Martin Whiteley is someone who likes to work behind the scenes, however, many of you will know his name. From the mid-80s onwards, Martin has been involved with the growth of mountain biking, and through his time as CEO of Australian Cycling, working at the UCI and running some of the biggest downhill race teams in history, Martin has played a role in shaping our sport into what it is today. With all this history, it's hard to pick and choose what to cover, so this episode is pretty long and I've split it into two parts. Part one covers Martin's background and his time at the UCI. We hear about his work with Global Racing, G-Cross Honda, Trek World Racing and the YT Mob, and get his thoughts on talent development. Part two will be dropping tomorrow, where we'll talk about Red Bull, the Discovery takeover, athlete management and plenty more. For now, here's part one. Today Faith and Val pay homage to Iris Dixon, a champion of Australian cycling and a cracking story teller. Iris Dixon passed away at the end of last week, aged 91. Iris was an incredible cyclist, Australian Cycling Hall of fame inductee and sixteen time national champion. She dissed our bikes when she was our studio guest in 2013. You can read more about Iris in Monique Hanley's article A ride through history with Australian cycling legend Iris Dixon. One thing that struck us was how much Iris would have enjoyed the inaugral Tour de France Femme which kicked off this weekend. We also discuss the changes to the No Left Turn for motorists at the cnr of Victoria Parade and Brunswick street and increasing cycnicism amongst people who use bicycles to get around about State government commitments to active transport.
Our Great Coach on this episode is Simon Jones. Simon is a cycling coach who started working with British cycling in the mid 1990's. In 1998 he was appointed the British National Track Endurance Coach and then in 2003 he was promoted to the Head Coach role of British Cycling. During this period he coached Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish. And in 2004, 2005 and 2007 the team came top of the medal tally at the Track Cycling World Championships. In 2007 he moved to the Western Australian Institute of Sport in coaching roles for racing sports. This then led him to a coaching and innovation role with Team Sky under Sir David Brailsford in 2014, and 2 victories in the Tour De France, in 2015 and 2016. And from there to the top role at Australian Cycling as the Performance Director from 2017 to 2021. Simon puts athletes at the very centre of his coaching approach. He believes that attention to detail and a focus on, in his words, planning not the plan, help the cyclist unlock their potential and adjust accordingly in a complex world. He believes in the human ability to synthesize information, summarize, find patterns and adjust and in this this interview, recorded before the Tokyo Olympic Games, you will hear him talk about: His description of working with Sir David Brailsford at team sky, and how they applied a focus on marginal gains to win the tour de France. How on race day you have to be mindful of not having a negative impact as a coach, and so you need to stand back and give the athlete space. And his view that legacy is for your ego, and so he doesn't focus on it, but instead tries to just do his job and enjoy the role. This was an enjoyable interview with a coach who believes in empowerment and I hope you enjoy it as much as Jim and I did. Margaret's response: “You know what you get from nothing, nothing”, says so much about her practical approach to life and sport. She's very wise, our Margaret!Margaret and I actually met at a fun run in Canberra. We connected immediately, and spent the next seven or so years training most days together, solving the world's problems as we clocked up some running kilometres on the fire trails.
