While this news broke after we recorded this week's episode, Gaslit Nation would like to congratulate the Colorado Supreme Court for being on the right side of history! With Trump disqualified from being on the ballot in Colorado, it's now up to the Supreme Court, which Trump packed, to take up the case. However things go, it's nice to finally see some justice for Trump's massive treason, though small at this very late stage. Terrell Starr of the essential Black Diplomats podcast is back on Gaslit Nation to discuss the latest polling revealing a generational split in the Democratic electorate when it comes to Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas War, especially the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, and Israel's widely documented unchecked war crimes. The discussion includes the path forward to resolve the conflict, lessons from Ukraine, and why the Far Left needs to be morally consistent when it comes to foreign policy and elevating the voices of regional experts. In this week's bonus show, out later this week for our supporters at the Truth-teller level and higher, Terrell and Andrea discuss Zelensky vs. Orban and why Ukraine finally entering the European Union matters for security in Europe and the U.S. Orban is the darling of the America First crowd, but as Zelensky and the adults in the room of the E.U. showed, he's just another scared “little man,” as the journalist Dorothy Thompson called the strongmen she covered, from Mussolini to Hitler to Stalin, during the 1930s. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - On Monday, Dec 12, Gorge Harbour Marina Resort announced that its seasonal liveaboard program will come to an end next Spring. Jason Johnson, General Manager of QXMC as well as the resort, wrote, “GHMR has never, to the best of my knowledge, offered year-round live aboard opportunities but has run a small seasonal program in previous years where under ten vessels were hosted. In 2022, the program has seven vessels, under short term live aboard contract ending the end of April 2023. In all cases, the stays were contingent on contracts being signed, liability insurance coverage for each vessel and one vessel per person. While these changes were difficult for guests, it allowed the 2022 program to continue.” The Harbour Authority of Cortes Island also manages a dock in the Gorge, so Cortes Currents asked Harbourmaster Jenny Hartwick if they accept liveaboards. “No, At this point in time, the Gorge dock is at capacity for commercial aquaculture vessels. We do have some dinghy use for boat-access-only individuals, and that would fall under recreational moorage, but we do not take long-term moorage requests for recreational vessels at the Gorge dock,” she replied. Hartwick explained that the Harbour Authority leases the Gorge dock from Small Craft Harbours. “The mandate of Small Craft Harbors is to support the commercial fishing industry. That includes the broader aquaculture, commercial vessels in general, as well as First Nation ceremonial and food fish uses. We are required by our lease agreement with Small Craft Harbours to meet that mandate. At the Gorge Dock in particular, that facility is at capacity with commercial users and we don't have room for any additional recreational moorage.” Cortes Currents asked, “Is there room at any of the other docks that the Harbour Authority manages?” “We do currently have some designated liveaboard positions at the docks. We have one liveaboard position at Manson's landing, one liveaboard space at Cortes Bay, and three designated liveaboard spaces at Squirrel Cove. All of those positions are currently filled with designated users. At this point in time, we have a wait list for liveaboard requests at the dock. If anyone is interested in obtaining liveaboard status at one of our facilities, they would need to reach out to the Harbor Authority and I'm happy to put them on the wait list, but we don't have any available spaces at this point in time.” Prior to the Marina releasing its announcement, one of the guests at their dock posted the following comment on Facebook: “I was very happy to be back on Cortes, having spent much of my childhood there. Guess it is not the Cortes I knew anymore. The disrespect toward those who chose to live on the water has been a shock, to say the least. I understand there are issues with some irresponsible boat owners, but I certainly am not one of them. Though I had moorage options elsewhere, I chose Gorge Harbour because of the connection I had to the island and its people. I have literally spent thousands of dollars in the community so far…” Johnson explained the resort's position: “With the full understanding that there is a housing crisis in BC and Cortes is certainly no different, we need to ensure that guests have access to the amenities needed for their short term stay as minimum expectations. The marina does not have pump out or sewer access. While the expectation is that vessels will leave and seek facilities accordingly, our marina is not equipped to offer this service. Water lines are not insulated and subject to freezing so we have a scheduled program whereby water is shut off daily and then restarted to avoid damage. This month we experienced a power outage whereby back up power was also affected and two live aboard gusts dependent on electric heat found themselves without heat. We mitigated this by hosting them up in other accommodation on site at our expense.”

Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

Our special series on the music of Jack White wraps up with a look at the 2022 two album releases, Fear of the Dawn and Entering Heaven Alive. Fear of the Dawn is much closer of a follow up to the experimentation we loved on Boarding House Reach. Entering Heaven Alive takes a more mellow approach, with acoustic aesthetic and jazz influence.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. There was a season in my life when I wanted to be the next John Mayer. When I was in college, I wrote my first song which then turned into me writing more songs and recording some of them.  I then moved to Nashville as an eager and optimistic 21 year old with a big dream of becoming a full-time musician. I went to Belmont University for my junior year of college and started meeting other singer/songwriters with similar dreams to mine. One of the people I met there was Steve Moakler. And when I first heard his music, I've got to be honest … I didn't want to like it because I was jealous. The guy was writing songs that were surely going to land him on the radio and everything about him just screamed “this guy is going to be a star.” People at Belmont talked about Steve like he was going to be the next John Mayer. Which was impossible! Because I was going to be the next John Mayer! But everything changed when I really got to know him.  We went on a tour together and quickly, Steve became one of my closest friends. If you don't know Steve Moakler, you're about to hear what makes him so special. In this episode, we look at the the follow up to Dead Weather's first album, sophomore drop Sea of Cowards. This album is more or less of the same ilk to the former album, showing iterations of what works and even what doesn't about the group. Nonetheless, this band was known for incredible live shows and electric energy. The next album we look at is the solo debut of Jack White. Just before 2011's Blunderbuss was released, the White Stripes announced they would not be coming back. This meant that Jack White was no longer tied to band with self-imposed limitations -- he was the conductor, and fully able to expand his ideas. It would become clear that there is a difference between a song written as Jack White for the White Stripes, and the songs Jack would write in the studio with studio musicians. Jack would be criticized for leaving his Little Room, but this moment was earned time and time again, and the album has some of Jack's best moments.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. For the third episode, we are looking at Jack White's first major side project, the Raconteurs. While Jack wouldn't embrace the label of side project or super group, the Raconteurs were a departure from what people knew of Jack White. With fellow singer/songwriter Brendan Benson, and the bass and drummer from The Greenhorns, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler respectively, The Raconteurs created a  rounded, refreshing project over the course of many years culminating in a 10 track album. After a year of touring, Jack would return to the White Stripes for another album -- what would be the last album. 2007's Icky Thump is both a return to the fundamentals of the White Stripes and a departure into the strange, all at once.  Jack and Meg had really turned over every stone in their little room to great effect.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. This episode covers both Jack White projects outside of the White Stripes, The Raconteurs and Dead Weather respectively. The Raconteurs follow-up album, Consolers of the Lonely (2008), was made after the band had toured together and developed their chemistry and as band. This album takes risks, rushing to the finish line for both better and worse.Next would be the debut of Led Zepplin-esque revival band, centered around sex and death, The Dead Weather. Another super group of sorts, Allison Mosshart of the Kills is on vocals, with Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs/Greenhorns on bass, and Jack White on drums. Jack was originally a drummer, and his chops are insane -- but this was a wild card, totally unexpected. And yet, it works so, so well. --Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. This next episode captures the peak of White Stripes fame and adoration, with the albums Elephant (2003) and Get Behind Me Satan (2005). Elephant was often accused of saving rock and roll, with flying guitar solos, incredible production, and top notch song writing -- the ubiquity of Seven Nation Army is undeniable. Two years later, the much anticipated Get Behind Me Satan released. It started with a fake out in the form of Blue Orchid, a power rocker near Seven Nation Army heights. But the rest of the album featured acoustic guitars, Steinway piano, marimba, mandolin, and folksy sincerity. It was a tortured process for the White Stripes, but there's a lot to mine here.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. http://polaroid41.com/space/ Wednesday, May 5th, 2021 - 4:11pm. On their 2001 album “White Blood Cells,” The White Stripes have a tiny gem of a song called “Little Room.” Little Room, lasting just 50 seconds, is a brief and lovely ode to the creative process, and more importantly to the role of space in the creative process. Now, I don't know if you are reading this or listening to this, but for those of you who are listening, here comes a treat...I am going to sing you the White Stripes song. Here goes: Well, you're in your little room And you're working on something good But if it's really good You're gonna need a bigger room And when you're in the bigger room You might not know what to do You might have to think of how you got started Sitting in your little room I am currently making my first big solo show. After a year of creating portfolios, drafting notes of intention, filing funding applications, soliciting potential partners and residency spaces, I have finally arrived at the beginning of the creative process. Last week and this week I had my first days working with my director in two different theatres. Earlier in April I also had three days alone in a theatre space. This wasn't the initial plan but due to ever-evolving covid restrictions, schools opening and closing, etc, I ended up being available while my director was not. I hesitated...I have never had three days of creation time alone in a theatre before...but then I thought: Wait a minute, after a year of living on top of each other, someone is offering me an entire theatre to myself. I have to do this! So, I gathered up my books and notebooks, my crayons, paper and scissors, I packed myself a lunch and off I went. The technician greeted me, showed me around the space, turned the lights and sound on and then left me to it. The first thing I did was take off my socks and shoes, walk to the middle of the stage and blast ‘Little Room' from all 8 speakers while I sang and danced my heart out. You see, I've been carrying the idea for this show in my head and heart for a very long time, and now it's time for a ‘bigger room.' It's the Jack White method for the creative process: start simple, if you've got something good, recognize it and dare to take up some space, know that this step might be intimidating and if it is, come back to the roots and remember where you started from. ...
