001You approach a door. Test perception. If you fail, go to paragraph 105. If you succeed, go to paragraph 166.105You fail to notice a sharp thing, so you step on it and take 1 wound. Go to paragraph 166.166On the other side of the door are things you must kill for reasons. Dig out tiles 2B, 4A, 6A, 8B and 12B and get ready for some paperwork.02:23 AYURIS: Tungaru (Louis Malz & Stefan Malz, Alley Cat Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:48 -Blood Rage (Eric Lang, CMON, 2015)06:29 -Wormholes (Peter McPherson, Alderac Entertainment Group, 2022)09:16 -Envelopes of Cash (Andy Schwarz, Envelopes of Cash LLC, 2022)13:52 -Fateforge: Chronicles of Kaan (Gordon Calleja, Mighty Boards, 2023)18:44 -Albedo: Yggdrasil (Kai Herbertz, Herbertz Entertainment UG, 2019)22:47 -Anachrony: Fractures of Time (Richard Amann, Viktor Peter, Dávid Turczi, & Mindclash Games, 2020)27:58 -Trudvang Legends (Jordy Adan, Fel Barros, Guilherme Goulart, Eric M. Spielevater Oli sprach mit Marita, Redakteuerin bei Abacusspiele über die Neuheiten von Abacus, Lieferprobleme und natürlich dem Herbst-Knaller "Wonderbook".
Shelley and I set out to explore parts of the world this week in Lost Explorers by Cédrick Chaboussit from Ludonaute and then focus on the African continent in Africana by Michael Schacht from ABACUSSPIELE and Z-Man Games
Shelley and I check out the 'card-game' version of Terraforming Mars (one of our favorite heavier titles of the past few years): Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition by Sydney Engelstein, Jacob Fryxelius, and Nick Little from Stronghold Games and FryxGames then go back to one our first heavier titles when we were just getting into boardgames La Città by Gerd Fenchel from Rio Grande Games, KOSMOS, and ABACUSSPIELE
Fun fact: The Red Cathedral isn't really a cathedral at all, it's a sobor, which isn't really the same thing. Also fun fact: Unsurprisingly, Mark is wrong to say that Fenrir will swallow the moon at the end of the world, as that is patently absurd. Fenrir swallows the sun, which makes perfect sense. Except, of course, for renditions where Fenrir's children Skoll and Hati swallow the moon and sun respectively. I guess we'll have to wait and see who got it right. "From the discovery of New France to the 1981 Referendum, all of Quebec history is based on a single fallacy: that the British actually wanted to own Quebec. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The British already had a surplus of colonies in the sunny Caribbean and took little interest in the Canadian icebox later dismissed by Voltaire as nothing more than 'quelques arpents de neige'... In 1759, with war raging everywhere between France and England, the British knew if would look suspicious if they didn't engage the French in North America. They placed the expedition in the hands of a thirty-two-year-old, inexperienced general, James Wolfe, and gave him strict orders: 'Put up a good fight... but lose.' Wolfe devised a clever theatrical strategy. He would choose an impossible attack-route: Arriving by boat on the St. Lawrence river then scaling the unassailable walls of the fortress of Quebec, thus guaranteeing defeat and dumping Quebec with France for good. But Wolfe's glorious defeat was snapped from the jaws of victory by Montcalm who brilliantly out-manoeuvred Wolfe and surrendered--a stroke of genius that got the colony off France's hands once and for all."-Nick Auf der Mar, "La Petite Histoire du Québec (Version Anglaise)"Games Played Last Week:01:09 -SEAL Team Flix (Pete Ruth & Mark Thomas, WizKids, 2018) 02:37 -Teotihuacan: City of Gods (Daniele Tascini & Dávid Turczi, NSKN Games, 2018)04:04 -Yokohama (Hisashi Hayashi, Tasty Minstrel Games, 2016)04:48 -Sprawlopolis (Steven Aramini, Danny Devine, & Paul Kluka, Button Shy, 2018)08:26 -Mezo (John Clowdus, Kolossal Games, 2019)13:25 -The Crew: The Quest for Planet 9 (Thomas Sing, KOSMOS, 2019)15:02 -Qwixx (Steffen Benndorf, Gamewright, 2012)16:41 -That's Pretty Clever (Wolfgang Warsch, Schmidt Spiele, 2018)17:30 -Coloretto (Michael Schacht, ABACUSSPIELE, 2003)19:32 -Orléans: Invasion (Inka Brand, Markus Brand, & Reiner Stockhausen, dlp Games, 2015)20:59 -Scythe (Jamey Stegmaier, Stonemaier Games, 2016)News (and why it doesn't matter):25:55 Expansion to Twilight Imperium 4th ed.26:44 Pandemic Legacy Season 027:20 Undaunted: Reinforcements28:39 DeepMind: An AI for Diplomacy?29:35 Lord of the Rings: Anniversary Edition31:01 Steven Universe Beach-a-Palooza on Kickstarter July 14th31:29 Pendulum by Stonemaier31:39 Lost Ruins of Arnak by CGE31:59 Documentary: Gamemaster32:42 Feature Game: Imperial Struggle (Ananda Gupta & Jason Matthews, GMT Games, 2020)

On must acknowledge that in many instances, pre-judgment is an adaptive advantage--I don't mean with respect to people, but in terms of being able to sift through the endless data with which we are constantly bombarded. Most of our concepts are pre-fabricated little categories that we can shove sense data into in order to make sense of the world (there's your Kantianism in three seconds for you). In boardgaming, were seventeen releases hit the market while I was typing this sentence, it can be handy to use heuristics or prejudice--I won't play games by designer or publisher X, for example. Then again, it is our thankless task to submerge ourselves wholesale into the hobby's output without fear or favour, and so we must try to overcome such self-imposed limits when we can.AYURIS: Battle for Rokugan 2m07s (Molly Glover & Tom Jolly, Fantasy Flight, 2017)Games Played Last Week:-Troyes 4m11s (Sébastien Dujardin, Xavier Georges, & Alain Orban, Pearl Games, 2010)-Hanabi 9m40s (Antoine Bauza, ABACUSSPIELE, 2010)-The Shipwreck Arcana 9m40s (Kevin Bishop, Meromorph Games, 2017)-Top Gun Strategy Game 11m08s (Prospero hall, Mixlore, 2020)-Pipeline 16m18s (Ryan Courtney, Capstone Games, 2019)-Northern Pacific 21m48s (Tom Tussell, Rio Grande, 2013)-Sakura Arms 23m55s (BakaFire, AEG, 2016)News (and why it doesn't matter):-Ghost Adventure 27m01-Cindr: Date a Dragon 28m05-Sonora: "Flick and Write" 29m28s-Waiting on Siege of the Citadel 30m18s-Coronavirus Uncertainty 31m36-Dragon Dice Refuse to Die 33m38sTopic: False Expectations 35m32s
On must acknowledge that in many instances, pre-judgment is an adaptive advantage--I don't mean with respect to people, but in terms of being able to sift through the endless data with which we are constantly bombarded.

We take endorsements very seriously here at SVWAG. The Ferragamo deal fell through after Walker was seen wearing Fendi, and the whole Burberry fiasco is better left forgotten. Converse was our backup, but suffice to say after Mark's public comments about sportsball that seems like a distant possibility at best. All that said, we endorse Gloomy Companion unreservedly. We don't resort to apps very often, but we don't Gloomhaven without Gloomy Companion employed on a tablet. Shelley and I plant rival gardens this week, hoping our neighbors don't disturb our crops too much, then build sections of Rome in two games that involve player building their own tableau. Mr. Cabbagehead's Garden by Todd Sanders from LudiCreations and Great City of Rome (or City of Rome depending on the publisher) by Matthew Dunstan and Brett J. Gilbert from Z-Man (if it's Great) and Abacusspiele (if it's just a City).
