They also discuss Greg's “airjack” protocol and why he and all his friends took home the centerpieces from the AVN Awards. Next, Jason “Mayhem” Miller reads the news including stories about a FEMA official who was fired for allegedly telling workers to avoid Florida homes with Trump signs, Mattel mistakenly printing a porn site on Wicked movie doll boxes, a journalist responding to Martha Stewart saying she was dead now, and New York City ending a voucher program that allowed migrant families to buy their own food. Then, jiu-jitsu legend Rickson Gracie joins to talk about his long career in mixed martial arts, how the Gracie family were always open to an invitation to fight, how important controlled breath is while fighting, and his new book “Comfort in Darkness: The Invisible Power of Jiu-Jitsu.” For more with Greg Fitzsimmons: ● COMEDY SPECIAL: “You Know Me” available now on YouTube. ● INSTAGRAM: @gregfitzsimmons ● WEBSITE: gregfitzsimmons.com For more with Rickson Gracie: ● NEW BOOK: “Comfort in Darkness: The Invisible Power of Jiu-Jitsu” available ● INSTAGRAM: @ricksongraciejj ● WEBSITE: ricksongracie.com Thank you for supporting our sponsors: ● http://SimpliSafe.com/Adam ● BotanicTonics.com, use code ADAM ● Chime.com/Adam ● http://OReillyAuto.com/Adam

After so many years of setting the table like a Turkish bazaar, that is adding color and layers, and more colors and more layers to make the tables look interesting, unique, and personal, I am officially stating that my New Year resolve is to start set my tables using all white. I know it is time. Not that I will shy away from colorful accents, flowers, and accessories, I am just feeling that considering all that is going on around us, an all-white table is calming, welcoming, and stress-free. I think it is going to change my life. The basics are: A white tablecloth will stand masses of wear. It can be linen, cotton, or damask. It can be embroidered in white, simply hemmed, or raw-edged. It will withstand stains, spills, and all sorts of bad treatment. And, when cared for, it will always look polished, crisp, and elegant. Use it with felt padding under it so it doesn't move around and wash it quickly after each use, treating the spots with salt. Yes, salt. A set of white linen napkins are the best. With all white or color initials (if you must), with or without an embroidered border, or just with a simple hem, white napkins go from everyday breakfast to fancy dinner parties. 20x20 are the luxurious size and I prefer linen to any other material. A set of white plates with a simple gold band, with a scalloped border, or just plain. They can be round, oval, or square. Octagonal ones are great for layering, and the ones with leaves on the border are also great to use as accents. Ceramic, pottery, fine china, and porcelain can be mixed to create interesting combinations. Meaning, that white plates are not boring, they are classics that you can use forever and then, mix and match as you like. Candles: Ivory candles -not white- are the most elegant ones. However, changing the color of the candlesticks adds a touch of whimsy and style. I have been using a lot of pale pink candlesticks that glow with a beautiful rose hue making everyone look so much better! And yes, you can mix the colors as long as the tone is the same. Glasses: Clear crystal is always best but, I also like pale-hued glasses especially at night on an all-white table…. you have to see what you are drinking! A great idea is to invest in an all-purpose glass (stemmed or not) that you can use to serve everything. Centerpieces: are as easy as a white ceramic bowl filled with fruit, or all one color of different types of flowers, or a group of green leaves and ferns to add texture and depth. Even on an all-white table, a punch of color is welcome. Candlesticks: Silver, bronze, wood, and glass are all perfect. Place them in groups or by themselves scattered around the table and make sure that they don't block anyone's view. I love how wonderful a table looks with only candlesticks as decor… but do mix high and low ones like votives and tapers to achieve a sense of movement. We'll see how long this lasts, right? I am excited to start. With promises of more all-white ideas, I leave you. Sincerely,The Serial Hostess From the archives: Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.

Weddings can be as painful as they are joyous. Together they share 15 weddings as bridesmaids/maids of honor, and Anna has been a bride herself. Thanksgiving Day is almost upon us. It will be good to gather safely with friends and family again to celebrate. To make the meal more festive consider decorating your table with plants. You can use a variety of living plants and cuttings to make a centerpiece or smaller place settings to accentuate the holiday. Here's some ideas. For live plants, select a houseplant that dazzles with color. Some good choices include croton, moth orchid, Chinese evergreen and flamingo flower. These houseplants burst with the colors of the season and can be used as permanent houseplants in your home. Dress up the centerpiece with a glazed or unusual pot or simply by wrapping an attractive piece of fabric around the pot and drainage tray. You can also create a stunning flower arrangement to highlight the table. Use seasonal flowers from your garden and landscape such as ornamental grasses, dried hydrangeas, juniper berries and mountain laurel cuttings to create a fall centerpiece. Consider mixing in edibles such as small squash, pumpkins and kale leaves. Seed pods offer fun accents. Look for any remaining milkweed pods, lunaria or money plant pods and holly berries. For smaller settings, try little pots of succulents such as echeveria, semperviren, and sedum. These come with colorful leaves and make great houseplants after the holiday. Small pots of Rex begonias, mini roses and kalanchoe also brightens up the holiday table. So, enjoy Thanksgiving, being grateful for the people and plants in our lives.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We live in a world dominated by ratings. We generally prefer to purchase 5-star products, read 5-star books, eat at 5-star restaurants, and watch 5-star movies. Why then would you settle for anything less than a 5-star career? Today's guest says you absolutely should not, and offers ways to be your best self at work and in your personal life.In this HRchat episode, we hear from Penelope Przekop, a corporate quality management expert, entrepreneur, and writer. Throughout her 30+ year career, Penelope has worked with numerous Fortune 100 pharma companies, including Pfizer, Merck, Lilly, and Glaxo Smith Kline, and held leadership positions at Novartis, Covance, Wyeth, and Johnson & Johnson.Penelope is the founder and CEO of PDC Pharma Strategy and serves as the Chief Compliance Officer for Engrail Therapeutics. She is also the author of Six Sigma for Business Excellence (McGraw-Hill), four novels: Please Love Me, Aberrations, Centerpieces, and Dust and she has a new book coming out in November called 5-Star Career: Define and Build Yours Using the Science of Quality Management: amazon.com/5-Star-Career-Science-Quality-Management/Questions Include:Let's begin by understanding a bit about you. While struggling to overcome a troubling childhood, become the best version of yourself, and build a career, you began incorporating quality management concepts into your personal thought process at home and at work. As a result, you say you found what proved for you to be “the missing link” between all of your hard work and feeling rewarded. Tell me more. Why do people settle for mediocracy? Is it laziness (too much ‘Netflix and chill' time)? Is it a lack of opportunity? Is it the system keeping us down? Is it something else? Why do you believe one's career is, essentially, what we make of it? Talk to me about the concept of a person's career being a product created by their own process. Share too, how to improve that process by learning to manage all the parts as an integrated, unified whole. In your new book, you suggest it's possible for us to each clearly define what a quality career means. Tell us about that process. As part of that answer, perhaps you can explain what you mean when you explain that a ‘successful career is not just about money and that it's vital to shift one's personal philosophy, mindset, and operating system to support developing it?You stress the critical role data plays in making decisions that can produce a 5-star career. How can data guide us along our career journeys and help us to avoid impulsive leaps and be more honest with ourselves? We do our best to ensure editorial objectivity. This week, we continue our series about wedding basics. One thing that all weddings have in common is décor.  Some of the first questions you'll be asked is "What are your colors?" and "What are your favorite flowers?" But the rules have changed, and more and more couples are choosing to have recyclable options that DON"T include fresh cut flowers. This week we welcome Nichole Sellars - the owner of CLE Events & Rentals - a company specializing in unique backdrops and décor. Nichole started her business in 2017 after several years with the Seminole Tribe and Casinos, where they leaned on her heavily to come up with truly impressive visuals for their bigger-than-life events. Now, she works with couples to come up with truly unique centerpieces that don't always include flowers! So what should you be thinking about for your wedding? What are some options that you might not have thought about? On the last Wednesday of every month, Christy & Michelle answer listener questions live on the show - YAWA! This month we're answering questions about: How to include special people into the wedding / How to have a rehearsal at an alternate location / Family-style dinner / Not hiring a DJ and using playlists instead / Alternative ways of honoring in-laws, and more! Email Question #1 My fiancé and I have a large wedding party (9 each). Most of them are dating each other and friends we've had for a long time. We have one more couple that we are close to, but we don't see as often that we want to include in our wedding day. They are already invited to all of the pre wedding events. We are in their wedding (smaller party and less friends of theirs from before they were dating) the weekend after ours. We've been racking our brains for ways to include them in the day that doesn't require giving them a job because they feel too special to give a job to. We were considering a reading or something like that during the ceremony since they are both Catholic like my fiancé and we are trying to include that in our day without it being a full Catholic wedding. I wanted to see if you had any suggestions of ways to include them in a way that honors our friendship without them feeling super left out or like we are just assigning them a job? Answer to #1: You answered your own question a little bit here! The best options feels like readings. The readings don't have to be religious, unless you want them to be. Another fun idea that has grown in popularity recently is Flower Adults (like as opposed to flower girls). They could hold the rings, deliver a poem, sing a song. There are also other elements of Catholicism you could tie in. Are there any parts of a Catholic wedding your fiancé wants to include that they could participate in? Email Question #2: I am in 3 weddings this years, so I've been trying to be the most knowledgeable I can be to help out my friends. One of the brides has a venue that does not allow a rehearsal at the venue, and I know how important rehearsals are. Do you have any ideas on how we can have a rehearsal not at the venue? And how I can convince the bride she does in fact need a rehearsal since the Officiant is an "Unofficial Officiant"? Thanks and keep up the great work! Answer to #2: Check out our Episode #37 (https://www.thebigweddingplanningpodcast.com/episodes/sq1hgq4uadk2ovpuq3ams76fvzqxiu?rq=37), the show notes alone are very informative! Rehearsals are so important! In fact, we dedicated an entire lesson in our Master Class (https://www.thebigweddingplanningmasterclass.com/) to them. It is absolutely possible to do it outside of the venue. The idea is to walk through the main points of the ceremony. Ultimately it's more about timing than the exact space itself. This helps the big day go so much smoother. Any rehearsal is better than no rehearsal. The location doesn't matter as much as the actual run through. Lobby of the hotel, backyard, etc. all of those places are totally acceptable and doable. Voicemail Question #3: I am getting married in September of 2022 my fiancé and I are super excited. We're getting married at this really cool Blank Slate industrial venue in Cleveland, Ohio. We really wanted to tie in some of our cultural backgrounds, because that's really important to us at this venue. My family is super Polish and we're going to have a Polka Band coming cuz that's something that we do at all of my family parties. And for Sam's side, he's super Italian. So one of the things we wanted to do is different family-style Gnocchi, passed around the table for dinner. And that's kind of where my question comes in. I was curious if you guys have seen family-style work well and how they really designed the table for that. We don't want to light a bunch of candles or have decor that could get knocked over or crushed if we had all of these bowls on top of it and whatnot. Answer to #3: We love family style! Here are some elements to consider: - The size of the table (the bigger the better) - The way the guests are sitting (they need some space) - How many guests are at each table (you probably want 2 platters of each food type) - Decor (a centerpeice on a large round table is still doable) - The food itself (you want things that are easy to share) - Service (you still need wait staff and in some instances, it's best for the wait staff to help serve at each table) - Shape of the table (ideal would be a 72" round or an extra wide banquet table) - Price (Family-style can be more expensive because the caterer needs to order extra food) - Timeline (Considering toasts and that this food service type is typically a little faster than a buffet or sit - down meal) Remember, guests are typically passing the food around the table. When you are passing around the trays, think about the dishes that are being used. Shallow dishes are the standard for something like gnocchi - so it is important to talk to the caterer about logistics. The last thing you want is for the food to spill on a guest as it gets passed around. You don't have to do the whole dinner service family style, but keep it in mind that it does require extra consciousness about each element of the table. It can be more expensive, because you need more of each option on the tray to make sure that everyone gets what they want. The portions can be smaller, but you have to assume that each guest will take one of each option. Centerpieces are not impossible, just keep them low. Voicemail Question #4: I am a Music lover. I'm a musician. I feel like I'm really good at making playlists and creating an Ambience with music. But of course, I can't be my own DJ, right? So my work around is that I am making a playlist I've been working on it, far before I even got engaged and I'm going to have a friend who works in radio emcee the night and play my playlist so I still have the emcee but you know, I get to play all the songs that I've curated. I'm already getting guests talking to me about wanting certain songs played and I know this is a cool thing that some people do if they are doing a playlist. They might ask their guests. Did you want to include a song request, you know on your RSVP, but I personally don't want any of that. I don't want anyone having any say in it. I have thought about my guests and the songs they will like. My partner is from Ecuador, so we have a lot of Latin music included but a lot of old favorites that my family will enjoy as well and I just don't want take requests on the night-of either. I am telling my Emcee to be firm in this but is there anything else I can do? Can there be a nice way of saying this before the music even starts? I think people will really enjoy the playlist if they just let themselves, but you know how drunk people can be so this is just a big concern of mine and I know it might sound a little crazy, but I just really don't want anyone requesting anything. I want my playlist to play because I worked so hard on the order of it! I've just put a lot of time into this. So, I was just wondering if there was a nice way to say this without sounding like the biggest party pooper of all time. Answer to #4: Check out our Episode #46 (https://www.thebigweddingplanningpodcast.com/episodes/wv6lajmysmvlkgatxglvfz71ipslc7?rq=46)! It's all about DJ'ing your own wedding and In it, our guest talks all about the things you need outside of the actual playlist itself. He also suggests having more than one playlist available just in case. We see you have an emcee, so make sure they are completely control of the playlist so you do not have to have any part in that. It's too much stress to add into your day when you should just be able to dance and enjoy. As wedding planners, we always suggest a professional wedding DJ if the budget allows. It is also okay not to have one. You are also not required to take requests, at all. You can even add it to the wedding website so people are not inclined to keep asking. Email Question #5: My fiancé and I got engaged on July 4th, 2020, and have the bulk of the planning for our March 26, 2022 wedding complete (yay!). We're really starting to focus on guest and family experiences, which are some of the things we care the most about with our wedding. Our wedding mission statement is "host a fun, logistically convenient party for all of our family and friends". That said, we come from very different kinds of families. I'm from a big, warm, loud, mushy, huggy, Italian family, and he's from a more reserved, intellectual, independent German and Pennsylvania Dutch family. Our families get along really well, and we both love, appreciate, and enjoy spending time with each other's families. I'm super close with both of my parents (and quite close with my fiancé's parents as well...what can I say, I'm a people person), but while he loves his parents, he's still working on building the kind of warm and fuzzy relationship I have with mine. We recognize that our families and upbringings are different, but there are values from each family that we want to share and build on. All that said, my question centers around how to include my future mother-in-law in our wedding in a way that makes her feel comfortable and feels authentic to the relationship she has with us as a couple and with her son. My father-in-law is a friendly Midwesterner and is excited to be part of as many parts of the wedding as possible (rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, the whole thing). My future MIL is a brilliant, caring, introvert who I think has a bit of social anxiety. Do you have any ideas of how we can honor my mother-in-law and/or father-in-law in a more subtle way that will still show them and our guests how much we love and appreciate them just the way they are? We did ask my future MIL if we could hold our rings in a beautiful small wooden box that her father made, and she really liked that idea. We would love any suggestions or thoughts you may have! Answer to #5: The best piece of advice we can give to you is to take her cues. Remember that her social anxiety has nothing to do with you or your wedding, or how she feels about your marrying her son. It can be easy to take it personally, but know that it has nothing to do with you. She is advocating for herself about wanting to leave early. She may surprise you and stay longer, but just let that be unexpected and a nice bonus if it happens. It will only happen if she feels heard and comfortable. If they don't feel comfortable doing the mother/son dance (ask mom/ask fiancé), then skip it. You can have a group parent dance if she wants to do it but without being the center of attention. Maybe you can include your siblings, or all the parents/grandparents. Ultimately, just communicate beforehand. She may be more willing than you expected, but regardless she will feel loved for that effort. NOTES:To reduce the number of centerpieces you need, consider using 6' or 72" rounds instead of 5' or 60" rounds. As I discussed in Tip #78, 6 foot rounds can seat 10-12 guests (depending on if you use a charger or wider chairs), so you can fit more people at fewer tables, which will reduce the total number of floral centerpieces that you need. However, make sure your venue has the correct size of tables or that you can bring them in from a rental company.

Complete Show Notes Coming ASAP! Local Flowers Kirkham & Co (http://www.kirkhamnco.com) I’m so excited to introduce my guest today because of a few reasons! We were just talking about my recent trip to Paris in the Pre-chat and he has also been to Paris! and Facebook groups have been such a big part of my show lately! And I want to remind you to join the  Organic Gardener Podcast Facebook Community (http://organicgardenerpodcast.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=e3e16d6ddb7c0acd9e17348ed&id=b6a8f6bd31&e=e16e7400c4) ! And if you don’t get Facebook, I encourage you to join a Facebook Group. I met him in the  Flower Farmer Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/flowerfarmers/?ref=br_tf) Julio Freitas (https://www.facebook.com/kirkhamnco/?fref=ts)  started his career in floral design doing weekly floral arrangements for Harper and Madison, in Billings, MT. He was inspired by the works of Jeff Leatham, Jane Packer and many other European floral designers. Eventually, his work was also noticed by brides and his arrangements in the wedding industry are nothing short of gorgeous! From a casual wildflower look to a more structured, contemporary style, Julio can do it all! His portfolio speaks for itself! He will always try to create different and unique floral arrangements for you so your wedding can be the “Pinterest” inspiration for other brides! Bouquets, Boutonnieres, Centerpieces, Arches, Aisles… all will be done according to your color scheme, theme, budget and the flowers you want! When you hire  Kirkham & Co (http://www.kirkhamnco.com) . for your floral needs, you also get excellent customer service, from conception to completion as well as unique designs and perfect flowers! Tell us a little about yourself. I’ve been getting ready for this podcast and going through what I want to talk about in the podcast. My name is Julio, so it’s not hulio, Julio, is the right pronunciation. I’m from Brazil and I moved to Montana in 2008, when I got a full ride scholarship to go to  Rocky Mountain College (https://www.rocky.edu) , in Billings. I moved from Brazil straight to Montana, I had no idea where Montana was, sometimes life takes you down paths you would not even consider and I’m just so glad that this path happened because I absolutely love Montana! It is my home now. (http://www.kirkhamnco.com) Delivering those beautiful blooms! I moved here to go to college graduated in 2006, graduated in 2008, as I transferred at as a junior got an internship at the  Hilton Garden Inn Hotel (http://hiltongardeninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/montana/hilton-garden-inn-billings-BILBMGI/index.html)  in Billings, I had no idea. I was never destined to work at a hotel, I didn’t want to do it, thought I was going to do my internship get out of there and go do something else. Hospitality is just one of those things that grows on you…  I thought I was just gonna do my internship and then leave but that little seed of hospitality grew in me I was there for 7 years, and I just loved it. I got to interact in friends, there was never a day I it was such an exciting job! Getting Started In Floral Curating At that time I was assigned to be the visual arts for the hotel I would usually do a silk floral arrangement for their table, we would change that each season. (http://www.harperandmadison.com) One day I walked into a little cafe in Billings called  Harper & Madison (http://www.harperandmadison.com) . It was the week of their opening. She had a little flowers display on the table. I just went in had coffee, and I thought great: we have something in the neighborhood cute food was... Support this podcast
