Thessalonica was a major city in Macedonia. It had a huge harbor and was situated on a major trade route. It had been established by a Macedonian king named Cassander in 315 B.C., who named it after his wife Thessalonike. Paul was supported financially in his mission here by the saints in Philippi, the city he had just come from (Phil. 4:16).

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body (Philippians 3:20-21). As we conclude this chapter, we build on Kyra's reflections from yesterday. Paul writes with tears. Was some of the ink blotched because those tears had fallen while he wrote? His heart is grieved for all those who insist on opposing the cross of Christ. Recall also that he does not name them ‘my enemies'. We do well to diligently follow his example. People are not the enemy. No matter how deep our disagreements, our struggle is against powers and principalities, not people. Regarding these ‘enemies of the cross', he says, ‘their god is their stomach'. Stomach stands in for all the desires of the body, the lusts of the flesh. Their chief concern is personal satisfaction. Their appetites dictate their lives; their minds focussed solely on this earth and this life; their vision to please the self in the moment. His warning is not against specific sins, but against the underlying sin of pandering to self. On that score, are any of us innocent? Which of us Christ followers do not, at least on occasion, fall to a temptation of the ‘stomach', pandering to self? Paul is reminding his readers that they themselves must remain vigilant. We do well to heed his warning; his tears fall for us as well. We must test our desires. In themselves, they are not necessarily bad. Desires for food, for friendship, for a healthy marriage or for rest are normally good. However, we can overindulge in food. Sometimes we can use friends to climb the ladder. Sometimes our desire for rest is just laziness. Thus, Paul reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven. Our treasures, our desires, our goals for life are determined not by the desires of our bodies, but by the values of God himself. Philippi was a Roman colony, ruled by Roman law not by its own customs; its citizens were Roman citizens. Likewise, Christians live in this world, among human cultures and value systems, but our citizenship is in heaven. We derive our values from the cross. When the truths of the cross and the return of Christ are grasped, a certain way of life naturally follows. What we believe changes our behaviour. We imitate Christ while longing for full redemption. When he returns, our Saviour will transform us so that our lowly bodies, often difficult to control, will then be subject to Christ giving glory to God. Ours are lowly bodies because they are subject to sin. The body itself, as God's creation, is good. But because of sin, we are frail and weak, easily seduced to engage in selfish activity. While our bodies remain ‘lowly', we have not arrived at our goal. But one day, our lowly bodies will give way to the new spiritual body. Eagerly we await Christ's appearance and full conformity to his resurrection body, forever in union with our God. We live in this world pressing on towards that day. At that final day he will, from his exalted position where all things are subject to him, draw our lowly bodies up into his glorious existence. He identified with our humility so that we might in turn be identified with his resurrected body. Maranatha, come Lord Jesus. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing; at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

But just nine days after Poppy's birth, Lil awoke in the middle of the night and immediately knew that 'something wasn't right'. Still half asleep, she turned on the bathroom nights and was greeted with a confronting sight. Tonight is Lag BaOmer. There is a minhag to hold a festive meal in honor of the holy Tanna, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. The Maharil writes in a teshuvah that a seudah made in honor of a talmid chacham has the status of a seudat mitzvah, because it is like eating in the radiance of the Shechinah. Therefore, a meal in honor of Rabbi Shimon carries has status of a seudat mitzvah(for certain halachot). It is also a minhag to light bonfires on Lag BaOmer, and the Bnei Yissaschar explains the reason based on the teachings of the Zohar. On the day Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai passed away—Lag BaOmer—he would not allow the sun to set before he finished revealing the deep secrets of the Torah to his students. Hashem had already decreed that Rashbi would pass away on that very day, but the Torah he wished to transmit was too vast to finish in time. Miraculously, he was able to stop the sun until he had completed his teachings. The special light that radiated from the Torah he was teaching outshone even the light of the sun. It was in the merit of this spiritual light—drawn from the hidden light, the Or HaGanuz—that the day was miraculously lengthened. This is the deeper reason why we light bonfires on this holy day. The Siddur of the Yaavetz notes that Lag BaOmer is considered a holiday instituted by the Chachamim. In the Sefirat HaOmer, Lag BaOmer corresponds to Hod shebeHod, which represents the strictest form of judgment. Yet, it is known that if a Sanhedrin unanimously rules someone guilty, he is actually exonerated. So too, on this day, harsh judgments are sweetened, and Hashem showers His chesed upon us. The Chatam Sofer writes in his derashot on the Omer that Lag BaOmer has the power of Yom Kippur within it. Throughout the generations, many people have experienced yeshuot on this day in the merit of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Sincere tefillah is always powerful—but on a holy day like this, it is even more so. A man named Yosef shared a story. One night, after finishing his learning in the beit midrash as usual, a man approached him and urged him to come to his car. The man explained that every Monday night, a local bakery gives him all of the day's leftovers, which he distributes to others. He had noticed Yosef's dedication to learning and wanted to offer some baked goods to him. Though the offer seemed unusual, Yosef went along with it. The bakery indeed had many delicious leftovers, and Yosef happily brought them home to his family. He hoped to surprise his children, but to his surprise, they asked him, "Did you bring home any baguettes?" Yosef, amazed, asked how they knew. They told him they had prayed to Hashem for it. Eagerly interrupting one another, the children shared the full story. Yosef's daughter, who was learning photography, had a project in which she wanted to photograph a baby holding a baguette. Normally, Yosef would never buy a baguette just for a photo. So instead, his daughter gathered all her siblings and asked them to pray to Hashem to send them a baguette—without having to buy it. It was a genuine tefillah, full of emunah that Hashem listens to every prayer. A few hours later, their father walked through the door with exactly what they had asked for—and even more. This story is a reminder that tefillah is powerful, even the simplest prayers for the simplest things. Let us tap into the koach of tefillah on this great day of Lag BaOmer. With the help of Hashem, may we all see blessings and yeshuot.

In this sermon, Pastor Byron Cogdell unpacks the heart of 1 Corinthians 14, focusing on one powerful command: “Eagerly desire the gift of prophecy.”Too often, spiritual gifts are either misunderstood or neglected, but Paul makes it clear that prophecy is a gift that builds up the church, strengthens believers, and reveals the nearness of God. In this teaching, you'll be invited to pursue the prophetic—not as a performance, but as a Spirit-empowered way to encourage and edify others. This message will stir your faith and help you reimagine what a Spirit-filled, other-focused church can truly be.

Tonight, we delve into the shadowy depths of nature's secrets in a spine-tingling episode of Weekly Spooky, as we unwrap a monstrous compilation of eerie tales designed to keep you on the edge of your seat. It's the first Friday in April, and as the chilling whispers of the wind beckon, we prepare to embark on a haunting journey through the unexplored and often sinister realms of the outdoors. So, grab your favorite blanket, dim those lights, and let's venture into the terrifying unknown where nightmares come alive under the canopy of stars. Our chilling adventure kicks off in the frostbitten landscapes of the Great White North, introducing us to Joshua Fox, a college student grappling with loneliness as he returns to his hometown of Owen Sound. Through his relatable and youthful voice, we traverse the familiar corridors of college life—filled with nostalgia, Dungeons & Dragons, and the warm camaraderie of shared memories. However, as Joshua seeks to spark new connections after a week of isolation, he discovers an old flame, Tracy Kidd, reigniting a flicker of hope. Yet, in a delicious twist of horror, Joshua finds that his eagerly anticipated reunion spirals into a night of unimaginable terror. As darkness descends, Tracy transforms from a beacon of connection into a nightmarish figure, culminating in a gut-wrenching chase where survival instincts kick in, reminding us that the forest may hide more than just creatures of the night. As we shift gears, the narrative expands to encompass the gripping tale of a beleaguered park ranger on night watch in a seemingly innocuous warehouse, where the silence becomes suffocating and the shadows teasingly morph into lurking horrors. Our ranger's mundanity unravels as strange occurrences envelop him, signaling that something sinister stirs behind the facade of safety. The terror escalates as he encounters grotesque creatures, not just threats to his physical safety but manifestations of his deepest insecurities, painting nature and isolation as both a refuge and a tormentor—a theme that threads itself throughout the episode, capturing the uneasy balance between tranquility and terror.Fate intertwines as we plunge deeper into the narrative, surfing the crest of adrenaline-fueled frights. In the backyard of a dense, dark forest, chaos brews as the story takes a visceral turn. Here, we accompany Lila and Rocco—two individuals entrenched in a complicated relationship—on what is intended to be a romantic retreat, but soon morphs into a chilling fight for survival. Their camping trip spirals into chaos as they face the relentless menace of mutated fleas, pushing their bonds to the limit. Amid terror and bloodshed, friendships are tested in a visceral showing of human emotions—fear and desperation loom large as bonds of loyalty struggle against primal instincts to survive.Eagerly exploring these tales, we draw parallels between the chaotic horrors of a dysfunctional camping trip and the unseen perils lurking within dark hallways of the warehouse, showcasing how fear can manifest in myriad forms. The creatures may change, but the essence of horror remains etched in the hearts of our protagonists, forcing them to confront the darkness—both external and internal—that resides within. It's in these haunting moments, where survival is paramount, that we witness not just physical confrontations but an exploration of human fragility in the face of the unspeakable: a palpable reminder that sometimes, the monsters we face are reflections of our own fears and insecurities. As the chilling climax approaches, we unveil not just the creatures that lurk in the shadows but the very fabric of human emotion that binds us in fear and hope. Each story resonates with eerie truths, leading us through the beautifully terrifying dualities inherent in our existence—where nature's beauty often cloaks an unseen menace. I invite you, dear listeners, to join me on this captivating exploration of fear and survival as we dissect the unseen horrors that dwell both within the haunted whispers of nature and beneath the surface of our own hearts. If the night we just shared has captured your imagination, I encourage you to keep the spine-tingling tales alive by visiting weeklyspooky.com, where you can support us and discover more thrilling merchandise. Until next time, may your nights be serene, but remain ever vigilant of what lurks just beyond the safety of light.

Today on A NEW BEGINNING, Pastor Greg Laurie helps us celebrate His first coming, and eagerly anticipate His return. It’s the best way to celebrate Christmas. Invest in evangelism in 2025! Who got a front row seat and a backstage pass to the greatest moment in history? A few dirty shepherds smothered in sheep-stink. Sounds like a Wabi Sabi thing to me. Bible Reading: Psalms 27:5-10, 14; 91:14-16Because there was so much arguing going on inside the house, no one heard Jude slip out the back door. He ran across the yard and shimmied up his favorite tree. Somehow, sitting in the big old tree made Jude feel better--safe from things like noise and heartache. The tree was his hiding place and escape.Jude stayed in the tree for a long time. He listened to birds chirp and sing. He watched small, quick squirrels run around the yard. The day looked better from high up in his favorite hiding place. There were no problems here. Still, his heart was very heavy."Jude!" called Mom from the back door. "Where are you?" Jude saw that his grandma was there too, so he climbed down and walked slowly toward the house. "Grandma wants to know if you'd like to go home with her for a while," said Mom. "Do you want to?" Eagerly, Jude nodded."That tree you were in must be very special to you," Grandma said as they got into the car. "Your mom says you spend a lot of time there.""I like it up there," said Jude. "It's away from everything." He sighed. "But it's almost winter. Then I won't be able to hide in my tree anymore.""Sounds like you'll need a new hiding place," said Grandma. "And you know what? There's an even better place where you can take shelter from the things that trouble you."Jude was surprised. "There is? Where?""Any place you want it to be," Grandma replied. "It's the Lord's presence. Because you trust in Jesus, His Spirit lives in you, and He's always with you. He wants to help you and remind you how much He loves you. You can talk to Him anywhere, anytime."Jude kicked his feet together, looking down at the mat in the car rather than his Grandma's gentle gaze. "What if I don't want to talk about it, even with God?Grandma was silent for a moment. "Then remember that Jesus knows exactly what you're going through and promises to give you strength," she finally said. "If you don't want to talk, remember that He loves you so much He died for you, and know that you're safe in His care. He will listen whenever you're ready and will carry you through."– Nance E. KeyesHow About You?Where do you go when you feel hurt, sad, or afraid? When you feel like you need to get away and hide, remember that God is with you. He wants to be your shelter and your hiding place. He provides comfort and peace through His Word, His Spirit, and the community around you. Wherever you are, He is with you, and He cares for you deeply and promises to help you. Today's Key Verse:The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. Hey, you. Stop doom scrolling. You've landed where you belong. Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors return to Comic Book Couples Counseling with another Justice Warriors book, Vote Harder. And they're back just when we need them most, weeks away from a critical, very American election. As in the best romantic comedies, Swamp Cop and Officer Schitt are torn apart early on in Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. Bubble City embarks on its first-ever election, and it's doing something strange to its populace. They're trapped with a ballot George Orwell wouldn't wish on his most hated dystopia, and the city's most horrendous Bad Boys are the only ones who can save the day. Best of luck, citizens. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is another vicious satire skewering contemporary society while highlighting the damned, nothing-new, never-ending cycle of corruption. Do you think your hell is the most hell that's ever hell'ed? Nah. It's the same old hell. It's only new to you. Eagerly, we lean into Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors, trying to discern any wisdom they've gained by plunging themselves into the world of Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. We continue to explore satire's purpose, why two dumb protagonists are the heroes we deserve, and how The Matrix Reloaded deserves a second viewing, if not a third, fourth, and fifth. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is now available in trade paperback from Ahoy Comics. Follow Matt Bors on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website.
