Harvey Brownstone Interviews...

Play Episode Play 60 sec Highlight Listen Later Feb 4, 2022 40:46

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Mel Tormé's Son, Steve March-Tormé, Singer / SongwriterAbout Harvey's guest:Steve was born in New York City to the multi-talented Mel Tormé and the former model/actress, Candy Tockstein. They were divorced when Steve was young, and Candy married Hal March, an actor/comedian best known as the host of NBC-TV's The $64,000 Question Show, but who also starred on Broadway in Neil Simon's Come Blow Your Horn. An avid baseball player and fan growing up in Westchester County, N.Y., Steve's dream was to play for the Yankees. He was a devoted fan who listened to games on the radio in the basement of his family home. Following every game, he'd switch to the Top 40 music stations and sing along with such artists as The Four Seasons, Nat King Cole, The Temptations, Ricky Nelson, and Gene Pitney. With his natural ear for harmonies, his favorite quickly became and remains The Beatles. By the age of 12, he knew that he wanted to be a performer, and at 13 he earned his first paycheck fronting his own band. After his family moved to Beverly Hills, he continued to develop as a musician and his influences grew to include Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Todd Rundgren, and Steely Dan.Steve recorded his first LP, Lucky, for United Artists Records, supporting it with a 20-city, national concert tour. Upon returning to California, he produced and sang on Liza Minnelli's Columbia Records release Tropical Nights, which became a favorite of New York dance clubs. He spent three years as the featured vocalist on ABC-TV's $100,000 Name That Tune and also hosted two Los Angeles-based television shows, Video 22 (a precursor to MTV) and Box Office America.Steve's first solo project after Full Swing was his CD Swingin' at the Blue Moon Bar & Grille, recorded with a crackerjack big band. It also features a duet between Steve and Mel (“Straighten Up and Fly Right”) and showcases an improvised scat lesson between father and son. That disc was followed up by The Night I Fell For You, featuring an alluring arrangement of the Lerner & Loewe classic “On the Street Where You Live,” and a number of Steve's original tunes, many penned with longtime collaborator, pianist and musical conductor Steve Rawlins. Those two releases were followed up by The Essence of Love, a collection of some of the most romantic, well-crafted standards ever written, including “Blue Skies,” “Stardust,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” and a playful duet with jazz icon Diane Schuur on “The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else.” His current jazz CD, So Far (on iTunes, cdbaby.com, and amazon.com), combines the most popular material from his first three CDs into one “best of” recording.Steve's latest CD, Inside/Out, goes back to his roots as a singer/songwriter, words and music written by Steve, on which he not only sings but plays keyboards and guitar. Because a natural interest exists in hearing Steve sing the songs his dad was known for, he did a 28-city cross-country tour for Columbia Artists Mgt. Inc. (CAMI) entitled Tormé Sings Tormé. Steve is proud to have had the opportunity to pay tribute to his father in a show featuring a ten-piece band playing the extraordinary arrangements penned by Marty Paich exclusively for Mel and including a multimedia presentation of photos and video clips. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://www.stevemarchtorme.com/https://facebook.com/stevemarchtormehttps://twitter.com/stevemarchtormehttps://instagram.com/stevemarchtorme#SteveMarchTorme  #MelTorme  #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Wouldn’t it be loverly if the Broadway Babies discussed the dynamic Pygmalion musical "My Fair Lady"? Just you wait, this episode is diving into some juicy drama surrounding the 2001 West End revival’s multiple Elizas, the importance of healthy singing as a live performer, the relationship between Eliza and Henry, and more! With a little bit of luck, maybe we will be able to unpack this beast of a show in an hour … Podcast cover art: David Taylor Twitter: @bwaybabies Facebook: Facebook.com/broadwaybabiespodcast iTunes | Spotify | Amazon CD Songs "Overture/Prologue" "I Could Have Danced All Night" (performed by Martine McCutcheon) "On the Street Where You Live" (performed by Mark Umbers) "With a Little Bit of Luck" (performed by Dennis Waterman) "Ascot Gavotte" (performed by My Fair Lady company) "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" (performed by Jonathan Pryce) (All lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner & music by Frederick Loewe; orchestrated by William David Brohn) Show Notes A news profile about Martine McCutcheon’s understudy, Alexandra Jay, who had her own 42nd Street moment when she had to go on as Eliza on the eve of opening night with about a day’s notice. It’s very press-controlled, fluff piece-y, lots of quotes from Cameron Mackintosh, and it weirdly talks about her salaries at jobs. A really interesting documentary on YouTube about the 2001 "My Fair Lady" West End production, with rehearsal scenes of "The Rain in Spain" and "With a Little Bit of Luck," as well as the production history of the musical and its then-infamous straight play source material Jonathan Pryce shares his opinions about the “Eliza flux” with some pretty straightforward American talk show hosts… Martine McCutcheon sings "Loverly" on a TV show, and she’s loverly, but it’s not quite up to par as a classical voice. For what I mean by that: A video of Audra taking a high-as-hell D flat in "Danced All Night" after pianist Seth Rudetsky surprises her with a key change, and she still nails it because she’s just FLAWLESS.

“Battle of the sexes.” That phrase dates back to at least 1914, when the notorious filmmaker D.W. Griffith (he of “Birth of a Nation”) released a blatantly sexist film with that title. “Battle of the Sexes.” Over the years, what that phrase means and how that particular battle is fought, has vastly evolved. Consider, for example, the enormous differences between Lerner and Lowe’s beloved 1956 musical “My Fair Lady,” and David Ives’ spicy 2011 comedy-drama “Venus in Fur.” We begin with that last one. Currently running at San Rafael’s Belrose Theater, directed by Carl Jordan and presented by Marin Onstage, ‘Venus in Fur’ is a two-person examination of sex, power and the pleasures of pain. There is a bit of light sadomasochism. There is leather and a dog collar. And it’s hilarious. When an off Broadway audition is crashed, late, by a scattered, goofy mess of an actress—excellently played by Melissa Claire, who plays the character as alternately ditzy, sexy and scary—she convinces the frustrated playwright-director—Tyler McKenna, quite good in a tough role—to let her audition. At first she seems totally unprepared. But she seems to know the play by heart, even though the script has not yet been distributed. And she seems to know quite a bit about the 1870 novel on which the new play is based, a novel written by the man for whom the term “masochism” was named. What follows is a series of escalating power trips and challenges and sexual intimidation, in which the rules, and the roles, change several times. Very adult, very funny, and full of surprises, this is a play designed, in part, to make you rethink how women are traditionally portrayed in theater and literature. Which brings us to ‘My Fair Lady,’ now playing at 6th Street Playhouse. Much tamer, compared to “Venus in Fur,” and clearly the product of an early era, the beloved musical ‘My Fair Lady’ was itself a taming-down of G.B. Shaw’s furious social critique ‘Pygmalion.’ It features some of the best songs ever written for the stage—‘Wouldn’t it be Loverly,’ ‘With a Little bit of Luck,’ ‘I Could Have Danced All Night,’ ‘The Street Where You Live,’ ‘I’m getting Married in the Morning.’ Impressively sung by a strong-voiced cast—who are somewhat poorly supported by a spotty orchestra. The production’s pleasures include a marvelous Norman Hall singing two of the show’s most famous songs, and some delightful costuming by Tracy Hinman. The play is directed with obvious affection by Craig Miller, who employs some impressive touches—crumpled poetry, a well-timed tear, but despite the cleverness of these inventions, it can’t quite make this dated, deeply tired show seem less like the out-of-touch dinosaur it is. As the self-impressed professor of linguistics Henry Higgins, David Yen is thoroughly entertaining, though not very likable, gleefully aiming a barrage of insults at Eliza Doolittle, an unhappy flower girl who asks him to teach her proper English enunciation. As Eliza, Denise Elia sings the part beautifully, effectively underplaying the character’s usual fire, thus emphasizing Eliza’s fear and uncertainty—making Higgins even less likable in the process. That, it must be said, has always been the primary failure of ‘My Fair Lady’—a Battle of the Sexes” love story in which the last thing we want is for main characters to fall in love. ‘Venus in Fur’ runs Fridays and Saturdays through May 21 at Belrose Theater, Visit marinonstage.org. ‘My Fair Lady’ runs Thursday–Sunday, through June 6 at 6th Street Playhouse. www.6thstreetplayhouse.com
