Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer emeritus of the Cleveland Clinic and author of nine best-selling books, has developed a concept, RealAge, that motivates people to take control of their lives in a way that will help them live longer and healthier. “The most important thing for people to understand is they're a genetic engineer,” he maintains. The choices people make in how they live can determine how long they live. His RealAge program, which suggests that people at the age of 90 will soon be able to live like 40-year-olds, advocates taking steps to remain physically active, reduce stress and continue social engagement. All can prolong life span and assure greater health. “When you do stress management or when you do physical activity, you change which of the genes are in or not in your cells,” Dr. Roizen says. Stressing a muscle, he explains, can send a protein to one's brain that can fertilize the hippocampus and act as Miracle Grow for the brain. This, in turn, can reduce the likelihood of dementia and other forms of cognitive dysfunction. Every person, he says, can reach their own “real age” by choosing their method of activity. ”If you don't like walking, you can do gardening, you can play with your kids, you can play ping pong,” Dr. Roizen says. “It's any activity. Do things you love that love you back.” People can learn more of Dr. Roizen's ideas and programs for prolonging life through his book, The Great Age Reboot, or visiting the app, Reboot Your Age (greatagereboot.com). ***** Like many physicians now engaged in controlling the aging process, Dr. Michael Roizen entered the field from different medical specialties. He is board certified in both internal medicine and anesthesiology. He was running a step-down ICU at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center studying the outcome of patients who had undergone cardiovascular surgery. “It wasn't their cardiac history or their lung function or their liver function or kidney function or their brain function that determined outcome,” he discovered. “What determined the outcome was their age.” He then embarked on a new mission as a physician - motivating patients to take charge of the way they aged. Dr. Roizen served as Cleveland Clinic's first Chief Wellness Officer from 2007 to 2019. He now serves fifty percent time as the Cleveland Clinic's Chief Wellness Officer Emeritus, and the other half as a Professor at the Learner College of Medicine of the Cleveland Clinic at Case Western Reserve University. He is a recipient of an Emmy, an Elle, and the Paul Rogers Best Medical Communicator Award from the National Library of Medicine. He initiated and developed the RealAge concept to motivate behavior change. He believes that soon 90 will be the new 40, and how one can prepare for it is described in his most recent book, The Great Age Reboot, and Reboot Your Age app. Dr. Roizen is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College and became a member of the American Osteopathic Association after graduating from UCSF School of Medicine. He has authored over 195 peer reviewed scientific publications, four New York Times #1 bestsellers, and nine overall bestsellers. He and Dr. Mehmet Oz co-authored a daily column syndicated to over 100 newspapers that translates current scientific reports into actionable steps for lay audiences. A recipient of The United Way of Cleveland Humanitarian of the Year Award, Dr. Roizen has won over 75 trophies in class A squash competition. He practices what he preaches when it comes to enhancing his health and life expectancy, even working at a treadmill desk to help achieve his goal of walking at least 10,000 steps a day. He and his wife, who is also a medical doctor, have two children: Jenny, a PhD organic chemist working for the US Energy Department, and Jeffrey, an MD/PhD faculty member in pediatric endocrinology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. ***** Thank you to our Cutting Edge Health supporters: CZTL Methylene Blue Get a $10 discount by using this link: https://cztl.bz?ref=3OqY9 on an order of $70 or more OR use this discount code at checkout: jane10 Renue by Science: 10% off NMN https://renuebyscience.com/product/pure-nmn-sublingual-powder-30-grams/ Enter jane10 at checkout for 10% off. She believes many of the answers to a healthy life are found within. She views her role in life as your wellness guide. Common Pelvic Health Issues Dr. Betsy Greenleaf explains why your pelvic health is so important. It’s not the easiest healthcare aspect to talk about - we’re often embarrassed or ashamed to bring up what’s going on “down there.” But Betsy urges us all to overcome this shame because pelvic health is vital for longevity. One aspect of our pelvic healthcare is incontinence. For many women, even talking about this issue is a struggle. Many doctors will prescribe antibiotics or other medications, but Betsy suggests looking at your diet as an alternative route to explore. Another reason you might have incontinence is due to weaker pelvic floor muscles. Betsy explains how to perform a kegel exercise and how often you should practice each week. Diet Changes for Pelvic Floor Health As we age, our estrogen production lowers. This has an impact on our pelvic health and there are a few different avenues you can take to counter the loss. Along with diet changes and supplementation, Betsy recommends heat and laser therapies to help regenerate and repair your vaginal tissue. One of the most important lifestyle changes you can make to support your pelvic health is to change your diet. Betsy recommends cutting out or experimenting with cutting out, gluten, dairy, and sugar. It doesn’t have to be a permanent change unless you notice a positive impact. Betsy also suggests adding probiotics, such as yogurt and fermented foods, to your diet to support a healthy gut microbiome. Along with these foods, Betsy lists some of the supplements you might consider adding to your healthcare routine to support your urinary health. Are you concerned with your pelvic floor health? Do you experience incontinence? Call the Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic today and schedule your first appointment at 319-363-0033. They think that they’re the only person having these issues or chalk it up to aging. There are so many different things that can be done about a myriad of pelvic health issues.” [6:30] “If our gut’s affected, it affects our hormones and our immunity. To keep the pelvis healthy, we need to support the gut. Vitamin D deficiency is a major health concern in our country, but checking only your vitamin D level may be a moot point. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A review published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association may unveil the reason 50% of our population is low in Vitamin D. It turns out that vitamin D, without adequate magnesium may not do you any good. Doctors are regularly checking vitamin D and prescribing supplementation, but doing so without also checking magnesium could be a mistake. The recommended daily allowance for magnesium is 420 mg for males and 320 mg for females. Unfortunately, the average daily consumption through diet in the US contains only about half of that. Lesson – Vitamin D and Magnesium supplements should be prescribed together as well as tested together. For some, passing a kidney stone ranks as high on the pain scale as childbirth. But what if there were a way to ride out that process by literally going for a ride? Dr. David Wartinger, a Michigan State University urologist, professor emeritus claims that a trip to Walt Disney World may be just what the doctor ordered. The trick here, apparently, is to ride Big Thunder Mountain. In a pilot study, published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, Wartinger rode Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World 20 times while wearing a backpack with a synthetic 3D hollow kidney model. The model contained kidney stones measuring 4 millimeters or smaller. He found that sitting in the last car had a 64 percent passage rate versus a 16 percent passage rate in the first few cars. Sometimes folks, truth is stranger than fiction. Thank you for listening to the Stay Young Radio Show! Host: Jennifer Caudle, DO Host Jennifer Caudle, DO welcomes Robert Nagele, PhD, a Rowan University researcher and Professor at the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Nagele and his team are closing in on a new blood test to detect Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, MS, cancers and other diseases by searching for the autoantibodies created by the disease processes. The test has initially shown to be remarkably accurate in research trials with a capability to accurately assess the stage of disease. More important, it appears to detect pre-clinical disease, giving physicians an opportunity to intervene with lifestyle changes that delay or defer the onset of symptoms. This program was recorded live at the American Osteopathic Association's annual medical education conference, OMED2015 in Orlando, FL,
