The Santos Tour Down Under is Australia's greatest cycling race, a 10 day event which is centred around a men's and women's UCI WorldTour and UCI Women's WorldTour race. This is the highest level of elite cycling, and the stage race around Adelaide and its surrounding region opens the 2024 season. The event takes place from 12 – 21 January with a total of 36 teams, and 240 riders combined.This edition of the Santos Tour Down Under is the second for Race Director Stuart O'Grady, who is a former winner of the race, and Assistant Race Directors Annette Edmondson and Carlee Taylor.Women's Race:Last year the women's race was held at UCI Women's WorldTour status after being elevated by the UCI.In 2024 the women's race returned to being held across a weekend. Following record crowds at the Santos Tour Down Under women's stages last year, fans had even more opportunities to get out and see elite riders in action. It also featured the longest women's UCI WorldTour race at Santos Tour Down Under during Health Partners Women's Stage 2.The 2024 event featured the largest women's peloton with 16 teams and nine UCI Women's WorldTour teams, with three stages and approximately 311 kilometres of action. Racing concluded on the iconic Willunga Hill for the first time in the women's race and crowned its latest champion on Sunday 14 January.Economic Benefit:The 2023 Santos Tour Down Under injected $66.5 million into our state's economy, it reached 2.7 million Australians, and the broadcast was shown in 190 international territories. Etapa con llegada en alto muy dura hoy, y un grupo de escapados muy fuerte que consiguió llegar a la última subida para disputarse entre ellos la victoria de etapa. El australiano Jay Vine, ya ganador de la primera etapa de montaña repitió victoria mostrándose el más fuerte con diferencia contra sus compañeros de fuga. Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Strava, the social networking app that tracks physical activity, has become a phenomenon in the cycling world, with ‘taking Segments‘ and ‘giving Kudos‘ becoming part of everyday cycling chat. Strava was something that I completely ignored as a professional. It didn't exist when I was a young rider, and as I already uploaded my training for my coach and my team, and I raced people for a living, I just wasn't interested in another way to be competitive or to measure my work. This all changed when I retired, and I've found myself not only pretty active on Stravabut also really interested in how people use it. For this episode, I thought I'd try to break right down what Strava is, how it works, how people use it and why. I wanted to understand it better and I also find out what the guys in the pro peloton currently think about it. I started with my old mate Mark O'Brien who, post-career, has become a self-confessed ‘KOM hunter' in Melbourne. Mark is also a coach and was great at breaking down the nuts and bolts of how it all works and why so many people enjoy using it. I also spoke to two current professional cyclists, who I thought would have interesting point of views on Strava. The first was Jay Vine. To me, Jay seems like a poster boy for the Strava generation. Even before he was a pro Jay had a reputation built on taking some pretty famous KOMs around Girona, and as he admits himself he has never known cycling without Strava being a part of it. Jay spoke about how he used Strava to help his career, how he now thinks about some of his famous KOMs and his current use of Strava in training. For a different take, I also spoke to George Bennett. George has been a pro for twelve years, and he really comes from the old school of bike racing. He also, like myself, always considered race results to be the ‘real' measure of ability and not just a time on an online leaderboard. But even George, it turns out, is a fan of Strava. I picked his brains about what he likes about it and what benefits he sees from using it alongside his training and life as a pro. I enjoy using Strava these days and I know a lot of cyclists of all abilities do too. I found it fascinating to open my eyes up a bit more about it, and I hope you guys all get something from it too! The rise of esports has been the most important change we've seen in bike racing in the last 20 years. Zwift and similar platforms have begun a revolution, not just in how racing happens, but in who can compete. Zwift is open to anyone, from anywhere. It's the very opposite of professional road racing in terms of accessibility and expense. From a performance point of view, Zwift means that any of us can race against the best, and it means that talented riders from outside mainstream pro cycling can get themselves noticed. In this edition of Faster, I talk to two of the world's most successful Zwifters. Aussie Jay Vine is the current UCI Esports World Champion, and also races on the road at the highest level. Riding for the Alpecin Deceuninck team, he's been second in the Tour of Norway, and was unlucky not to take a stage of the 2020 Vuelta a Espana. We look at how racing online in and in real life can benefit each other, and how he's used them together to get the best out of himself. In contrast with Jay's twin-track career, Kristen Kulchinsky from the US is a full-on esports specialist. She has been the top-ranked Zwift woman for much of the last couple of years, and while she's dominant online, she barely rides in the real world at all, even in training. No one knows more about the physical and mental demands of this very pure form of bike racing. And coach and former pro-racer Dan Fleeman tells me about the Zwift Academy, a talent search programme that finds some of the best esports riders (including Jay Vine himself) contracts with top pro road teams. Remco Evenepoel won Tour of Norway stage 3 mountain top finishing, producing 6,50 w/kg for 30+ minutes, which is the best climbing performance of 2022. Remco beat Jay Vine by 27 seconds, who also did a great performance. In Top 10 also finished Luke Plapp, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Laurens Huys, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Esteban Chaves, Marco Brenner, Magnus Sheffield and Tao Geoghegan Hart.
