Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris finally catch up on the Alphabet Soup-er Series. It was Dan's pick for the letter V, and he went with the GameCube classic Viewtiful Joe. How does this movie themed action game stand the test of time? What does HMD stand for? Why does Joe look like nerdy Fred Durst? Let's find out! Then, in Week Old News, Nintendo gets unsurprisingly litigious, Ecco is making a comeback that might be linked to the Amico, and EA is being slightly… not evil? Finally, in The Checkpoint Dan gives an update on Tiff's condition, and gives his final impressions of South of Midnight, while Kris gets a new weed wacker and tries his hand at Shotgun Cop Man. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Kris was feeling a bit under the weather, so they delayed talking about Viewtiful Joe in favor of doing something easier. Except that ranking every Nintendo franchise that's not on Switch is WAY HARDER than talking about Viewtiful Joe! So yeah, buckle up for that marathon of nonsense. Then, in Week Old News, Nintendo finally opens pre-orders for Switch 2 in North America, and increases the prices of its accessories. Speaking of price increases, Sony made the PS5 more expensive again, too. Finally, Dan's been playing a bunch of stuff from a Humble Bundle, particularly Gato Roboto, which is excellent. Meanwhile, some nice folks did something really nice for Kris, while he worked himself to death, and played a few more minutes of Paper Mario. Enjoy! Nintendos Würfel feiert in diesen Wochen seinen 20.

Nintendos Würfel feiert in diesen Wochen seinen 20. Today, we're painting a picture of Ōkami, the 2006 action-adventure game that transformed Japanese mythology into a living watercolor masterpiece. We begin by exploring how Hideki Kamiya, fresh off titles like Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe, sought to create something more peaceful and healing—an idea that evolved into a game about the sun goddess Amaterasu, reborn as a white wolf. Then, we'll trace the game's journey from technical struggles and uncertain direction to the moment of inspiration that led to its unique art style and the creation of the Celestial Brush mechanic. Finally, we'll reflect on Ōkami's legacy, from its initial commercial struggles to its critical acclaim, cult following, and long-awaited sequel now in development. So, grab your brush and join us as we restore color to the world on today's trip down Memory Card Lane! Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co

I immediately thought to myself this looks like what a switch pro was going to be. However I was curious and looking forward to the direct and after seeing the direct, this doesnt feel like a new console to me. It basically feel like the Switch Pro. For 499 bucks? And 80 bucks per game. I'm going to wait or just buy a steam deck.   Eric Plunk — 4/3/2025 9:50 AM I want to see a TV dinner style tray to use the mouse function on with interchangeable tray tops. Bonus points if they have one that looks like the SNES mouse pad   DoubleD — 4/3/2025 10:51 AM For me, this is exactly what I wanted for the next Nintendo console. This direct was a complete 180 from the previous one, where the only thing that really got me hyped was Metroid Prime 4. I'm 100% on board with being an early adopter for this, whereas, I wasn't when the original Switch was announced. They're truly making a version of the Switch that I always wanted. Not only that, but they also announced games that I'm excited for, which seals the deal that it's going to be a day 1 purchase. I didn't expect it, but the game I am most excited for is DK Bananza! Also, with my kids getting older and moving out, I love the integrated video chat and screen sharing options. I still won't get the higher tier of NSO though, so I'll just keep playing Gamecube games on my Gamecube, but I love that they added it.   SNES_is_Life — 4/3/2025 10:53 AM DK looks great for sure.   txTrey — 4/3/2025 11:29 AM My kids are still younger, but my third thought about that chat stuff was that I could do it with them when they move out or go to college. I still have probably one more Nintendo console release before that happens, so hopefully it carries forward    ChrisHL94

It's one of the coolest games I've ever played, even if I can't finish it because I'm constantly rage-quitting. If you've never played it, it's a side-scrolling beat em 'up, but with the extra hook of superpowers. You can slow everything down, speed everything up, and zoom the camera in while doing it. Those abilities makes the combat infinitely more fun, and you use them to solve puzzles too. Oh, and the game is tough. Really fucking tough. Normally I'd toss my controller away at some point and give up, but the addictive combat just keeps me coming back for one more try. Viewtiful Keegs gave me a call (literally, he's on vacation so we had to do this one over the phone) to talk about what makes this game so cool. Seriously, it's really fucking cool. We also got into how we both suck at it, and then we slapped some Hall of Fame worthy scores on top to wrap everything up. And before we get Viewtiful, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I ever watched my parents play games back in the day. Show Notes As the month of October draws to a close, so must Dan and Kris dive into this month's 10 20 30 40 with enthusiastic aplomb. Each month, they look back at notable game releases from 10, 20, 30, and 40 years ago, and while there were some nasty technical difficulties preventing them from efficiently dong to (Thanks to Metacritic changing the way their site works), they still managed to pull it off! This time around, the 10 and 30 were fairly mundane, but the 20 and 40 were quite stellar with some fantastic Atari 2600 arcade port like Dig Dug and Joust, and the PS2/Xbox/GameCube generation seeing some killer classics like Jak II, Viewtiful Joe, and Crimson Skies. At the top of the show, Kris tells the story of how he went to New York city to see The State live on stage, and how a stranger with a jump drive made his day. Dan didn't do much gaming thanks to a visit from his in-laws, but did get to catch up on some fantastic TV, and finally get some time in with Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. But the big story was the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Kris spent some time with the game and it's every bit as magical as he thought it would be. Is it the best Mario game since the Super NES? Only time will tell. enjoy! A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

The early 2000s, spanning from 2000 to 2003, were a whirlwind of change and innovation for the video game industry. In 2000, a culmination of creativity met technology, with Sony's PlayStation taking center stage and the indie scene gaining prominence. Video games started gaining a foothold as a recognized art form, while Sega gracefully exited the console market to make way for new players. 2001 saw a surge in console wars with the debut of the GameCube and Xbox, while storytelling in games reached cinematic proportions. By 2002, the allure of sequels reigned supreme, with franchises opting for familiarity, and the end of an era for Rare as Microsoft acquired it. The year 2003 then marked significant mergers, with giants like Square and Enix joining forces and Valve launching Steam. Video games officially became a mainstream industry, drawing in significant investments and changing the face of game development. As the lines between art, entertainment, and business blurred, the early 2000s set the stage for the future of gaming.Featured Games:The Sims, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Thief II: The Metal Age, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, Halo: Combat Evolved, Grand Theft Auto III, Oni, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Final Fantasy X, ICO, Onimusha: Warlords, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Metroid Prime, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Freedom Fighters, and Viewtiful Joe. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 6 (00:06) - 2000 (21:54) - 2001 (46:35) - 2002 (59:37) - 2003 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

I don't think there's franchise that I've grown more fond of since the beginning of this podcast than Resident Evil. I went from only playing a couple of the mainline games, to running through most of the core games in the series. But I always slept on Code Veronica, because I assumed it was just a half-assed spin-off.    Turns out, it's kinda like Resident Evil 3.5 as far as the main series goes, and it's actually pretty fun! There's a boss fight on a plane that can get bent, and getting rid of a fire extinguisher screwed me over, but it's still a solid RE experience. Aside from that stuff (and Steve. Fuck that guy.), this game is really fun!   This episode was sponsored by Slick Rick, one of the longest running hot dogs in the pack, and I'm really pumped that he convinced me to give this game a shot. We had a chat about why Resident Evil: Code Veronica meant so much to him, and then my buddy Patrick and I explained everything we liked (and hated) about Claire's return to the spotlight.    And before we talk about Steve and his uselessness, it's another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, someone asked if I prefer playing retro games on their native hardware, or current consoles? We also talk about the new Mario Kart tracks, and what non-fiction video game books are worth a glance.   PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring three early 2000's Capcom classics: Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami.    Are you on social media? A landmark in the video game industry and ultimately, a massive disappointment Capcom and Nintendo fans alike. What started as a promise for 5 exclusive game to come to the GameCube (Dead Phoenix, Killer 7, PN03, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil 4) turned into a quick flip of these franchises to other consoles and ultimately the demise of these extremely original IPs other than RE4 of course. Two games concluded the run of Capcom's golden age of IP development with their semi-independent Clover Studio: God Hand and Okami.
