Coming out can be both thrilling and exhilarating… but also kind of dangerous. There's something about that first rush of freedom that makes you feel invincible—like you can throw yourself into any and every experience, consequences be damned.Which brings us to this week's guest—Brad Shreve. Now, you might already know Brad as an author and the host of multiple podcasts, including Going Hollywood, Queer We Are, and Queer Writers of Crime. He finally came out to himself in his 30s, when he was working in the travel industry, newly single, that he dove headfirst into queer life—taking in everything, the good and the bad. And, it was at Faultline, a bar in Los Angeles , where he first felt seen.Content warning: this episode touches on drug use, suicidal thoughts, and domestic violence. If you're not in the right headspace to listen, please take care of yourself and come back when you're ready.Follow meInstagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespodFacebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespodTikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespodSign up to the Queer Word newsletter: https://queer-word.beehiiv.com/subscribeSupport meBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespodFollow my guestInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebradshreve/
Tony Maietta and Brad Shreve are the co-hosts on the podcast Going Hollywood, where they talk about their favorite films. And on this week's Sewers of Paris, we've got a double feature — first an interview with Tony and then an interview with Brad. Tony's an actor-turned-writer whose books include The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens, which he wrote after a chance encounter with The Marble Faun himself. And Brad's a writer of queer mystery novels, though he went through a pretty rough time before his writing career took shape — spiraling through drug use, homelessness, and a period where the only way he could communicate with his then-boyfriend, now-husband was through the video game Second Life. We'll have those two conversations in just a moment. First, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. TW: Transphobia. Today I share a recent experience in which I failed as a Trans Ally. I often talk about how important Queer Community is, but it's also important that we ensure we show up in Queer Safe Space's in a way that is truly supportive of everyone. Taking the time to talk about our failures, and examine why they happen, and how to best move forward as a better version of ourselves is important for all folks, but it's extra important for anyone that deems themselves an ally, or wants to be an ally. We're also going to look at Adrienne Rich, the writer of Compulsory Heterosexuality, as I have recently found out she, as a Queer feminist, harmed the Trans Community in a pretty significant way. While this episode might not feel inherently related to the Late Blooming Community, many of us are new to Queer spaces, and how we show up matters. My guest, Brad Shreve, has had a lot of challenges in life starting with internalized homophobia, a broken marriage after coming out, sexual addiction, alcohol, drugs, domestic abuse, homelessness, time in a psych ward, and a long struggle after recovery. Just as it seemed life was coming together, he spiraled out of control to where he could barely function, only to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He claims it was one of the best days of his life because things finally made sense.Brad's BooksQueer Writers of Crime podcastBrad's ProfileBe a GuestFollow Us on FacebookPower Moments With MaddoxAll Maddox's Links

If so, deciphering that message could lead Mitch to solving the crime.“Brad Shreve serves up a Chandler-esque Los Angeles full of show biz types and perverts, mansions and bad neighborhoods. At the center of it all is Mitch O'Reilly a deeply troubled detective with an attitude who can't find his way to the quiet life he craves.” - Marshall Thornton, three time Lambda Award winner and author of the Boystown, and Pinx Video series.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Brad Shreve is the author of the Mitch O'Reilly Mystery series. When younger he focused on visual arts. Inspired by Gary Trudeau's Doonesbury, he developed a comic strip certain a syndicate would distribute it globally. In the process he found he enjoyed writing over sketching and changed his goal. Authors such as Lawrence Block, and Gregory McDonald fueled his passion for mysteries, but it took his discovery of LGBTQ crime fiction to nudge him to go beyond dabbling the keys. To introduce others to the subgenre he created and hosts the Queer Writers of Crime podcast.Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/bradshreve01/Twitter https://twitter.com/BradShreveInstagram https://www.instagram.com/bradshreveauthor/Website https://bradshreve.com/Queer Writers of Crime Podcast: https://www.queerwritersofcrime.com/****************Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers. Having lost himself in the corporate world, Brad Shreve discovered the big office and prestigious title were great for the ego but were not great for living a life he found fulfilling. As a grownup he pondered what he wanted to do when he became a bigger grownup, and the answer was obvious. His fingertips have been on the keyboard ever since. Brad was thrilled when he discovered LGBTQ mysteries are a thing, and the list of authors who inspired him to write in the subgenre are too numerous to mention. In 2019, he published A Body in a Bathhouse, his first novel in the Mitch O'Reilly mystery series. He is also the host of Queer Writers of Crime, a weekly podcast featuring interviews with LGBTQ authors of mystery, suspense, and thriller fiction.
