Hello friends! It's the second Thursday of the month and that means a great conversation with friend and and now-former colleague Andrew Moss regarding the tools that we developed together as I was training to solo hike across northern England in 2023.This one's about the tool that is really behind all the other tools: “I am not my thoughts.”In today's conversation you'll hear about how this idea has shaped each of our lives and how differently it has shown up for each of us. Andrew and I also each give you a way to try it out if you'd like!About the Series… It's really a podcast within a podcast! In these "Waking up: The Tools” conversations Andrew and I discuss the essential tools we developed that helped me transform my experience and grow into the person who hiked all by myself across northern England in 2023… After needing a wheelchair to go more than a few steps in 2011.FYI My hike was taking place exactly 2 years ago right now! To celebrate I am reading from my memoir, Waking Up, throughout May in a series of Instagram lives which you can access here. We've called this series Waking up: The Tools because they're featured in my book, Waking Up: How I Grew to Love My Body and My Self While Solo-Hiking Across Northern England (available everywhere you get your audiobooks and Amazon in paperback and e-book format.)Each Waking Up Tools Conversation is hosted by Pathfinders, the amazing platform that exists to amplify good people doing good work in the world. Andrew is the CEO and cofounder of Pathfinders and shares what it's all about in this episode. Please visit the Pathfinders.social website if you're in need of some hope or inspiration today – and if you're doing good work in the world please click the “Add your voice” button and share about your vision for a better world and what you are doing to bring it about. For over 30 years, Andrew Moss has dedicated his life to helping others achieve their potential, proudly bearing the title of "Coach." His journey began in his youth, when he himself experienced the transformative power of coaches and teachers who believed in him and helped him realize possibilities beyond his own expectations. This profound impact inspired Andrew to pursue a career in coaching, hoping to provide the same sense of well-being and possibility for others. Throughout his distinguished career, Coach Moss has been entrusted by a diverse array of clients, including Olympians, CEOs, students, social impact leaders, professionals in the arts, entrepreneurs, and fellow coaches. The wide range of clients he has worked with not only inspires him but also reinforces the universality of the human desire for growth and self-improvement. Andrew's professional journey has been marked by unique experiences that have enriched his coaching practice. He began his career in high-performance sports, working with elite athletes, including Olympic and World Champions. Over time, he transitioned to coaching other coaches and advising talent development experts across various Olympic sports. A pivotal moment in Andrew's career occurred in 2016 when he attended a performance conference in New York City. There, he discovered that his talent for helping athletes unlock their potential was applicable to anyone with ambition, work ethic, and a desire to realize their dreams. This realization led him to expand his coaching practice, reaching out to individuals from all backgrounds who are seeking personal and professional growth. As a devoted father to four daughters, Andrew finds daily inspiration in setting a positive example for his children. His commitment to social issues, particularly those relating to youth and Indigenous people in Canada, adds depth and purpose to his work. In 2019, he undertook a 600km hike across northern Canada in memory of a young Indigenous boy who tragically died while trying to escape from a residential school in the 1960s. Coach Moss also collaborates with Chicago-based One Solution and their inner-city youth program, Rebels for Peace. Through this work, he has had the pleasure of meeting inspiring young leaders dedicated to shaping a better future for youth in Chicago by educating them about the mind from as early as Grade 4. Andrew Moss's three-decade-long career as a coach is a testament to his unwavering dedication to helping others achieve greatness. Drawing on his own experiences and the wisdom he has gained from years of coaching, he continues to inspire and empower individuals from all walks of life to reach for the stars and realize their dreams. We recorded back in late summer, and here is a testament to the power of this conversation: just this morning I was speaking to my teen, and remembering today's guest, Shane Trotter, telling about research on drug addiction. This research was called the "rat playground," in which the positive societies that the rats lived in during the research made it easy for them to turn away from the powerful drugs – like cocaine – that were available 24/7 in the playground. If you need some hope that things will be okay, THIS is your conversation. As a young adult, Shane developed a kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder called Pino OCD. And like me with my tendon challenges over the last decade, Shane has found this to be as much a gift as anything else. He wouldn't be who he is today without Pino OCD. Shane has written a great book, Setting the Bar, which is out just this week and which I know you're going to love. We discuss Setting the Bar, so you'll get a flavor for it. If you're in a place that feels not of your choosing, where the daily grind is pulling you down and it feels like there are no good choices, I'm glad you are here because this conversation will help. Today I bring you a conversation with amazing coach Andrew Moss, who – as you'll hear – went on a journey of discovery a number of years ago that started with an old friend asking him the question "How do you want your kids to remember you?" It was a difficult time in Andrew's life, and this question set him on a trajectory full of joy, gratitude, and kindness. Once Andrew understood the implications of that question, he set out to remake his life with purpose. In this episode, we talk with Andrew Moss and his story from being a kid that liked to bring people together to later making that his career. This sounds like a simple and linear path, but like most stories, it's more about the challenges we faced, and the insights we had on the way that's important. And Andrew's life and career is example of that. His inspiration to unlock the dormant potential we all have inside with his clients came from struggling with not seeing his own. His ability to really see someone for who they are coming from experiencing how it was to truly be seen by his own coach and mentor. His focus on helping others came from realizing and looking honestly at how much he was thinking about himself. Join us in exploring the link between Olympic athletes, social impact leaders, rethinking the student experience and potential, and healing our planet! We hope you find Andrew as inspiring as we do!! Here's a favorite quote from the podcast: "We need to connect people from all diverse sets of backgrounds and human experiences into a conversation about what the human experience is all about. What it's been for them, and what it's been for everybody else because THAT'S what is going to bring humanity back together and heal the planet - understanding that we're all the same." We explore topics like: How to bring the best out of people. Uncovering what you have inside instead of teaching information Unlocking what we are not seeing that stops us from being who we are The link between Olympic athletes and doing good in the world. Going beyond doing what you're supposed to do, and finding what really matters to you Going from trying to "be someone" to listen to your internal wisdom. How even his body transformed from letting go of stress and pressure. Seeing neutrally what we are creating in our life, without judging it. And much more! If you like it, please let us know by reviewing our podcast on iTunes! :) More about Andrew: My professional career has provided many unique experiences, all of which my clients benefit from. I chose to be a coach from the very start of my career and have never looked back. For the first two decades, I was in the high-performance sports world starting out as a coach working with elite athletes including Olympic and World Champions and from there I moved into roles coaching other coaches and talent development experts across a range of Olympic sports. In 2016 I attended a performance conference in New York City and heard top talent experts from many different contexts, business, arts, education, medicine, and sport, all speaking on the same topic and I realized that my gift for helping athletes see something new in themselves was applicable to any group of people with ambition, work ethic and a desire to realize their own most inspiring dreams. That insight led me to begin my current efforts in private coaching where I work with talented and driven people with big dreams and a feeling of frustration about the state of the world, and determination to do something about it. Personally, I am a father to four daughters and have learned so much from them; I’m passionate about social issues, especially those of Indigenous people in Canada. In 2019, I spent two and half weeks hiking over 600km across northern Canada in memory of the death of a young indigenous boy in the 1960’s who was trying to escape from a residential school and return to his family. I wrote a post about this experience here. I’m also an avid sailor and skier and love to be in nature - you can catch my morning sunrise walks on my Instagram
