V-Bucks prices just got TAXED

In today's Daily Fix:Resident Evil Requiem's director, Koshi Nakanishi, confirmed on social media that the team is hard at work on a story expansion and mini-game DLC. It's widely believed that the mini-game will be the latest version of the series' popular "Mercernaries" mode. In other news, Nintendo has confirmed the release date for the latest Yoshi game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The game will be out May 21. And finally, Epic is making changes to the Fortntie economy, charging more for V-Bucks, but also charging fewer V-Bucks for Battle Passes. Epic explained that this is to help "pay the bills" when it comes to keeping Fortnite up and running.

Huit ans après sa sortie, le jeu du studio Epic Games, figure encore très régulièrement sur le podium des jeux vidéo réunissant le plus de joueurs. Surtout, Fortnite reste l'un des jeux les plus profitables au monde... alors qu'il est gratuit. Commençons par le commencement. À sa sortie en 2017, Fortnite est un banal jeu de tir multijoueur comme il en existe des centaines d'autres. Ces graphismes cartoon à la Pixar le rendent-ils plus sympathique aux yeux des parents ? Ils s'installent dans le paysage vidéoludique en s'emparant du concept de battle royale, très populaire à l'époque. Surtout, Epic Games multiplient habilement les partenariats avec les franchises à succès, à commencer par Marvel et ses super héros. De saison en saison, de nouveaux personnages du sport, de la pop culture font leur apparition dans Fortnite, assurant au jeu de rester au centre des conversations dans les cours de récréation. À partir de 2019, Fortnite va plus loin et propose à ses joueurs des concerts virtuels. À l'affiche, Marshmello, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, Metallica ou encore Aya Nakamura. Deux ans avant sa prestation remarquée en ouverture des JO 2024, la chanteuse franco-malienne se donne en concert sur Fortnite. À son apogée, Epic Games revendique 350 millions de joueurs. Bien aidé par le fait que Fortnite soit accessible gratuitement sur presque tous les supports, des ordinateurs aux consoles en passant par les tablettes et les téléphones. Gratuit et pourtant, Fortnite a rapporté à sa maison mère, plusieurs dizaines de milliards de dollars depuis sa sortie. Comment ? D'abord parce que les marques, y compris de luxe, sont prêtes à payer — et payer cher – pour apparaître dans l'univers du jeu et toucher un public plus jeune. Et puis si l'accès au jeu est gratuit, dans Fortnite, tout le reste est payant. On paye pour habiller son avatar ou pour qu'il puisse effectuer les mêmes pas de danse qu'un youtubeur connu ou qu'Aya Nakamura. Par l'intermédiaire d'une agence de communication, l'entreprise précise que les « joueurs peuvent gagner des objets en relevant des défis dans le jeu » et que ces achats de cosmétiques sont « facultatifs ». Mais pour aller plus vite et accéder aux derniers items à la mode, les joueurs sont incités à mettre la main au portefeuille. Et dans Fortnite, on ne paye pas en dollars, en yuans ou en euros. On paye en V-Bucks. La monnaie virtuelle locale qui, elle, s'achète avec de l'argent bien réel. Mais cela permet de mettre une distance artificielle. Quand on dépense 500 V-Bucks pour acheter un chapeau rigolo à son alter ego virtuel, on n'a pas l'impression de dépenser de l'argent. Surtout quand on a douze ans, une notion de la valeur des choses encore très relative et qu'on dépense l'argent de papa et maman. Une politique qui a valu à l'entreprise une procédure menée en 2022 par la FTC, le gendarme de la concurrence aux États-Unis à la suite de laquelle Epic Games a accepté de payer une amende de 275 millions de dollars pour « violation des lois sur la confidentialité des données des enfants » et à rembourser 245 millions de dollars à des utilisateurs poussés à faire des achats non désirés.
