This week Bryan and Dave take a look at a nasty little indie from New Jersey that can't help but get a little on ya. Alfred Sole's Alice, Sweet Alice is a vicious movie with a real bone to pick with the Catholic church. Following his actual excommunication from the church having, Alfred Sole pulled together every resource he could, with a script co-written by Rosemary Ritvo and heavily, heavily inspired by Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now, it pits a community of deeply repressed middle-class Catholics against a killer who brutally murders a child in a church. Is it the deeply disturbed problem-child Alice? All signs point to yes but it's complicated, of course. Perverse and dark in the extreme, Alice, Sweet Alice stands alone in the 1970's as a truly original, truly mean piece of horror with a hell of a cast and some seriously nasty special effects. Nova Jersey, 1961. This week on the show, Alice, Sweet Alice - a classic horror from the 1970s. A young girl, Karen (played by Brooke Shields) meets an untimely end in this religious-themed regional slasher by director Alfred Sole. Karen is murdered by an unknown assailant in a yellow raincoat and creepy translucent mask. And speaking of yellow, this one bears some of the hallmarks of giallo films from that era, despite these not being an influence on Sole.
“Parents, so often, don't know their children as well as they presume.” Hide your knife in a paper bag and pull on your yellow rain slicker for a conversation on masked attackers, sassy sisters, and communion-craving kids. An adolescent girl is suspected of murdering her sister, and attacking (and murdering) others in this mid-1970s proto-slasher film. Gus joins Matt & Ashley to talk about Alice, Sweet Alice in today's 13 Days of Halloween episode.
A disfrutar!

Quentin, Roger and Eli Roth continue their exploration of American Giallo with one of Eli's favorite films, 1976's Alice, Sweet Alice. When Alice's sister Karen is found brutally murdered in a church, suspicions turn towards Alice - but could a 12-year-old girl really be the killer? The group talks about the role that religion plays in giallo, how director Alfred Sole pulled off a period piece on a budget, and how the identity of the villain is just too good to spoil. Wrapping things up in a bow, let's all sing Happy Birthday To Me. Virginia is about to celebrate her 18th birthday, but before she can throw her party, her friends are killed off one by one. Directed by J. Lee Thompson, this film features amazing gags, unique kills, and one of the most gut-wrenching brain surgery scenes you'll ever see. Make sure you RSVP; it'll be a killer party. Mike S. and Mike H. go back to the wild 70's to cover the seminal horror ALICE, SWEET ALICE by the late Alfred Sole. Shot entirely in New Jersey, this movie is significant in a few ways. It's the film debut of Brooke Shields, it's writer-director Alfred Sole's first non-porn film and is widely considered to be arguably the first American giallo. Once again we go INCREDIBLY NICHE. In this episode a former ~*adult film director*~ gets excommunicated from the Catholic church and he has something to say about it! The director? Alfred Sole. The Movie? Alice, Sweet Alice (A.K.A Communion, A.K.A Holy Terror) from 1976. Anthony and Alix also talk a LOT about our own family dynamics (older sibling syndrome is also real) and our relationship with religion (it's as heavy as you're probably picturing). It's heavy, but good. We are TERRIFIED of the killer costume in this movie and only 5 star reviews on iTunes will keep the nightmares at bay. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, so why does the past seem like such a nightmare? In the world of pre-Vatican Patterson, NJ the Catholic communities are trapped, shamed, guilty, frustrated, and unhappy. And that's before a maniac in a mask starts burying butcher knives into the tops of people's feet. Alice, Sweet Alice is one of the greatest slashers of all-time and unforgivably forgotten by too many people, but on this episode of Tracks of the Damned, the horror film commentary track podcast, two lapsed Catholics from New Jersey (host Patrick Ripoll and Bill Ackerman of the Supporting Characters podcast) try to tackle what makes this film so deep, satisfying and scary. In addition to the commentary Bill Ackerman brings with him an exclusive interview he did with Alice, Sweet Alice director Alfred Sole, getting into his career, the joys and pains of low-budget film-making, and what the hold up is on Alice, Sweet Alice coming out on blu-ray. Nous parlons aujourd'hui de la maigre mais étonnante filmographie du réalisateur Alfred Sole. "Your First Communion holds your last breath" On this 38th Horror 101 episode the crew highlight a 70's snoozer giallo style slasher film called Alice, Sweet Alice. Directed by Alfred Sole, this was Brooke Shields' first film. The movie has all but disappeared into obscurity but we're digging it out of its grave to highlight for our listeners this suspenseful tale of murder and mystery. When little Karen is killed at her First Communion all evidence points to her disturbed teenage sister as the killer. As the bodies begin to climb during the investigation the big question is asked of the viewer. Can a child really be a serial killer? STR welcomes back, Castle Set Production Designer, Alfred Sole. This time he has brought along with him his coworker, Castle Set Dresser, Claire Kaufman. They both will be taking your calls at (347) 857-4368. Please join us as we interview these two very talented artists on Tuesday, August 2nd at 9e/8c/7m/6p. Alfred and his team build the sets for Castle both on set and on location while Claire's job is to dress all of those sets. Together, they provide the backdrop for every scene we see and enhance the realism for us the audience. They are both creative artists who play a major role in making Castle scenes so believable. We hope you can join us for this fun and interesting show. If not, that's okay ~ you can always download via iTUNES or RSS feed for FREE to your pc, mac, or iAnything to listen at your convenience.
