Series: Mark — Preacher: Thomas Hudson
Scripture: 1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-21; 1 Timothy 3:1-7 Text: 1 Timothy 3:1 Theme: Calling men to the ministry of the Word of God.
This is the All Local 4:00 p.m. update for Saturday, June 13, 2026.
In this episode, Mark and Cindy begin an in-depth exploration of 1 Corinthians, discussing Paul's transformation from persecutor to apostle, the identity and calling of God's people and the rich grace believers have received through Jesus Christ. We examine the historical backdrop of Corinth, the meaning of sanctification and Christian fellowship, and the faithfulness of God in equipping, sustaining, and preparing His people for the return of Christ. Through verse-by-verse commentary and a few reflections from respected Bible scholars, this discussion highlights the believer's calling to holiness, gratitude, steadfast faith, and deeper communion with Jesus.
Let us link up the closing words of our reading in Hebrews (ch.9) “Christ … will appear a second time … to save those who are eagerly waiting for him” with the words God gave to Isaiah, in today's ch. 25, which we referred to yesterday. This describes the time when God “will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth …” It will be said on that day, ‘Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him … let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” [v.8,9]How eagerly are we waiting? Is the world around us full of ways of living that attract us, things that largely or fully occupy our minds? Yes, we have to live in the world and earn our living, but are we keenly interested in the vision God's word provides for us that goes far beyond the present materialistic way of thinking and doing? We are forced to admit that this computer communication age, which is very helpful in many ways, is also very distracting – do we need to allow it to be totally distracting? The more our minds feed on God's word the more we will be attracted to that word. In that coming day, the LORD tells us through Isaiah, the redeemed will say, “O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you … for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure … Therefore strong peoples will glorify you; cities of ruthless nations will fear you.” [v.1,3] At that time those who have been “eagerly waiting” and showing this by their priorities in life will “be glad and rejoice”. Peter in his 1st epistle, which we will soon read, expresses this powerfully, “Though you do not now see him, you believe him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith …” [1 Pet. 1 v.8,9] Imagine the joy? Imagine the glory? Finally, note the point Paul made earlier in Hebrews ch. 9! “How much more will the blood of Christ who … offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” [v.14] If we do not sense our progress in that purifying and, as a result, serving, then we have to ask ourselves, ‘Do I genuinely belong to Christ?'

Various May 3, 2026 PM.Pastor Postiff shares a few passages from Scripture that encourage us to be eagerly awaiting the return of Jesus. In sharing the Table of the Lord, we do so until the Lord comes.
In today's sermon, Apostle Alfred Williams teaches that stepping into a new month is a spiritual moment: earth should “inquire of heaven” and believers should ask, “Holy Spirit, what are You saying about this month?” Drawing from Psalm 19:1–4 and Romans 8:14, he calls the church to live as Spirit-led people, interpreting what happens in life through God's perspective rather than noise, confusion, or fear. He emphasises that spiritual growth and the word-of-knowledge lifestyle begin with a posture of hunger—turning your heart to understand, as Daniel did (Daniel 9), and building your life on Scripture, not guesswork or emotions. Apostle then anchors the key instruction for May: “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts” (1 Corinthians 14:1). He explains that what God has prepared for those who love Him is revealed by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9–10), because the Spirit searches the deep things of God and knows His thoughts (1 Corinthians 2:10–11). Therefore, believers can understand what God has freely given them—wisdom, direction, peace, provision, and insight—through the Spirit who lives within them (1 Corinthians 2:12). He closes by linking May's theme to transformation “from glory to glory” by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18) and reminding the church that angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14)—so fear has no place in the believer's life.
Biblical waiting describes an intense, active, forward-leaningexpectation anchored in faith.

Don't let today slip by unprepared—discover how living with eternal perspective changes everything!
Latte and Laundry: A home for Catholic women, moms, and hearts
"When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, 'I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.'" Luke 22: 14-16How wild is it that Jesus eagerly desired to be with the apostles just before he was about to suffer, unlike any human has ever suffered. Do we also eagerly desire communion, or do we get distracted by the duties, fears, and daily stresses of our lives? This is an invitation this week to rest in God's desire to be with us so that we too can live out a life desiring communion with both the loves in our life, as well as, and most importantly, with God himself!Have an episode idea you want to hear about? Read Online“You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” John 8:23–24Tensions were growing as Jesus gradually unveiled the deeper reality of Who He is, while the Pharisees remained blind to the truth, obstinate in their opposition. When Jesus said, “you will die in your sins,” He was not speaking of a sin committed out of weakness or confusion. He was speaking about the Pharisees' fundamental and grave sin of refusing to accept Him as “I AM,” the Messiah and Son of God.Chapter 8 in John's Gospel reveals this growing tension. In today's Gospel, Jesus becomes exceptionally clear about His messianic identity, taking upon Himself the awesome name of Yahweh: I AM. Chapter 8 concludes with Jesus stating, “You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires” (John 8:44). This so angered the Jews that they tried to stone Him. Why did Jesus agitate the Pharisees and others who refused to believe in Him? It certainly wasn't to be argumentative. The agitation came from the truth He proclaimed about Himself and the Pharisees' need to believe in Him. He was unveiling His identity and inviting people to believe in Him so they could receive the gift of eternal life. The truth, however, that He was the Messiah, the Son of God, and the great I AM, was more than the self-righteous Pharisees could handle. Jesus' divine identity did not fit into their expectations of Who the Messiah would be. Furthermore, when Jesus revealed the truth of Who He was with such clarity, the Pharisees realized that much of what they believed about the Messiah was wrong; that was hard for them to accept because they didn't want to change. We have much to learn from the Pharisees. There are many things God asks of us that are difficult to accept. First, within the larger context of secular society, God's pure and holy truth is often met with resistance, ignored, or even dismissed outright. When disciples of Christ live their faith openly and proclaim the full message of the Gospel in the public square, they are frequently attacked as judgmental, outdated, or disconnected from modernity. Opposition to the Gospel manifests itself in numerous ways—especially in academic institutions that push relativism, secular news outlets that downplay or marginalize Christian values, political parties that advance agendas contrary to the moral law, bureaucratic workplaces driven by profit and power rather than ethics, and even within our own families, where faith can become a point of contention and division. The broader societal context is not the only place God's truth is met with resistance. In each of our souls, God's holy truth demands total surrender to His will and obedience to His commands. God—the all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving Creator of all things—alone knows what is best for us. Holiness requires ongoing conversion, change, and humble repentance. Rejection of God's truth leaves us angry and defensive, just like the Pharisees. Openness to God's truth demands change. As the old saying goes, “Change is the only thing that remains the same.” Change is difficult, especially when God's pure light and truth reveal that we have walked down the wrong path, believed lies, failed to love, and misunderstood the Gospel and the demands that the great I AM expects of us.Reflect today on the Pharisees and their fierce opposition to Jesus. As you do, humbly consider any ways that you are obstinate and unwilling to change. The only people in this world who do not need to change are those who have already arrived at the perfection of Divine Union, freed of every earthly sin and attachment to sin. The rest of us still have a long road of conversion, purification, and humbling repentance. Do not take the path of the Pharisees. Eagerly run to the difficult and demanding truth God speaks to you so that you will come to know God's power and true identity in your life, accepting Him as your Lord and Messiah. My demanding Lord, You call me to perfection because You love me. Because of my sin, I often resist the many ways that You speak to me, trying to draw me into the full truth. Please open my heart and remove all obstinacy so that I will willingly change so as to ascend the glorious staircase toward Divine Union. Jesus, I trust in You. Paul's letter to the Romans contains some of the most meaningful and thought provoking words in Scripture. It is extremely challenging to read it and embrace all its' points in our minds. Maybe, more than any other book in the Bible, this book calls for our diligent and meditative study. But this is the challenge of the whole Bible, it is not at all like a school text book that you go through in a year's study and then leave on the shelf for occasional reference. God's word is designed by him for our lifelong reading and reflection. Paul had been brought up under the Law of Moses with all its rules and regulations. He had been zealous for the Law, but, as a result of his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, he had, with God's help through the Spirit, applied his mind to the new reality of eternal things – especially – to a personal relationship to his Saviour. The Law of Moses was a Law for Israel as a nation. This Law had been superseded by a situation in which each individual needed to develop a personal relationship with their Saviour the Lord Jesus and with his Father – and through him – is now ‘Our Father.' Paul writes, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing …” [8 v.18,19] This sense of eagerness is felt by all those who see the emptiness in so much of what people enjoy today: But it is all “creation” that waits for the removal of the curse imposed in Eden. We learn in Genesis how God said to Adam “cursed is the ground because of you” [Gen. 3 v.17] Paul goes on to say we “groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons (& daughters), the redemption of our bodies” [v.23] How true is the word eagerly – especially as we grow older and our minds and bodies feel the effects. Those who find this life satisfying and enjoyable will not genuinely “wait eagerly” for that which is going to replace it. But for many in the world this life offers little that is enjoyable – so they are often in a far more spiritually acceptable frame of mind before God. Finally, let us all read carefully and prayerfully the last 8 verses (31-39) of Romans ch 8.
Send us a textPhilippians 3:20-21For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.Support the show

John 5:39 NLT The surrendered heart, fine tuned by God's word, will always see what the head alone is likely to miss.Eagerly waitingPreconceived notions often keep us from noticing God's miraculous favor as it play out in our lives.Anna, a prophetess, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. Her husband died when they had been married only seven years. Then she lived as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem. Luke 2:36-38 NLT You are less likely to miss a miracle if you hang out with people who also have a persistent faith. Then Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up. “There's a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?” John 6:8-9 NLT Andrew recognized a miracle was possible because he had His eyes firmly fixed on the Messiah. The God gift to see the miracle before it has fully manifested is a powerful gift. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!” Luke 2:32 NLTThe greatest miracle from the story of Simeon and Anna is that they didn't miss on the presence of Jesus,-------------------------------------------------Download the 828 Church app!To view our latest e-newsletter, the Midweek Momentum, and subscribe to our weekly updates, go here! https://linktr.ee/828church

Episode 244 and Victorian popular fiction author H Rider Haggard features as one of the main characters of this tale. Rider Haggards' creation called Allan Quartermain appeared in 18 novels - the first in what has become known as is the Lost World genre. George Lucas and Philip Kaufman copied the Allan Quartermain template for Indiana Jones character - as well as the basic storylines for movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark. While King Solomon's Mines is Rider Haggard's most popular work, Allan Quartermain has since reappeared in movies in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which gave his books a bit of a push. His novels, which blended exploration, myth, and early ideas of evolution, also influenced the subconscious of his generation, resonating with spiritual and psychological themes that were explored by figures like Jung and Freud. Furthermore, his work reflects and grapples with late Victorian anxieties, including imperial politics, the changing role of religion, and burgeoning notions of race and empire. Right now, we're saddling up with Theophilus Shepstone in Pietermaritzburg - it's 1877. If you recall last episode, Transvaal President Burgers had gone to war against baPedi chief Sekhukhuni, which ended in a stalemate and reports of atrocities committed by German lead mercenaries. Burgers had already complained in England about their treatment of the Boer claims to the diamond fields - and the Colonial office had coughed up 90 000 pounds as compensation. You could call it a bribe, because that's what it was. The boers accepted the compensation, but did not back down on their claims to land in the vicinity of the Transvaal, including baPedi land. As long as the Transvaal remained receptive to the confederation idea at least in Carnarvon's mind, there was no real conflict to deal with amongst the local officials. But there was growing tension between an historian JJ Froude and Garnet Wolseley for example. Froude had been sent on a fact-finding mission to the colonies by Carnarvon and he became a surprising advocate for the Boers and the Free State and Transvaal Republics. His advice to Carnarvon was to let the states handle their own problems, as they resented interference from Downing Street. Cape Governor Sir Henry Barkly had been sending Carnarvon reports drawn largely from pro-annexationist newspapers in the Transvaal and the Cape Colony. These implied that the Transvaal was nearing a state of anarchy as a result of its war with the Sekukuni's baPedi. Eagerly lapping all this up was Sir Garnet Wolseley who was the very epitome of the Stiff upper lip Brit, a military officer and administrator, represented the opposite, more interventionist imperial view. In late December 1876, Sir Theophilus Shepstone departed from Pietermaritzburg in Natal with a small, almost symbolic, escort of just 25 Natal Mounted Police and a handful of officials including the young H Rider Haggard. Just as an aside, Haggard was not being paid for his duties as Shepstone's secretary. Work experience I guess you'd call it. However, Shepstone's secret instructions were far more decisive: if he deemed it necessary and opportune, he was to annex the territory to the British Crown. The Transvaal had no easy revenue base, and Shepstone introduced new taxes on both black and white Transvalers, while his administrative reforms chafed the Boers. Most resented they now had no elected representation under British rule and resistance started almost immediately.
