She hopes to instil a culture of radical enquiry in her students so they can become active designers-translators-catalysts for a complex and uncertain world.  In this episode, Anab shared great insights on Design for futures; we started the episode by defining design for the futures and what is the design process when working on a project focused on the future. Then we discussed navigating that uncertainty in work and how designers can balance the need for innovation and creativity with practicality and functionality in their designs. Later, we discussed why ethical considerations are critical when designing for the future and how do designers ensure their work is inclusive and representative of different perspectives and experiences. As Co-founder and Director of Superflux - the multi-award winning design agency - they translate future uncertainty into present day choices Over the last 15 years, Anab has gained international recognition for her work and commentary on design, innovation, emerging technologies and complex futures. She is the recipient of many, many awards. She has delivered talks and keynotes at several conferences including TED, MIT Media Lab and MOMA's to name but three. In addition, Anab was appointed Professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 2016, where she leads the Design Investigations (ID2) Program. In this conversation we talked about how and why we think about the future is all wrong. In particular we talked about: 1. Who or what gives you hope for the future? 2. How do you translate future uncertainty into present day choices? 3. What is human exceptionalism, and why are you calling time on it? So I started out by asking her, why do you not like to make predictions about the future? Are you saying that I have to stop practicing Human Centered Design? Well yeah that's basically the answer. According to Nik Parekh human centered design has brought a lot of positive change to the world but it's not sustainable. And to be honest Nik isn't the first one to make this argument. Former guests like Mauricio Manhaes and Anab Jain have also made a similar plea. We have to adopt a different design approach which is even more inclusive... Nik shares some inspiring examples how we can do that. The other topic you'll learn about in this episode is the one of #standardisation. Especially how far can you standardize the service experience without losing touch with the local context? This doesn't only apply to services offered by global brands... this applies to every service provider because local might be as small as your street! Finally talks about the next frontier for designers which is #law. I didn't see that one coming either. But it's interesting to think about what would happen when privacy policies, terms of use and yes even laws would be the outcome of a design process. In which way would the result be different than what it is today? ** Pass It Forward ** If enjoyed this episode and found it helpful please consider sharing it with just 1 other person you know. Human Centered Design is getting a lot of attention these days. But what are we giving up if we put the human at the center? What are the limits of our current practice?

Welcome to Visionaries, a podcast dedicated to futurological thinkers brought to you by Future Human and the V&A. We seek out people who are reimagining innovation in their field and ask them to apply their intelligence to emerging trends. Anab Jain and Jon Arden are the directors of Superflux, a design consultancy and research lab based in India and the UK. The work of Superflux focuses on how emerging technologies are changing our everyday life and environment, with the ambition of helping companies make these tools more accessible. They describe how breakthroughs in synthetic biology are informing their work, from gene sequencing projects that seek to identify the alleles that determine human intelligence to DARPA’s efforts to create ‘natural drones’ by hacking the brains of bees. How can designers shape the way advanced technologies are experienced and understood by the general public? And will their role grow increasingly redundant at a time when products can be designed anywhere in the world, and then manufactured locally and cheaply at great speed? Presented by Ben Beaumont Thomas.
