan Mitchell is BALLING! 45 in Game 1, 27 first half points in Game 2 (finished with 37), and Jazz have held on to win a few nail-biters at home in Utah. Suns have a balanced offense, Booker doesn't need to drop 30 to win a game. They've proven that in both series so far.Bucks defense is getting torched in Brooklyn, sans Harden. They slowed down the game enough to win on a game winning layup by Jrue Holiday in game 3, but can they keep up. We talk chances of Harden coming back as well. Embiid looks healthy and not injured at all. Has played over 30 minutes every game, playoff career high 40 in game 2 and dominating the thinner Capela.What happened Friday night:Philly wins game 3 behind another big game from Embiid. They are now up 2-1Joel Embiid had 27, 9 boards, and 8 asssits.Tobias Harris chipped in with 22 and 83 headed monster for PHX as they cruise against Nuggets for 3-0 leadAyton: 10 and 15CP3: 27 and 8 assistsDevin Booker: 28 and 6 boardsJokic finishes with 32, 20 boards, 10 assits in loss. At time of recording, the Eastern semis matchups each played game 1, so we cheated a little and had a sneak peek.  We will recap those games as well.The overarching theme: The young kids of the new generation showed up under the brightest lights. Trae Young had a game winner at MSG and averaged 30 and 10 against one of the best defensive teams in the Knicks to knock them out in 5Devin Booker had multiple 30 point games, and even had 25+ in the first quarter of a closeout game 6 (finished with 47) to knock off injured defending champ LA Lakers in 6.Jayson Tatum had multiple 30 pointers, and had a 50 pointer in the play-in and another 50 pointer against Nets big 3 to steal one, before ultimately succumbing to the talent of the Nets in 5.Luka Doncic was a BEAST! Averaged 36, 10 apg, and 8rpg in the 7 game series, torching the Clippers with multiple 40 point triple doubles before finally running out of gas in 2nd half of game 7, ultimately losing to the Clips even after stealing 3 road games.Ja Morant had 47 in a playoff game, even stole one from the Jazz in Utah while Donovan Mitchell was still out.Big Shockers:Knicks going cold (looking at you Julius Randle) and losing in 5 to Atlanta when many thought it would go to 7.Heat getting swept 1 year after beating the Bucks and when game 1 went into OT and was very close (Middleton game winner). They got crushed in the games after.Lebron looking tentative, tired, and unwilling to impose will after AD goes out with groin injury midway through game 4 (Lakers lost last 3 games of the series after that).Now, the second round. And we got some AMAZING matchups!West(1) Jazz vs. (4) ClipsX factor alert: Will Rudy Gobert establish a low post presence so that the Clips don't go small with Morris at the 5?
