A Wisconsin beef producer has been named secretary/treasurer of the Cattlemen's Beef Board. Terry Quam from Marda Angus in Lodi was named to the position in January. Bob Bosold visits with Quam about the direction of the industry, challenges identified by CBB, and how they're working to invest checkoff dollars wisely to get answers. Today will be fine weatherwise, but Wednesday gets interesting. Stu Muck is reminding rainfall reporters that they're "on deck" for precipitation updates starting tonight. Mud is one reason why people with livestock might still be keeping animals indoors. Diet is another. Stephanie Hoff finds out about some of the items all animal owners, especially horse owners, need to think through before they open the pasture gate from equine veterinarian, Dr. Howard Ketover. Dan Halstrom, President and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation, says that China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) has not recertified U.S. pork and beef processors for shipment into China. That's a big deal - just as big he says - as tariffs. Market eyes are focused on the wheat market according to John Heinberg, from Total Farm Marketing in West Bend. Dry weather's threatening the crops in the central plains. Plus a beef plant in South Dakota closed yesterday because of poor margins. In recent weeks eggs have been top of mind for the food industry as well as consumers. What many may not think of is how it affects restaurants. Susan Quam the Executive Vice President of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association explains how low supply and high prices are causing restaurants to raise their own prices. She explains that in some cases restaurants are putting specials on other food items to try to steer customers away from eggs. Bakeries are also in a difficult spot as most of their products require eggs to be used. Beef prices have also seen a hike in recent times causing an increase in many menu items. Looking at recent advancements in deportation by the Trump administration has also caused issues with labor whether it be in the restaurant or suppliers. In our sixth and final episode of the Fire in the Southwest Series—sponsored by the Southwest Fire Science Consortium and the Arizona Wildfire Initiative—we explore the complex, multicultural fire histories and management dynamics in New Mexico, with State Forester and Tribal Liaison Lindsey Quam.New Mexico's recent relationship with fire has been fraught with distrust in the aftermath of the 2022 Calf Canyon Hermits Peak Fire, which started from an escaped prescribed fire and an escaped pile burn. Lindsey's career has been bookended by such events, having started his career in Los Alamos, NM in the aftermath of the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire, which also started as an escaped prescribed fire. This has allowed him to witness first hand how public trust has ebbed and flowed around the use of prescribed fire. It's also presented opportunities for him to help shape and better understand the many mixed emotions New Mexicans have around this topic.Lindsey spoke to how the intersecting cultures and management values across New Mexico—including Indigenous peoples, the Hispanic population and, well, white people—presents challenges but also opportunities in trying to extoll the merits of prescribed fire."There's no dispute amongst native New Mexicans who live off the land—there is a recognition that fire is important and necessary, but there's also a fear," Lindsey, who is himself a member of the Zuni Pueblo, said.Lindsey also shared how his agency is scaling up forest treatments through collaboration, and establishing priority landscapes to implement landscape-scale resilience projects.If you'd like to learn more about acequias, which are mentioned in this episode, I can't recommend Patrick Lohmann's reporting enough. He capped off his junior career in 2003 as he hung up his green coat for the last time. Today he and his wife, Melody, have three children who compete at the National Junior Angus Show every summer and are capable hired hands during school breaks and weekends.  Cody Quam, Marda Angus Farms, Lodi, Wis., is a fourth-generation Angus breeder working side-by-side with his family. Cody leads genetic selection and the donor/embryo transfer program as well as sales and marketing. Under his stewardship, the business has earned multiple top honors at the Midland Bull Test. Off the farm, the young breeder stays involved in the cattle industry, as a long-time delegate to the national convention, a graduate of the Beef Leaders Institute and president of the World Beef Expo board. Cody and his wife, Tracy, are raising their two kids, Levi and Paisley, as the fifth generation in the Angus business.
