With the arrival of the new year, many people view this as the ideal time to figure out the changes they'd like to see and make in themselves as part of a new year, new you mentality. But as we all know, keeping those resolutions and achieving change is not easy work. It takes commitment, patience and dedication. It can be easy to fail if we make huge, sweeping goals for the new year instead of focusing on a few small, implementable changes. Thankfully, Tracey Marchese, a professor of practice in the School of Social Work in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, is here to help. Marchese is a big proponent of small tweaks leading to sustainable change. She offers tips and best practices for sticking to those New Year's Resolutions, provides self-care and self-help tips to help you achieve the change you want to see, examines how our mental health and well-being impacts our overall well-being, and discusses ways to deal with seasonal affective disorder.

What happens when a former operations leader takes the leap into the role of Chief Revenue Officer? We had an insightful discussion with Karen Gallantry. Her story illuminates the power of balancing operational demands with understanding human dynamics. Karen shares her unique perspective on how diverse experiences across technology and operations can pave the way for leadership success. The episode uncovers the intricacies of maintaining a well-aligned sales organisation in the throes of business scaling. Karen helps us explore the evolving responsibilities of a CRO, especially within subscription models that prioritise long-term success and customer loyalty as much as immediate sales. We debate different organisational structures, making a compelling case for integrating sales, pre-sales, and customer success under unified strategy and execution. Our conversation takes a deeper dive into the psychological aspects of team performance and operations scaling. We discuss the importance of transparency and feedback loops in building trust and ensuring psychological safety within teams. We would love you to follow us on LinkedIn! https://www.linkedin.com/company/amplified-group/

Why are human dynamics of mergers and acquisitions so challenging? In this episode Warden Hoffman outlines his observations, findings and ways of working when it comes to organizations and teams that merge. Warden developed this curiosity early in his career and after being exposed to M&A in many of his roles he found himself consulting to numerous organizations and teams post-merger.  We explore a series of questions: What are the human forces that slow down the creation of a new entity post-merger? Why former organizational identities matter so much? Why are mergers prone to create competitive dynamics, even when that's not needed and what are the competing for? What are some practical ways of addressing these very challenging dynamics, when planning a merger or leading merged teams? The Lateral Dialogues

Throughout human history we have been developing and deploying technological solutions in the service of organizational and human needs. But after technology gets introduced, we may quickly find ourselves operating in the service of the needs of technology more than our own. Our tendency to idealize its possibilities and benefits, may quickly make us give up authority to technology to lead us, and lose our capacity to think as every situation requires us to. We adjust our lifestyles or work processes to serve the tech interface, sometimes forgetting that it should serve us. Why do we do that? And how could we approach technology, so that we benefit from it and effectively manage its consequences? We are joined by Dr Nick Waggett who has been extensively studying the dynamics of organizations through a systems-psychodynamics and socio-technical systems perspective and particularly researched technology use in public service organizations (UK healthcare). Nick helps us explore: why do we abdicate our authority to tech systems, and how does this impact our capacity to lead? What is the management focus when implementing technology and what might get lost? In our everyday psychology, how does a tech interface become our mental image and overall filter of the world? How are current social dynamics a result of the human interactions within tech interfaces? Finally, what can we learn from our hopes and fears associated with the current AI evolution?  Dr Nick Waggett is the course leader of the Tavistock professional doctorate "Advanced practice and research: consultation and the organisation" https://tavistockandportman.ac.uk/courses/advanced-practice-and-research-consultation-and-the-organisation-d10d/ The Lateral Dialogues are hosted by Warden Hoffman and Petros Oratis, managing partners at The Lateral Space http://www.thelateralspace.com/

Introduction: Kat introduces Pam August, founder and president of Connecting Potentials, as a visionary leader in the realm of organizational development and consulting. Pillars of Pam's Work: Pam's approach revolves around three fundamental pillars: organizational development, team effectiveness, and relationship systems. She emphasizes strategy and culture alignment within organizations, highlighting the importance of coaching and embodied development practices like yoga and mindfulness. Insights into Human Systems: Human systems are complex and adaptive, unlike technical systems, making them unpredictable and emergent. Pam discusses the challenges of change management, citing examples of how humans resist change due to the metabolic cost of active thought and action. Compliance vs. Commitment: Pam distinguishes between compliance, complacency, and commitment, illustrating how different approaches yield different results. She shares anecdotes about compliance, complacency, and commitment in various contexts, emphasizing the importance of engaging individuals to build commitment. Navigating Organizational Culture: Pam delves into the unconscious, implicit, and invisible aspects of organizational culture, stressing the need to make unconscious biases and assumptions conscious. She advocates for intentional team dynamics, where roles and contributions are made explicit and visible to foster collaboration and alignment.   Unveiling Potential: Pam introduces her forthcoming book, emphasizing the inherent capacity for exponential impact within individuals, teams, and cultures. She highlights the interconnectedness of personal and collective potential, setting the stage for a deeper exploration.   The Three Pillars of Action: Pam unveils three foundational actions—intend, notice, and move—as catalysts for navigating dynamic environments. Through intentionality and acute awareness, individuals and teams can drive meaningful progress towards desired outcomes.   Intention vs. Outcome: Drawing a clear distinction between intention and outcome, Pam underscores the importance of aligning personal intentions with collective objectives. By setting intentions grounded in purpose and embodying desired states of being, individuals can foster authentic connection and collaboration.   Meta Skills and Collective Intentions: Pam introduces the concept of meta skills as amplified intentions, transcending individual agendas to shape collective experiences. By fostering shared intentions and meta skills, teams can cultivate a cohesive culture of engagement and alignment.   The Power of Noticing: Through a compelling anecdote, Pam illustrates the transformative impact of acute awareness in team dynamics. By actively noticing underlying patterns and implicit barriers, individuals can initiate meaningful dialogue and catalyze positive change.   Purpose-driven Vision: Addressing challenges in articulating mission and vision, Pam emphasizes the importance of grounding organizational goals in purpose. Rather than fixating on semantics, individuals and startups can align their actions with core values, fostering organic growth and evolution.         Unpacking Potential: A Deep Dive Pam elaborates on the narrative journey within her upcoming book, "Potential: How to Connect What's Already There for Exponential Impact." Through storytelling, she guides readers in shifting their mindset from focusing on problems to recognizing and harnessing potential. Pam emphasizes understanding the human operating systems and capacity to act, feel, and think, supported by insights from neuroscience. Dimensions of Connection: She outlines experiences of disconnection characterized by strain, swirl, or being stuck, contrasting with the state of connection marked by energy, ease, and effectiveness. Pam introduces the practice of "intend, notice, and move" as a transformative tool, backed by behavioral and neuroscience principles, and shares practical applications through storytelling in all three dimensions. Building Tools for Exploration: Pam discusses the inclusion of various tools in the book to empower readers in their exploration journey further. These tools aim to facilitate deeper understanding and application of the concepts discussed. Where to Find More: Listeners are directed to Pam's website, connectingpotential.ca, where they can access additional resources and information about the book. "Potential" by Pam August is available on Amazon, and Pam welcomes inquiries and engagement on LinkedIn. Conclusion: Kat and Pam reflect on the challenges of integrating these practices into organizational culture, underscoring the long-term benefits of investing in alignment and commitment upfront to avoid rework and misalignment later on. As the conversation unfolds, Pam and Kat illuminate the transformative potential of intentionality and action, inviting listeners to embrace a journey of self-discovery and collective empowerment. By navigating the interplay between intention and manifestation, individuals can unlock their inherent capacity for exponential impact and cultivate thriving cultures of collaboration and innovation. The host expresses gratitude for the insightful discussion and looks forward to further exploration. Pam acknowledges the synergistic nature of their conversation, highlighting the unique insights generated through collaboration. About Our Guest Today: Pam August guides organizations, teams, and leaders to unlock the potential that is already there for transformational results. She was the director of culture activation at WestJet, one of Canada's most admired corporate cultures, where for fourteen years she was a fierce champion and developer of people and culture as a key enabler of strategic success. Today, she is a trusted partner for high-performance organizations around the world through her firm, Connecting Potential. With deep and diverse experience, she knows what it takes to uncover, align, and activate the best of what organizations already offer and what they can develop into. Pam is a sought-after speaker, facilitator, coach, and co creator with a strong foundation of lifelong learning. She has a Bachelor of Adult Education, a Master of Arts in Leadership, and is certified as an Organization and Relationships Systems (ORSC) and brain-based coach. We continue with the Lectures in Caribbean Thought. We introduced the concepts of Power, position, privilege, and the foundations of Knowledge and Hegemony of faith within the development of western civilization that affects Caribbean thinking and reality. This is compendium of perspectives on power that examine how the status quo uses strategy to extend, establish or maintain power which then imposes on Caribbean Thought and poses problems for human (Caribbean) progress. This involves looking at the Development of Power, Privilege, Position & Status Within the Foundations of Historical literature and Divine Intervention. The presentation will be interdisciplinary but benefits from the discipline of Liberal Studies and liberal arts, lifting up issues of human values and ethics. We will consider and make conclusions about the foundations of knowledge and the hegemony of faith as we present our analysis. It uses anthropological methods and other primary and secondary sources to ascertain data as well as explore the historical archives. Further the Lecture presentation, due to the dynamism of the Lecturer/presenter, writing within a post-colonial milieu will consider social media as one of the Greatest Victory for Masses and Social Movements and Caribbean peoples, that will upend Strategies of Power by The Status Quo and the culture of violence in society? Moreover, the answer may lie in an exploration of The Development of Power, Privilege, Position and Status Within the Foundations of Historical literature and Divine Intervention. I am here talking about the foundations of knowledge and the hegemony of faith and the cultures containing this hegemony. So, we will begin by asking, "Do the Poems of Homer and Hesiod's Theogony and the Biblical Stories provide a Basis to Begin to Understand the Problem and Consequences of Human Dynamics in the Development of Human Society? Further, language, thought and history become part of any examination and reflection of culture involving philosophical inquiry. "The negro is not. Any more than the Whiteman," Frantz Fanon, in "Black Skin White Masks," psychoanalyses of the "colonized" (systematically-controlled) man/woman, he removes the dominant view within comparisons, striving for the empowered self. According to Homi Bhabha, here the familiar alignment of colonial [controlled] subjects is disturbed by a break, a pause from the usual to reveal a truly authentic self. In fact, when we hear of Jamaica or the Caribbean, we think of beautiful islands of paradise with sun, sea and sand, reggae music, cannabis and "irie" people like Usain Bolt- people who are living out their best dreams, desires, and lives. But this book analyzes this motif, given the historical and current economic and political situation in Jamaica and the Caribbean / the "Global South." In an attempt to escape the adverse realities of poverty, inequality, and injustice, the people of the Global South find themselves in north metropolises with very little agency and minimal change to their lives. In fact, except for the use of cleaning neoliberal waste, the immigrant is usually portrayed as an alien with three heads and big sharp teeth seeking to steal and destroy the profit and disrupt society. As such we will discuss Black, brown, and Pan-African struggles for economic prosperity, justice, and freedom and consider efforts, abilities, or inabilities to chart their own futures since decolonization and realize real political independence and economic prosperity. Perhaps, they are charting their own course by the few corrupt of the status quo who are benefiting from partnerships with the neoliberal regime of the "Washington Consensus," advocates of the "bureaucratic phenomenon," while the masses are left behind…” We explore history and thinking from a sub-altern view as we think about Privilege, Power, Position and Status within the development of society. https://theneoliberal.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theneoliberal/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theneoliberal/support

Shermin Voshmgir is a leading thinker in the world of Web 3. This podcast explores the intersections between human dynamics and Web 3 developments. Shermin discusses the new possibilities of more democratic and decentralised ways of being and organising, and shares her growing concerns about how old politics, ego-driven behaviours, and simply the lack of awareness around potential dangers. There are tensions around transparency and privacy, algorithmic bias, and lack of participation in decentralised systems which leaves a few people making decisions. Power dynamics and biases become embedded in new DAOs and networks, making them difficult to influence and change. Shermin shares her new adventures in the domain of agriculture as she works with her partner to bring together Web 3 technologies, such as tokenization, that will support more sustainable farming. We are all entering the new world of Web 3, and Shermin Voshmgir is a brilliant translator who brings that space to life for those of us struggling to understand it - a must-listen episode!  Bio  Shermin is the author of the best-selling book “Token Economy“, the founder of Token Kitchen and BlockchainHub Berlin. In the past, she was the director of the Research Institute for Cryptoeconomics at the Vienna University of Economics which she also co-founded and a curator of the infamous project TheDAO back in 2016. She is currently setting up a data-driven farm in Portugal with her Partner where they investigate how to tokenize agricultural assets and sustainable ecosystem services such as soil quality or CO2 capture with the support of hardware wallets and sensor technology. Shermin studied Information Systems Management at the Vienna University of Economics and film-making in Madrid. Under her alter ego KAMIKAT.SE she has also created a series of audio-visual works. She is Austrian, with Iranian roots, and now lives in Portugal where she works on the intersection of technology, agriculture, art & social science. Her biggest strength is to make complex issues easily understandable to a wide audience without losing the depth or scope of the issues she writes or talks about. Shermin has a long track record of public speaking about Blockchain, Cryptocurrencies, the Web3 and the future of technologies in general – from prestigious community conferences such as TedX, The Next Web or Re:publica, to private events for companies and institutions such as Vodafone, Audi, IMF and the Wordbank. She has a multidisciplinary perspective of how Web3 will impact different areas of society. She believes that Web3 and its tokenized applications can shift the dynamics of our socio-economic systems. Her focus is to make technology accessible to a non-tech audience so that all those who use technology can also take part in the decision-making process of the technology they use. The Story Of A Merger Between Two Top Teams with Andrea Linehan

Introduction: Andrea Linehan is listed as one of the top 30 most influential Marketeers. She is a regular speaker at conferences and universities on subjects such as Marketing, Branding, Financial Inclusion, Social Entrepreneurship, Fintech start-ups/scale-ups and many more. After 10 years in Oman she returned to Ireland to join, as CMO, a FinTech start-up  called GRID Finance.  After 5 years she joined Currency Fair. Currency Fair Enterprises and Assembly Payments merged in April of 2021 to form the new company called Zai. Andrea holds a BSc(HONS)in Finance and is a Postgraduate of the Chartered Institute of Marketeers. She hold an MBA from Trinity College Dublin and is a Chartered Management Accountant.    Podcast Episode Summary This episode explores the Merger of two scale-up companies, Currency Fair Enterprises and Assembly Payments, and the work involved in bringing two top teams together. Conscious of the anaemic success rates of merged entities Andrea shares how her company and especially because of her CEO Paul Byrne, committed the time, multiple workshops across a diverse population of representatives to get aligned on the fundamentals: Purpose, Mission, Vision, Attributes and Personality. This work was completed against a backdrop of business as usual, Covid and the regulatory/legal machinations of combining two entities. Much of the work was completed over zoom.    Points made over the episode Andrea shares how she started her academic life studying computers but by year three discovered she needed to pivot to Finance and Accounting.  Andrea initially figured she would join one of the big four but after exploring what these entities might mean she joined Aer Rianta and a role in the Middle East  She moved to Oman without a job and quickly found her footing. She found herself too in Oman. She was shaped as a woman and learnt so much about different cultures  Fintech found Andrea. When Andrea returned to Ireland, after 10 Years in the Middle East she was curious to know what direction to take her career. She chose to do an MBA at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.  She was fortuitously introduced to the two founders of a FinTech start-up by her Professor, Eoin O Neill of TCD.  She joined the FinTech company called GRID Finance and worked there for five  years Andrea then shares the story of the merger of FinTech Currency Fair, where she joined as CMO and Assembly Payments, made in part possible by the investment of Standard Chartered Ventures.  The Merger was announced in April 2021.  Andrea describes how the Merger made two scale-ups slow down when so much else about the company was moving at pace.  Two macro forces, The Merger process and Covid meant a lot of moving parts and added complexity.  All of this work was happening over zoom  The two top teams, the task force and many colleagues had to build trust over zoom The success of this process was in large measure down to the willingness of the companies to take the time to form a task group and do the work necessary to peel back the layers to determine what really mattered for each entity in terms of values, mission, visions, attributes &personality  The two companies, Currency Fair and Assembly Payments realised they were enormously aligned.   A proposal made by Andrea to the Board to look at the Branding for the merged entities made these various conversations meaningful and possible.  The process involved bringing the two top teams together along with representatives from both sides of the business from different parts of the business to form a task team.  Importantly the two entities did not go at this work alone and instead brought in an independent expert from Human Dynamics to support the work.  The new company name emerged as Zai.  This first piece of tangible work completed by the two merged entities instilled a lot of confidence for the future.  Andrea shares what the work entailed.  The work to create a Minimum Viable Brand. Work was completed on creating a value set and company characteristics. The Human Dynamic expert, Adam, helped align the values set with a potential North Star or Purpose for the company.  Multiple conversations and workshops were had to iron out inconsistencies, fears, concerns and areas of mistrust.   The members had to be willing to refine their work several times over many workshops and this process, where people showed up and were vulnerable sharing their concerns helped people understand each other's drivers/motivations, personalities and thinking and helped forge a team identity.  Laughter was a big factor and contributed to the success of the project on zoom.  Time for these workshop was preserved by respecting some non-negotiables included blocking out time, the “Golden Hours” of 7am to 10am in the morning.  After two years of working together via Zoom, Travel to Australia served to foster relationships further.  The Zai Leadership team met in London last week. Despite the obvious distractions of needing to work on a strategy and road map, the team was disciplined enough to spend the majority of time getting to know each other.  The Human Dynamic Expert flew to London to join the team for the week.  The team revisited the Mission, Purpose, Values, work of the previous year to assess it for its currency and fit for purpose.  The team used Hogan Psychometrics to get to understand each other better, to appreciate the gaps in personalities and needs each person had and to consider what that might mean for the team.  Two things stood out as making this work possible.  The CEO Paul Byrne wholly believes in the work of establishing Vision, Mission, Purpose and Values to build a foundation from which to operate.  The team itself was hand-picked by Paul for their commitment, passion and interest in working together as a team.  Andrea loves the work of professional development and did not expect to go on a transformational journey of her own. Over the week she was with the top team. she discovered, surprisingly, that she had a trust barrier she did not know existed.  Andrea believes the trust factor on teams unlocks so much. Finding a way to be in conversation with your colleagues about Trust is important.  Andrea did not envisage she would be so proud of the culture that Zai is creating and she is excited to embark on the next piece of work to bring an Employee Brand to life.  The company will certainly be busy in the near future. Zai expects to enter 7/10 new markets. It also expects to develop several new products and to grow its employee base from 200 to 450 A busy few years ahead.  Resources shared  www.hellozai.com

Decision making during high stress , life and death situation is difficult for most well trained first responders and the military personnel.  With that being said, many Americans have found themselves listening to soundbites and watching incomplete clips of tragic events that forever change men and women's life.  At core of each watched or listen to encounter, is a burning question of why did this event occur as it did. Do I have all the information? Was it the police officers fault? Is it the suspects fault? Is it the systems fault? The outcry for answers is often deafening. What so many armchair critics and keyboard warriors fail to understand is that there are decades of research when it comes to Human Performance and Human Dynamics. Empirically, peer reviewed research is constantly informing training commissions across the nation on the best way to approach potentially deadly situations, but we have to listen to the data and implement the findings. At the center of this research is the Force Science Institute (FSI) FSI is led by executive director Dr. William “Bill” Lewinski.  Dr. Bill Lewinski has spent the better part of his life asking critical questions about how the human body works under and incredible amount of stress.  Which is faster, Action or Reaction? What is the human experience with time distortion? How do we create experts?  What is at the route of human error and how do we mitigate against the bodies tendency toward self preservation verses the best decision when a decision must be made.  How does experiential bias impact a man or woman when faced with a decision that needs to be made in under 1 second?  During this interview with Dr. Bill, he sheds some light on a few of these questions during our time together. This is a man that has sacrificed so much in the name of science and has provided vetted solutions to help prevent injustices toward the men and women who have sworn to serve and protect the constitution of the United States and the Laws of other nations around the globe.Dr. Lewinski has testified in grand juries, coroner's inquests, arbitration hearings, and both criminal and civil cases throughout North America, in the United Kingdom and Australia. He has trained in Goju Karate (traditional Japanese Karate) since 1967. He is a regional director and a national examiner with Goju Kai Karate Do, U.S.A.  A mission of Force Science® Institute, Ltd. (FSI) is to gather experts from a variety of academic and research disciplines and a wide range of educational institutions in North America and the United Kingdom, to assist in the study of officer and subject behavior primarily in lethal force encounters.  Areas of study include action/reaction parameters, perception - including the relationship of skill level, attention and visual focus to information processing, judgment and effectiveness of action, and also attention and memory. The university researchers FSI has paired with, for research or instruction, have published over 1,000 research articles and 12 textbooks.  Force Science Institute https://www.forcescience.org/Force Science Institute Facebook PageThe Interrupted PodcastThe Interrupted Podcast WebsiteThe Interrupted Podcast Instagram PageThe Interrupted Podcast Facebook PageSteve's Instagram

“At MicroMass, we see people, not just their disease or their demographics, but the human inside. Our aim is to understand them, inspire them, change their behavior and reach them where it can make the most impact.”This is how Rob Peters, EVP, strategy; and Noah Lowenthal, executive creative director, both at MicroMass, explained their approach to changing health for the better during a recent podcast with MM+M's editor-in-chief, Larry Dobrow. The conversation took an in-depth look at how leveraging the company's Human Dynamics — the influences that help people make decisions and engage with information — can help build connections to positively affect a patient's journey.Human Dynamics and its relevance to pharma marketers and brands“Human Dynamics builds on the basis of behavioral science,” explained Peters at the outset. “We realized that we've got an opportunity to strengthen that approach and the offerings we provide to our clients by leveraging that deep understanding of human behavior and complementing it with the growing volume of data.”But it all starts by thinking about the person within the patient and building a relationship with them based on their needs or preferences.“Once we have that understanding, we can craft our creative around engaging with them in a way that adapts to their unique experience, accounting for all the changes that are going to happen with the human dynamic,” Peters went on to explain.Internally, MicroMass calls Human Dynamics “behavioral science 2.0,” a term that Lowenthal explains as, “It's one thing to uncover a behavioral psychological truth about how a certain patient with a specific condition views themselves, but, what human dynamics does is it says, ‘OK, how does that inform the creative strategy and what we're doing when a patient engages with us at different times of the day on different devices?' What we do is weave the thread of human dynamics and behavioral psychology through it all and integrate it so that there's more purpose and greater outcomes.”How Human Dynamics creates a stronger connection between brand and customerAt MicroMass, seeing a person not just as someone with diabetes (for example), but recognizing that they are also a mom, a soccer coach, a spouse and a busy executive influences the way they engage with a brand and make decisions about their condition. “By starting there, we've got a better understanding of how that person processes information, how they engage and what day-to-day dynamics might get in the way of them managing their condition,” said Peters. “That gives us a better starting point than the typical snapshot of a patient you get through doing market research.”While a lot of pharma brands talk to patients and learn valuable information in the moment, Peters mentioned that “When that patient goes home and is dealing with all these other factors that weren't discussed or taken into account, those learnings become outdated.”Part of the remedy for this kind of siloed intel, as Lowenthal sees it, is to create a connective tissue that binds teams and departments together. “Human Dynamics is a way of approaching patients that informs and unifies each team's understanding of what we're trying to accomplish,” he explained. “It's not a process, but a way of thinking that results in more authentic, relevant and engaging work for the patients who encounter it.” The future of Human DynamicsTo Peters, the future revolves around “broadening the exposure of human dynamics to potential clients in order to give them a valid reason to invest in patient marketing sooner and see the impact of their brand goals in a more effective way.Speaking a little more narrowly, Lowenthal, who was brought into MicroMass recently to elevate agency creative using Human Dynamics, said “the goal is to take the authenticity of behavioral science and connect it to the creative so that we're more connected to the human condition than what we've seen in the past.”For both Peters and Lowenthal, the industry trend is moving toward authentic emotions and feelings. “I think Human Dynamics allows us to recognize the whole human as part of a creative platform,” said Lowenthal. “And we look forward to continuing to broaden that exposure to potential clients of Human Dynamics and bring them a solution that drives their brand goals in a more effective way,” concluded Peters. The future of patients as humans is upon us.To learn more about the revolutionary Human Dynamics approach by MicroMass, visit MicroMass.com.

Sue Kenfield, founder of See It Thrive (suekenfield.com), is Kim's in-studio guest to discuss how best to get back to work, without fear, during these turbulent times.  Before they delve into this topic, they converse with Producer Steve about the silent thief, government induced inflation.  As home prices escalate, so do the real estate taxes associated with the home.  Tax increases will be on the Colorado ballot this November.  One ballot initiative to vote down is Lone Tree's massive 55% retail sales tax increase.  Read Kim's Op-Ed here:  https://kimmonson.com/featured_articles/say-no-to-lone-trees-proposed-massive-66-sales-tax-increase/.  Another proposal is a new state marijuana retail tax increase “for the children,” the Learning Enrichment and Academic Progress Program, LEAP.  There are a number of articles on Kim's website, https://kimmonson.com/featured-articles/, for reasons to vote no on this program.  It would be governed by an unelected, unaccountable board, picked by the governor, and board members pick their replacements.  Join Kim in Grand Lake for their 10th Annual U.S. Constitution Week.  For more details visit https://www.grandlakeusconstitutionweek.com/. Sue is a professional that helps people in the workplace.  Human dynamics are most important for organizational success.  Sue consults with businesses around the major ideas of resilience, conflict management, team effectiveness, leadership development and emotional intelligence.  We are now past eighteen months of the two weeks to flatten the curve.  The COVID-19/Wuhan China Virus survival rate is 99.69% for all demographics so why all this coercion and force to get people to take the COVID-19/Wuhan-China Virus experimental drug jab?  Know which vaccination you are receiving as the only FDA approved vaccination is the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty.  The original Pfizer vaccination is still under the EUA, Emergency Usage Act.  It has been stated that Comirnaty will not be distributed until the original Pfizer vaccinations have been used, https://www.theepochtimes.com/newly-approved-covid-19-vaccine-not-yet-available-in-us_3976794.html.  There are vastly different liability protections as the EUA vaccination is protected from liability and Comirnaty, as of now, is not. Pope John Paul II stated that work is what distinguishes man from all other animals.  Work brings dignity.  Man has a natural desire to be around other people to connect.  Current office practices due to COVID-19 are inhibiting interactions with co-workers.  Additionally, contributions to organizations are not properly acknowledged by supervisors.  Sue suggests collaboration out of the office such as coffee shops.   Due to immense changes within a short period of time people are exhibiting fear, burnout and stress.  We do have the ability to bounce forward by controlling our thoughts and our actions under a realistic lens.  Do not be afraid to fail as that is a natural part of life.  Do not go into the trap of hopelessness and rely on the government; instead, look at your talents and grow.  Sue concludes that you must believe in yourself and you can successfully achieve whatever your endeavors may be.

Hearts of Glass follows the tumultuous first 15 months of operation of Vertical Harvest (VH), a multi-story, state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse that grows crops while providing meaningful, competitively-paid jobs for people with disabilities. The film weaves the story of VH’s launch with the personal journeys of several employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Innovation and inclusion create a fertile environment for people and plants to grow. VH is a vertical farm on 1/10 of an acre at an elevation of 6,237 feet in Jackson, Wyoming, a mountain town with extreme seasonal fluctuations in weather, population, and demand for goods and services. The employees with disabilities, part of an underestimated, underemployed and vulnerable population, are a vital and visible part of this community-based business. Hearts of Glass is an intimate portrait of social entrepreneurship at the intersection of disability rights and sustainable, local food production.

Today’s episode features performance coach, author, and speaker, Brett Bartholomew.  Brett is the founder of “Art of Coaching™”, which works with corporations in the financial and tech sector, medical professionals, military, as well as professional sporting organizations to enhance their leadership ability through improved communication and understanding of human behavior.  Brett is the author of the best-selling book “Conscious Coaching”, and has spoken worldwide on performance and communication topics.  Brett has served as a performance coach for a diverse range of athletes, ranging from youth to Olympians, those in nearly every professional sport, as well as those in the U.S. Special Forces and Fortune 500 companies. Coaching is a rapidly evolving field.  Strength coaches must grow in a multi-disciplinary manner on a variety of levels to stay competitive and serve athletes better.  Sport skill coaches cannot simply use the same rigid cues and drill sets and methods that their coach used on them.  Rather, a thorough understanding of human learning and psychology, a more holistic model must be found to facilitate the optimal technical and tactical development of the athlete. Brett Bartholomew has evolved greatly in his time as a coach, and his diverse coaching background has given him the means to see a large problem in the field: A lack of education, skills, and emphasis in general on communication and understanding of human behavior.  Being a better communicator means acquiring better buy-in, more effort, and more enjoyment on the part of those we are coaching, and there are a lot of means by which we can improve in this arena as coaches.  On today’s show, Brett talks about why communication has been under-emphasized in coaching (despite its importance) how improving in this area can improve athlete outputs, as well as practices and exercises that coaches can utilize to improve their own leadership and communication abilities. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. View more podcast episodes at the podcast homepage. Timestamps and Main Points 3:30 Key moments in Brett’s evolution as a coach, and his drive towards an emphasis on communication in learning 11:45 Why communication is under-emphasized in most coach education programs, and why coaches are often blind to their own coaching communication abilities 20:40 Concrete outcomes of better communication on the level of the coach and athlete 26:10 How improving one’s communication can help one’s evolution as a coach and leader 38:00 Impression management in life, as well as in the coaching profession 44:10 Types of activities that can make a coach better in a chaotic environment Podcast Transcripts Email Download New Tab Joel Smith: On this show, we're always trying to find, or grab those low hanging fruits of athletic performance, whether it be training the mind, nutrition, stress, and lifestyle perception, reaction, finer points of speed biomechanics, and really anything that exists that I feel is really underrepresented in the way that we seek to give athletes their best experience I'm always looking for. When it comes to coaching, Brett Bartholomew is addressing a very significant, low hanging fruit, and that is of understanding human behavior and communicating properly with one's team, athletes, whoever you're working with in coaching. That's something that doesn't just reside in the coaching field, but is universal. And it shows in Brett's work. Brett is the founder of the Art of Coaching, where he works with many corporations, such as finance, tech, medical professionals, military, as well as sport and athletic coaches.

Monica Rivera from the You Wanna Do What? podcast gave me a great tip to download any episodes from Netflix to my iPad. George Hrab from the Geologic podcast (who gets to go to all sorts of cool stuff because of his podcast) gave me some heads up on a voltage converter. It's Rarely as Bad as It Seems When I heard the phrase "17 hours on a plane (along with some shorter flights for a total of 20 hours)" I thought it sounded like a horror story. I pictured some little punk behind me kicking my kidneys while their parents order another jack and coke from the flight attendant. In the end, even in coach, I was able to stretch my legs. I had two seats between my fellow passenger in my row and slept off and on. There were probably 3-5 small children who would occasionally cry, but it was not the nightmare I had envisioned. When I think of things that I have dreaded in the past, they are rarely as bad as you think you're going to be. Erode Your Comfort Zone I can be shy. When I go to a restaurant I'm not looking to think outside the box. When I was told that a large chunk of my schedule was planned for me, I got nervous. I didn't know where I was going, and except for a few people, I didn't know who I was with, what we were doing, and what I needed to be ready. We had assigned seats both days including assignments on who to go to lunch with. One day, Sean Desouza was going to cook authentic Indian food (I have never had Indian food). The Know Like a Trust Factor I talk about this all the time. When you create valuable content on a consistent basis, your audience trusts you and likes you. If you can share a bit of yourself, they get to know you. When people know, like, and trust you then you have influence. I know Ronsley Vaz from his "Should I Start a Podcast" show. We may have bumped into each other. I finally got to talk to him at Social Media Marketing World where I was speaking. He asked me if I would speak at We Are Podcast. I said yes on the spot. Who doesn't want to go to Australia? I saved up my pennies (and busted out a charge card) and made it happen. As I mentioned above, I was nervous. This was a new country, a new conference (for me), with new people. The first day was very good. I got to meet a lot of people. It was somewhat of the "warm up act" for the main event happening the next two days. Every speaker at this event was awesome.  Every person I met was super friendly and shared my love of podcasting. The hotel I stayed at was great.  By the end of day one, you could color me impressed, and I was ready for day two. By the end of day two, I believe I had met about 95% of the people there including Jules from Hong Kong Confidential. By the end of day two, where I once felt uncomfortable I now felt relaxed. The Speakers Retreat When I realized that I was going to be living with a bunch of people I had never met, previously this would have put me way outside my comfort zone. By this point, Ronsley had not let me down and I just went with the flow. Here again, it was not as bad as it seemed and was actually kind of fun (in the end we just slept here, and all the speakers hung out at a second house). I would start the day with some sort of healthy pancakes made from buckwheat and for toppings I had some sort of berries instead of maple syrup. Different? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely. The conversations were awesome, and the jokes and laughing were endless. More New Things The following day I had Indian food for the first time. As I was told I was a "Picky Eater" growing up, I assumed I would not like this. I loved it. Sean is launching a course in the future to show people how to cook these types of meals quickly. I'm in. I was scheduled for a session of Holographic Kinetics. I had no idea what it was, but I had heard that "it was a bit woo-woo." All I knew was Ronsley had selected a few people to do it, and I was one of them. I was not here to judge. I was all in. Holographic Kinetics is an advanced Aboriginal healing technique based on an ancient understanding of Lore, the universal laws that govern the creation, and the knowledge that everything in nature is alive and can be communicated with. Thoughts and emotions from difficult experiences in the past can become trapped in a person’s body to create realities. When experienced in the past they affect the present, which in turn affects the future. Once trapped, these energies are carried through time, negatively affecting people’s lives. These trapped energies interact with the external world, and following the law of attraction, like attracts like, they will attract to themselves similar negative experiences. More Info This was the first time I had ever tried it, and it did help me connect some dots from my past. If I'm a better, more confident person, I don't care how I got there. My New Australian Family For me, this was an experience that was truly hard to put into words. I rarely checked email, got almost no sleep, and just enjoyed the beauty of Australia, and the friendship of some truly great people. Jordan Harbinger is hilarious and his wife Jen is a walking firecracker of energy. Check out Jordan's show ( I love feedback Friday) and I went through his level 1 (free) of his Human Dynamics course. Jordan is all about learning and he shares some great insights in his course. Nicole Baldinu and Omar Zenhom are the team behind $100 MBA which I had heard of, and I had also heard of Webinar Ninja software. These two are the brains behind both those entities. I enjoyed talking books with them at breakfast one day and Omar's talk on building teams really opened my eyes Steph Taylor creates the podcast Socialite. She is always smiling and with her accent its a bit like learning about Instagram from Mary Poppins. I LOVED her presentation on having a plan for your podcast launch. Sean D'Souza - Sean is not a know it all, but yet, he seems to know everything (he is the man behind Psychotactics). His presentation on developing skills was very cool ( Energy + Confidence = Skill) and has me rethinking how I present things at the School of Podcasting. He has a podcast called Three Month Vacation. I can't wait to learn how to cook from this guy. Leanne Hughes was the Co-MC of the event and has a smile that will light up the room. She was also my hero as the volunteered to take myself, Ally, and Pat to the airport at six AM. I wish I had more time to pick her brain as she is all about making great presentations. Check out her podcast First Time Facilitator Byron Dempsey is another hero. I had plugged my iPad into to keep it as charged as possible and then forget to put it back in my book bag. Bryon was nice enough to ship it back to the States for me. Byron is a super talented videographer and helps people grow their brands with video. Laura Peterson is someone I kind of knew as I listen to her Copy that Pops podcast. She was the trooper who had to deal with a presentation clicker that did not want to participate. She is super funny and if you are in front of her, please have her to her "California Girl" imitation. If you are thinking of writing a book, she's your gal. Ange Henderson is a business consultant that is super friendly, outgoing, and was always there when we needed a food run. THANKS ANGE! She's worked with huge companies like Netflix and I could go on, but just know she's done it all. Travis Chappell dropped knowledge bombs during his presentation on how to follow up without being a pest. He's one of those guys that doesn't say much, but when he does it is hilarious. Carl Taylor seemed like a nice guy and was in a pretty good mood considering he had just had his wisdom teeth pulled. This mild-mannered guy had sold three businesses and wrote a #1 business book by the age of 25. Every time I hear the phrase Koala Bear, I will think of Carl who let me know Koala's are not bears. They are marsupials. Allison Melody is someone I had met at other conferences, but just getting to chill with people builds that relationship deeper. Her presentation on monetizing you podcast had some new strategies I had not heard of. Check out her Food Heals Podcast. Shannon Morrison is the head of operations at Amplify Media and the founder of Mighty Social World. A super nice guy, and always willing to help with anything and everything. Jason Malouin is nuts. He has a great laugh and was the co-MC of the event. Jason was a great American to Aussie translator and stopped me from getting a sunburn that would've been on a whole new level. If you're in Australia and need a portrait photographer, he's your dude. Check out his Communicator podcast. Harry Duran and Natalie Jenkins are my partners in crime at many conferences. They both make me laugh, and occasionally snort. I love them both very much. You know Harry from Podcast Junkies, and Natalie is often taking head shots at events you attend. If she can make me look good, she can make you look amazing. When I found out I was going into the Hall of Fame, Natalie was one of the first people I called to see if she would photograph it. Welcome to the show, everyone! I've been shifting the focus of the podcast a little bit lately- away from the practicalities of running a cake business (although that will always remain my main goal) and more into talking about the emotional and mental health side of running a small business. We all know that making cookies and cake pops is not really all that difficult to do, but the emotional fallout from a customer complaint or the exhaustion that comes from running a business can really be pretty hard to deal with at times. So for quite a while now I've been wanting to talk to somebody on the podcast, who has some experience with that. Then, exactly the right person appeared in my life (by popping right up in my email inbox)!  She's the amazing Laurel Harlan and she's a private practice therapist and she owns a cookie business! Listen in today to get some really awesome advice from Laurel about dealing with the  difficult emotions that tend to come up when running a business.         Laurel is from Columbia, Missouri and her first company is a private therapy practice, which she's been running for the last thirty-seven years, called Human Dynamics. Her cookie business is called Kiss Me Cookies and she's been running it for the past three years. Listen in now to find out more about Laurel and how she copes with the ups and downs of running her businesses.   Show highlights:   The way that Laurel's brain got lit up and sucked her into running a cookie business. How Laurel has to be creative in her two very different businesses. Laurel's take on why there are so many cookiers and cake makers who are dealing with mental and emotional health issues.  Laurel's notion that people with anxiety and depression actually come to baking as a way to find some relief. Developing boundaries and finding the right balance when running your business. The importance of practicing self-care while running your business. How Laurel managed to find a good balance in her business life. How Laurel had to find new ways to take care of things when her office manager retired. You will always hit potholes when running a business. Being fortunate enough to really love what you do for a living. The emotional leap from calling something you do a hobby, to calling it a business. The scary process of mentally shifting your definition of yourself, as a woman. Developing more confidence, as a small business owner. Laurel's philosophy for developing more confidence in herself. The emotional things that tend to trip people up. How vulnerable should you allow yourself to be on social media? The difference between privacy and secrecy. Becoming selective about who you share your personal stories with. Some great insights from Laurel for those of you who are suffering from anxiety or depression. Don't forget to breathe! Follow Kiss Me Cookies on Facebook! APQC CEO,Dr. Carla O'Dell, interviewed Alex Pentland, head of the Human Dynamics Laboratory at the MIT Media Lab and keynote speaker on May 1, 2015 at APQC’s KM Conference.  He and his team have collected data, using RFID badges, on hundreds of thousands of interactions between people in companies and governments. They have found that the greater the flow of ideas within a group, the more productive it is.  That makes sense, right? Sharing good ideas and best practices rapidly, as well as harvesting the best ideas from a diverse group of people, should lead to improvement if the conditions are right.
