As a new mom, don’t you wish you had someone whispering in your ear with practical and trustworthy guidance? Finding clarity can be challenging these days, and the uncertainty seems almost deafening. Talking Toddlers breaks down how our children grow, learn & develop - by building relationships, human connections, and learning through language. I’m Erin Hyer, a licensed speech-language pathologist - and for nearly 35 years I’ve played with kids on the floor, inspired parents to use everyday routines for learning, consulted with early educators, and trained graduate students to move beyond the classroom and “think outside the box.” My purpose is clear - understand how the brain learns to learn, bridge any gaps before they turn into life-long challenges, and keep kids moving forward. I don’t believe in “taking anything for granted” or “leaving it to chance.” Nor do I subscribe to accepting the increasing “new normal.” Parents are in a very special position to create a language-rich home environment & truly guide kids to thrive, to learn through everyday activities, while building confidence, flexibility and a true curiosity for learning. Episodes will bring practical ideas, as well as, some deep dives to help you understand why there are roadblocks? I believe we are more likely to implement strategies and activities or make changes if we know the reasoning behind them. My goal - to help moms feel empowered and toddlers happier. Please join me every Tuesday, Talking Toddlers where moms come for clarity, connection and courage. Stay tuned for amazing interviews, discussions & practical guidance on how Talking Toddlers learn to thrive - at home - with their moms!
Why is it so hard to set screen time boundaries with toddlers? In this episode of Talking Toddlers, Erin dives into the often-overlooked world of prelinguistic development during your baby's first year.Drawing on 35+ years of clinical experience, Erin explains how babbling builds the foundation for speech, how movement (yes, even tummy time!) connects to oral motor skills, and why quiet babies need your attention—not just patience. You'll learn why consonants and vowels matter, how feeding and communication go hand-in-hand, and what those sweet squeals, grunts, and coos are really trying to tell you.Plus, get a sneak peek at what happens when screens disrupt this critical learning window—and why your baby needs you more than any device. If you've ever wondered “Is my baby on track?” or felt unsure about what babbling should really sound like, this episode is for you. Part 2 of the “Is My Baby's Development Normal?” Mini-SeriesWhat happens when a milestone disappears from the checklist? In this episode, we're digging into a surprising decision: the CDC no longer considers crawling a core developmental milestone. But does that mean it's no longer important?Absolutely not. With 35+ years of clinical experience in early childhood development, I'll walk you through why crawling still plays a crucial role in brain development, sensory integration, coordination, and even future learning. We'll explore the sequence of gross motor milestones—tummy time, rolling, crawling, standing, and walking—and how each one builds the foundation for what comes next. You'll also learn:Why some babies skip crawling (and what to watch for)How early movement impacts speech, attention, and emotional regulationWhat you can do today to support your baby's development—no fancy toys requiredIf you've ever wondered whether your baby is on track—or why movement matters at all—this is the episode for you.Join the Waitlist CLICK HERE
When should my baby be talking? Crawling? Feeding your family should be simple—but today, food companies have made it confusing on purpose. Nearly 70% of toddlers' food and 73% of grocery store products are ultra-processed. And it's not by accident—it's by design, for profit. In this episode, we'll pull back the curtain on how we got here, revealing the six ways the baby food industry manipulate parents into thinking convenience equals better nutrition. We'll review the real impact of ultra-processed foods on your child's brain, gut health, and long-term eating habits. But here's the good news: You can take back control! I'll share simple strategies for batch cooking, making one meal the whole family can enjoy (yes, even for babies!), and small steps to break free from the trap of processed convenience foods. You don't have to be perfect—just start making small changes today!

This episode is Part 2 of our deep dive into ‘Gentle Parenting Trends'—and why social media doesn't always model the best examples for real-life parenting. If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, I highly recommend starting there first! In that episode, I covered the first two key developmental stages:✅ 12-18 months – The early stages of independence, how cause-and-effect learning is still concrete, and why emotional development starts with attunement from infancy... but it's up to us to shape it.✅ 18-24 months – The beginning of boundary testing, the emerging nature of language, and why expecting toddlers to understand ‘why' or ‘how' questions is unrealistic.
Are social media's parenting trends helping—or hurting—new moms? Over the last few years, parenting trends like ‘Gentle Parenting' have exploded on social media. While some aspects—like respecting your child and guiding them with empathy—are rooted in good intentions, the reality is that many influencers distort these concepts, leaving parents confused, overwhelmed, and even paralyzed by indecision. Many moms today are questioning:

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the fascinating world into the crucial stages of babbling with your baby. To ensure a thorough understanding of the subtle distinctions between each stage and how best to gauge your baby's or toddler's growth, I've split this remarkable exploration into two episodes.CLICK HERE TO GRAB ESSENTIAL CHECKLISTWe explore the significance of both cooing and babbling as precursors to language development, serving as windows into your child's cognitive and communicative abilities. For those with older toddlers, these insights will help determine if they're slow talkers, plateaued, or right on track.Drawing from over three decades of clinical practice and real-life experience, I guide you on why being intentional during these moments is paramount. Unfortunately, not many professionals discuss the significance of babbling, perhaps because they don't fully understand it themselves. More importantly, the common advice to "just wait, he'll find his way" is, in my opinion, evasive.I share insights from the rich history of research on early child development, emphasizing the importance of actively engaging with your baby during these formative stages. Understanding these early cues can empower you to foster optimal linguistic growth right from the start.Practical strategies and everyday activities to enhance both cooing and babbling skills are discussed, promoting a strong foundation for future language acquisition. As always, the tone of the podcast is a blend of loving encouragement and firm guidance, mirroring the nuanced approach of parenting itself. Success can look different to each of us ... but I bet you have some 'idea' of how you see your toddler in the future ... confident, curious, helpful, kind, creative? How can we help him or her achieve that?Well it starts with PLAY ... to explore their environment, try new things, and solve problems (through play) they build confidence, social competence, and emotional stability.Listen to this week's episode to hone your understanding of the best form of PLAY!OPEN-ENDED PLAY ...It is play with no direction, no limits, rules, or interference. It is letting your child use his imagination free from predefined limits or expectations. No amount of technology can do for the developing child's brain what a box, a pile of clay, or a tub of wooden blocks can do.You don't need expensive toys – nor do you need a lot of toys. For engaging, self-directed learning to happen in your home, you need toys to encourage open-ended play.Show them a few ideas ... set the stage ... and then let them run with it.
