In the earliest days of Suspense, Berry Kroeger introduced each week's story as the "Man in Black." Years later, this talented and versatile actor would step into starring roles on "radio's outstanding theatre of thrills." We'll hear him in an adaptation of W.F. Harvey's "August Heat" (originally aired on CBS on March 20, 1948) and as a would-be murderer who develops unusual mental powers in "It's All In Your Mind" (AFRS rebroadcast from July 20, 1958). Plus we'll hear more of his radio performances that show off his range - as a killer in "Eight Steps to Murder" from Inner Sanctum (originally aired on CBS on June 4, 1946) and as a spy on a daring mission in "Confidential Agent" from Escape (originally aired on CBS on April 2, 1949).

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2024 19:13

It is often referred to as a ghost story (it appears in The Folio Society's Book of Ghost Stories, for example, and in Edward Gorey's ghost story collection The Haunted Looking Glass) even though no ghosts are featured. In this episode we bring you two short stories of macabre horror and madness. In our first tale, “August Heat” by W.F. Harvey, we find an artist in a fit of creative inspiration drawing a man he has never seen before but feels compelled to keep the illustration by him while he wanders in a daze through the oppressive August heat. Stumbling into the yard of a marble worker, he is shocked to find the man he drew finishing a tombstone with his name on it. Both men fumble through an awkward evening together as the heat draws them closer together to see if they will both make it through midnight. Our second story, “The Adventures of the German Student” by Washington Irving, is a tale of a melancholic recluse student who upon a walk through a rainy night in revolutionary Paris finds a young woman who has been haunting his dreams. Bringing her back to his room to take shelter from the storm, they declare their unusual passions for one another. But upon the morning, our student returns to discover the dreadful secret of the mysterious woman. August Heat W F Harvey was a Yorkshireman, born in 1885 and died in 1937. He was a Quaker and suffered from ill health all his life. He joined an ambulance unit in the First World War but then went to work as a surgeon-lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He actually won a medal for saving lives but suffered from lung trouble the rest of his life from that rescue, though that didn’t stop him smoking a pipe. He published his first collection of short stories called The Midnight House in 1910 and his second in 1928 called The Beast with Five Fingers. The Beast With Five Fingers is a splendid story was was made into a film in 1946 starring Peter Lorre. I remember watching it at home with my parents and being really creeped out. The next time I watched it as an adult, I realised it was a comedy. This is a short piece of fiction. We’d almost call it Flash Fiction these days. August Heat is strong in its depiction of atmosphere of the hot August weather. The weird coincidence of the two men encapsulating each other in their own particular forms of art is strange. These days, it isn’t really unnerving. And the long established trope of leaving the reader to wonder whether he will actually die that night before midnight - and he’s got less than an hour left, is fun, but wouldn’t satisfy the modern reader. I’ve tried it and you get one starred into oblivion if you try that kind of trick on Amazon. With his leading man looks and his mellifluous voice, Ronald Colman was a star of both the silent and talking eras of Hollywood. His appearances on radio gave the Oscar winner a chance to put that voice to good use, whether he and his wife Benita Hume were clowning around with Jack Benny or whether Colman was making one of his six visits to Suspense. We’ll hear him in “August Heat” (originally aired on May 31, 1945) and “A Vision of Death” (originally aired on March 8, 1951).

This week on Biff's Mystery Theatre I'm bringing you 3 more tales from one of my favourite shows, Suspense. First up is the story from Agatha Christie called The ABC Murders. A killer is riding the rails around the outskirts of London killing. Next is a classic that has been adapted a thousand times over entitled The Most Dangerous Game where a hunt is under way and man is the prey. We end this week with August Heat about how the hot weather can effect peoples behaviour in strange and peculiar ways. If you are enjoying these and wish to find more stories on your own, I encourage you to visit https://archive.org/ and search OTR or Old Time Radio. THE HALLMARK PLAYHOUSE was heard over CBS stations Thursday evenings. This drama anthology of 30-minute shows was sponsored by, of course, Hallmark Greeting Cards. It was preceded by the RADIO READER'S DIGEST, which ran from September 13, 1942 thorugh June 3, 1948. Hallmark sponsored the RADIO READER'S DIGEST from January 13, 1946 to it's end. On Feb. 8, 1953, the series name and format was changed. It was now called THE HALLMARK HALL OF FAME and presented biographal sketches of famous persons, past and present. The new format was used until the end of the 1955 season. The exception to the new format was the broadcast each Christmas season of "A Christmas Carol". Like other dramatic series of this time, this one made use of major screen actors in the productions. James Hilton, author of "Random Harvest", "Lost Horizon" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" plus others, served as host and Narrator. Dee Engelbach produced and directed the shows. Jean Holloway was the writer. Sound Effects were by Harry Essman and Gene Twombly. Musical conductor was Lyn Murray. The show's theme was "Dream of Olwne" by Charles Williams.THIS EPISODE:September 29, 1949. CBS network, KMBC, Kansas City Missouri aircheck. "August Heat". Sponsored by: Hallmark Cards. An eerie story about an artist caught in a New York heatwave, and a tombstone with his name cut into it. The script was also used on "Suspense" on May 3, 1945, and on "Sleep No More" on November 28, 1956. James Hilton (host), Frank Goss (announcer), Fred MacMurray, Ed Begley, W. F. Harvey (writer). 29:32.
