Ray Anthony James, Ph.D. is an Organic Chemist, Nutritional Supplement Product Developer, researcher, educator, author, and speaker, with over 28 years in the pharmaceutical industry and at the FDA. He has over 30 patents and peer-reviewed scientific publications combined. As a Lead Investigator at Pharmacopeia and Ligand Pharmaceuticals and Principal Scientist at Intrexon Corporation from 1998 until 2015, he was involved in designing drugs for cancer and inflammation. He quit all the farce in 2016 to pursue his lifelong dream of BEING on EARTH and serving the soil and humanity. Today, Ray is a partner / founder of The Moringa Group, Gleeful Monkey, TMG Omega Limited, Soil Biotica, and Kissing Tadpoles Publishing Company, and a backyard Organic Farmer. He is the author of the children's nutrition book, Veggie Rhapsody: I want you in my Lunch!. Our conversation covers: His childhood in rural Jamaica with no plumbing on his home farm, frugal use of food, free roaming in nature, and not knowing he was ‘poor.' As a teen he dreamed of a university education in the U.S. as he became fascinated with studying science and understanding why his ‘impoverished' lifestyle with simple foods and herbs led to such good health. How he became enmeshed in the ‘expected' path of a pharmaceutical career and the stresses of conventional life but saw his interests shifting as he and his wife studied nutrition and herbs. His time at the FDA led to a personal crisis and serious consideration of more holistic alternatives to pharmaceuticals. He recalled the role of Moringa in health in his childhood in Jamaica, began finding research studies on Moringa and helped a friend reverse diabetes with Moringa, and his company was born. Now in his holistic life and business, “my problems are light… my spirit has changed, my breathing has changed, my life has changed, I feel like I'm getting younger, I'm becoming this new wholesome person that is giving and accepting love.”Moringa is native to India and is a ‘miracle tree' that requires no pesticides and can turn deserts into forests. It prevents malnutrition and has been scientifically evaluated for its ability to improve immunity, GI health, skin, hair, stress response, blood sugar, liver and kidney diseases, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It is very high in antioxidants and nutrients for cellular regeneration. He is setting up a regenerative Moringa farm in Jamaica on the model of multi-story forest agriculture, letting native plants flourish via intercropping of the Moringa trees for soil health and native species flourishing. The farm will provide local employment and a sustainable agriculture learning center for flourishing of people, plants, animals, insects, and soil.Ray and I both tear up talking about how human existence is dependent on soil microbes, and how plants and soil microbes cooperate in a way that is humbling for humans. As Ray says, “the plants themselves, they know what they want, and I just have to be the steward… the plant determines what nutrients it wants and tells the microbes and attracts them to its root system…it's a whole conversation going on below the soil.” With all the sustainable and regenerative options now available, it's clear that we get to choose whether we want to live in ‘chemical soup' or in life-enhancing ways.
Chapter 33 starts Ray and Margie arriving at the Fine Time with a hero's welcome. Many Cones is a podcast novel based on true crime. The murders inspiring this crime fiction took place 30 miles from Chicago in Northwest Indiana, and captivated the area from the initial brutal crime scene all the way through and beyond discovery of a shockingly bizarre motive. The “Fine Time” was relatively uncrowded for a Saturday night. Word of the late morning and afternoon arrests had spread. As Ray and Margie entered the establishment, all discussion ceased. Half the patrons nodded or waved. Then everyone went back to their own problems and celebrations. Ramon raised his cocktail glass in salute as Ray passed, heading for a back table. By the time he sat, a waitress was serving his scotch. Margie was asked her preference. She requested a vodka, rocks. They settled comfortably into their chairs. Margie was served. They toasted each other, touched glasses, and took a long sip. Ray set his glass on his white napkin, and lit a Pall Mall. Margie pulled a cigarette from her pack, which Ray also lit. He pocketed his old zippo and stared warmly at his companion. She took a deep hit, and asked, “So where’s the girl without the E?” Ray thought for a second, realized what she was talking about, and said, “Carol Lombard!” Margie smiled at Ray’s discomfort. “Yeah. Carol Lombard. Is she working tonight?” Ray’s discomfort slowly disappeared. “No. We were together last night. I told her I would probably be busy all night. I didn’t know how lucky we were going to get or how long everything would take.” Ray was leery of sending the wrong message. He decided he was being juvenile and finished his thought. “She took the day off, and her and her mother and daughter went out of town to visit relatives.” Margie noticed the contradiction. Ray staring at her with big moony eyes, and yet telling her he was with his girlfriend last night. He was a piece of work. No wonder his relationships didn’t last long. She continued the flirtation. “Do you and her have a serious thing going?” “Yes we do. As serious as I am capable of. I seem to surround myself with experienced, understanding women. Like Carol. And like you.” Before Margie had a chance to respond, Regis Cahan walked in. Ramon pointed to Ray’s table and Regis approached the two. Ray introduced Regis to Margie, and he joined them. As he sat, the waitress served his Black Jack. Cahan held his glass high. “You guys saved her life. I can’t thank you enough. She means more to me than any person I have ever met.” He took a sip. Ray said, “We got lucky. Actually, she saved herself. How is she doing?” “She took sixteen stitches in her breast. Everything else was bumps and bruises. Nothing broken. She wanted to go home after they cleaned her up, but they’re making her spend the night. To be on the safe side.” Grandisha continued, “How’s her family handling it?” “They’re petrified. Worse off than she is. But that’s to be expected. They’re all very close. Very loving...” Regis paused, smiled, and asked, “Did she really elbow the guy?”

We sit and have an awesome one on two chat with Emily Siero and her journey to Stand up, Film and now The Podcast world. We learn about her passion to be a comedian, which stems from acting and growing up in a big traditional Italian Family. Emily explains how she got into podcasting. How hearing from a friend about a podcast pitch idea for a contest the day before the competition, played a huge role in her having a podcast today. "Work it, Own it" podcast is all about self healing, self care, self improvement. As Ray puts it, "a memoir of her life and experiences it comes across to the avid listener". A quality that we later learn comes from listening to her grandparents tell the same damn stories over and over again. Haha! Emily simply puts it, it helped with her monologue and storytelling ability. That she now skillfully uses in her podcast to connect with her audience very organic way. Emily explains how Yoga helped with her physical insecurities in high school. That one of the reasons she decided to become a Yoga instructor, to help others suffering as well; not to mention the flexible hours it lent to an aspiring actress. Emily gets deep telling us about her past abusive relationship and how she got out! She's Owned it, and triumph over it, so much so, that she's taken it on the road with her as part of her stand up material. We truly hope you enjoy this episode she just pure energy the entire time. When we consider personal branding, we often view it through a self-centered lens. In a world that preaches authenticity - to “be yourself” - applying the phrase can be difficult especially in the real world. Yet, as Ray Edwards shares in this episode, if you’re an entrepreneur, either you control what you do or what you do controls you. If you want to build value around a skill, not only must you apply it within a specific lane but differentiate it by selling your history. As Ray states, the storytelling behind your passion can’t be undermined. What makes you interesting is your story and your story can’t be detached from your skill; hence, why being yourself can be the best marketing strategy. Dare to ask yourself, “How do differentiate yourself? What’s your ‘thing’? What are you known for you?” Resources Ray Edwards: https://rayedwards.com Connect with Dan www.dancockerell.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dancockerell/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/dancockerell/ Facebook - www.facebook.com/dancockerellspeaker
Today, I am bringing my good friend Ray Edwards back onto the show. He just released his new book, Permission to Prosper. The book is all about money, self-worth, and why it’s okay to do well. It’s about time those of us who are building businesses fixed our mindset around the issue of wealth. As Ray says, not only do we have permission to prosper, but a mandate to multiply. Ray also taught me that an abundance of money won’t fix a poverty of spirit. If you think you live with a poverty mindset, tune in to our amazing conversation where talk about: How he went about writing Permission to Prosper The mindset shifts he had to make when money started coming in Changing our understanding of wealth at an atomic level Wealth and self-worth What Ray’s book is all about Accepting generosity from others Why equal distribution of wealth helps no one Making our lives more valuable in the automation age Resources: Permission to Prosper: How to be Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams by Ray Edwards Ray’s website The Ray Edwards Show Connect with Mike: https://mikekim.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mikekimtv/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikekimtv Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mikekimtv/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/mikekimtv YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MikeKim *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Along with co-founder Mark Zheng, Ray Li is out to “mainstream custom clothing” with their brand Sene. Sene stems from Ray’s passion for eliminating the misguided notion of the “ideal body” and creating clothes that fit anybody. It produces an accessible alternative for those who strive to get custom-fitted suits or jeans at a reasonable price. As Ray mentions in the episode, “our mission is to empower people of all shapes and sizes to feel their best.” Although the idea seems full proof, increasing its growth was a challenge, as Ray recalls. Listen to today's episode of The Story of a Brand as Ramon Vela interviews Ray, and they discuss overcoming those challenges, especially as a new company, to break old traditions. In part 1, Ray discusses the following: Ray’s mentor experience, Sene and what it is; Expressing the brand mission; Creating accessible custom clothing; Breaking boundaries in mainstream fashion; The first attempt in creating Sene; Adapting the brand to COVID complications; and much more. As Ray heads into the last week of this series on growing the church in tough times, he takes us into the Biblical call to preach the Good News, emphasizing the need to communicate well and with the empowering of the Spirit.
As Ray continues to teach on the need for the Holy Spirit, he opens up the powerful truth that the Spirit of God wants to use and work through every believer in the life of the local church!

Diane Dayton This is changing the rules, a podcast about designing the life you want to live, hosted by KC Dempster and Ray Loewe, the luckiest guy in the world.KC Dempster Good morning, everybody. Welcome to changing the rules. I'm KC Dempster. And I have Ray Loewe with me, the, he hates this, the self proclaimed luckiest guy in the world. You know, all through our lives, people have been setting rules for us. First it was our parents and then teachers, church. And as we get older employers and you know, the list goes on. And the rules are originally meant to control us, but usually in a positive way. They are trying to give a structure and guidance to keep us safe. But over time, a lot of these rules lose their relevance to us and they can become restrictive to what we want to do. And so this podcast is designed to help us build our own set of rules those that are important to us. And that work for us. We all need rules, but they need to be our rules. And when we change the rules to our rules, we become free. Free to be ourselves. Good morning, Ray.Ray Loewe Good morning. And I'm all for this being free to be yourself Stuff, you know, rules, rules, rules, there's too many of them. And you know, it's not bad enough that we have the old rules, we get new rules all the time. And that's one of the things we're going to talk about today. So, I have been studying adult, all my adult life, people that I call the luckiest people in the world. And they're there those people that you'll want to be there that the people that everything always seems together, they have an aura of luck about them. And it's not the lottery winners that we're talking about. It's the people that, you know, are constantly lucky, almost everything that they do turns into a golden opportunity. And I think it's because they make it happen. So 1let me set Kind of a definition of the luckiest people in the world that I've evolved. And I'd like to define the luckiest people in the world as those people that personally design their own lives. They take control of their own lives, and they live their own lives to the max. And to do this, they use a series of mindsets. And one of them is changing the rules. They don't mess around with rules, they, they figure out how to make them work for them. And our guest today, really, we're going to introduce three rules. We've introduced them before, but I think it's really important that we reinforced them again. One of the rules deals with change. And we've all been smacked by this virus. And all of a sudden, we were told you're not allowed to go out of your house, you have to stay home you have to be social distance. And boy did that throw a damper in the role of people who are out there trying to make a living. And I think that's one of the things that the luckiest people in the world have overcome. The second thing that they do is they always, always, always find a positive outcome in everything. And is because they're optimistic. It's because of the way they look at things. But uh, but they work at it to make that happen. And finally, at the end, they come back and they take everything that they've got, and they put it in a plan and they figure out how they're going to work with this going forward. So we're going to take a break in a moment and when we come back, we're going to reintroduce Marc Bernstein Marc has been on our show before, he's a semi regular, but he always has wisdom to import, impart, and he very, very definitely is one of the luckiest people in the world. So let's take a short break Taylor.Diane Dayton You're listening to changing the rules with k Dempster and Ray Loewe the luckiest guy in the world. We will be right back with more exciting information.Ray Loewe Okay, Marc Bernstein Are you there?Marc Bernstein I'm here Ray.Ray Loewe Okay, so, uh, Mark, reintroduce yourself, I could do that. But there's nobody better to do that. Tell us what you do for a living. And then we'll get into your book and a couple of other things.Marc Bernstein Well, I am a financial planner that I prefer to call myself a fiscal therapist. And that name came from the book or the book came from what I do, but it's called The Fiscal Therapy solution. 1.0. And I find that I call myself that because what I do and what my team does goes a lot deeper than traditional financial planning. It really goes into really understanding our clients, really understanding what it is they value, what they want, what their attitudes are. about money and other things. And then once we know them starting to develop a plan. And the last thing we talk about our financial products, which, unfortunately is what the industry usually discusses, as the first thing,Before we go on real quick, can I make a book recommendation based on your introduction today? Sure. So I'm reading very slowly because I want to absorb it all call it and it's pretty well known called The Untethered Soul. by Michael A. Singer. And it talks exactly about what you're talking about living your own life, and finding your own path. And actually, the book that got me interested in that was the book prior to that. He actually wrote it later. It's like the prequel that he wrote, but I think it helps to read it first because it tells his life story, which is fascinating. And it's called The Surrender Experiment. And what he talks about is his life, which basically he was a hippie in the late 1960s and The early 1970s and he really just wanted to live out in the woods and meditate. And by pursuing his path, he eventually developed a meditation center which became a temple, which people started coming from all over the country, developed into a business. He ended up being the CEO of a multi billion dollar corporation.Little temple in rural Florida. And it's ironic, what's opened opportunities. It's a fascinating story. And he's become a speaker on the subject and he's a he's a great source of information for people that are looking to live their own lives. And as an inspiration lately,Ray Loewe so well, you know, I've I've known you for a long time and probably going on 30 years over here maybe longer than that. And, and I know you're an attorney, and I'll forgive you for that. Okay, so attorneys are meant to deal with rules. I've never known you to be a rules guy. Really, I think you've always been able to take a look at the rules and figure out how to make things happen that you needed to make happen, to feel happy to be yourself. And we got hit not too long ago, you know, I remember the last time I met you, you know, we met because you were out on the road, you were out seeing people and, and now all of a sudden we have social distancing. And we can't do that anymore. So, so how did that strike you when it happened? And then we'll talk about what you did about it.Marc Bernstein First of all, I have to clarify, I'm a lawyer. I'm not about breaking law, but I am about changing the rules.Ray Loewe Like a KC Dempster line.KC Dempster Yeah. Well, I was married to a lawyer so I kind of know that stuff.Marc Bernstein Well, and it's also good as a financial planner not to be breaking any laws too. But changing the rules is a whole different story. So how it hit me...So like many of us, you know, all of a sudden I was I was actually visiting my son in Denver, knowing that travel might be restricted soon. It was May the 13th I think when I went out there, and on the way back, I realized that the whole world had changed in about four days. And that we were we were get ready to get shut down that the office was getting shut down. I got into my office once for about an hour before it got shut down. It's still closed. We're not opening my broker dealers not opening our office again until at least September. Wow, I have a feeling it could be longer. I have a feeling we won't be earliest we'll have clients in our office, which is how most of the way you build your business and it's the way I don't mind. People coming in the office. The earliest I think will be January to be honest.I've also just to describe that a little bit. I've been a frequent guest on internet. Television shows the last few weeks I have an agent and I've been on some shows. They picked me to speak on the dynamics of the changing commercial real estate landscape. And it is changing drastically. I mean, major companies are saying, you know, 80% of our clients are going to work from home now. I mean, so so that was the first thing that struck me, I've never worked from home. I never really used a computer very much, you know, for personal use. But, you know, I've always had staff that takes care of, you know, I work on my unique abilities, and those are bringing in business, working with clients doing the planning, and creating strategies and then helping them come to decisions to move forward. Those are the things I'm good at. I'm not good at working computers, I'm not good at, you know, staff, you know, managing staff, and those are not my greatest strengths. So, all of a sudden, I'm home and we got to figure out how to keep our employees motivated. We've got to figure out, I got to figure out how to use the thing that's sitting in front of me. Now I'm very advanced, you know, I'm standing up right now. I have have one of these desks that you can raise the level and I can, you know, I can, I figured out Skype today and figure it out. I'm a Zoom Meister, you know become really good at Zoom so so number one it's been a blessing because think of all the new technical capabilities I have that I didn't have before. So one of the things I realized, so my partners and myself decided that for the first month, we were going to do nothing but keep in touch with our top relationships and just see how they're doing. See if we can support them in any way because it's, you know, it's a really, really tough time for people. And that's what we did. The interesting thing is just by doing that business opportunities came our way number of business opportunities came our way without trying. The next thing I started thinking about was like, that's great, but how do I bring in new business because a certain percentage of our business each year is bringing in new business. Hello, we have a nice base of clients, but that's important as well. Well to bring in new business. So, like, how are we going to do that? So we've been starting to have all these zoom meetings with clients. But now it's a little different when you're, you know, when you're meeting someone for the first time and you're trying to connect on zoom, it's not quite the same thing as connecting with someone. Like I see you guys on my screen and it's easy because I've known you both for many years. So how do you do that? So I came up with this idea and Ray has been Ray and I have talked about and he's been a, you know, an influencer with me on this, that I'm developing a series of webinars right now titled Financial Leadership in Turbulent Times. And we're, um, that was I left my phone on that was Siri talking to me.So, we, um, and it's and it's really a series of ideas and exercises around. What is your vision now versus what it was three months ago? ago I had to go through this myself, or nothing I'm saying six months ago. So to go back to December of 2019. And now it's six months later, well, seven, almost seven months later, but june of 2016, what's changed and what shifted for you? A lot has shifted for me.I, you know, Ray knows my wife and I have talked about where we want to live, we're now our kids are isolated. They're living in different cities. And we're, you know, we're living in this big house by ourselves and say, We don't need this anymore. We just came from our Mountain House. Um, and we're, we decided to sell that and in fact, it's getting sold because we don't get up there enough. And we're thinking about different things we added on to our Vacation Club points because that's more relevant now. Where Where can we meet our kids and spend time together? So our lifestyles changing, things are changing.A lot of my business and and I think ultimately all for the better. But a lot so my my view of what I want really is changed. As Ray said I was traveling a lot I was intending to do more traveling more speaking. And I decided I don't really think I want to do that as much I I'd rather do what we're doing right now I'd like to do podcasts. I like to do more webinars I'd like to do. And I'd like and the other thing is I'm adding a team of people to bring in business, just kind of what I did for many years in my business. And I'm and just by thinking about it, I've had people come to me look from out of the blue that are that are interested in and that's their strength. So it's, you know, it's it's really it's almost, it's amazing in two months, how much has changed, and I think it's all going to be for the good.Ray Loewe You know, I'm looking forward, But I I'm looking forward to this this workshop that you're doing which I will be on and and I'm actually bringing a friend line with me. Okay. And it's probably going to turn out to be a new client relationship for you at some point in time. But, but the whole idea is, uh, I've had time to think, just like you have. And when you have time to think, you know, this is what we've never done before where everything was moved, move, move. I love the idea that you're rethinking where you want to live. So you actually now are spending time talking to your spouse? I mean, isn't that a good thing? Right? A lot of times. Yeah. And, and so it's intriguing, and it's exciting. So. So here you are, you've got hit with a change. you've figured out some creative ideas about what has to be done. What's your vision going forward? I mean, you kind of gave us a little piece of it here. But you said you're going to be off the road a little bit more than you were before.Marc Bernstein I think a lot more I what I decided is I love to travel. But I love to, you know, traveling isn't easy these days, you know, and it's it's only going to get tougher with what's going on now. So what I realized if you have to get somewhere for business, it's a lot of stress. But if you're going on vacation, I said this to my family a long time ago, we have delays if there's a flight delay, whatever happens once we've gotten in the car, we're on our way to the airport, that's our vacation. So if the planes late, it's like big deal, you know, or something happens big deal and it doesn't affect you. So I decided I do want to do more traveling but for pleasure, not for not so much for business anymore. You know, all these conferences I had like four or five conferences canceled between March and June. And be honest with you, I didn't miss any of them. thinking, you know, I'm thinking Am I gonna continue doing those in the future. We you know, the interesting thing is that way you feel is probably how your clients feel too, isn't it? Well, I'm starting to see that, you know, clients are very happy to connect on zoom, they don't have to drive to my office, we don't have to drive there. You know, it saves a lot of time. There's a lot of advantages to to what's coming out of this and the way we're operating. Sure, I want to be belly to belly with people from time to time, I want to see them, you know, get together because I care about them. And, you know, in those days are going to return we're going to be able to do that. But I think we've gotten in the habit. Now we could say to people, would you rather come into the office? Or would you rather do it on Zoo and a lot of like to keep things short? everybody's busy. So I think it's a lot easier to not make big events out of things and just do you know, technology's becoming a big aid and being more efficient with our time and which makes us better able to do the other things we want to do in our lives. So I think it's all great. I really do. Cool. All right. Well, unfortunately, we're getting near the end of our time, boy, time flies.Ray Loewe fast when we're done, you know, and again, before we close, I just want to remark, this is why you're one of the luckiest people in the world. And I really feel you are because you company, right? Well, you've taken the problem and you've turned it into a very positive thing and and not only are you revamping your life based on it in a positive way, but but I think the insights that you have as a financial advisor, follow through with this because our clients are thinking the same kind of thing. And now you're going to be able to put their plans together in a more exciting, more personal way than you ever were able to do that before. I'm looking forward to this workshop with you. I will be there and let's continue to do some exciting things. And KC, let's decide what we're going to do next week.KC Dempster Okay, well Next week we're going to be on the podcast again. At this point, I'm not sure if you've told me who our guest is going to be. I look forward to that. Because, secret Yeah, I love meeting these luckiest people. And I just want to remind everybody that the luckiest people in the world weren't born lucky. But they do live, exciting and fulfilling lives. And it's because they made the commitment to learn how to be lucky and they understand that you can't just make you know, make this commitment or do something once you It's a journey. So you constantly have to be reevaluating and looking at your life and figuring out what you need and what you want, and then finding out how to get there. And we have ways of helping people with that. So, you know, what do you think people should do to learn to be lucky and stay lucky?Ray Loewe Well, they ought to listen to our podcast because every week we have somebody like mark on and and all of the new podcasts going forward are going to feature people that I think are lucky People in the world. They have these mindsets. They're actually doing things that are creative and interesting and exciting in response to changes. In some cases, they're physically changing the rules, but never the law right mark. Never Never the law. And and we're getting excited for getting back in having our Friends Connection again. And that's one thing I don't want to not happen. A party is a party is a party. And when you're surrounded by a bunch of the luckiest people in the world, exciting things happen. And we've got some new books and courses coming out so So Mark, give us once more the final version. Your book that's out is called The Fiscal Therapy Solution. 1.0 available on Amazon.Marc Bernstein And I have a thought for you before we go. I have a personal trainer that we're training virtually now which is great. I don't have to drive anywhere. Zoom and yesterday he said yes. class because we have a class, but he manages to see everybody individually. And we have back and forth. And he said, is your day happening to you? Are you happening to your day? We have a good day, but you know, who's affecting whom there? Yeah. And proactive and not reactive every day now is, um, you know, is an adventure. And I think it's one of the lessons I've learned from this is make every day meaningful. You know, whatever it is your path, make sure that you're doing things to progress. I think human beings, we're gonna talk about this in the webinar, you know, are built to progress to move forward. If you don't move forward, you're moving backward. So how are you progressing every day in your journey, as you call out? Yeah.Ray Loewe Well, thanks for your wisdom as usual. And we'll be back next week with a new guest and a new topic. And join us, everybody. Thank you. We'll talk to you next week. Thank you for listening to changing the rules, a podcast design. To help you live your life the way you want, and give you what you need to make it happen.Diane Dayton Join us in two weeks for our next exciting topics on changing the rules with KC Dempster and Ray Loewe the luckiest guy in the world.

You need to give up control to allow co-creation to happen. Are you trying to force things to happen? Struggling to remain in control at all times and feeling like everything is continually out of grasp? We can actually control very little in our lives and that’s why we need to learn to let go. This episode of Both on Board is all about giving up control, meeting God halfway, and allowing things to happen. Highlights From Our Conversation [0:45] Creating vs. making things happen [3:10] Control something vs. allowing [7:45] Control leaves no room for joy [9:00] Always return to a place of joy [16:20] How do you identify where you’re at? [18:15] Learn to operate out of discernment [22:20] What are you attracting, choosing, and creating? You need to align instead of grind If you’re going out and grinding day-in and day-out and trying to will things into existence, you’re operating out of fear. You need to learn to see when you’re forcing things to happen instead of aligning with what is supposed to. The old adage is God’s delays are not God’s denials. But honestly, sometimes God’s delays ARE his denials. If you’re trying to force into existence something that isn’t meant to be, maybe God IS saying this isn’t for you. As entrepreneurs, we want to control everything. But the truth is we can only control how we react, and the decisions we make. Giving up control leaves room for joy Operating out of a place of controlling everything means you’re operating out of fear. Out of scarcity. When I was pregnant, I tried to control every little thing. I read books, I did research, I tried to manage everything I ate and did. I found myself constantly frustrated and was driving myself absolutely crazy. It was honestly hard on us both. I couldn’t control the pregnancy or how things would go. I was struggling and suffering. As Ray likes to put it, I had to shut-up and allow room for grace. I needed to start to focus on what felt good for me, not on what I think I needed to do. The better you feel, the better you show up—and I needed to show up for my baby. So I signed up for a course to teach Yoga. I did something that would bring me joy and started the process of beginning to let go. I wasn’t going to let my desire to control everything steal my joy. Set up “control” checkpoints So how do you begin to operate in a place of joy, instead of out of fear? We like to start the day off on a high—meditate, do yoga, etc. Do whatever it is that centers you and starts from a place of gratefulness. Then, you set up checkpoints for yourself throughout the day to reflect on your actions and reactions. Are you acting from a place of stress? Are you making excuses? Are you allowing external circumstances dictate how you feel? If you take a few moments a day to realign yourself you gain perspective. Perspective allows you to align with the co-creator and take aligned action. Do your part. Give 100% of what you have and allow the creator to meet you. Don’t force or dictate what you want to happen. Learn to operate from a place of discernment Giving up control doesn’t mean you make decisions hastily. But we believe you need to lead with your heart first, then your head. Your head is analytical and leads from a place of fear. Lead with your heart. Check-in with your “gut” feeling. Why do you feel the way you feel? Where is the feeling coming from? Address how you feel, talk about it, confront it, and then make decisions. Find the truth. Co-creating with each other, with God, and with the universe means making a plan—but don’t become attached to the outcome. Be humble and ask for help when necessary. But remember you don’t have to do it all. That’s not how things were meant to be. The power of two is inextricably more powerful than what someone can do alone. Having a partner in life and business makes life itself more fulfilling and fun. But how do you know you’re choosing the right friends? The right spouse or business partner? In this episode of Both on Board, Ray and I talk about some of the criteria we use to choose the people we surround ourselves with. Highlights From Our Conversation [0:50] The Power of Two [6:15] How do you choose the right people? [12:50] Do they act with integrity? [16:05] Give relationships time to develop [23:10] What does a good partnership look and feel like? [28:55] Choosing a partner is an art [33:50] Be strategic with relationships [38:10] Couples Cruise coming! It begins with value alignment One of the key things we look at when building relationships with potential friends, business partners, etc. is their value system. For the relationship to work in the long run, we need to align on core values and beliefs. Do they show genuine care for others? Do they give to charities? Do they have a commitment to personal growth? You can’t force someone to meet your values. It’s okay if they’re different. They don’t have to be mirror images of you—you want diversity. But you want to know they are people of integrity, who do what they say they will. The power of two begins with YOU I rely heavily on my intuition, or “gut feeling”. I’m good at listening and reading body language, whereas Ray is a “love at first sight” kind of guy. Ray instantly vibes with people and thinks they’re amazing. I take time to feel them out. I note if I have synergy with them or not. If it doesn’t feel good or it doesn’t feel easy it’s probably not the right thing to do. We are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to feeling people out. Ray and I balance each other out. I help him be more cautious, and he pushes me to be more open. We leverage the power of two. It takes time to build relationships Along with core value alignment and intuition, you need to factor in time. Is the other person’s behavior in alignment with what they say? Relationships/partnerships/friendships don’t get tested until stress is added. As Ray likes to say, how do they act when they get punched in the face? Don’t get attached to their personality until you know who they are. Sometimes your initial perception is not the reality. People deal with daily stressors and things that impact them—they aren’t always going to put their best face forward. It also depends on how you are showing up. If you aren’t showing up authentically, how can they expect you to? If you are clear on who you are and how you feel about yourself, you’ll attract the same kind of people. What does a good partnership look like? Ray and I are the first to admit that the right person makes all the difference. As you look at your core values, listen to your intuition, and give the relationship time it comes down to who do you want to be on board with? You don’t have to be the same, but you have to be on board with each other. A good partnership is about finding a way for both of you to show up authentically as your best selves and create magic. Your differences should melt away as you work in alignment. Other than personal development, the best way to invest your time is in relationships. You want to be strategic in your decisions and invest in partnerships where you give value to each other. When you choose wisely, the power of two will be more evident and fruitful. To hear how some of our best relationships and partnerships started, how we help balance each other out, and more—listen to the whole episode! Entrepreneurship development in marriage is possible when you’re both aligned and passionate about what you do. Are there struggles to overcome? Of course! But if you’re both on board, then you can work through the challenges and come out stronger. Ray and I love connecting with other married entrepreneurs and couples working together. In this episode of Both on Board, Ray and I were interviewed on the Multi-FAMILY Zone podcast, hosted by Julia and Gino Barbaro. Highlights From Our Conversation [0:45] The Multi-FAMILY Zone podcast [2:30] We finished 75Hard! [3:55] Why did Ray choose Real Estate? [26:20] Ongoing goals for the business [29:20] Tips for working together as a couple [38:00] Connect with us The 3 Laws of Ray We share a little bit of our personal journeys in this podcast. Part of Ray’s story is that he’s constantly reinventing himself, trying to find the path that is his right fit. I prefer to refer to it as ‘agility’. He has this unique ability to transition into something bigger and better seamlessly. Gino coined the “3 Laws of Ray”: Desperation: Ray was motivated because he was desperate for change, desperate for something more. He didn’t feel fulfilled at General Electric. It often is a strong motivator for people to make a change Inspiration: He found inspiration and dove into real estate. What is your inspiration for your business and future? Perspiration: Building a business and being an entrepreneur isn't easy. It takes hard work and perspiration! Do you have what it takes? Keep listening along to hear some insight from my journey from being a school-teacher to a full-time entrepreneur and mom! How to overcome your limiting beliefs When I was a teacher, I did my best to always be happy. I chose to enjoy my days in my job—though often difficult—and spent them smiling. My coworkers gave me the name “Sunshine”. But what I found is that other teachers found my happiness to be annoying, as if I shouldn’t be happy in my circumstances. Many teachers weren’t happy. But their limiting beliefs held power over them: “You just gotta suck it up and deal with it”. “It’s worth it because I have the summers off”. “I get to leave at 3 pm every day”. I’m of the mindset that if you’re going to teach, you need to be happy doing it. If you don’t want to teach, overcome the limiting beliefs that are keeping you trapped and find something better. If you don’t enjoy it, are you truly making an impact? Tried and true strategies for couples working together Our first and foremost tool that we reiterate time and time again is investing in personal development. We can’t know each other and how we mesh together if we don’t know ourselves first! Find out what you’re good at (and what you’re not) and learn to play off of each other’s strengths. Another mindset that we stand by is taking responsibility for yourself and your actions. You are responsible for your life and everything in it, including how you respond. Don’t play the blame game, stop being the victim, and believe that life is happening for you and serves you. This allows you to show up to your relationship and business at a much higher level! Lastly, support each other. Be in alignment with each other. Be compassionate. As Ray is learning the lending space, I am giving him the time and space he needs to grow in the new endeavor. But we are both enrolled in the vision and are each other’s biggest fan. Burn the ships and dive in When I left my teaching job, I didn’t request a leave of absence—I turned in my resignation. There was no life preserver. Gino pointed out that I burned the ships, and dove head-first into the entrepreneurial world with Ray. It certainly wasn’t easy, and the learning process was hard on us. Gino said it best when he said an entrepreneur is anyone who takes responsibility and someone who makes enough money to pay for their own mistakes. Through our marriage, the seasons of starting and ending businesses, and having our daughter we’ve hit bumps in the road. But you have to take a leap of faith to get to something better. You work through the challenges, the arguments, disagreements, and move forward in an aligned vision. There is no looking back, only pushing forward to something better. Wednesday 9th October 2019 Even though trade talks are still going ahead between the US and China this week, as Phil Dobbie discusses with NAB’s Ray Attrill, what little hope of any sort of outcome seems to be rapidly diminishing. For a start, the US has added 28 more tech companies to list that US suppliers can’t trade with, and it looks like US government retirement funds will be prevented from investing in China. There’s an equally as pessimistic outlook on Brexit, with talks falling apart. As Ray suggests, there’s the danger of a delay followed by a Tory election win, which could secure a no-deal Brexit further down the track. In short, don’t expect the pound to bounce back too much anytime soon.
Are you looking for a delightful weekend break? May the pod crew suggest Bruges for you and your loved ones. Straight out of a fairytale, Bruges will offer idyllic views of castles, romantic streets to lose yourself in and an array of dif-YOU'RE AN ANIMATE FUCKING OBJECT.Sorry. You’re obviously not. You’re a living, breathing, clever soul for choosing to join us in our weekend break in Bruges. Because aside from having some lovely alcoves, its the setting of Martin McDonaghs debut film, In Bruges. It follows hitmen Ray and Ken, who have to await orders from their boss in Bruges, after a jobs gone wrong. As Ray so aptly puts it; “I'm suicidal, me mate tries to kill me, me gun gets nicked and we're still in fucking Bruges.” This is just one of many quotable lines from this movie, which, we warn, get quoted a lot in this episode. We also apologise in advance for the jealously you will no doubt harbour in hearing our perfect impersonations of accents. We deep dive into McDonagh, from his career as a successful playwright before transitioning to film, going from strength to strength, having had his latest film Three Billboards nominated for 7 Oscars. We also talk about his Oscar winning short film, Six Shooter, which if you haven’t seen, is a much watch. Link here. We also have our short of the week, The Brain And You, written and directed by Paul Trillo. This one is a little political, so if that’s your thing, get involved. So come get lost in the alcoves, see the views from the tower and have yourself a NORMAL PODCAST FOR NORMAL PEOPLE. If you don't get that, it might be time to give In Bruges a re-watch. Happy listening.
During the Society of Toxicology (SOT) annual scientific meeting in March 2019, Legal Drugs Podcast's host, Angela Stoyanovitch, met today's special guest, Dr. Raymond Singer. After learning Ray's unique practice in forensic neuropsychology and neurotoxicology as an international and national testimony expert, Angela jumped on the opportunity to interview him inside the SOT booth. For nearly four decades, Ray has reported his findings around neurotoxicity (toxicity in the brain) as an expert witness including cases up to the United States Supreme Court. Ray's passion for justice and public health are evident in his life's work. As Ray explains his unique background and drive for public, legal, social and ethical responsibility, we may credit his work which gave rise to the establishment of toxicologists as expert witnesses in the judicial system. Ray has been leading the way ever since the day he stood up as a front liner on neurotoxicity associated with Agent Orange, an herbicide and defoliant chemical used during the Vietnam War (1961-1971.) Ray has studied human illnesses from neurotoxicants (a neurotoxicant is a substance capable of causing adverse effects in the central and peripheral nervous system as well as the sense organs) to bring more awareness to these types of illnesses. Whether known or unknown, any exposure or consumption of a substance such as a legal drug or environmental pollutant that results in a brain injury, for example, it is Ray's mission to shine a light on the objective truth so justice can be served. In episode four we talked all about your money mindset and how certain behaviors are ingrained in you since childhood. In this episode, we want to talk about what you do when you’ve got the money—how to have a fulfilling life. From talking about your money blueprint, where you place value in your life, to investing in giving, we’ve got you covered with this episode! Highlights From Our Conversation [0:55] The evolution of the money mindset [4:05] Don’t project your problems on your significant other [8:17] What are you drinking alcohol for—are you celebrating or escaping? [11:20] The art of fulfillment [17:35] What is stopping me from sitting in first class? [22:18] 5 regrets of the dying [23:39] Using the money muscle [28:00] We spend money investing in our joy [35:15] What are the things you can do to buy back your time? [42:50] Find out what is important to you and your spouse and make it happen [46:30] Go make more money! Finding abundance starts with taking action Achieving abundance truly starts with having a thought, which leads to a feeling, but starts with an action. We can create vision boards, daydream and visualize all we want but until we begin to take action, we won’t be moving in the direction of our dreams. And that’s what this podcast is all about right? We want to help you design the life you’ve been dreaming of! You’re out of alignment with the universe if you want something, but you aren’t doing anything to go out and get it. So we took action—even imperfect action will do—and we went out, worked hard, and found success. But we truly believe that success without fulfillment is wasted and is the ultimate failure. Listen to this episode as we address our journey to finding fulfillment. What first class flying taught me about life I was boarding a flight and forced to walk by all of these people in first class, and I found myself giving them the stink-eye. It was annoying to have to settle into my spot with the rest of economy class. I hated how I was responding in that moment. What they had was such a trigger for me! I wanted to be able to sit in first-class. I was projecting hatred on these people but the real issues was within me. With awareness of that fact, something hit me. What was keeping me from sitting in first class? Why couldn’t I have that? The jealousy became fuel for me to go and get what I wanted. To some, it seems like a waste of money because we are all going to the same place. But some of those seats are really comfy! The moral of the story is this: if you see someone that has something you want, bless them. Then go out and do what it takes for you to have it, too. Keep listening as we talk about abundance and finding clarity. Spend money investing in joy and a fulfilling life We like to interpret this a couple different ways. We spent a lot of time clarifying what we want, and flying first class is one of the things that we enjoy. As Ray likes to say, “They made these seats for somebody, might as well be me!” We invest in travel and adventure, experiences, and living where we want. Like we’ve said before, we are not living our life by anyone else’s expectations and standards. The truth is, what we choose to spend our money on can be completely different from you, and that’s okay. The second way we invest our money and time that brings us Joy is giving back. Ray and I truly believe that we are blessed, and therefore can live a life of blessing others. We need to make an impact, need to serve, and feel drawn to help other couples find abundance in their life. We are building a life that we don’t need a vacation from—so can you! Continue listening along as we talk about the ‘top regrets of the dying’, and other questions to really make you think. What are things you can do to buy back your time? Something we decided to do years ago was to start buying back our time by eliminating some of the things we don’t enjoy. Ray doesn’t like to drive, and would rather spend the time doing something else, so he takes Ubers everywhere. I don’t love cleaning our house, so for the last seven years we’ve paid someone $120 a week to do it. Then I invest my time elsewhere—doing yoga, spending time with our daughter, returning emails, etc. So what can you remove from the list of things you hate to free up time to do the things you love? As you already know, we love to invest our time and money into personal development. This year alone we’ve invested 6 figures. It’s always proven to be one of our best decisions. Listen to the rest of this episode as we cover “Money Dials: Why you spend the way you do” by Ramit Sethi. We’ll lay out for you the things we love to spend money on, why it’s worth it to us, and how it brings us fulfillment. In 1993, Ray Good AKA Sugeray was one of the world's top DJs. He then had a breakdown, learnt to meditate and started a seafood empire. Now he's on a mission to teach mindfulness and meditation to business owners everywhere. Ommmmmmmmmmm …. A little bit more about Ray Good ... The year was 1993. The Prodigy had just gone platinum, crop tops were cool and Ray Good was living the good life as one of the world's top 100 DJs, spinning decks at sold out rave in London, Tokyo and Berlin … organising large scale music events … he even owned a Australia's most respected import record store and his own record label. But then the good life came to an end. Ray was burning out and so were most of his mates. Eventually someone tapped him on the shoulder and suggested he try meditation. And from that point on he's never looked back. He launched a hugely successful sustainable seafood restaurant empire which he subsequently sold in order to focus 100% on his real passion … helping entrepreneurs and business owners find their Good Place via mediation. As Ray says, “the best guy to teach silence is the one who understands noise!” In this candid chat Ray shares: His business building strategies His coping strategies How he built Hooked into a mini-empire How and why we should all meditate Ray even takes us through a beautiful guided meditation “I don't do crystals, candles or sandals!.” - Ray Good, The Good Place Here's what caught my attention from my chat with Ray Good from The Good Place: Invest in yourself and start to meditate. Great names can be the start of a great business idea. Every touch point has to be branded. Ray Good Interview Transcription Tim I started off by asking Ray to describe his crazy life as a DJ. Ray Well pretty crazy yeah. As you just mentioned I made on the list of the world's top 100 DJs. But also at the same time, I was building up an empire. I was running large scale rave parties in Sydney and dance parties. I had weekly club nights going. I had my own import record store and record label as well. So this is quite an early age I guess this is the early 90s I was probably about 22 23. I'm living the dream and juggling a lot. It was inevitable I guess. I was going to burn out and it's also the first time I've really faced stress and anxiety in what I was doing. The Rants and Tangents crew is back again with another episode full of Rants and one big Tangent. As Ray and Shay managed the ship while Darrel tends to his obligations. We discuss the past weekend, New Zealand, the Don (Trump) and much more. Kick back and enjoy as we take you on the roller coaster that we call a conversation.
Perceptions of the past and future, in relation to marketing, are often conflicting. Some people dread the future and its inevitable robo-takeover, while clinging to oft-antiquated traditions. Others are gung-ho over the latest bells and whistles, trend-hopping from new thing to new thing. In this episode of Ponderings from the Perch, Priscilla talks with Ray Poynter about how we fit in the still-developing timeline of market research. As Ray says, there's room for both enthusiasm for the future and a retention of traditional values: "Probably my niche in the market is that I’m a very cynical lover of the new. So, yes, I do like new things, but I’m not easily swayed. I’ve got a very good grounding in the traditional aspects of applying the science; applying methodology and seeing where things fit. I’m much more interested in how they work than how shiny they are." Ray is the founder of NewMR, author of "The Handbook of Online and Social Media Research," and "The Handbook of Mobile Market Research," and the editor of ESOMAR's book "Answers to Contemporary Market Research Questions." He's also a prolific writer with 40 years of expertise in market research and innovation. Priscilla and Ray discuss changes in insights, legitimacy of new innovation, and what's on the horizon for the future of market research. Find Ray at NewMR, LinkedIn, or Twitter to read more of his insights. Don't forget to subscribe, rate and review Ponderings from the Perch on iTunes! This episode is sponsored by GreenBook. Has there ever been a greater trauma in life than when Felicity cut her hair on Ray Prim's favorite 90s TV show? DOUBTFUL #allcaps Ray was super open about sharing his thoughts and opinions on this episode. If you know him already, that won't surprise you. We talked about his otherworldly, soulful voice and how he's implemented it as a musician-turned-bandleader. Ray's been a prolific songwriter, and we can partially thank Depeche Mode for that. As Ray told us, seeing them live as a kid shifted his focus from football to music. Thanks, Depeche Mode! A great musician blended with a funny, good dude makes for a fantastic guest. We appreciate you, Ray! #bandcamp #mexicanchocolate
A humans of New York inspirational story, Ray — born and raised in Queens — has something profound to teach all of us: if you fail it shouldn’t be for lack of trying. Self made and tenacious as hell, listen and learn how Ray overcomes fear and self doubt in order to live out his dreams. From a restaurant and bar owner to construction and New York City real estate, Ray — by sheer grit — is now the Founder of Living the Dreams Films. With 7 feature length films in the last 2 years alone, Ray’s wholehearted passion for the entertainment industry has seen him work alongside the great talents of Amanda Seyfreid, Alec Baldwin, Johnny Depp, Adam Levine, Taylor Schilling and many others. His films have been met with critical acclaim and wide audiences spanning several genres. I wanted to interview "regular extraordinary people" for the show. People who have a story we can all relate to and a point a view that's both moving and meant to teach you something about life. Yes, this is life. Radical transparency here -- Ray slid into my DM's and asked to meet for coffee. I rarely say yes to these things but we agreed it might be professionally beneficial -- something about his profile intrigued me and I had a feeling we knew people in common. We met at the ACE hotel at 3 in the afternoon. He had a queens accent and a personal life story that took my breath away -- which you'll hear and see on the show (if you're watching this on Facebook Watch you'll witness how Ray and I both get emotional when he talks about sobriety, his daughter and what it was like to lose his former wife to cancer). I believe people are made up of energy and Ray had a seriously positive charge but not in a fake way. I wanted to know how he handled personal setbacks and why he decided, after starting and running a massively successful construction company, we made his way into the film world. His company Living the Dreams Film has now been in solved in producing I believe ten movies in just a few years. His story reminds us if we remain curious and tenacious anything is possible. As Ray says, "If I fail, it won't be for a lack of trying."
Detroit area musician “Razor Ray” has led an exciting life. Friends with Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell, playing for Kid Rock, a stint on MTV that involved a Satan puppet and an extremely intense, out-of-this-world near death experience while his life hung in the balance after a brain aneurysm. What did Ray see on the other side? Jump down the rabbit hole and go deep in this episode. As Ray said, “Mushrooms don’t compare.”
Why musician Ray Prim has a day job, and loves it! Ray Prim is a talented Austin based musician with a day job. He's widely seen as a performer with an onstage sense of humor, something he says he doesn't understand. I think I get his reputation. During the first 10 to 15 minutes of our conversation, he proclaimed his love for Taco Cabana tortillas and shouted at a Cortana enabled device. He's not trying to be funny, he just is. When I asked him about his reputation as an onstage funny guy, he says “I can't explain it. I say microphone, and they laugh.” He also says he once planned and told a joke on stage, and it bombed. In spite of this, Prim thinks he could write sketch comedy for SNL. Happy having a day job Ray's happy about having a day job. He sites living with band mates and playing shows you don't want to play as good reason to think about getting one. He puts his own situation in perspective for me by sharing a story from his touring days. His pivotal moment came when he received his first temp job paycheck. It was apparently considerably more than he'd grown accustomed to earning as a full time touring musician. He was about 28 at the time. Now in his forties, Ray reflects that the music business has a shelf life, such that the chances of “making it” diminish over time. He made his life change decision largely so that he could play gigs that he wanted to play, and so that he could write songs. He says there are lots of musicians in Austin with day jobs, and that the talent pool is big. His advice to musicians who struggle after a long career, “Go out there and find people with jobs that love to play.” “If anybody is digging you, you've accomplished something.” Today he turns down more gigs than he plays, while watching many of his full time musician friends struggle. He does shows so that he can pay musicians, and makes a point of not playing with full-time musicians. He says he can't afford them. The first thing he wants to know when recruiting musicians is if they have a day job. Living in Austin means being surrounded by talented people with day jobs. He adds, “There's always someone better… but there's enough ears out here for everyone. If anybody is digging you, you've accomplished something.” House concerts versus clubs On the day of our conversation, I happened to notice that Ray had done gigs for something called Tips Concerts, which is produced by a couple that lives in South Austin. They've build a sweet outdoor venue at their ranch home for hosting invitation-only concerts. Attendees pay ~$20 to attend the potluck events where artists perform hour long shows. Ray says it's a community thing, and that musicians are paid well. “House concerts is where it's at,” according to Ray. Fellow Austin musician Tom Meny turned him on to this particular gig. Ray goes on to talk about other house concert venues where he performs in San Antonio and Houston. They're typically booked well in advance and the venue hosts do all the marketing. In fact artists are discouraged from marketing the invitation only events. Ray enjoys these gigs so much, he wishes he had a home big enough to host house concerts. Featured Track Ray and I were introduced by Austin based singer Lara Price. The two met while doing backup vocal tracks for an artist known as Dr Joe. He says of Lara that he loved her voice the first time he heard her sing. “Lara is the cat's meow,” he added. I agree, and I'm thankful she introduced us. As Ray says, Lara's a talented and cool person. This episode's featured track is Find a Suit, which Ray says he wrote for a friend who was getting married at the time. The track compliments Ray's long list of breakup songs. Where does he find inspiration for such songs? Ray's addicted to TV. He says his life is boring, so his go-to muse is television drama. He tells me about a few of his favorites and closes with, “Don't get me started on Felicity–Oh I Love that girl.” He's not trying to be funny, he just is. Mama Mia! Here I Go Again! It’s Hedgehog Day, again. Hedgehog Day? You told me you would know what I meant if I said Hedgehog Day! This time loop is driving me crazy. I don’t know if I can keep doing this. Synopsis Zari remained on the Waverider while the rest of the team rescued a Waterloo recording from Napoleon. She takes full advantage of the Captain being away and in addition to performing maintenance, she uploads a program she designed to find a loophole in history that will save her brother. Unfortunately, it had a few unintended consequences, including frying Gideon’s cortex. When the team returns, they find out Zari has uploaded the program and Sara orders her to fix the ship. As Ray trips over his platforms (for the first of multiple times), Zari storms off to try and fix Gideon. During her repairs, she loosens a hose and a highly volatile substance that fuels the time drive sprays into her face. Moments later, the Waverider explodes. Zari finds herself exactly 1-hour earlier, just finishing her argument with Sara, again. Confused, she walks off to fix the ship, and the first of hundreds of time loops begins again. At first, she tries to involve Ray, explaining what is happening to her, but he gives her a sedative, several times in a row, before she develops and stumbles (literally) into Nate. When she explains the time loop, he tells her to find him the next time around and say “Groundhog Day.” Well, she gets there eventually (Hedgehog Day?) and the two are able to slowly investigate the entire team of the course of several one-hour loops in which Nate dies a number of different ways. Despite their efforts, they cannot stop the Waverider from exploding, but Zari learns a number of fascinating things about her team members. Nate and Amaya are flashing themselves to forget they keep having sex on every mission. Mick Rory is writing a sci-fi romance novel and (shockingly) it’s quite good! Ray spills the beans about the secret he’s been keeping since he saw Constantine off the Waverider. Sara is sneaking off to the jump ship for some peace, quiet and a conversation with Ava Sharpe. Having investigated the whole team and coming up short, Zari takes Nate’s advice and does “the fun montage” on her next several loops. Eventually, Zari can’t take it anymore and tries to shoot herself to end the time loop. Unfortunately, there are no bullets in the gun. A broken Zari brings the team up to speed and they form a plan to search the ship. At that exact moment, Mick tosses a beer bottle in the trash shoot and it comes flying back out. They head down to the trash compactor to investigate and discover… Gary! We think that Gary is the source of the time loop, but as it turns out, he is a literal plot device, trapped in a trash compactor just because it’s funny. (We see what you did there writer’s room.) Rory destroys the “chronorepeater” and the team has five minutes to find the bomb. Rory suggests they picked it up in Waterloo and they find the bomb in the one place Zari never looked: the Waterloo recording. They discuss how to diffuse it and Zari realizes there is only one thing she can do. She takes the bomb and locks herself in Sara’s office, hoping to shield the team from the worst of the blast so she can finally save them all. Just as the bomb should explode, everyone disappears and Gideon walks onto the bridge. We learn everything in this episode has been a simulation. Zari’s body is recovering in the med bay from her encounter with the mysterious time sludge and her consciousness has been in Gideon’s own version of the Matrix. She adapted her own program to force Zari to bond with the team. You see, the only way for her to save her brother and her home, she has to work with the Legends, but her fight with Sara would have led to her leaving the team. So Gidon stepped in and used Zari’s history hack to hack Zari. And it works! Zari explains everything to the team, who think she’s still being affected by the time sludge, but she shows them it really happened by telling each of them things only they could know about themselves. Sara and Zari bond over coffee, where she suggests Sara finally ask out Ava, and work out the loophole that will allow Zari to save her family. To close us out, Zari plays the violin as we see each team member gain closure. The episode ends with Rip tracking down Wally West in the Yunnan Province. He explains he needs Wally to save the universe. Extras The CW's Fall Schedule Jesse Quick joins the Legends! One thing I have run into, mostly working with personal brands, people like myself whos business is built around the person running the business, is the reluctance to offer content for free. Some people are worried about giving away too much. The thought there is that you might be giving away something you could have charged money for. The other concern is the work it takes to create content, and just give it away is wasted time. It is time you could have used to create something that would bring income. Both of those ideas are wrong. At least in my experience they are wrong. Not giving content away for free will likely have the exact opposite impact you expect it would if you are holding back so you can get paid for your work. Here are five reasons you should give away content for free; You have to give a lot of value before you ask someone to spend money with you. People can sample you before they buy you. You are playing the long game. As Ray said, over time people come to know, like, and trust you. You will have a bigger reach. If your reach were only people who bought from you, you would not be getting your message out to many people. Offering content for free allows you to discover what connects with people and why. All of five of those reasons funnel into something Ray Edwards told us, Serve First, Profit Later. Let me tell you one example I have seen of this in action. Sure, you may know some of the names Ray mentioned like Dan Miller, Michael Hyatt, or Jeff Goins. Maybe you don't know them, but in internet entrepreneurial world, they are well known. But this idea works with the little guys too. Take Todd Smith. I host the Agents in Action podcast with Todd Smith. Todd put out high-quality actionable content twice a month on the Agents in Action for many months before he ever asked the listeners to purchase anything from him. Finally, he put together some live workshops for Realtors in the Dallas area where he is from. Like most of us, Todd had a bit of fear his workshops would be a flop. But as entrepreneurs must do, Todd moved forward anyway. And what happened? His workshops sold out. Why did they sell out? Is it because Todd is a nice guy. No. Todd is a nice guy, but people didn't show up to give him a hug. Did his workshops sell out because he has 25 years experience as a high performing Realtor? No. That helped, but it is not why people paid money to attend his workshop. The workshops sold out because Todd had been giving away bonafide content on every episode of his podcast. People who listened to the podcast knew how good he was. They had a free sample and knew what he offered was worth paying for. The concept of giving stuff away for free does not just apply to Ray Edwards. It applies to you. And it applies to Todd Smith. And it applies to me, which is one of the reasons I do this show. So maybe the secret is out. I do this show so I can serve you. So you will know me and like me. And perhaps someday, you may want to learn more from me in a manner that goes beyond listen to me talk on a podcast. But if you don't, if you just enjoy hearing me talk, that is fine too. If you find value in this podcast, but never pay me a dollar for anything, that will still make me happy. That is how this works. You have to decide to give no matter what you get back. And how does this work for you if you are not a personal brand or a business driven by a personality? What if you are a physical store? The principle is the same. Find some extra way to give and serve. If you are a chiropractor, offer education in a newsletter, podcast, or a blog. A local example for me comes from one of the hardware stores; they put on classes teaching kids how to build stuff. The class and the materials didn't cost anything for the kids. And of course a parent came along with the kid, and when the time comes, it is the parent who is going to decide to shop at the hardware store and spend money because their kid learned to build a birdhouse there. My last word on this, if people find value in your free stuff, what impression will that leave for your paid content?
Welcome to the Autism Advantage podcast! I’m your host, Tom D’Eri, the COO and co-founder of Rising Tide Car Wash. In case you’re not familiar with what we do, we employ a fantastic team of individuals with autism, allowing us to empower our staff while offering a fantastic experience to customers. We believe that individuals with autism are an incredible untapped resource for many business, and this show is dedicated to proving that employing these people can create real competitive advantages. Ray Steffey, along with his son Joe, founded Poppin’ Joe’s Gourmet Kettle Korn. We’ve had the opportunity to share Ray’s story quite a bit in our Awakening the Autism Entrepreneur workshops, and the reason behind the company really resonates with the people who have come. As you’ll hear in this episode, the company’s story begins when Joe was in high school. Ray was told that Joe has no attention span, can’t say on task, would probably never hold a job, and would likely live in a group home for his whole life. When he heard this in April of 2000, Ray knew that he had to prove these predictions wrong. On a cruise to Alaska, he saw a booth with a constant line, and discovered it was selling kettle corn. He watched the process of making and selling the corn, and realized that the multiple tasks involved might be perfect for Joe. They bought used equipment, and on October 1, 2000 -- less than half a year after that fateful conversation at Joe’s school -- they had their first event. They sold several hundred dollars’ of kettle corn that first weekend, and have been developing their business ever since. Joe became the owner of the kettle corn business in April 2005. Since then, the business has grown so much that he’s selling over $70,000 in popcorn every year. In terms of daily functionality, Joe doesn’t like to repeat one task over and over. The other workers in the business know that Joe is the owner, so when he approaches the station where they’re working (such as the bagging station), their job is to go to the station he just came from (such as the mixing station). You’ll also learn in this episode how Joe is able to handle being at large venues with tens of thousands of people even though he doesn’t like being around more than a handful of people at a time, how the business is staying in the family across several generations, Ray’s advice to people who are considering starting a business, and much more! In This Episode: [00:58] - Ray talks about why he started Poppin’ Joe’s, sharing the story of the moment he knew that he had to prove people wrong and ensure Joe would have a productive, fulfilling life. [03:27] - We learn that diving into the business was fairly straightforward because the people who sold Ray the equipment already had dates for sales lined up, so they just had to call the venues and finish getting everything lined up. [04:46] - Ray talks about where the funding for Poppin’ Joe’s came from, and how successful the business is today. [06:32] - Going into the process, did Ray think the business would definitely succeed? Did he know that Joe would gravitate toward the work? As Ray answers, he shares some information on the practical details of how the business runs. [07:48] - Joe doesn’t like to be around a lot of people, and tends to disappear at family gatherings, for example. Ray talks about how this has played out when the business has been at a festival with thousands of people. [09:26] - Tom points out that Ray couldn’t have known for long that this was going to be the path for Joe, since he only discovered kettle corn during that trip to Alaska. At what point did Ray figure out that this was what they would do for Joe? [11:30] - We learn about how Ray helps Joe make the connection between the work he does and the positive things he gets to do with the money he earns. [12:17] - Joe is 30, and his parents are in their 70s. They put the word out that they’re looking for a co-owner for the business to ensure it moves forward once Ray and his wife aren’t able to be as actively involved, and now their oldest grandson has indicated interest. [13:50] - Tom shares his perspective on involving multiple generations in an autism-involved business, and making it endure. [13:38] - What would be Ray’s advice for people who are looking to start a business? [16:38] - Tom points out that what Ray is describing is a full and fulfilling life, and the ideal small business entrepreneur’s lifestyle. [17:50] - We hear Tom’s thoughts on Ray’s point about feeling like ordinary folks who decided to do something and ended up going on a great journey. [19:37] - How would Ray advise somebody who wants to figure out what their son or daughter with autism is interested in, with the goal of starting a business around it? [21:59] - Ray lists some ways that listeners can get involved with the business (other than buying their kettle corn!). As some of you may be aware, there’s a big election coming up. Yes, it’s time to pick a new auditor for Iowa City, Iowa, my hometown. It’s a hotly contested race between a jerk with a drinking problem and a twenty-four-year-old who ran a cake business into the ground. The pundits are having a field day. And then there’s the presidential race between McCain and Obama. That’s been in the news as well round these parts. It sort of reminds one of the race-that-almost-was between Richard Milhouse Nixon and RFK in 1968. Nixon wanted to give us “peace with honor” and RFK wanted us “out now.” With this parallel in mind we are happy to have Ray E. Boomhower on the show today. We’ll be talking about his fascinating book Robert F. Kennedy and the 1968 Indiana Primary (Indiana UP, 2008). It’s a very enlightening bit of scholarship. I was under the impression that RFK was somehow destined to run against Johnson in ’68. Not so! He came in only after Eugene McCarthy showed LBJ’s vulnerability to a strong anti-war message. RFK saw his chance, and took it. I was also under the impression that RFK would have doubtless won the Democratic nomination had he not been assassinated. Again, not so! McCarthy gave RFK a run for his money, and a very strong Humphrey was waiting in the wings. As Ray shows, RFK ran well in Indiana (and gave a speech on the day Martin Luther King was killed for which he is justly famous), but faltered elsewhere. Would RFK, had he been nominated, defeated Nixon? Nothing is sure in politics, as we in the United States are about to find out on November 4. Happy Election Day!
