“RICHARD CARLSON: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” (081) - 3/31/2025 Tall, dark-haired, and handsome, RICHARD CARLSON was always a welcomed addition to any cast. From the beginning, when he was playing preppy college students opposite LANA TURNER, to his reign in the 1950s as the King of Sci-Fi thrillers, Carlson brought believability and authority to each role but also a sense of introspective thoughtfulness. You looked into his deep blue eyes and chiseled face and believed him. Whatever he was selling, we were buying. And while he never became an A-list leading man, he enjoyed a long and steady career and enhanced many a mediocre film with his special appeal. This week, we celebrate RICHARD CARLSON as our Star of the Month.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Monsters in the Machine (2016), by Steffen Hantke; Keep Watching the Skies (2009), by Bill Warren; “Richard Carlson: Albert Lea's Other Film & Television Star,” December 24, 2016, by Ed Shannon; “Today's Underrated Actor Spotlight: Richard Carlson,” June 24, 2105, by Bynum, www.thetinseltoentwins.com; “A Tribute To Richard Carlson,' January 9, 2014, www.scififilmfiesta.com; “Richard Carlson, Actor, Dies at 65,” November 27, 1977, New York Times; Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; Movies Mentioned:  Desert Death (1935), starring Raymond Hatton; The Young in Heart (1938), starring Janet Gaynor, Roland Young, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr & Paulette Goddard; The Duke of West Point (1938), starring Louis Hayward & Joan Fontaine; Winter Carnival (1939), starring Ann Sheridan, Richard Carlson, & Robert Mitchum; These Glamour Girls (1939), starring Lana Turner & Lew Ayres; Dancing Co-Ed (1939), starring Lana Turner & Richard Carlson; Beyond Tomorrow (1940), starring Haley Carey & Charles Winning; No, No, Nanette (1940), starring Anna Neagle; The Howards of Virginia (1940), starring Cary Grant & Martha Scott; Back Street (1941), starring Margaret Sullavan & Charles Boyer; The Little Foxes (1941Ol staring Bette Davis & Teresa Wright; The Affairs of Martha (1942), starring Marsha Hunt & Richard Carlson; My Heart Belongs to Daddy (1942), starring Richard Carlson & Martha O'Driscoll; Fly By Night (1942) starring Richard Carlson & Nancy Kelly; Hold That Ghost (1941), starring Bud Abbot & Lou Costello; White Cargo (1942), staring Hedy Lamarr& Walter Pidgeon; Presenting Lily Mars (1943), starring Judy Garland & Van Heflin; The Man From Down Under (1943), starring Charles Laughton & Donna Reed; So Well Remembered (1947), starring John Mills & Martha Scott; Behind Locked Doors (1948), starring Richard Carlson & Lucille Bremer; The Amazing Mr. X (1948), starring Turban Bey, Lynn Bari, & Cathy O'Donnell; King Solomon's Mines (1950), starring Stewart Granger & Deborah Kerr; The Sound of Fury (1950), starring Frank Lovejoy; The Blue Veil (1951), starring Jane Wyman, Charles Laughton, & Joan Blondell; The Magnetic Monster (1953), starring Richard Carlson; It Came from Outer Space (1954), starring Richard Carlson & Barbara Rush; The Maze (1953), starring Richard Carlson & Hillary Brooke; The Creature from The Black Lagoon (1954), starring Richard Carlson & Julie Adams; All I Desire (1953), starring Barbara Stanwyck & Richard Carlson; Riders To the Stars (1954), starring William Lundigan; Appointment with a Shadow (1957), starring George Nadar; The Saga of Hemp Brown (1957), starring Rory Calhoun; Johnny Rocco (1958), starring Richard Evers & Coleen Gray; Tormented (1960), starring Richard Carlson; Kid Rodelo (1966), starring Broderick Crawford & Janet Leigh; Change of Habit (1969), starring Elvis Pressly, Mary Tyler moore, & Richard Carlson; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. "MARY BETH HUGHES - CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 3/03/2025 For those of you who don't know the charms of MARY BETH HUGHES, when she was under contract at MGM, she was dubbed "the poor man's LANA TURNER." It was a rather unfair assessment since MGM gave Lana all the plum roles, and Mary Beth got her hand-me-downs. But still, Mary Beth had great comic chops, and no one played bitchy, hard-boiled blondes as well as she. Despite her beauty and talent, she never managed to get out of B-pictures. She did have small parts in great films like The Women (1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). She played the good girl as often as she played the bad girl, but when she played bad....you were in for a treat. Her pouty lips, snappy dialogue, and petulant attitude lit up many a lackluster production. This week, we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. EPISODE 33 - “Zachary Scott: Star of the Month (May)” - 04/29/2024 Suave, debonaire, and effortlessly charming, ZACHARY SCOTT is best known for his role in MICHAEL CURTIZ's film noir classic Mildred Pierce (1945). As the duplicitous, silver-tongued charmer Monte Beragon, he romances Mildred, played by JOAN CRAWFORD (in her Oscar-winning role), and Mildred's daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH). This became Scott's signature role: the sexy cad who was usually at his best swindling, seducing, or being a general scoundrel. It was always fun watching Scott's dastardly ways unfold. He could rock a tux, looked naked without a martini in his hand, and always had a cigarette close by. He was so magnetic that he could even make film-goers feel sorry for him. While he seldom got to play the good guy, when he did, as in what is perhaps one of his best roles in JEAN RENOIR's The Southerner (1945), you realize the versatility that he seldom had the opportunity to display. With a career that included over 40 films and dozens of television roles, ZACHARY SCOTT is our Star of the Month. EPISODE 29 - “Jan Sterling: Old Hollywood Star of the Month” - 04/01/2024 Our “Star of the Month” is the fabulous JAN STERLING, who was married to our March “Star of the Month,” PAUL DOUGLAS. Blonde, beautiful, and often deadly on screen, Sterling started in theatre, but made a name for herself portraying tough dames, femme fatales, and sexy seductresses in films such as “Caged,” “Ace In the Hole” and “The High and the Mighty.” However, her upbringing was quite different from these wayward women she played so convincingly; she was actually from a very wealthy and prominent family. She had a stellar career, but many heartbreaks off camera. This week, we discuss the life and career of this most memorable lady.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Jan Sterling: Everything You Need To Know (2014), by Billy Vasquez; The Encyclopedia of Film Actors (2003), by Barry Monush; The Illustrated Who's Who of the Cinema (1983), by Ann Lloyd and Graham Fuller; Quinlan's Illustrated Registry of Film Stars (1986), by David Quinlan; “Jan Sterling, 82, Blonde Actress Who Made Film Noir A Specialty” Obituary, March 29, 2004, The New York Times; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Tycoon (1947), starring John Wayne, Laaine Day, and Anthony Quinn; Johnny Belinda (1948), starring Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, and Agnes Moorhead; Caged (1950), starring Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorhead, and Faye Emerson; Appointment With Danger (1950), starring Robert Walker and Joan Leslie; The Mating Season (1950), starring Gene Tierney, John Lund, and Thelma Ritter; Ace In The Hole (1951), starring Kirk Douglas; Rhubarb (1951), starring Ray Miland; Flesh and Fury (1952), starring Tony Curtis; Sky Full of Moon (1952), starring  Split Second (1953), starring Stephen McNally; Pony Express (1953), starring Charlton Heston and Rhonda Fleming; The Vanquished (1953), starring John Payne and Coleen Gray; Alaska Seas (1954), starring Robert Ryan; The High and the Mighty (19543), starring John Wayne, Robert Stack, Claire Trevor, and Laraine Day; Woman's Prison (1955), starring Ida Lupino, Pyllis Thaxter, Audrey Totter, and Howard Duff; Female on the Beach (1955), starring Joan Crawford and Jeff Chandler; The Harder They Fall (1956), starring Humphrey Bogart and Rod Steiger; 1984 (1956), starring Edmond O'Brien and Michael Redgrave; The Female Animal (1958), starring Hedy Lamar, Jane Powell, and George Nader; Kathy O (1958), starring Dan Duryea and Patty McCormick; High School Confidential (1958), starring Russ Tamblyn and Mamie Van Doren; Love In A Goldfish Bowl (1961), staring Fabian, Tommy Sands, and Majel Barrett; The Incident (1967), Starring Martin Sheen, Beau Bridges, and Tony Musante;  The Minx (1969), starring Robert Roden and Shirley Parker; First Monday in October (1981), Starring Walter Matthau and Jill Clayburgh; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. Welcome to this week's episode of “Friday Night Noir” on Vintage Classic Radio, where the shadows talk and the suspense is as thick as fog. Tonight, we delve into the eerie corners of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater with "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale of deduction. Join our insightful protagonist as he uses his exceptional powers of reasoning to unravel a Parisian mystery that baffles the police. The haunting streets of Paris come alive with the voices of our stellar cast, featuring the astute Paul Lukas as the keen-minded sleuth, with support from the talented Santos Ortega and Bryna Raeburn in pivotal roles. Following this gripping tale, we rewind time to 1942 with "Suspense" and the episode "Two Sharp Knives," which springs from the mind of the masterful Dashiell Hammett. As the clock ticks in the small town of Brentwood, we follow Scott Anderson, the diligent Chief of Police played by the commanding Lew Ayres, who, along with his wise-cracking sidekick, Wally Maher, discovers that sometimes justice can be as slippery as a greased blade. The plot thickens, and tension mounts with each passing minute, courtesy of the incredible ensemble including the versatile Jeanette Nolan and the robust Edmund MacDonald. Both stories tonight are penned by literary giants. Edgar Allan Poe, the father of the detective story, gifts us with a narrative that combines his trademark gothic atmosphere with an intellectual puzzle, while Dashiell Hammett, a former Pinkerton detective himself, offers a gritty, realistic look at crime and its consequences. So, turn down the lights, settle into your armchair, and prepare for an evening of mystery and suspense that will leave your heart racing and your mind reeling. Remember, when the truth is stranger than fiction, you're in the realm of “Friday Night Noir.” Enjoy the show.

Also, discussions of war, dismemberment, mass death, post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD), “shell shock”, gruesome death and injury, fear, grief, murder. Our next History Lesson takes us to the Great War and the German war machine leading valiant young men into the greatest human meat grinder of the 20th Century. At the Western Front of World War I, millions were killed in matters of days as generals and nobles led young boys and men into constant machine gun fire in battles that yielded little more than feet of territory. And this film depicts every bit of that, in fairly graphic detail, with one caveat - it's our oldest film yet, premiering in 1930. Director Lewis Milestone had a vision for this film though, a bold, brash, and bleak vision of the horror of war, which complemented Erich Maria Remarque's landmark novel perfectly. It's a film so stirring in its visual depiction of the massive global trauma of war that its star, Lew Ayres, became a conscientious objector to World War II, an admittedly greater effort for the common good. And it's all because of a truly masterful work, whose only flaw is its age - the style of acting, the dialogue and structure, it's all a bit new to movies, and can be choppy at times. But it's guaranteed that this film will leave you with lasting images throughout your life. Enjoy two free medical drama episodes of The Story of Dr. Kildare w/ Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore A) 12/7/49 Appendectomy B) 12/14/49 Experimental Cancer Treatment In 1949, MGM Studios decided to embark on a new and potentially very profitable business venture – producing transcription discs of radio programs for syndication. Convinced they could build on the success of the already released Dr. Kildare motion-picture series, the studio hired Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore to reprise their screen roles as Dr. James Kildare and Dr. Leonard Gillespie, respectively. Kildare was a compassionate, caring physician at Blair General Hospital, New York City; Gillespie a crusty, lovable diagnostician. As Kildare reminded listeners week after week in the opening signature: Whatsoever house I enter, there will I go for the benefit of the sick, and whatever things I see or hear concerning the life of men I will keep silent thereon, counting such things to be held as sacred trusts. Lionel Barrymore became physically disabled before his screen role as Dr. Gillespie came to an end. Having already broken his hip twice, his condition deteriorated and he was confined to a wheelchair. Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, assured the actor that there would always be employment for him at the studio and he was true to his word. Barrymore was soon in front of the microphone playing the physically active Dr. Gillespie and the radio audience was none the wiser. A total of 78 transcription discs were produced and syndicated across the country on local stations, with commercial time sold to local interests. Stations nationwide continued to air The Story of Dr. Kildare on radio a few years after Barrymore's death in 1954.

In honor of the 100th anniversary since the end of World War I, Amy and Steve look back at the 3rd Academy Award winner, All Quiet On The Western Front, a film that time has hardly touched...and we wonder if that's a good or bad thing. We have seen all it has done before; but put yourself in the shoes of someone back then, imagine how this modern work would appear? Plus, sure he has some cheesy moments, but why wasn't Lew Ayres nominated? And the limited categories are felt here, as Louis Wolheim deserves a place at the table. All this, and Amy explains the film's title...and more, this week on the podcast. Thank you for listening. See you next week. In the summer of 1949, MGM reunited Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore to record the radio series, The Story of Dr. Kildare, which used the concept and characters of the earlier Young Dr. Kildare story and did not include any of the young doctors who had replaced Kildare in the later films featuring Dr. Gillespie. By this time, Ayres had returned to public favor after serving in WWII as a medical corpsman. Episodes were scripted by James Moser, Jean Holloway, Les Crutchfield, E. Jack Newman, John Michael Hayes, Joel Murcott, and others. The supporting cast included Ted Osborne as hospital administrator Dr. Carew, Eleanor Audley as receptionist Molly Byrd, Jane Webb as nurse Mary Lamont, and Virginia Gregg as nurse Evangeline Parker, labeled “Nosy Parker” by Gillespie. In addition, many prominent West Coast radio actors made recurring appearances, including Raymond Burr, William Conrad, Stacy Harris, Lurene Tuttle, Barton Yarborough, and Jack Webb.

There are reminiscences from cast and crew, including new and exclusive interviews with Tobe Hooper, David Soul, cinematographer Jules Brenner and producer Richard Kobritz; dozens of images, including many never before published behind-the-scenes production stills; deleted scenes from the original teleplay; foreign posters and artwork inspired by the film; photographs of Ferndale, California, where the exteriors ofSalem's Lot were filmed; and much, much more.

The Story Of Doctor Kildare - Dr. James Kildare was a fictional character, the primary character in a series of American theatrical films in the late 1930s and early 1940s, an early 1950s radio series, a 1960s television series of the same name and a comic book based on the TV show. The character was invented by the author Frederick Schiller Faust (aka Max Brand). The character began in the film series as a medical intern; after becoming a doctor he was mentored by an older physician, Dr. Leonard Gillespie. After the first ten films, the series eliminated the character of Kildare and focused instead on Gillespie.THIS EPISODE:December 8, 1950. Program #46. The Story of Dr. Kildare was based on the popular MGM films that were produced in the 1940's, so a radio version in 1949 made perfect sense. The screen actor Lew Ayres played Dr. Kildare in the films, and continued the role in this radio show. The great thespian Lionel Barrymore continued in his role as Kildare's mentor, Dr. Leonard Gillespie. Together the two fight an unending battle against disease and bureaucratic boneheadedness. In a sense, Dr. Kildare is good old fashioned soap opera, but then medical dramas have always been popular, and the good Dr. Kildare is a quiet and devoted medical hero who creates a better world one patient at a time, despite whatever gets in the way. That makes for good radio and a good object lesson for us all - good is usually done a little at a time, and there's always something or someone in the way.
