"I'm a huge Black dude, I'm strapped... leave me alone so I can enjoy the people I love." -- Dante Powell One of the good things about yielding your life and sanity to the road/ comedians/ comedy for a couple of years is that it has allowed me to become a bigger fan, to become a better fan, to become a deeper fan. I met Dante a couple of years ago at the Bird City Comedy Festival and it gave me an opportunity to experience his art over a timeline as it has rapidly evolved. Put another way: this guy has gotten really good, really fast. I hate the phrase "good vibes only" with all of my being but be warned, there are truly despicable amount of good vibes in this episode. Dante Powell, where do we even start. Okay, he is a stand up comedian. Good start. He is based in Des Moines, Iowa but grew up in Bernice, Louisiana. His work has been featured on SiriusXM radio, NPR, and kweliTV. His comedy album “The Squirrels Get Fat” debuted at #1 on the iTunes/Amazon comedy charts. What else is there? Oh, he has been a regular at many of the comedy venues you frequent. Clubs, bars, theaters, he does them all! Thank you for reading this bio.

At the Grand Central Coffee Company, hilarious stand-up comedian Jason Hill and I demonstrated our difference in professionalism when he ordered a black coffee and I had an 11:00 AM beer. Then we got serious about the bonds in the stand-up community, turning personal struggle into jokes, and the rush of manipulating people. You can see Jason at the Bird City Comedy Festival at April 6 at 9:00 PM, and April 7 and 8 at 10:30 PM. Remember when pretty much the only place to see stand-up comedy in the Valley was the Improv in Tempe? Well, now you can see it every night of the week at dozens of venues throughout this sprawling land. The stand-up comedy scene has taken off in the last decade, from wannabe comics coming out of the woodwork at open mics to national names commonplace on local marquees. And now we have Bird City Comedy Festival, April 6-9, in its second year featuring more than 100 funny performers from around the country. You'll see stand-up, improv, sketch, storytelling and more. Founder Genevieve Rice sits down with us to discuss comedy and its place in the Valley. LOL!

We had the admirable, the wonderful Ronnie D (@ronniedphx, Bird City Comedy Festival, Big Pine Comedy Festival) on the Golden Girls podcast! We watched a two-parter and did it all in one recording because of a very dooming cliffhanger. It was the one where Dorothy feels sick and doctors can't figure out what's wrong. We had the always amazing Heidi Geldis-Young (@heidigeldis, Bird City Comedy Festival, Big Pine Comedy Festival) and the amazingly always Kirsten Alberts (@DirtyHippyComic, FOX's Laughs, Comedy Central Radio) on the Golden Girls podcast once again! Join us with our rad guests Chris Trew, Ron Babcock and Ryan McKee as we thoroughly explore the topic of time along with a very special segment on small animal confessions.
We had the sublime Alley Lightfoot (@SpookyMulderrr, Bird City Comedy Festival, Snap Battles Finalist) on the Golden Girls podcast! ... And it was a BLAST!!! We always say that but this time it's REAL. We watched the 2nd part of Sophia's Wedding but you really don't need to listen to the 1st part to get it, we promise! In this one, Sophia and Max's new husband open up a knish and pizza stand. Also, Dorothy picks up smoking again. We talked about Judge Judy's face lighting, Bleeding Gums Murphy and of course, curses. Music by Mike Dennison (@mikd33) and Brian Kokernak (@kokernutz).
This episode was recorded live at Bird City Comedy Festival in Phoenix. Jeremy, Kenny, and Kris were on the panel. We had amazing comedians from all over as storytellers. The theme was Dating, but all the stories were about random hookups with strangers. First up was Tyler Snodgrass with a story about an intimate moment on an airplane. Tyler Snodgrass is a comedian living in Chicago. He produces the shame-based storytelling comedy show, We Still Like You, writes for The Whiskey Journal, and performs all over the country. He has a good heart and an OK face. Next, Sofiya Alexandra told a story about losing her virginity to a guy with a mohawk. Somehow that wasn't his worst trait. Sofiya Alexandra grew up in Odessa, Ukraine, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11. She performs standup at venues all over LA, including The Comedy Store, UCB, The Improv, and throughout the alt comedy scene. She was named one of The Fifty Funniest Women on Twitter by Playboy and one of 18 Funny Women You Should Be Following on Twitter by Huffington Post. She currently writes on Amazon's Danger & Eggs. After that, Matt Storrs told a story about someone freaking out in a very odd and ominous way. Matt Storrs is a humor person living in Phoenix. He hosts The Storrs Objection and is the fact-checker for Phoenix Educational Programming's PEP Rally. Lastly, Jonathan Gregory tried to molest Jeremy onstage. Eventually he told a story and it was so goddamn funny. Jonathan Gregory's unique one of a kind "creepy" comedy has audiences howling wherever he goes . A cross between Steven Wright and Sam Kinison, Jonathan has over 8 million hits on YouTube; and his television credits include Showtime Boxing, NBC's Last Comic Standing season 6, and E! Network's True Hollywood Stories Investigates Hazing.
LIVE from the Bird City Comedy Festival! Our guests this week are the astonishing, prolific Ever Mainard (@evermainard, Showtime's Knock, Knock- It's Tig, Just For Laughs) and the magical enigma that is Chris Trew (@christrew, The New Movement, Hell Yes Fest). We watched the one where Sophia reunites with an old family friend and decides that she must marry him right away. Also Rose and Blanche begin an unofficial Elvis club. We talked about butt choking, owl professors and Crambone. Music by Mike Dennison (@mikd33) and Brian Kokernak (@kokernutz).
