On n'a qu'à demander à Johnny.
For only the second time in four-plus years and 220 episodes, there's a show where Erik & Weldon are in the same room at the same time! And since Erik is visiting Vancouver, we've decided to make the city (and surroundings) the star of the show! First up is Patty Surbey with "Hey Boy," a corny but super-fun number that PS elevates through her wild vocal stylings. Then there's The Nocturnals with "Because You're Gone" which has a cool Peter Gunn-type riff and an overall Pacific Northwest Sound. The climax comes from The Painted Ship's "And She Said Yes," one of the wildest rock'n'roll vocal performances of any era. But there's no falling action! because then we get to hear "Hard to Cry" by The Northwest Company - a riff-driven rocker that points the way to the future. Finally, we throw a kurvbal at you and discuss "an ode to da levy" - a poem by 60s Vancouver King Beatnik bill bissett. Enjoy your stay!

To mark Henry Mancini's 100th birthday, music expert JonBurlingame takes us back to where the composer's prolific career really took off - the 1960s TV show Peter Gunn.
El segundo álbum es “Rock out with… Live at Ciro’s”, el único disco en vivo registrado por Dick Dale, el rey de la guitarra surf, en el club californiano Ciro’s a comienzos de 1965, poco antes de que llegase a su fin la primera etapa de su trayectoria.Playlist;(sintonía) THE VENTURES “Introduction” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “The cruel sea (The Cruel Surf)” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Penetration” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Bulldog” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “I feel fine” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “The house of the rising sun” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Out of limits” (Live in Japan’65”)THE VENTURES “Slaughter on 10th avenue” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Besame mucho twist” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Medley; Walk don’t run – Lullaby of the leaves - Perfidia” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Driving guitars (Ventures twist)” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Surf rider” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Journey to the stars” (Live in Japan’65)THE VENTURES “Diamond head” (Live in Japan’65)DICK DALE “Peter Gunn” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Angry generation” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Summertime blues” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Blowin’ in the wind” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Don’t stop now” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “Let’s go trippin’65” (Live At Ciro's)DICK DALE “What’d I say” (Live At Ciro's)Escuchar audio

We've already covered a couple of Journey albums. Episode 250 profiled "Infinity," the introduction of Steve Perry to the group. And episode 26 delved into arguably the high water mark for Journey, the album "Escape." Here we take a look at the band as they are in their transition into one of the world's biggest rock bands. The appropriately-titled album Evolution is Journey's fifth studio album. Here we find Steve Perry settling in as front man while still sharing lead vocal duties with keybaordist Gregg Rolie. They have also replaced drummer Aynsley Dunbar with Steve Smith, previously with Ronnie Montrose's band. The band is continuing to explore a more radio-friendly sound. The lineup for this band includes Perry, Rolie, and Dunbar, along with Neil Schon on guitar, and Ross Valory on bass.At the time, "Evolution" was the band's most successful album, and it reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also featured their first single to enter the top 20. The album was actually released in March of 1979, but was recorded in the fall of 1978. We're featuring it in January of 1979 because - well - that's where we were able to fit it in.Brian rejoins us in todays podcast to sub for an absent Wayne, and to profile this album. Too LateA deeper cut written by Perry and Schon, this song was written about a friend from Steve Perry's hometown who was wrestling with addiction to drugs. It was a plea to get out of town and the surroundings that fed his addiction before it was too late to break the chains of addiction.Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'The biggest hit from the album is a slow rocker with a shuffle beat. It hit number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1979, the group's first foray into the top 20. The song is based on a true story about a cheating woman who finds out that turnabout is fair play - and that cheating on a songwriter can result in your being memorialized in a song.City of the AngelsWhile they were known as a San Francisco band, this album track pays homage to Los Angeles. It was written by Perry, Schon and Rolie. On the album, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" immediately leads into this track, and you will occasionally hear these played together on album-oriented stations and satellite radio.Just the Same WayThis single finds Gregg Rolie taking turns with Perry on lead vocals. It was written by Rolie, Schon, and Ross Valory, making it the only song on the album not written or co-written by Steve Perry. It is an infatuation song, with a great call-and-answer in the chorus between Rolie and Perry. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Pink Panther Theme by Henry ManciniThe Saturday morning cartoon show with a silent protagonist, "The Pink Panther," ended its run after 10 years. STAFF PICKS:Gold by John StewartLynch's staff pick is a top 5 hit from John Stewart's album "Bombs Away Dream Babies," his first solo top 40 hit. Both Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks contributed to the album, and Nicks provides backing vocals on this song. The vocals describe the dark, cynical side of the recording industry.Planet Claire by The B-52'sRob brings us a musical interpretation of a B-rated sci-fi movie. Once the instrumental and sound-effects - with a Peter Gunn-inspired beat - give way to Fred Schneider's vocals, we find that the girl is from Planet Claire, drives a Plymouth Satellite, and "some say she's from Mars, or one of the seven stars that shine after 3:30 in the morning. Well, she isn't!"Dance the Night Away by Van Halen Bruce features the first US top 20 hit by Van Halen. This song is unusual because it is the only song on the "Van Halen II" album that originated in the studio rather than as a song the group had honed on tour for a long time. It also downplays Eddie Van Halen's guitar virtuosity and brings up the vocal harmonies. Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" was an inspiration for this single.Rock n Roll Fantasy by Bad CompanyBrian's staff pick was written by Bad Co. front man Paul Rogers, and reflects the truth that Rock music is escapism, a fantasy to take you away from the stress of the everyday world for a bit. It was the lead single from the album "Desolation Angels." While not their highest charting single, it is their best selling single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture "Alien"The disturbing soundtrack was one element of what made this sci-fi horror film so creepy. By popular request we are replaying all the of the Spyvibe Segments from Jason Whiton. This week Peter Gunn.
The podcast is on holiday right now so we are replaying some of our favourite episodes as part of a summer series. In June, The Fin spoke with AFR Magazine culinary editor Jill Dupleix about a trend in Australian dining that was bugging her. All the restaurant menus looked the same. She wrote a story for the magazine about this and on the cover was a photograph of a cracked plate with Kingfish crudo prepared in four different ways. So please enjoy this discussion with Jill about the broken business model for Australian restaurants and why some food trends have lingered for more than a decade. Background reading: Why the world's best restaurant is taking up residency down under Chef Mauro Colagreco is bringing a team of 20 to create a uniquely Sydney version of his three-Michelin star French diner Mirazur. Why top restaurateurs are opening spin-offs right next door You can do degustation at Ides in Melbourne, and now you can go next door to March and settle for a bar snack also prepared by chef Peter Gunn.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Okay, busy boy does gearhead goodness: good pipes on slushbox BR-Zs (awww), Volvo households and 244s (turbo!), car racism and Tiptronic, automatic trannies for off-road effect, avoiding Chinese tires, new-car reality versus the electric car market and the “Cold Snap Sprint” (home), the 80-40 ice fog freakout, REI (bad) versus four-wheeling (good), and the big Louisiana fog crash (holy shed). More: discretion versus valor (pull off and have a burrito), pilots versus shrooms (and 83 counts of attempted murder for Captain Stupid), UFC refuses to learn from Bud Light's fail, and a big Garage Hour R.I.P. to excellent weirdos Richard Mull (“Bull” from Night Court) and Matthew Perry from Friends (don't do drugs then hit the hot tub). …Sounds from Peter Gunn, Vibravoid, God Lives Underwater, and thoughts about sounds from Iron Maiden.

Award-winning author Jon Burlingame joins the podcast for an entertaining review of the best in TV music, as told in his new book, "MUSIC FOR PRIME TIME." Jon recounts wonderful stories of the earliest TV series and how their theme songs and scores were developed. Some of the classic shows we revisit are Peter Gunn, Rawhide, The Man From Uncle, The Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy, The Flintstones, Roots, and The Avengers. We also discuss composers Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Quincy Jones, and Billy Goldenberg's early work with Stephen Spielberg. Jon also tells us the story of how "Friends" may have saved the TV Theme song. And we share our admiration for current composers who are keeping TV music as popular as ever with their scores for HBO'S GAME OF THRONES & WESTWORLD, Disney's THE MANDALORIAN, and the Netflix hit STRANGER THINGS. This is an entertaining and informative look back at the history of TV music that ends with a positive look at the bright future ahead.Jon Burlingame is the nation's foremost writer on music for TV and Film. For decades, British alt-pop goddess Kate Bush had never had a Top 10 hit in America. Now, in 2022, she finds herself in the Hot 100's Top Five—and television got her there. Her classic “Running Up That Hill” is featured prominently in the latest season of Netflix's hit '80s horror fantasy show Stranger Things. This puts Bush in a long lineage of hits spawned or made bigger by TV, dating all the way back to Davy Crockett and Peter Gunn, through Hawaii Five-O and Happy Days, and peaking in the '80s with Miami Vice and Family Ties. Join host Chris Molanphy as he walks through more than six decades of hits from the so-called boob tube and reveals why—thanks to our streaming age—Kate Bush's hit might be the biggest TV tune of all.
