Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. COLIN STETSON Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player, eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively, live and in studio, with a wide range of bands and musicians including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Hamid Drake, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Fink, and David Gilmore. Meanwhile he has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophones and clarinets, his intense technical prowess matched by his exhilarating and emotionally gripping skills as a songwriter. Stetson's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stemming from that approach and aesthetic, he has been contributing regularly to the world of film, TV, and game scoring over the past decade with such titles as Hereditary (2018), The First (2018), Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), Barkskins (2020), Mayday (2021), Among The Stars (2021), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Menu (2022), and Uzumaki (2023). Get a gorgeous mountain range in view and savor that green chile omelette with Migizi Pensoneau (“Reservation Dogs”), who takes us from Minnesota to New Mexico to Connecticut to… well, just get ready to travel. And bring your love of 80's/90's absurdist comedies with you! Plus: more love for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and the scrumptiously watchable “Barkskins!"
“Anthopological Machine.” The Open: Man and Animal, Stanford University Press, 2002. In our final episode we dive into the role art and culture play in cultivating long-termism at scale. Far from being window dressing, art and culture forms the operating systems of our world; it has the power to shift our collective identity. Culture doesn't just reflect societal norms, it has the power to change, iterate and manifest new ones. We'll meet the artists, creators and curators who are using time as both their medium and their message, and explore the role of creativity in shifting us to a long-term society.Special thanks to the contributors to this episode, Brian Eno, Bridgit Antoinette Evans, Katie Paterson, Jeremy Lent, Anab Jain and Sherri Mitchell.Discover more about Brian Eno here.Find out more about the work of Bridgit Antoinette Evans and the Pop Culture Collaborative here.Discover Katie Paterson's work here and delve into the Future Library.Find out about Jeremy Lent's work including The Patterning Instinct here.Experience the work of Anab Jain and Superflux here.Find out about Sherri Mitchell's projects and writing here.If you want to delve deeper into Long Time ideas, here is a suggested reading list!NON-FICTION Deep Time Reckoning - Vincent IalentiFutureGen - Jane DavidsonTimefulness - Marcia BjornerudThe Precipice - Toby OrdPip Pip - Jay GriffithsThe Clock of the Long Now - Steward BrandThe Good Ancestor - Roman KrznaricDoughnut Economics - Kate RaworthSandtalk - Tyson YunkaportaThe Patterning Instinct - Jeremy LentThe War for Kindness - Jamil ZakiBraiding Sweetgrass - Robin Wall-KimmererUnderland - Robert MacfarlaneThe Oldest Living Things in the World - Rachel Sussman Sacred Instructions - Sherri MitchellFICTIONKindred- Octavia ButlerThe Parable Series - Octavia ButlerThe Ministry for the Future - Kim Stanley RobinsonThe OverStory - Richard PowersMan V. On this episode we discuss what movies and TV shows we've been watching: Greyhound, Dirty John Season 2, Doom Patrol, Search Party, Barkskins and How Do You Know?
Craig Elsten starts the podcast with a quick recommendation of "Alone", on Netflix and the History Channel. Then, he is joined by the showrunner of "Barkskins" and "The Bridge", Elwood Reid, to find out about the challenges and joys of adapting a novel about 17th century New France into a modern television series.
Nadine is back to talk about books we've read and liked recently, and we also end up thinking more about campus novels, mighty tomes, and short science fiction. Craig Elsten and Liddy Loree begin with the industry news of a price hike at YouTube TV, and other midseason Top-5 lists. Then, they take on HBO's I May Destroy You, and how Michaela Coel has created a show that uniquely confronts issues of sexual permission, young culture, drug use and power in relationships. Could it be another contender for the #1 show of the year? Plus, reviews of Barkskins (Hulu), The Great (Hulu) and Quiz (AMC), and why Craig is loving Floor Is Lava.
Two-thirds of the hosts failed to watch the assigned movie for this week so this is an episode about nothing where we talk about the show about nothing. And Mosquitoes. And buying gold. We also introduce a new sponsor.
Mari and Melissande face each other at the "domo" of Trepagny, and Melissande asserts her authority. When Trepagny arrives home, he sides with Melissandre-- which ultimately leads to Mari's decision to move out with her son. In Wobik, Mathilde confronts Cooke and lets him know that she has Renardette in her custody. Mathilde begs Cooke to do no harm to the young girl, but can we really trust Cooke's promises? We also learn that Delphine's would-be husband broke things off with her because of the "woodcutter's mark" on her stomach. Delphine discusses this with Melissandre... who tells Delphine about her own secret in order to help Delphine get past what's happened to her. Later, Trepagny, Bouchard, and a group of men search for Rene and Father Gabriel, and they discover the two with a group of Iroquois. Chaos ensues, and most of the party end up dead. Trepagny, Bouchard, and Rene flee and end up heading back to Wobik... where, unbeknownst to Trepagny, Melissandre is staying at the inn. David Thewlis stars in National Geographic’s upcoming limited series BARKSKINS, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Annie Proulx. BARKSKINS, premiering this Memorial Day on National Geographic, examines the mysterious massacre of settlers in the vast and unforgiving wilds of 1690s New France that threatens to throw the region into all-out war. The series tells a thrilling story of exploration, adventure and ambition among dreamers and fighters — some with a utopian vision of the world, others crass and conniving, but all navigating the perils of a treacherous new frontier. As tensions escalate, unlikely alliances are forged, old antagonisms deepen and new families are formed against the seemingly endless natural riches and hidden dangers of the new American continent. BARKSKINS’ depiction of the collision between civilization and commerce is timeless, as is its spirit of adventure, natural wonder and survival of the fittest. Thewlis portrays Claude Trepagny — a wealthy landowner with grand visions for New France. His romantic challenges and controversial religious beliefs will complicate his life over the course of the season. With a career spanning over 30 years, veteran actor David Thewlis has worked with some of the world's leading writers and directors. Movie fans will recognize David as the enchanting Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter franchise. He also starred as the villainous Ares the God of War in Wonder Woman opposite Gal Gadot. Additional film credits include the acclaimed cult hit The Big Lebowski, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, and the gangster thriller Legend with Tom Hardy, to name just a few. David will soon be seen in the second instalment in the Avatar franchise from James Cameron.
