Visit nascentmc.com/podcast for full show notes  Enmetazobactam for cUTI: The FDA approved enmetazobactam (Exblifep) for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) in adults, offering a new weapon against antimicrobial-resistant gram-negative bacteria. It's combined with cefepime, based on successful phase 3 trial results, and is expected to hit the US market soon, addressing the needs of approximately 3.6 million US patients annually. Orchid Pharma receives approval, highlighting the drug's priority review status due to its Qualified Infectious Disease Product designation. Dupilumab for COPD: Dupilumab (Dupixent) is under priority review by the FDA as a novel biologic therapy for certain adults with uncontrolled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), based on promising phase 3 trials. It targets interleukin signaling involved in COPD's inflammatory process, potentially reducing exacerbations and improving lung function over time. If approved, it would be a significant advancement for COPD treatment, offered by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Sanofi.  Melphalan Flufenamide Withdrawal: The FDA has withdrawn approval for melphalan flufenamide (Pepaxto) for certain multiple myeloma patients due to a lack of confirmed clinical benefit and safety concerns, marking the first application of new procedures for accelerated approval withdrawal. The decision follows the Food and Drug Omnibus Report Act amendments, concluding a process allowing manufacturer Oncopeptides an appeal opportunity. Teclistamab Biweekly Dosing: Teclistamab-cqyv (Tecvayli) receives FDA approval for biweekly dosing in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma patients who have maintained a complete response for six months, enhancing treatment flexibility. This approval is based on the phase I/II MajesTEC-1 study, demonstrating maintained responses and safety with the new dosing schedule, highlighting fewer severe infections and no new safety concerns.  Linvoseltamab in RRMM: The FDA has granted priority review to the biologics license application for linvoseltamab for treating adult patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma after at least three prior therapies. Targeted for an August 2024 decision, linvoseltamab aims to enhance T-cell activation against cancer cells, supported by promising results from the ongoing LINKER-MM1 trial, offering a new therapeutic option from Regeneron. ·       ChatGPT4 in medical writing and editing at learnAMAstyle.com ·       Nascentmc.com for medical writing assistance for your company. The topic of the first hour was the illegal immigrants, as Cutis says, that have flooded the nation. More specifically he referred to the numerous shoplifting incidents occurring lately, the recent beating of two police officers at Times Square and Eric Adam's open invitation to them for political reasons. He suggested that Hochul should be more aggressive in trying to deport them back to their countries. The second hour of the show had the topic of flying by airplane. Curtis started by reminiscing about one of his favorite airlines, people express or "people distress" as he liked to call them. Then he talked about JetBlue airlines and how it used to be the go to airlines when it started, with its offices at Queens Boulevard. Finally he discussed JetBlue and other american based airlines with callers. The topic of the third hour was plastic bottles vs glass bottles based on a conversation Curtis had with John Catsimatidis this past Friday. Curtis supported plastic bottles and was insisting that his favorite company, Poland Springs, produce its water at Poland and it is distributed via Poland Springs at Maine. The topic of the fourth hour was Eric Adams and how all his decisions the last two years have only turned the city for the worse. More specifically he complained about all the free benefits the Eric Adam's administration has been giving to the migrants, that are being paid from tax dollars, with the most recent being the 1000 dollar per month debit cards. Curtis also mentioned rappers like 50 cent and Snoop Dogg that have started making U-turns in their opinions when it comes to Trump as the next president. During the fifth hour of Another side of Midnight Curtis paid tribute to Genesis and Phill Collins who had his 73rd birthday during this week. He then debated with callers if Peter Gabriel's Genesis era was better or if the band saw its better years when Phil Collins took over after Gabriel's departure. The final hour was dedicated to Bernard McGuirk, since Monday marks the 8 year anniversary  of his first show on air with Sid Rosenberg. Curtis shared a lot of stories of Bernard McGuirk from his start into the broadcasting world till his last days. He also commented on Sid's return to the station on Monday together with some remarks from his time in Israel.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Book Vs. Movie: Freaky FridayThe Mary Rogers Children's Classic Vs. the 1976 & 2003 Disney AdaptationsIn December (because we have covered just about every holiday-themed Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving, and Hannukah film we can find)! The Margos turn our attention to all things Disney, and this year we begin with the classic Freaky Friday by Mary Rogers, which has been adapted a few times since its 1972 publication. Rogers, whose father was composer Richard Rogers, had a full career as a composer, screenwriter, and children's novelist with successes on stage like Once Upon a Mattress which ran on Broadway in 1959 and later toured the world. In 1972 she contributed to the Marlo Thomas album Free to Be You and Me (William's Doll) before completing Freaky Friday. The story of 13-year-old Annabel Andrews, who switches bodies with her mother only to discover being a parent is much harder than it looks. Annabell finds out her father is sexist and runs her mother ragged with demands on home life. Ultimately, she discovers that it was her mother the whole time who caused the body switch to show Annabel that she has her best interests in mind. The 1976 film stars Jodie Foster as Annabel and Barbara Harris as her mother, Ellen, with a screenplay by Rogers. One big difference is that the movie takes place in California versus New York City. Oh, and the racism casually featured in the book. (It's a big yikes there!) It was a huge hit that garnered several Golden Globes Awards nominations. In 1995, Shelly Long and Gaby Hoffman lead in the second adaptation. The 2003 film stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan and was a huge hit that is problematic today. So between them all--which did we like better? Have a listen to find out!Kensington Books and the novel Colorado Country by Diana Palmer sponsor this episode!New York Times bestselling author Diana Palmer takes readers to Christmastime in Colorado with two of her celebrated novellas in one collection featuring solitary, silent cowboys who find their restless hearts tamed by women of uncommon grace and strength. This a gift for readers who love heartwarming contemporary romance, gorgeous rugged cowboys, and fans of Carolyn Brown, Linda Lael Miller, and Delores Fossen. Meadow Dawson is struggling to manage the enormous ranch she just inherited. Too bad she's not on speaking terms with the one man who can help her out. Cattleman Dal Blake wishes Meadow's dog would quit digging under his fence—and that his pretty neighbor wasn't just as good at getting under his skin. . . Widowed schoolteacher Katy is starting over with her young daughter, and she knows the perfect place—her grandmother's Colorado ranch. A runaway Palomino brings reclusive horse wrangler Parker to her door. Parker knows all there is to know about horses, but with Katy, he's learning about the gift of family.Diana Palmer is the author of over 100 books and was voted one of the top 10 romance writers with over 40 million books in print. She is known as the “queen of desperado quests for justice and true love” (Publisher's Weekly) You can find her at Diana Palmer.com. We Need More Illustrations of People of Color in Medical Textbooks— The lack of diversity perpetuates health inequality and stereotypes "The consequences of primarily depicting White, lighter skinned individuals with Eurocentric features in medical images supports the persuasive concept of White supremacy. It perpetuates the belief that the White male body is "the standard" to which all other bodies should be compared. It leads to inequality in medical education and further perpetuates harmful stereotypes of Black individuals. As a result, this issue plays a role in inappropriate diagnosis and health management of Black individuals. Furthermore, medical care becomes subjective, discriminatory, and filled with speculatory assumptions based on stereotypes." Jenna C. Lester is founder of the Skin of Color dermatology program at UCSF, which addresses the  persistent issues that arise from the exclusion and marginalization of non-white patients in medical  research and practice. She is combatting medical disparities due to racial inequality, working to fill education gaps in textbooks and curriculum about non-white skin and training a new generation of  doctors. A graduate of Harvard University and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, she is an assistant professor of dermatology at UCSF where she practices and teaches general dermatology. Jenna's TedX Talk Susan Y. Then Robert asks Curtis to detail the cars specs (4:42) before 'taking us for a drive' (6:42) and talking about what exactly the car is capable of (9:14). Right before a break, the consider how creating the auto industry necessitated the gasoline industry and how some of the quirks of the car foreshadowed modern developments in the industry (10:34). Are you prepared to treat a U.S. military service member with acne or psoriasis? Civilian specialists are playing a larger role in the care of our military population. Josephine Nguyen, MD, president of the Association of Military Dermatologists, talks with Dr. Kristina Burke to help civilian dermatologists understand the concept of medical readiness. They also discuss skin conditions and treatments that are incompatible with military service and cannot be maintained in a deployed environment. "It’s not [meant] to be discriminatory; but it’s recognizing that, in this unique population, [service members] are going to be put into situations that are totally different than what they would be at home, and they have to be medically ready,” Dr. Burke explains. When treating a service member, you must consider patient satisfaction as well as his/her career and our nation’s security. We also bring you the latest in dermatology news and research: 1. Racial and ethnic minorities often don’t practice sun protective behaviors  Cultural beliefs, stigma, and personal preferences may affect behaviors. 2. Patients with atopic dermatitis should routinely be asked about conjunctivitis New onset conjunctivitis always should be referred to an ophthalmologist, especially in more severe cases when patients do not respond to antihistamine or artificial tears. 3. Measles cases have slowed but not stopped The CDC removes California from the list of active measles outbreaks. Things you will learn in this episode:  Military medicine is focused on medical readiness for U.S. military service members to deploy to locations across the globe and perform their duties. Dr. Burke explains medical readiness as "maintaining a person and a unit that is medically able to perform their military functions, both at home and in a deployed environment." Accession guidelines can disqualify a person from military service if symptomatic. A diagnosis of psoriasis or eczema is potentially disqualifying. Dr. Burke details why these conditions would be incompatible with military service. The key consideration is what’s going to happen when this patient is deployed and not able to access care. While service members are deployed, there is a lack of appropriate medication, a lack of refrigeration, and intense stress that can exacerbate an underlying condition such as psoriasis. She explains, “Mild cases can explode into severe flares when [service members] are under stress; when they’re in a different environment, an austere environment; and they’re not able to routinely access the care and the normal treatment that they would at home.” Acne treatment guidelines are the same in active-duty service members, but the therapies are worked around schedules for deployment and field training. For example, isotretinoin is a nondeployable medication — secondary to its side-effect profile, laboratory monitoring, and maintenance of the iPLEDGE system — and may be used when a service member comes home from deployment or is in between deployments. Unique populations such as aircrew members, special operations, and submariners have more restrictions on medications. For example, a flight crew member on doxycycline for acne will be grounded for a short period of time to monitor for side effects. Spironolactone and minocycline use also grounds aircrew members. “When a pilot takes medication, it can affect his or her spatial orientation,” Dr. Nguyen adds. “You can’t just give them a medication and assume that there will be no side effects.” Civilian dermatologists with questions about how to treat a service member can consult the Association of Military Dermatologists and Military Dermatology columns published in Cutis.  Hosts: Elizabeth Mechcatie; Terry Rudd; Josephine Nguyen, MD (Captain James A. As young, college students, having a child with a disability wasn’t on their radar. Alyssa and Ben were shocked when they learned at their 23-week anatomy scan that their son, Will, had some brain abnormalities.  They were heavily encouraged to abort their son. He has defied doctor’s limited predictions and is a joy to have in their lives. Every Baby Deserves a Chance Finding out your son is going to be different Alyssa recalled the moment they first found out that their son, Will, was going to be different than what they expected.  She said, “During the ultrasound, our doctor saw a cyst and said what he described as ‘a horseshoe.’.the head measured smaller than it was supposed to, .so he sent us up to Madison Memorial Hospital that has more updated equipment where they could have a radiologist look at it.” The next day their doctor received the results and called Alyssa and Ben.  It was what he had previously thought, there was a cyst and his head was measuring smaller than it should have.  He recommended a specialist to look at it to make sure. The specialist was able to see them a few days later and gave them a grim diagnosis. He told Alyssa and Ben that their baby had an encephalocele, the brain was being pushed into a sack.  He said that their child had less than one percent change of living past 30 weeks pregnancy.  They asked, “What about if the baby lives?” To which he replied, “I guess there is a chance, like a tiny, tiny chance, and if the baby lives, he’ll have absolutely no quality of life. He won’t most, he won't walk, he may live a couple of hours after birth, and if he lives more than that, he won’t do anything. He’ll be a vegetable.”  The only thing he could offer them was an abortion. It took awhile for reality to set in After they received this news, Ben said, “I was definitely very, very scared, and I don’t think it really hit us.  It took a while for it really to sink in that there wasn’t going to be a possibility for Will to survive.” A few weeks after they met with the specialist is when Ben said they really felt the full facts of there being little to no chance of Will surviving.  He said, “It was kind of like a slap in the face..so it was definitely very scary and almost not realistic, like not real.” Choosing full intervention after birth After Alyssa hit 31 and 32 weeks, they realized that Will was doing great.  They planned for his birth with a scheduled C-section. The doctor told them that she didn’t expect Will to live.  Alyssa and Ben said that they wanted full intervention so they could have a little time with him. Their doctor agreed.   With the big machines booted up and the NICU teams standing by, they started her C-section.  Alyssa said, “..the doctor who said that he would come out blue and not breathing, took him out and suctioned his mouth, and then he opened his mouth, looked at her and screamed and started crying right at her.” Having one plan after you give birth They had been told for most of their pregnancy that Will would die either before, during, or shortly after birth.  Alyssa and Ben shared that their only plan after he was born was to have a funeral. They had picked out the cemetery plots, and the casket.  “That’s what our plan was; we didn’t really plan for when he would live because no one gave us hope.” They had to quickly drop their original plan and come up with a new one.  Will shocked all of the doctors with how vigorous and how well he thrived.   Cutis aplasia congenita After he was born, Will received his official diagnosis of cutis aplasia congenita with a developmental delay.  Typically when someone has cutis aplasia they have a quarter sized hole of missing skin in the back of their head. Sometimes the bone is there or not there. Will is missing the entire back of his head.   Typically, they can let bone and skin grow in, however, Will’s is so significant, Alyssa said, “..It gets really difficult as to ‘how so you cover that with no bone to cover?
