“RICHARD CARLSON: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” (081) - 3/31/2025 Tall, dark-haired, and handsome, RICHARD CARLSON was always a welcomed addition to any cast. From the beginning, when he was playing preppy college students opposite LANA TURNER, to his reign in the 1950s as the King of Sci-Fi thrillers, Carlson brought believability and authority to each role but also a sense of introspective thoughtfulness. You looked into his deep blue eyes and chiseled face and believed him. Whatever he was selling, we were buying. And while he never became an A-list leading man, he enjoyed a long and steady career and enhanced many a mediocre film with his special appeal. This week, we celebrate RICHARD CARLSON as our Star of the Month. EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 12 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Our season begins with Grace Cochrane whose interview with author Kristin Nilsen explores the nuances of the publishing industry. Nilsen penned Worldwide Crush. The novel follows protagonist Millie, a middle schooler who will die if she does not see her crush Rory Calhoun, as she desperately tries to obtain tickets to his concert. Grace and Kristin look at what sparked Kristin's draw to writing, and the inspiration behind the novel. They also dive into the elements of storytelling and what actually makes a good story before wrapping up the interview by discussing why the publishing industry is so important to creative and cultural industries. With our final interview this week we hear Derek Phan as he speaks with the founder and head designer of the clothing brand whathappenedtogod, Saturn. Saturn goes in depth with Derek on the creative direction as well as business management aspects of starting a clothing brand. They also look at the struggles of starting a clothing brand, as well as portraying a proper story for it. They dig into a deeper philosophy and mission for the brand, and discuss the inspiration behind Saturn's work and how that lead to working with the End Overdose Foundation. The interview concludes with Saturn's advice to young creatives trying to pursue a career in the creative and cultural industries.

An all new Appreciation Month is upon us here at Cinema Degeneration and this time we are heading out into the Dystopian fueled nightmares of the Apocalypse with 'Wasteland Appreciation Month.' It's a month long celebration of all things Post-Apocalyptic so you can expect marauders, scavengers, mutants and mayhem, cool car chases, fights over water and fuel, and battles of epic proportions. Our first episode is on an all time B-Movie classic starring the late great Rowdy Roddy Piper with 1988's "HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN" from director Donald G. Jackson. Also starring Sandahl Bergman, William Smith, Rory Calhoun, Nicolas Worth and many more! It's a cautionary tale of what happens when 68% of the male population on earth is wiped out and virile men are a rarity. Piper portrays the character of Sam Hell, one of the last virile men on the planet who is tasked with the mission of rescuing a group of fertile women from a gang of humanoid frogs! If that sounds crazy to you, then you've got to see it to believe it. Our deep dive discussion is headed off by the Three Stooges of Cinema Degeneration... Eric Phillips (Sequel Too, Deja Vu), Korey Dawson (Without Warning) and Cameron Scott. You can expect digressions and rants on everything from legendary actor Royal Dano, John Cena and his eventual evolution into Ernest P. Worrell, multiple ideas for Frogtown reboots and recastings and sequels, and even the Brendan Frasier Mummy franchise. Buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride! "Eat lead, Froggies!!!"

This week's episode checks in to 1980's "Motel Hell." We talk about Rory Calhoun, chainsaw fights, and all the kinds of critters that make Farmer Vincent Fritters. Listen now.
For the epically-long episode 224 we look at two dark comedies with cannibalism at their core. We start off with the 1980 classic "Motel Hell" from show-favorite director Kevin Connor. It focuses on "Farmer Vincent" played by Rory Calhoun and his sister Ida, played by Porky's-own Nancy Parsons. They run the "Motel Hello" and are known all across the local area as the purveyors of "Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats" which we find out are made from waylaid motorists who are trapped, buried in the ground to be fattened up and then butchered and smoked. It isn't a total success but it's an interesting curio from bygone days with a few standout moments that should be seen at least once. We follow this with the seemingly zero-budget "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" from 1997. This is really a thing that has to be seen to be believed. Starring Karen Black as Auntie Lee, Michael Berryman as her bumbling son and Pat Morita as the local sherrif, the cast is definitely stacked for a movie at this level. The story is essentially that Auntie Lee, who worships Satan, takes bad men and turns them into delicious meat pies. Auntie Lee has a gorgeous squad of young women who go out into the world and tempt these bad men into situations where they can be captured and killed and brought back for processing. Directed by Joseph F. Robertson, who mostly has done adult films, this is a weird combination of trippy moments, soft-core sexiness and over-acting! Trust us, it's a completely unique experience. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. Athena Marcus Calhoun was voted "Most Beautiful Showgirl in the World" in 1987. No surprise as she comes from good stock; beautiful stock: Her father was matinee-idol Rory Calhoun and her mother, Vitina Marcus, a glamorous, gorgeous actress. Host Steven Maggi chats with the highly-intelligent, multi-lingual, still-striking beauty about her career, that of her famous mother and father, growing up in Vegas, and more. https://vegasneversleeps.com/
There's a little something for everyone this week on the Blu-ray scene. Especially if you like it weird. Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress again to talk about Criterion's release of one of the landmarks of international cinema. Barbara Hershey takes on apartheid and Rory Calhoun explores as Marco Polo. Peter chimes in on the Black Panther sequel while there are also new 4K releases of an Oscar-winning musical and a charming zombie romcom. Then it gets weirder with a campy sequel getting its own 4K release, Bill Paxton fighting the homeless and a bizarre internet thriller featuring Peter's favorite actress and one of Erik's favorite musicians. Last but certainly not least and weird in the best ways, another tribute to arguably the best performance of Bruce Campbell's career. In this week's episode, we're concluding our siblings-running-a-farm rock block with the 1980 utterly bananas film "Motel Hell." Truly, the mind boggles. Special topics for your consideration include: a fantastic tagline for a movie or a brand of smoked meats or really whatever you're promoting, the siren call of Rory Calhoun, terrible police work, absolutely baffling motivations, and the age old question of what did characters know and when did they know it? I'm putting this up there with a handful of my other favorite bizarre horror movies of the 1980s- Episode 35- "Neon Maniacs," Episode 140- "Killer Klowns from Outer Space," Episode 174- "Chopping Mall," and Episode 265- "Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama." Motel Hell (1980) An American comedy horror film directed by Kevin Connor[2] and starring Rory Calhoun, Nancy Parsons, and Nina Axelrod. The plot follows farmer, butcher, motel manager, and meat entrepreneur Vincent Smith, who traps travellers and harvests them for his human sausages. Because of its low budget, the original intent was to make a serious horror film, with moments of disturbing wit and irony. It is often seen as a satire of modern horror films such as Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. American Gothic (1988) This American slasher film is directed by John Hough and starring Rod Steiger, Yvonne DeCarlo and Michael J Pollard. You either love this or you hate it. Critics were mixed with one critic stating…. the film "comes through with an impressive array of truly sicko surprises... Rod Steiger and Yvonne DeCarlo are consistently entertaining in what may be the most humiliating roles of their already checkered careers. Opening Credits/Introduction (1.51); Oh My GOD!!! Buon ascolto! #podcast #Motelhell #anni80 #horror #trash #funny #farm #chainsaw

I had author and ex tabloid reporter Barbara Sternig on the show. Let me tell you, you can't be a wuss and work for The Enquirer. Her books are Secrets Of A Tabloid Reporter and Celebrity Secrets Of A National Enquirer Reporter. I read them in a weekend. Easy and fun reads. What celebrity and sex symbol slugged Barbara on set, I wanna Know, Who did Barbara peep at through hole in fence to get her story, she got it. She tells us stories about Robert Mitchum, Rory Calhoun, Robert Culp, Richard Burton, a very sweet Tammy Wynette and many more. The National Enquirer was very hated, and the reporters were as well. This is before everyone and his mother has a gossip blog or social media. Give a listen. Lots of good scoops..Thanks for listening. I talked to Rock Hudson Biographer Mark Griffin about his new book All That Heaven Allows: Rock Hudson A Biography. His book takes us through Rocks childhood, his struggling days in L.A. to him meeting Henry Wilson, agent to a stable of pretty boys. He took on Rock and eventually, after roles as Indians and small parts Rock achieved superstardom from the Douglas Sirk film Magnificent Obsession. Rock was reunited with Jane Wyman in one of my fave Rock movies, All That Heaven Allows. Who could pass up the deliciously nasty Mona Plasch..We talk about Rocks personal life being in the closet. Confidential magazine was going to out Rock as gay so allegedly Henry Wilson gave them Rory Calhoun was a jailbird..I couldn't imagine they'd trade for that. It looks like Henry Wilson threw Tab Hunter under the bus in an article about a boys PJ party raided by the police. As Rock was nearing 30 the rags would wonder if Rock would finally settle down, or was something wrong with him. At thirty Henry Wilson arranged dating and a marriage between Rock and Henrys secretary Phyllis Gates. Phyllis claimed she had NO IDEA Rock was gay. You will find out more that Phyllis did. Matt talked all Rocks best movies, Rocks loves and how horrible it must have been for Rock to lead a double life. He had to be very trusting and careful that none of his past loves had compromising pictures or letters from him. I can't imagine what that did to him emotionally and physically. We wind our way down to Rocks TV career to Rock finding out he had the Aids virus. He had a blotch on his neck and was actually diagnosed by his dermatologist. We talk the famous Linda Evans, Rock kiss and Rocks final days. Rock was the first famous person to put a face to AIDS . Especially such a beloved one. This is broken into three parts. Matt is fabulous and my heart went out to Rock. I'm not the only person to think the book was wonderful. Universal, Rocks old studio optioned the book to be a major motion picture. Thanks so much to Mark for being such a great guest. I learned so much more then I ever knew about Rock. He meticulously wrote this book. Lots of great contacts. It took him four years. Mostly thanks to the audience. I so appreciate you listening.Gracexoxo All things Markwww.markgriffinauthor.com Mewww,truestoriesoftinseltown.comwww.truestoriesoftinseltown.podbean.complease follow my facebook page. A killer rabbit movie? Yes please. We love rabbits, especially grilled. And we give this one a good grilling. Night of the Lepus features some pretty high wattage star power, including old timey Western star Rory Calhoun, Deforrest Kelley (Star Trek) and Janet Leigh (Psycho). An experiment goes awry, causing oversized bunnies to run amok somewhere in Arizona. Or was it New Mexico? Who cares! How much should we mess with nature? Hubris of man, the laws of nature...all these and terrible jokes featured on this edition of the podcast.
