This week we're joined by comedian Max Fine (In the Minivan Podcast) to discuss the incredible songwriting and impeccable aesthetics of the late great Justin Townes Earle. Narrowing down which song from Earle's diverse catalog to add to our ongoing playlist was tough, but we settled on one of his earliest songs, the bouncy, minimalist country ditty "I Don't Care" from his debut EP Yuma. We also discuss Justin's famous father Steve Earle, his relationship with Jason Isbell, and how we all did on various standardized tests. For just 5$ a month you can help keep the lights on and get access to bonus episodes! Tyler has the group watch the 1977 animated television special "Halloween is Grinch Night," a prequel/sequel/alternate history (???) of the Grinch and his infamous foes, the Whos of Whoville. The gang discusses sour sweet wind, Dr. Seuss' racism, the "euphemism," and Max's surprisingly depressing storyline. This was long before mittens were a thing. The Big Mice liked Michigan, but it surrounded by nothing but empty canyons. So they set out to find water. Which they did. Find water, I mean. Each Big Mouse filled its cheeks up real big, ran back to Michigan, and spit into the empty canyons. They put on floppy hats and learned how to do underwater somersaults. It was nice. But the Big Mice had other worlds to explore, and eventually piled back into their translucent traveling sphere and rolled away, leaving behind nothing but good vibes. This was long after good vibes were a thing. Story written by Allison Schleisman Voice by Thomas Anthony Jones Artwork by Tyler Snodgrass: on Instagram @tyler_snod and on Twitter @tylersnod

The Skewer closes out 2017, the worst year, with another delightful edition. Check it out as Kristin Lytie channels a DoL rep to bemoan the state of labor in modern America, Tyler Snodgrass runs through the deal with Michael Flynn and all connected morons, Angela Vela reviewed the frustratingly litigation-free world of extremely negligent hunting accidents, and Erika Price takes the misinformation out of the imminent loss of net neutrality. And in the Skewer debate, erica dreisbach took on Ashley Ray-Harris to figure out 2017's best plan of attack in the SJW War on Christmas. Plus, of course, host Tom Harrison and a fake news quiz from Kevin Johnson. As awful as 2017 was overall, we can't overstate how fun a year it was at the Skewer. Thanks for listening and see you in February!

Cody is re-joined by writers/comedians Dan Sheehan and Tyler Snodgrass to avoid talking about baseball while being forced to talk about baseball. You can find your copy of the book at the house of your local old man after you accidentally hit a ball into his yard which also contains a very large dog. 'Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts: Baseball as a Spiritual Experience' by Austin Gisriel No other sport, and indeed few other activities evoke as much passion as does baseball. It is a passion that unites generations and genders, laborers and lawyers, Republicans and Democrats. Baseball serves as a common language, a unified way of perceiving the world, a means to greater understanding. Baseball’s shrines, rituals, myths, and heroes certainly give it a religious aura, but many activities may be pursued “religiously.” Baseball is beyond religion. It is a living myth that puts us in touch with Eternity, with the Infinite. Its Miracle is not some long-ago act that contradicts the laws of physics. Its Miracle is the scrubbing away of cynicism to reveal the fresh-faced child within who is ready to believe, eager to believe, who does believe. Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts: Baseball as a Spiritual Experience is an examination in memoir form of how baseball nourishes the spiritual side of those who are part of the game. This episode was recorded live at Bird City Comedy Festival in Phoenix. Jeremy, Kenny, and Kris were on the panel. We had amazing comedians from all over as storytellers. The theme was Dating, but all the stories were about random hookups with strangers. First up was Tyler Snodgrass with a story about an intimate moment on an airplane. Tyler Snodgrass is a comedian living in Chicago. He produces the shame-based storytelling comedy show, We Still Like You, writes for The Whiskey Journal, and performs all over the country. He has a good heart and an OK face. Next, Sofiya Alexandra told a story about losing her virginity to a guy with a mohawk. Somehow that wasn't his worst trait. Sofiya Alexandra grew up in Odessa, Ukraine, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11. She performs standup at venues all over LA, including The Comedy Store, UCB, The Improv, and throughout the alt comedy scene. She was named one of The Fifty Funniest Women on Twitter by Playboy and one of 18 Funny Women You Should Be Following on Twitter by Huffington Post. She currently writes on Amazon's Danger & Eggs. After that, Matt Storrs told a story about someone freaking out in a very odd and ominous way. Matt Storrs is a humor person living in Phoenix. He hosts The Storrs Objection and is the fact-checker for Phoenix Educational Programming's PEP Rally. Lastly, Jonathan Gregory tried to molest Jeremy onstage. Eventually he told a story and it was so goddamn funny. Jonathan Gregory's unique one of a kind "creepy" comedy has audiences howling wherever he goes . A cross between Steven Wright and Sam Kinison, Jonathan has over 8 million hits on YouTube; and his television credits include Showtime Boxing, NBC's Last Comic Standing season 6, and E! Network's True Hollywood Stories Investigates Hazing.
