Meet Alison Tetrick: cowgirl, scientist, storyteller, and pro cyclist. She's a force to be reckoned with, and her journey is nothing short of inspiring. Growing up on a remote cattle ranch in California, Alison pursued excellence in academics and solo sports. She earned a biochemistry degree and became a published scientific author before pursuing a career in drug discovery. But her true passion lay in cycling. Alison was a talented triathlete, but it wasn't until her grandfather convinced her to race bicycles exclusively that she truly found her calling. She quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the best elite women cyclists in the world, placing 3rd at the UCI World Championships and winning stages at major events. However, her career was cut short by a sequence of devastating crashes that left her with a traumatic brain injury, broken bones, and months of rehabilitation. But Alison refused to let this stop her from pursuing her passion. She found a new sense of freedom on the bike in the gravel scene, becoming a 3x Gravel Worlds Champion and the inaugural "Queen of Gravel." Ali and I sync up to talk about where her career in cycling began, our mutual passion for riding horses, when she switched gears to gravel, what she loves about the sport, and so much more. As if that wasn't impressive enough, Alison also acquired a master's in clinical psychology while racing professionally and working in biotech. She now serves on the Board of Directors of USA Cycling and runs a consulting firm focused on community engagement and brand activation. With a mission to promote inclusivity and opportunity for student-athletes, Alison is making a direct social impact in her community. Alison Tetrick is proof that the power of the bike can be amplified through education and community impact. Her unwavering determination and passion for cycling make her a true inspiration to us all CONNECT Ali Tetrick on Instagram Marni On The Move Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, or YouTube Marni Salup on Instagram and Spotify SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER Sign up for our weekly newsletter, The Download, for Marni on the Move updates, exclusive offers, invites to events, and exciting news! We're still in Glasgow, and this is the big one, the Queen Stage of the Tour d'Écosse with seven current Scottish Football League grounds on the route, plus a couple of wild cards. Lionel and Simon drop in on Cathkin Park, the so-called ‘ghost ground' and former home to the long defunct Third Lanark club. There are stops at Hampden Park, home of the Tartan Army, Parkhead – or Paradise to give it another name – Cumbernauld and Airdrie, the club with two second names Albion Rovers, Hamilton Academical and Motherwell. We also explore the sectarian divide which splits the city with Kenny Pryde. The eyes of the cycling world will be on Glasgow, and other parts of the country as Scotland takes centre stage in August 2023 as hosts of the UCI World Championships. The first ‘Super Worlds' as Lionel calls it, will see 190 rainbow jerseys awarded across multiple cycling disciplines. But what will the World Championships mean for the future of Scottish Cycling? We hear from Jimmy McCallum and Peter Ellen of The Cycling Academy about the work to create the champions of tomorrow. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Supersapiens and Science in Sport. Caleb Swartz, while only just 23 years old now, has been a part of the national cycling scene for more than a decade, traveling the country and world, with his family, In 2021 he ventured off on his own, creating his own program as a privateer, giving him the freedom to race mountain bikes, gravel and cross across North America, and jump over to Europe when it was beneficial. His efforts were rewarded as he was named to the U.S. National Team, the youngest American taking the line at the UCI World Championships in Fayetteville, AR. In Episode #33, I sit down with former UCI World Cup XC rider Willow Koerber-Rockwell. If you just entered the sport of mountain biking within the past 5 years you may ask yourself who is Willow Koerber-Rockwell? Well, she was one of the top XC riders for the Subaru Gary Fisher Team that then turned into Subaru Trek Factory Team. Willow finished 3rd in the 2009 and 2010 UCI World Championships and was 2nd OVERALL in the 2010 UCI XCO Series. She was also the FIRST female to reach the podium at a world cup, riding a 29er mountain bike. Remember, at that time in the sport of mountain biking, 29er's were still consider the ugly step child that no one wanted to invite to the party. I for one, thank Willow for kicking in the door and bringing the "wagon wheel" outcast to the party. Following the 2010 season she took off to have her first child. In 2012 she came back to the world stage, but her priorities had changed and she couldn't fully commit to being both a mother and a pro mountain biker, so Willow walked away from the sport. She now lives in Colorado with her husband, Myles Rockwell (former UCI World DH Champion) and her two daughters. This week we talk to Mandy Marquardt! A Little About Mandy: Mandy learned to love riding a bicycle at the age of 10 at the Brian Piccolo Velodrome near her home in south Florida. A little less than a year later, Mandy won three medals in cycling, including two gold medals (criterium and time trial) at the 2003 U.S. Junior Women's 10-12 Road National Championships. Early in high school she moved back to Germany to live with her father, continuing to compete in many endurance road and track cycling events. It was during this time she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. After completing her senior year of high school in Florida, she balanced studies and cycling at Penn State Lehigh Valley. It was during college in 2012, at age 21, that she moved her cycling focus to the track and sprint disciplines. Mandy resides in Allentown, PA and is currently a full-time professional cyclist for Team Novo Nordisk, the world's first all-diabetes professional cycling team. As part of the USA Cycling National Team, she has raced internationally at the Pan-American Championships, UCI World Cups, and UCI World Championships. A 22-time U.S. National Champion, Mandy currently holds three U.S National Records in the Women's Standing 500m TT, 1km TT and the Team Sprint. Mandy graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 2014, and is currently pursuing her MBA with Penn State's Smeal College of Business. She is an active ambassador for many organizations, including TrueSport, The Taylor Hooton Foundation, and the St. Luke's University Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania . Alison Tetrick is a cowgirl, a scientist, a storyteller, and a professional cyclist. Growing up on a cattle ranch in California, Alison could dream as big as the boundless landscape. Being remote from the surrounding communities, she pursued excellence in her academics, solo sports, and was ingrained with a ranch life work ethic. Beginning tennis in high school, she used that and her Valedictorian status to earn a full scholarship to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX. She excelled in pursuing a B.S in Biochemistry with an emphasis in Molecular Biology and became a published scientific author in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Biochemistry for her research in cholesterol biosynthesis. Alison's scientific experience took her from Texas to Boston where she worked in a laboratory specializing in chemistry research and drug discovery and then on to the Bay Area where she currently resides in Petaluma, CA. Always seeking physical challenges to accentuate her professional career in biotechnology, she began triathlon winning her first races and qualifying for the 70.3 World Championships. Meanwhile, her Grandfather had become an avid cyclist in the later years of his life winning 17 USA Master's National Championships and remarked that his granddaughter had the potential in the sport in which he could have unlocked decades earlier. Cycling was in her blood. Despite the foray into triathlon, true riding to Alison still meant saddling up her horse to ride the trails of the Central Coast of California and it took some convincing from Grampy to race bicycles exclusively. A 6-month period that consisted of a few races, a call from the USA Cycling Talent ID, and joining the USA National Team, capitulated Alison into a career that both not almost ended her life, but also saved her life. Finding the same sense of freedom on a bike that she had found with the wide-open spaces of the ranch, she uncovered what she needed to progress into one of the best elite women cyclists in the world. In 2014, she placed 3rd at the UCI World Championships in the Team Time Trial and won stages at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina and the BeNe Tour in Belgium. She represented the USA at the Pan American Games. She was ranked by the UCI, the global governing body for professional cycling, in the Top 10 professional racers in the world. This successful career came hurtling down as a sequence of crashes that involved life flight helicopters, a traumatic brain injury (TBI), broken bones, hospital stays, months of rehabilitation, and side effects from the crashes that remain to this day led her to explore alternate outlets on the bike. From the UCI World Tour, she began exploring all things gravel. She won her first gravel race at DK200, setting the current course record, and continued to become 3x Gravel Worlds Champion. In due course, Alison was crowned by event coordinators and the gravel community as the inaugural “Queen of Gravel”. The TBI resulting from the crashes as a professional cyclist awakened her academic pursuits in the desire to understand the healing process of the brain. While continuing to race professionally and work as a consultant in biotechnology communications, she acquired her M.S. in Clinical Psychology. Alison is dedicated to investing in the sport of cycling and serves on the Board of Directors of USA Cycling. You can find her all over the world enjoying life, riding bikes and inspiring. She maintains a career as a communications professional, specializing in biotechnology and the endurance sports industry. She was a pivotal part in the activation of the Amgen Tour of California, with her science, marketing, and cycling expertise. She is also the co-founder and CEO of Saga Ventures, LLC, a consulting firm based on curating meaningful community engagement and brand activation. Be bold. Do work. Ride bikes.

Brad is joined by Graham Willgoss and Brian Smith to dissect the first stage of the Giro d'Italia, with the trio concluding that Ineos Grenadiers look a team transformed following their struggles at the Tour de France. Filippo Ganna looked almost unbeatable, says Brad, as he took the spoils on a 15.1-km individual time trial while Geraint Thomas put time into his rivals on an excellent first stage of the Giro for the British-based team. Both Wiggins and Smith say Thomas - backed up by what they call a brilliant, well-balanced team - looks the outright favourite for the Maglia Rosa. There is also a look back at the UCI World Championships, and how some riders used the Tour as a tune-up event for the rainbow jersey battle. Brad ponders whether the Great Britain set up needs a shake up after questions are raised over the tactics that led to Lizzie Deignan's sixth-place finish. Elsewhere, Mathieu van der Poel's exploits at the BinckBank Tour could see him miss Sunday's Liege Bastogne Liege, with Brad asking whether cycling expects too much of the Dutch superstar after his long-range attack on Saturday. The pod closes with Brad, Brian and Graham lamenting the behaviour of Quinn Simmons who was suspended by Trek-Segafredo last week for what the team called ‘divisive and incendiary' statements on social media. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton. 1999 had its highs and lows. For every No Scrubs by TLC there was a Mambo Number 5 or virtually anything from the Backstreet Boys' back catalogue. Bluetooth came about, we all played Snake on our Nokia 3210s, and a Texan shocked the world by winning the Tour de France. Whatever happened to him? But when it came to professional cycling, maybe the best thing about the sport was just how inaccessible it was. If you wanted to keep up with European racing, your options were either the four lines of text posted on Ceefax, loading up Cyclingnews on your parents' dodgy modem, or waiting a week for your favourite cycling magazine to hit the shelves. However you managed to follow cycling back then, the fact that you had work for it only added to the romance. And the final UCI World Championships of the 1990s were arguably the most romantic and beautiful of the entire decade. The setting was perfect, the line-up stellar, even the race-winning break was filled with a mouthwatering array of talent. And, to top it all, we had a shock winner. This is the story of Oscar Friere's 1999 Worlds win and how a complete unknown stormed to victory in one of the biggest upsets the sport had ever seen. Join us as we re-tell the race on its 20th anniversary, and head to meet with Friere at his home in Northern Spain.
