Doro and Trica welcome author and podcaster Kathryn Nicolai to discuss the importance of bedtime stories and their calming effects on sleep. They talk about her work: collections of stories that she reads aloud to help her listeners fall asleep. Her podcast combines the art of storytelling with the healing power of mindfulness, offering a retreat for the mind, with an intended medicinal effect. Kathryn shares insights into her creative process and the intimate connections she bridges with listeners, most touchingly of those who use her work in hospice care. The conversation also touches on the significance of community. Kathryn's focus on sleep as a foundation for good health mirrors her belief that creativity is a practice, something that can be developed over time with consistent effort and intention, and she encourages listeners to explore mindfulness, self-care, and connection through storytelling.

Season 14, Episode 29 Our story tonight is called New Owners at the Orchard, and it a story about a beloved spot in the village, getting fresh life as apple season is about to begin. It's also about gathering baskets, pumpkins turning orange in their patch, a push broom leaned against the side of a barn and the joy of making something old, new again. We give to a different charity each week, and this week, we are giving to Humble Design Detroit. They change lives and communities by custom designing and fully furnishing home interiors for individuals, families, and veterans emerging from homelessness. Our story tonight is called At the Diamond, and it's a story about a warm day, stretched out on a blanket under a tree. I've had many incredible women join me in conversation for many Loving Later Life episodes. As you may remember, with each guest, I ask the same 3 questions at the end of each conversation: 1. What for you have been the most rewarding things about getting older? 2. What are some of the most important lessons you have learned in your life. 3. With all that you have learned, what life advice would you pass along? In this anniversary episode I put together a highlight reel of their answers, taking one question at a time. Listening to this again you will be reminded of the wisdom they shared. There is gold in them there conversations! Take a listen and share it forward!
Kathryn Nicolai's podcast "Nothing Much Happens" was literally a life-changer for me, as I've been able to have more consistent and restful sleep night after night. I couldn't recommend it more highly. (From 10/20/20).KATHRYN NICOLAI, the Michigan-based writer and creator of the enormously successful podcast Nothing Much Happens, is an architect of coziness, writing soothing stories that both ease the reader into peaceful sleep and teach the principals of mindfulness so that waking hours likewise become sweet and serene. She leans on her seventeen years of experience as a yoga and meditation teacher to seamlessly blend storytelling with brain training techniques that build better sleep habits over time. She is the owner of Ethos Yoga.
This episode originally aired in July of 2022, and is encore worthy! Kathryn is the creator of the enormously successful podcast Nothing Much Happens and the author of the book of the same name. Nothing Much Happens is consistently ranked in the top 1% of all podcasts in the world and has received over 65 million downloads. Kathryn seamlessly blends storytelling with brain training methods that build better sleep habits over time. And imagine …wait till you hear about this… doing all of this not being able to picture a person's face or see things in her mind. Not be missed take-ways: 1. Stop waiting to feel ready. There's no time to wait to feel ready. 2. If there's something you're passionate about, something you're excited about stop wasting time and go do it. 3. When in doubt, do what you were going to do first, especially if you're a second guesser or an over thinker. 4. People aged 60 + have the most difficulty sleeping. 5. There's an old zen saying: you open the front door and you open the back door you let thoughts move through but you don't sit them down and invite them to tea. 6. Sleep affects everything. It's so foundational to our health. If we're not sleeping everything is endangered. 7. If you're a little older and you feel like you have a dream that you haven't pursued yet, it's not too late! But get started. Start making it happen!

Hi Everyone, We had so much fun discussing Leigh Newman's short story, "An Extravaganza in Two Acts," available here from Electric Literature. You are going to learn so much about writing historical fiction. Leigh is a hoot! The conversation moved at a clip, so I have some discussion notes for you below. Also, check out the bonus question one of my earlier guests, award-winning author and Pulitzer-prize nominated journalist Desiree Cooper, sent to Leigh after we recorded the podcast. We have a new Let's Deconstruct a Story Facebook page and Instagram page. I'd love to see you there. Please like or follow it if you have a chance, and feel free to post questions, comments, or suggestions for future guests. Here's a link to the podcast on Apple, Spotify, and Audible. Next month, I'll be talking to Cara Blue Adams about her short story, "Vision," available here. You might consider buying Cara Blue Adams' book, You Never Get it Back, from Bookshop because my co-host for that podcast, Vincent Perrone, is part owner of Book Suey in Hamtramck, and all sales that roll through Bookshop next month will support his store. Happy reading! Kelly PS: Do you have trouble sleeping? If so, I highly recommend Nothing Much Happens, Bedtime Stories for Grown-ups by Kathryn Nicolai. Apparently, Kathryn also lives in Michigan. I don't know her, but I'm obsessed with these bedtime stories because they are designed to put you to sleep, and her voice is very soothing, but they are also wonderful. If you are in the mood for delightful, feel-good stories, check them out here. PSS: I have to give one television show a plug...I was listening to a podcast featuring a former classmate from Kenyon, and she suggested a Swedish show called The Restaurant. IT IS SO GOOD. It's winter here in Detroit, and bleak bleak bleak, so I figured, like me, you might want to light some candles and curl up with a good drama. This one is cutting into my reading time, which is the highest praise from me. Let me know what you think!! Leigh Newman: Leigh Newman's collection Nobody Gets Out Alive (Scribner) was long-listed for the National Book Award for Fiction and The Story Prize. Her stories have appeared in the Paris Review, Harper's, Best American Short Stories 2020, Best American Mystery and Suspense 2023, Tin House, McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, One Story and Electric Literature, and have been awarded a Pushcart prize and an American Society of Magazine Editors' fiction prize. Still Points North (Dial Press), her memoir about growing up in Alaska, was a finalist for the National Book Critic Circle's John Leonard prize. In 2020, she received the Paris Review's Terry Southern Prize for “humor, wit, and sprezzatura." Newman's essays and book reviews have appeared in The New York Times, Bookforum, Vogue, O The Oprah Magazine, and other magazines. When not writing, she looks after her two dogs, two kids, and one cat. Goals include: goats and more chickens. Podcast Host: Kelly Fordon's latest short story collection, I Have the Answer (Wayne State University Press, 2020), was chosen as a Midwest Book Award Finalist and an Eric Hoffer Finalist. Her 2016 Michigan Notable Book, Garden for the Blind (WSUP), was a Michigan Notable Book, an INDIEFAB Finalist, a Midwest Book Award Finalist, an Eric Hoffer Finalist, and an IPPY Awards Bronze Medalist. Her first full-length poetry collection, Goodbye Toothless House (Kattywompus Press, 2019), was an Eyelands International Prize Finalist and an Eric Hoffer Finalist. It was later adapted into a play by Robin Martin and published in The Kenyon Review Online. She is the author of three award-winning poetry chapbooks and has received a Best of the Net Award and Pushcart Prize nominations in three different genres. She teaches at Springfed Arts in Detroit.

Kathryn Nicolai, creator of the Nothing Much Happens podcast, learns at an early age to diminish her own needs. She never wants to become a problem for other people, so she pretends like she's always okay. When she gets an opportunity to study abroad in Italy, a difficult experience with her host family causes her to retreat further into herself. It's only when she feels the compassionate concern of someone who tells her it's okay to have needs that she learns that it's okay to take up space.Listen to Ginger Zee's Meditative Story, "I'm not just observing the winds, I'm riding them": https://listen.meditativestory.com/GingerZeePIOListen to Nothing Much Happens: https://www.nothingmuchhappens.comListen to Kathryn's short meditation podcast, First This: https://www.nothingmuchhappens.com/first-thisFind Kathryn's book, Nothing Much Happens: Cozy and Calming Stories to Soothe Your Mind and Help You Sleep: https://bookshop.org/p/books/nothing-much-happens-cozy-and-calming-stories-to-soothe-your-mind-and-help-you-sleep-kathryn-nicolai/14382227?ean=9780143135913If this episode resonates with you, we'd love to hear from you. A very sleepy original story about a sunset stroll on Sleep Mountain with the old man, Bodhi and Ninja. Tonight's episode from Sleep Mountain is an original story by Evelyn Rivers and me called The Hidden Forest of Dreams. I'll be reading it twice, the first time will have some gentle music and sleepy sounds in the background, the second time through will be just the story a little slower, much the same way Kathryn Nicolai does with her original stories about the village of Nothing Much in her wonderful bedtime story podcast, Nothing Much Happens. She has been such an inspiration and a friend to me and if you haven't yet heard her podcast, I highly recommend it. You can find it at https://www.nothingmuchhappens.com. It's your support that allows me to be your bedtime storyteller and meditation guide. For just $4.99 a month, you'll have immediate access to the entire archive of over 350 episodes and all the weekly stories & meditations a day earlier. By popular request, you can now listen to the stories, meditations and audiobook chapters all organized into their own separate, easy-to-use feeds. Even on Spotify. :). To join or learn more, visit https://listentosleep.supportingcast.fm. You can also leave a tip or buy a shareable audiobook of the longer books I read on Listen To Sleep Plus. It's a great way to support the podcast and get some extra bedtime stories without a monthly subscription. Each one is available to own for just $5.50 as chapterized mp3s that will play on any MP3 player. You can find them at https://www.listentosleep.com/store. Sleep well.
In this original story for the Sleep Mountain series, we'll spend a warm autumn day with mama bear and her cubs in the madrone grove across the canyon. In 2023, every month, I'm going to read at least one original story for you that I wrote myself. The stories are about life here on the mountain, ours as well as all the animals, with some fiction and maybe even a little fantasy woven in. For these episodes, I'll be reading each story twice, once at my normal pace and then once again a bit slower, much the same way Kathryn Nicolai does with her original stories about the village of Nothing Much in her wonderful bedtime story podcast, Nothing Much Happens. A inspiração veio do anúncio do lançamento de NO FINAL NADA ACONTECE: HISTÓRIAS RELAXANTES PARA ACALMAR A MENTE E DORMIR BEM. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pecasraras/message

Late at night, as I was listening to one of my fave sleep podcasts, "Nothing Much Happens", spoken and written by the wonderfully enchanting Kathryn Nicolai, she said these two words: "Ordinary miracles" and I knew what I had to share with you. In this episode, written in a time when I've been experiencing a lot of rage, anger, frustration, physical pain, and general overwhelm... I decided it would help all of us to focus on ordinary miracles. This can be especially useful as the impending doom of Thanksgiving and other big holidays swiftly approach us. I'm doing my best to notice the little, and sometimes not so little, miracles that help shape and uplift my life each day, and I hope my little stories will help remind you of your own little daily miracles.

There’s a reason why so many cultures have used storytelling in a myriad of ways over history, but one primary reason is it’s a way for people to connect to each other, to understand things, to know what to pay attention to, and to heal from past wounds. Kathryn Nicolai has always been a storyteller and somebody who told herself bedtime stories as a young child to fall asleep. For someone with a condition called aphantasia, which is the inability to visualize mental images, overlapped with a severely deficient autobiographical memory, Kathryn is always present in the moment, a state that she celebrates in her book, a collection of bedtime stories called Nothing Much Happens. She returns on the show with Timothy J. Hayes, Psy.D. to dissect some concepts from her book and share why she finds the small mundane details captivating and something to enjoy and be grateful for. She also talks about her podcasting journey and how she’s using the platform to use her voice to reach out to people by telling stories.Love the show? KATHRYN NICOLAI Host of the popular Nothing Much Happens podcast shares indispensable toolkit for relaxing body and mind to help fall asleep With everything going on in the world, is anyone getting enough quality sleep these days? Whether keeping up with the impending election has upped your screen time or virtual work and learning has upped your caffeine intake, Kathryn Nicolai, host of the popular podcast Nothing Much Happens, is here to help get you relaxed and asleep in no time. Nicolai has crafted a healthy way to help readers who struggle to fall asleep, wake in the middle of the night, or carry their anxiety with them during the day, through the timeless act of reading bedtime stories. When Kathryn Nicolai launched her podcast Nothing Much Happens in 2018 she hoped to put her nearly two decades of experience as a yoga and meditation instructor to use by helping listeners quiet the mind and fall asleep. For each episode, she would write soothing stories that both eased her listeners into a peaceful slumber and taught the principles of mindfulness—so that waking hours might become sweet and serene, as well. Two years later, Nicolai’s podcast has become one of the most recommended and listened to podcasts for finding rest. Just this spring, Refinery29, Bustle, and Well+Good, said it was the perfect podcast for bedtime, and Nicolai reached 25 million episode downloads. Now, she has transferred her stories and insights onto the page in her new book Nothing Much Happens: Cozy and Calming Stories to Soothe Your Mind and Help You Sleep.

This week’s guest, Kathryn Nicolai, has a voice that soothes the soul, and since her podcast, Nothing Much Happens, launched in April 2018, she has gently encouraged more than two million people to snuggle into their duvet and fall asleep. When we were little, if you were lucky, I bet someone read to you to see you off to sleep, but remarkably, at some point we forget the pleasure that used to bring us, meaning that bedtime stories for adults are just not a ‘thing’, or they weren’t until now. There clearly is a need though, as Kathryn’s podcast has become an international sensation. But before Nothing Much Happens, Kathryn was - and still is - a yoga instructor, and owns her own studio in Michigan. So today’s episode covers two areas really - firstly, how Kathryn found solace in yoga at a difficult time in her life, and how she started her own business at a relatively young age; secondly how the simple, perfect idea of bedtime stories for adults took shape in the form of Nothing Much Happens, and how trusting your gut can lead you down paths you never expected. In this episode we discuss: - Kathryn's early life and her desire to be a writer from a young age - Studying Italian and Spanish at school and university, and never using either of them in her professional life! - How she found yoga as a respite from injury, exhaustion, anxiety and an eating disorder - Her early yoga teachers and the mentors she had in her yoga career - The growth of the yoga industry and how Kathryn has kept her business constant in a time of shifting trends - Starting a business at 25, and why a lack of fear means starting a business at a young age can be a positive move - How a good idea comes from having a lot of ideas, and moving forward with them if you think that's the right thing to do - Goat yoga! - The rise of women in yoga, including as teachers, from an ancient tradition of male leaders, and building a feminist angle into her yoga business - Where the idea for Nothing Much Happens came from and she went about launching the podcast - Finding a need, and filling it with something quality to build a successful business - Her evening pre-sleep routine - Whether the stories are autobiographical and where the ideas come from - The science of sleep - What's next for her - the book deal is on the horizon! Most Canadians are getting enough sleep but statistics reveal the numbers are dropping and the quality of that rest continues to suffer. Figuring out how to improve our sleep patterns has led to a confusing environment filled with pharmaceuticals, natural health products, and even supplements of chemicals naturally found in our bodies. On this week’s episode of The Super Awesome Science Show, we crawl under the covers of sleep science to find out what may work best to help us get some rest. I talk with neuroscientist, Dr. Michael Antle at the University of Calgary, about the biology of sleep and why it can be difficult to get the quality we need. We also examine the different options to help us find that slumber. The answer may lie not in supplementation but supine poses. We then explore a traditional method to help us get to sleep. Scientifically it’s known as bibliotherapy but most of us call it bedtime stories. I talk with Kathryn Nicolai who has a podcast designed to give adults an enjoyable night’s rest through relaxing and enjoyable storytelling. In our SASS class, we explore one reason kids don’t get enough sleep, school start times. We learn from Dr. Geneviève Gariépy that an early school bell could mean problems for students’ performance and weight. According to recent statistics, 40% of Canadian adults suffer with some sort of sleep disorder. If you are one of the 40%, you have probably tried a few things to help you fall asleep, but have you ever thought about trying a podcast? Kathryn Nicolai is on a mission to help people fall asleep and stay asleep through her successful podcast, Nothing Much Happens: Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups. Each episode features a simple yet rewarding nighttime story with an adult flair. Nothing Much Happens has officially joined Corus Entertainment's podcast division, Curiouscast, and we are thrilled to have her joining us today! Guest: Kathryn Nicolai Host of the podcast, Nothing Much Happens
Go behind the scenes of one of this year's hottest podcasts, Nothing Much Happens-Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups. Molly and Angela talk with creator, writer and narrator Kathryn Nicolai about the inspiration behind Nothing Much Happens. Born from the stories Kathryn told herself as a child and combined with her training as a yoga instructor, the podcast has launched with amazing results. Kathryn talks about being a bit overwhelmed by the success, and feeling responsible to the many listeners who now really depend on her to help them sleep. Her soothing voice and "sloth energy" are delightful to hear and learn from.
When Kathryn Nicolai decided to launch a podcast Nothing Much Happens: Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups, she didn't plan much fuss or fanfare. After all, she was a yoga teacher, not a writer. Since she was a small child, she'd told herself bedtime stories to get to sleep, and that's what she was sharing with other people to help them doze off. 'A little creative project, that's all', she thought.13 episodes later, it had been listened to over a million times. That's an extraordinary number for any new podcast, never mind a little indie one from someone with very little public profile. There are some terrific lessons in our conversation. Kathryn's just launching her second series of Nothing Much Happens, and we talk about how she's approached it. We get into exactly how she writes and records, and how she's gone from almost no social media presence to having a community of fans who can't get enough. We also talk about Kathryn's journey of discovering herself as a writer, and how it's already become central to her daily life. She recalls: "My brother sent me a text a couple of weeks after I launched and he said, why does your voice make me cry? And I said, I don't know, but I cry when I read them sometimes. And it's just that feeling of being in that really open, vulnerable emotional space that just opens the floodgates for me."I learn about aphantasia for the first time, which Kathryn has: a condition where she doesn't visualise pictures in her head. We talk about how she brings the senses and emotions in her stories so powerfully to life, in tales where, literally, nothing else much happens.Whether you've got a niggling dream you'd like to bring to life, have an urge to launch a podcast yourself, or just want to know that anything really is possible, this is such a great listen.Find out more at creativelifeshow.com.
