This week on the pod, It's Dave's Birthday! We celebrate by drinking and discussing “All About Eve.” The random year generator spun 1950, so we'll give you some context of what was happening in the film year and world events before our featured conversation, Joseph Mankiewicz's masterpiece starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. We open the episode with Dave's mini-review of “Kraven the Hunter”, discussing the state of movie studios, and a fun voicemail from some podcast friends. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Join hosts Jason Christian, Anthony Ballas, and Tim Jones as they discuss Irving Pichel's 1950 crime thriller Quicksand, starring Mickey Rooney, Peter Lorre, Jeanne Cagney, and Barbara Bates. The film's plot revolves around Rooney's character making one bad decision after another, shattering his moral compass along the way. The implicit message, heavy-handed in its delivery, is that poverty breeds crime. Pichel was one of the so-called "unfriendly nineteen" brought before HUAC hearings in 1947. That group was whittled down to ten and later dubbed the Hollywood Ten. Pichel was blacklisted along with the others who refused to testify. EPISODE 33 - “Zachary Scott: Star of the Month (May)” - 04/29/2024 Suave, debonaire, and effortlessly charming, ZACHARY SCOTT is best known for his role in MICHAEL CURTIZ's film noir classic Mildred Pierce (1945). As the duplicitous, silver-tongued charmer Monte Beragon, he romances Mildred, played by JOAN CRAWFORD (in her Oscar-winning role), and Mildred's daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH). This became Scott's signature role: the sexy cad who was usually at his best swindling, seducing, or being a general scoundrel. It was always fun watching Scott's dastardly ways unfold. He could rock a tux, looked naked without a martini in his hand, and always had a cigarette close by. He was so magnetic that he could even make film-goers feel sorry for him. While he seldom got to play the good guy, when he did, as in what is perhaps one of his best roles in JEAN RENOIR's The Southerner (1945), you realize the versatility that he seldom had the opportunity to display. With a career that included over 40 films and dozens of television roles, ZACHARY SCOTT is our Star of the Month. When Adrian Talbot tells us that he parachuted into Thames Television in the early 1990s, the image of the London skyline—once used to brand Thames Television—quickly comes to mind. Suddenly, in our mind’s eye, just to the right of St. Paul’s dome, we spy a 20-something-year-old Talbot floating confidently downward. Along with a boatload of first-class metaphors, this is the type of instant imaging that every conversation renders—at least for those of us on the lookout for them. But Talbot’s successful first jump—not unlike those of many future finance leaders—came about with a degree of serendipity. “The lead auditor became sick—I was parachuted in for 2 years, and this gave me an early taste of media,” explains Talbot, who at the time was an auditor for BDO. Several internal auditing roles followed, including one with Hilton International that required a good deal of travel in order to complete audits in different parts of the world. “When you have chased the financial controller for the Caracas Hilton around the airport with a sheet of accruals or when the general manager of the Nairobi Hilton is yelling at you for telling him that he made a mess of a capex project, it is rather character-building,” comments Talbot, who soon jumped back into the media realm with United Business Media, where he would serve as a finance director for the company’s television broadcasting properties before entering the global communications sphere as a finance director for Burson Marsteller. Talbot reports that years later, when he was recruited to be CFO of Hotwire, a fast-growing global communications firm, he found a unique match—not because of his years inside media and communications but because of Hotwire’s global CEO, Barbara Bates. Bates had sold a communications company that she had spent 25 years building to Hotwire in 2016 and gone on to be named Hotwire’s Global CEO. “I was able to help her with my experience around the globe, and she was able to help me with her experience inside the USA,” says Talbot, who today credits Bates with helping him to safely land inside a finance leadership opportunity. - Jack Sweeney
Join your host Hermene Hartman for this special report , 5- part Zoom series, Covid While Black in partnership with Robert R. McCormick Foundation. We'll be discussing mental health, talking to survivors of the corona virus, in addition to featuring black doctors & nurses, black entrepreneurs, and the much ignored last responders/deathcare workers- funeral directors. In this episode your host Hermene Hartman speaks with Fashion Designer Barbara Bates , Dionne Williams of D.Williams Public Relations and Event Management Group , Owner and Executive Chef Erick Williams at Virtue Restaurant & Bar , Noelle Diprizio VP & Co-founder of Chicago Distilling Company, and Annah Mitchell owner of Gobble Doggs , to discuss how their businesses have survived during this pandemic. Erick Wiiliams had a decrease in business of 75%. The concerns around the new business processeses for his restaurant were overwhelming. His initial thoughts were to insure that his team was in a position to sustain themeselves vs. implementing furloughs as other restaurants have done. Virtue quickly moved to "take out" soley to create a revenue stream and strong nest egg for the team. Barbara Bates received a call from two friends suggesting that she shift to making masks for first responsders. Her first run of 500 masks were dontaed to Mt.Sanai Hospital. After that Ms. Bates was determined to learn more about making masks safer and as a result she worked with a manufacturer who has a patent pending product that could be shaved thin enough to be placed into fabric thus giving her masks much needed filters. To date Barbara Bates designs have provided thousands of masks to first responders. Noelle Diprizio like everyone else went into survival mode. Her company partnered with other craft distilleries and the FDA to map put how to use a product they alread know how to make, ethanol, and the result was making hand sanitizer. They started out servicing first responsders and nursing homes ultimately opening the opportunity to purchase within their commmunities. Dionne Wiliiams' business was hit very hard. Since she is a publicist and evet planner she initially contacted all her event clients to see if they would consider producing virtual events. Most clients postponed until 2021 but a few moved forward with online fundraisers, panel discussions, webinars, etc. On the PR side her business focused on "content is king" by partnering with influencers and producing facebook live shows. Annah Mitchell too saw her business decline tremendously during the pandemic. As the owner of Gobble Doggs food truck, a food kiosk, and catering company Annah initially ceased everything until she could find her footing on how to best move forward. Now with the phase 3 reopening the food truck is out but business has been very slow. Annah's positive attitude is simply that she understands that her business has to be built back up one step at a time. Over the Australian summer, we'll be replaying some of your favourite episodes. We bet you will learn something you missed the first time. Enjoy and see you in 2019.In this episode of Success Stories, Barbara Bates, global CEO of award-winning global communications agency Hotwire and co-founder of Eastwick, one of Silicon Valley’s premier communication firms, speaks with Catherine Robson about the value of designing effective employee engagement, the future of PR and being driven by failure.
This week, on the PRmoment podcast, as part of our life stories series, I’m interviewing Barbara Bates, global CEO of Hotwire. Barbara was joint founder of the independent US tech specialist Eastwick and ran the firm for 25 years before selling to Hotwire, in what was Hotwire’s parent firm Enero Group’s biggest acquisition for the agency to date.Following Hotwire’s takeover of Eastwick, Barbara became global CEO of the agency that had bought her company.Hotwire has grown significantly since the acquisition and now has 250 staff in 12 different countries. Here is a flavour of what we discussed:Barbara outlines how the tech sector has grown throughout her career, particularly in the USBarbara tells us how Eastwick got its witch-themed nameHow to manage a PR firm through three different recessionsWhy PR firms need to be know as being really good at one thingWhy PR firms need to work with both larger brands and start-upsWhy PR firms should be able to prepare their clients for sale, don’t just roll over for the financial PR firmsBarbara tells us how she felt when she had to cut the number of employees in half when the dot-com bubble hitWhy bravery is a vital part of leading a PR firmHow the 2008 financial crash did not impact tech firms in the US “anything like” as much as the dot-com crashWhether the growth the tech sector is currently experiencing is a bubble or the new normWhy the agency of record model has been “dismissed” and firms now want agile specialistsBarbara talks us through the positive growth in the US PR sector currently, with the exception of the large firmsWhy the dearth of available talent in New York and San Francisco is seeing the opening of offices in tier-two citiesWhy Barbara could have sold her business many times over the 10-year period prior to the Hotwire/Eastwick dealWhy cultural misalignment is the chief reason agency acquisitions often don’t workWhy Barbara didn’t think Hotwire would be able to afford EastwickWhat it is like going from being bought by Hotwire to working for HotwireWhy Barbara regrets losing the Eastwick brand so quicklyWhy Barbara taking over as CEO of Hotwire in 2017, replacing previous CEO Brendon Craigie, was not part of the original planThe challenges and lessons of the Hotwire/Eastwick “merger”Why Hotwire is trying to build a networked agency at a time when the networked agency is arguably going out of fashionBarbara tells us about the reasons behind the rapid growth of mid-sized firmsHow the London Hotwire team picked up $1m in fees “in a matter of months” after the Eastwick mergerWhat’s the longer term plan for Barbara and Hotwire?
This week, on the PRmoment Podcast, I’m interviewing Adrian Talbot, global CFO at Hotwire. Most PR agency entrepreneurs I speak to reckon the time they hired an experienced financel director was a critical moment for the growth of their business – so I thought it would be interesting to get an experienced PR agency FD on the show to talk. Adrian has held senior FD posts in various PR firms for the last 15 years, including Hotwire, Instinctif, Bartle Bogle Hegarty and Burson Marsteller. Here is a summary of what we discussed: The most important challenges for a finance director in a consultancy business The difficulties of financial forecasting for a PR firm when clients can give you three months’ notice The difficulties of managing hard-to-predict revenues against a fixed staff cost The difficulty that public relations has in selling an intangible product Why a successful FD must involve themselves in the business – not just be the person who pays the bill Why the FD needs to continually monitor your revenue and staff costs Why Adrian reckons he is in charge of births, marriages and deaths at Hotwire! What do PR firms get wrong in their financial management? Why PR firms should have weekly revenue and pipeline forecast tools How to manage client ove-servicing early Why PR firms need to recognise buy signals and negotiate more strongly The mix of fixed costs and marginal costs that make up a PR firm The cost and profit make-up of most PR firms – people, operating expenses and profit Why the average UK agency profit margin is 13%, against a target of 20% Why the number of freelancers working in PR firms is not dramatically increasing Why freelancers need to be experts within a niche, not generalists Why the definition of a retainer client has changed The challenges of running a PR firm as the company grows Why the key reflection points for agency growth challenges tend to be around 3, 10, 30, 100, and 300 people Why Hotwire is moving to value-based pricing Why clients are not interested in timesheets Why timesheets are now an internal business management tool, not an external pricing mechanisms Why the revenues of PR firms tend to be cyclical How Hotwire has managed to grow its global footprint geographically over the last 10 years How Hotwire’s new(ish) CEO Barbara Bates has had a big impact on Hotwire’s growth in the last two years The difference of being an FD in a public and private owned business Why technology systems are becoming an increasing cost for PR firms Why Adrian has set up the Hotwire band – Borderless Thinkers!
Lee sits down with Barbara Bates to discuss the hot topic of the day: as technology develops and makes it easier to create your own version of the truth, how can brands protect themselves and what is the agencies role in protecting a brand’s reputation?
What I’m learning is that we all come to this crossroads of life and death with a personal story that invokes some of us to action. Barbara Bates Sedoric, a former Estates and Trust paralegal, has always been a person who was “prepared” and “ready” until she was not. The unexpected death of her mother pushed Barbara into a chaotic world that left little room for grief.
