If you've been following the show for a while, you may have noticed that we talk a lot about acne, and this is no accident. Adult acne is becoming increasingly more common, and with that, prescriptions for medications designed to treat acne are also on the rise. It's no surprise that more and more people are turning to medications, like antibiotics, Accutane, and Spironolactone as a solution to clear their skin. In fact, according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, over 2 million people have taken Accutane to date. While these treatments have become commonplace in acne management, they aren't the magic overnight solution they're often made out to be... and in my opinion, should be considered carefully if your doctor has recommended them for you. So in today's episode, we will uncover the truth behind these acne medications, including how they work, why they are a temporary bandaid, and some important side effects you will definitely want to consider. We're joined in episode 55 by a good friend of the Wellness Paradox, Kinesiologist Jeff Young. You may remember Jeff from episode 22 where we discussed Making Medical Fitness a Healthcare System Wide Reality. In this episode, we'll dive a little deeper into a topic we teased on that podcast, the role of strength training in medical fitness, functional capacity, and ultimately health. As Jeff will attest, from his lengthy career as a “frontline” medical fitness practitioner, there is a lot of myth and misconception around the role of strength training with the chronically diseased, medically compromised, and otherwise unhealthy population. Much of these misconceptions exist around both safety and efficacy of programming. As we'll note in the episode, not only have PROPERLY prescribed progressive strength training been vetted for safety within the clinical literature, the are also highly efficacious at addressing many chronic disease and disabilities. More so, in some cases, than even aerobic exercise, which has been viewed as the “panacea” of health-promoting exercise for decades. The best part of this discussion is how practical it gets, specifically with regard to program design and progression. As Jeff points out, the progressive element of a strength training prescription is what makes it both safe and effective, and most practitioners (and medical professionals) fail to realize the importance of progression. Jeff will not skimp on the explanation around the progressive component of strength training prescription in this discussion. Get ready for a masterclass in safe and effective strength training prescription across the lifespan and continuum of disease in this discussion. I'd most definitely have a notebook handy. In episode 22 of the Wellness Paradox Podcast we're joined by Kinesiologist Jeff Young. The best way to describe Jeff is he's a medical fitness practitioner. That is, he works with populations who are chronically diseased to improve their fitness, vitality, functional capacity, and most importantly enhance their quality of life. Jeff has a particularly unique perspective on what it takes for fitness and wellness professionals to become part of the healthcare delivery system. In fact, this is a path he has walked his entire career being part of multidisciplinary care teams at Duke University Medical Center, UCLA, and Mount Sinai Medical Center. Jeff has truly lived his career as a fitness professional within the healthcare system, as such he has a number of important lessons to teach us in terms of how we can make this vision more of a global reality for our industry. What is unique about Jeff is he's what I like to call a “frontline” practitioner. He's in the trenches everyday working with clients, applying evidence-based principles of exercise program design through the lens of, and in collaboration with, medicine. Particularly Jeff focuses on the role that a structured, periodized, strength training program can play in improving health, mitigating disease, and supporting medical treatment. Jeff is also an author and educator who has dedicated a significant amount of his professional time and energy to educating other professionals, just as he does on this podcast. To say Jeff has a wealth of knowledge in the medical fitness domain is vast understatement. In this valuable conversation the pearls of knowledge dropped by this industry veteran are a paradigm shifter for those who think integrating fitness and wellness professionals into the healthcare continuum is not feasible. As Jeff points out, it is not only feasible, it's happening, and it's essential that it happens on a much larger scale. Our Guest: Jeff Young, Kinesiologist, CSCS, ACSM-EIMJeff works primarily in medical fitness, and has worked at world-class facilities such as Duke University, UCLA, and Beth Israel Medical Centers, and as the founding fitness coordinator and faculty practice provider at Mount Sinai Medical Center's Center for Health and Healing in New York City – the most comprehensive urban-based academic integrative medicine and medical fitness facility in the U.S. at the time.Currently, Jeff operates his own company in New York City, which implements and oversees medical fitness and post-rehabilitation patient services at a clinical facility in Manhattan. When I turn my back on someone who needed my care and in trauma or something And tie all of that into American healthcare so that hopefully use them as parables if you will. Hopefully, we can start to understand the quagmire we're in especially now with this Coronavirus. I mean the best thing that you can do to protect yourself from the Coronavirus, maybe wash your hands and not be in the same room as someone. Next. Yeah. But after that, the best thing you can do is to be healthy, to have the right body mass index to not be overweight to eat. Well. Do you know last year they came out with a study that if you consumed more than four ultra-processed foods a day now that's your chips, your hot dogs, your sports drinks, your chocolates, your candies, frozen pizzas, those sorts of things? You had a 62% increased chance or increased hazard for all causes of death 62% and for every one ultra-processed food you added on top of that there was an extra 18 percent. 14:30 - Between 50 and 85% of all healthcare costs in this country are spent on treating enormously preventable diseases. 50 to 85% of people say there's no money for universal health care in this country and they're 100% right with how things are with the fattest country in the world. We waste money on things that you and I were not a doctor and I didn't have the knowledge I had, if I went back in time, these are things I can handle. Most hate to admit that it's based on nutrition, just how I'm fueling my body, day in and day out could affect so much. 19:20 - Physicians actually get paid less money if we do not prescribe a drug. We are incentivized to do so, so big pharma has bought the laws that say, hey, I can talk to you about peas and carrots, or maybe more carrots because they're more keto-friendly than I think a
