A podcast for celebration, commiseration, and support through grad school for the students who are living it (or want to). Join Elana Gloger, a full-time 4th year doctoral student and part-time human, as she chats with fellow grad students about their professional and personal experiences, without taking either too seriously. Episodes include conversations about students' Day in the Life, conversations about Diverse Identities and Racism in Academia, and themed episodes (like, Mental Health in Grad School or Resources for Efficiency). As grad students, we all love what we do, struggle with what we do, need support through what we do, and should be celebrated for what we do and 'Dear Grad Student' is the place for it all.
On today's episode of Dear Grad Student, Elana chats with 3rd year PhD Student, Moronke Harris, about how to let out the creativity that drives science in different forms. From her deep-sea research on hydrothermal vents to her painting, Moronke shares why she believes blending passions is so important to the process of creating actionable change with her work. Learn all about deep ocean farts, the imaginative scientist, and begin your quest to find the lost archives Elana's music videos on Youtube.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Without our Patrons and supporters, this podcast would not be possible: PatreonBuy me a CoffeePODCAST SWAG: https://www.deargradstudent.com/merch https://deargradstudent.comTikTok: @deargradstudent Twitter: @DearGradStudentInstagram: @DearGradStudentPodElana on Twitter: @elana_glogerConnect with Monoke:WebsiteTwitterLinktreeEpisode Resources:Dan Coe Carto Lidar Data Art TutorialOcean Networks CanadasubROV Video GameRadio AmnionMusic provided by: Open Those Bright Eyes by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4171-open-those-bright-eyesLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ [Episode edited by Coral Arroyo]Episode made possible by Dear Grad Student Team members Aubrey Tingler & William OtaSupport the show
In today's episode of Dear Grad Student, Elana chats with Dr. Apryl Alexander to discuss progress made (or not) since the 2020 'Summer of Racial Reckoning' following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others by police. What does it look like to reflect on our privilege, speak about that privilege to uplift others, and bring the safety and well-being of minoritized groups to the forefront of practice? Institutions have shown where and how they “care” about the well-being of marginalized students, staff, and faculty. In this ~special~ episode of Dear Grad Student, Elana speaks with her DGS team members, Aubrey Tingler and William Ota, about the University of California strike, the conditions which drive grad students to strike, & their views on the topic. If you're a grad student, you've probably been told you're a student when it comes to pay and benefits, & an employee when you try to access student services. This means graduate students are vulnerable to exploitation by universities. On top of the emotional and financial costs of pursuing graduate education, working conditions have not kept up with inflation, rising class sizes, or cost of living, which makes it hard to survive for anyone, let alone the many marginalized groups in academia. In California, this resulted in three unions represented graduate student educators (TAs), graduate student researchers (GSRs), and post-docs in the University of California system to go on strike. Listen for the DGS team talk to learn more.SUPPORT THE SHOW:- Patreon- Buy me a CoffeeWithout our Patrons & supporters, this podcast would not be possiblePODCAST SWAG: https://www.redbubble.com/people/deargradstudent/shophttps://deargradstudent.comTikTok: @deargradstudent Twitter: @DearGradStudentInstagram: @DearGradStudentPodElana on Twitter: @elana_glogerConnect with the Team:- Aubrey Tingler- William OtaSpeaker Resources:- https://www.fairucnow.org/- https://open.spotify.com/episode/4TJQlgzAcwbMpRUfArUjNx?si=3c2d6e79d70d46dd Music provided by: Open Those Bright Eyes by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4171-open-those-bright-eyes License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ [Episode edited by Coral Arroyo; Team Credit and Episode Made Possible by Aubrey Tingler and William Ota]Support the show
